If your Garmin solar watch shows little or no battery gain in sunlight, first check its solar-intensity indicator or Garmin Connect graph in unobstructed direct sun. A low reading can result from shade, a covered or dirty lens, weather, temperature, a full battery, or power use that exceeds solar input. Solar charging is supplemental: Garmin says it is meant to extend time between normal charges, not replace charging by cable.
1. Confirm that the watch supports solar charging and is not already full
Solar features apply only to solar-capable editions; not every Garmin watch can charge from sunlight. Check the exact model and edition in its manual before troubleshooting solar input.

A full battery can stop solar intake, so no apparent increase does not necessarily indicate a fault. Garmin gives model-specific examples: an Instinct Solar may show a checkmark when full on software version 10.00 or later, while an Instinct 2 Solar may show a slash through the intensity symbol when full or solar charging is disabled on software version 14.12 or later. Those icon behaviors and version details should not be generalized to other models.
2. Check whether the lens is receiving sunlight
Use the watch indicator or solar graph
Open the watch’s solar glance/widget or a compatible watch face and look for the intensity indicator or recent graph. You can also check Garmin Connect: More → Garmin Devices → select your device → Solar Intensity. App labels and menu locations can change between versions.

Garmin says a 100% solar-intensity reading in full direct sunlight corresponds to approximately 50,000 lux or more. That describes a light condition, not a promised rate of battery gain. A weak or absent reading is a reason to check exposure and conditions before assuming the watch is defective.
Improve exposure without overheating the watch
- Face the lens toward direct sun and wear the watch on the outside of your wrist.
- Keep the lens clean and uncovered; sleeves, shade, and other objects can block light.
- Consider whether clouds, rain, time of day, season, latitude, or the sun’s angle are reducing sunlight. Glass and water can also reduce or scatter light.
- If a screen protector is installed, note that Garmin does not recommend protectors for solar watches because they reduce the intensity reaching the lens.
Do not put the watch in unsafe heat to try to increase charging. Garmin’s solar best-practice page lists 0–60°C (32–140°F) as a charging threshold for the models covered by that page; the relevant temperature range can differ by model, so use your watch’s own manual.

3. Consider battery use as well as solar input
Solar charging may be working even when the displayed battery level is falling: the watch can use power faster than sunlight replaces it. Garmin’s Instinct troubleshooting guidance identifies recorded activities, paired Bluetooth sensors, and active use of screens or menus as possible contributors. Treat those as model-specific examples, not a complete list for every Garmin watch.

Use the intensity reading, battery state, lens exposure, and your model’s temperature specification together. A full battery can explain why no gain is visible; low intensity points toward exposure or conditions; a falling level during power-intensive use may reflect consumption outpacing solar input.

4. Test normal cable charging if the battery keeps declining
Garmin describes solar as supplemental, not a primary charging source. If cable charging also appears to fail, follow the procedure for your exact model:
- Connect the correct charging cable for the watch’s model.
- Clean the contacts on both the watch and cable with rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab.
- Check for available software updates and install them as directed for that model.
- Restart the watch using the instructions in its owner’s manual.
- Leave it connected to power for several hours, even if the display does not show charging, before judging whether the battery is functioning.
If it still will not accept a cable charge or continues to show a fault after these steps, contact Garmin support or service for model-specific diagnosis. Garmin says watch batteries are not user-replaceable, so do not treat battery replacement as a normal user repair.

Use the exact model’s guidance for model-specific details
The available direct solar troubleshooting article addresses Instinct Solar watches. Its icon behavior and advice should not be assumed to apply to other Garmin models. Check the exact manual for solar availability, temperature limits, indicator meanings, restart steps, and update instructions.
