If a fitness app suddenly stops sending reminders, work through the problem in layers: first confirm the reminder still exists and is enabled in the app, then check the app’s notification permission and notification categories on your phone. On Android, also remove background-data and battery restrictions that can delay background work. Finally, update and restart the app and phone. If reminders still fail, give the app’s support team the app version, device, operating-system version, reminder schedule and the checks you completed.
The exact menus differ by app, phone maker and operating-system release. The sequence below is designed to isolate each layer without assuming that one setting fixes every fitness app.

Start by identifying what stopped
Before changing settings, determine whether every reminder is missing or only one type. A scheduled workout prompt, a daily activity-goal alert, a workout check-in, and a reminder to stop a workout may be controlled separately. Note the reminder’s expected time, days, trigger and notification sound or banner. Also check whether other apps can currently deliver notifications. This distinction tells you whether to investigate one reminder rule, the fitness app, or phone-wide delivery.
- Only one reminder is missing: treat it as an in-app schedule or trigger problem first.
- All reminders from that app are missing: check the app’s permission, notification categories and background operation.
- Many apps are silent: inspect Focus or Do Not Disturb, scheduled quiet periods, notification summaries and device-wide notification settings.
- Reminders arrive late: prioritize background-data, battery-use and network checks, especially on Android.
No app name, phone model or operating-system version was specified here, so an exact diagnosis is not possible until you collect those details. Use the following steps in order and test after each meaningful change.
1. Re-create the reminder inside the fitness app
Open the fitness app and look for a section named Reminders, Notifications, Goals, Training plan, Workouts, Schedule, or Settings. Names vary, but the controls usually live near the feature that created the reminder.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- Open the reminder, goal or training-plan settings.
- Confirm the reminder switch is on. A phone can permit notifications while an individual reminder remains disabled.
- Check the time zone, time of day, selected weekdays and start or end date. A changed travel time zone, daylight-saving adjustment or expired plan can make a valid reminder appear to have disappeared.
- Confirm the trigger still applies. For example, a reminder based on an incomplete goal may not fire after the goal, workout or plan has been completed.
- Check the selected delivery type, such as push notification, sound, vibration or wearable alert. A reminder may be generated but appear silent if its category was changed.
- Save the setting, then create a temporary test reminder a few minutes in the future if the app allows it. Delete the test after delivery or after you finish troubleshooting.
If the reminder is absent from the app’s own list, phone settings cannot restore it. Re-create it or repair the schedule in the app first. If it is present and enabled, continue to the phone’s permission layer.
2. Check notification permission at both levels
There are two independent controls: the operating system must allow the app to notify you, and the app may have separate categories for workouts, goals, coaching or reminders. Enabling only one layer is not enough.

- Open Settings > Notifications, select the fitness app, and confirm Allow Notifications is enabled. Review whether Lock Screen, Notification Center, Banners, Sounds and Badges are enabled as needed.
- Check whether the app’s reminder category is muted or delivered silently. iOS can leave permission on while changing how a notification appears.
- Open the fitness app and inspect its own notification or reminder settings again. A category disabled in the app will not be restored by iOS permission.
For Apple Fitness specifically, Apple documents the in-app path as Fitness > Summary > profile picture or initials > Notifications. Apple also provides a distinct workout check-in control at Fitness > Summary > profile picture or initials > Workout > Check In Reminders. Apple describes these as tools to help you reach daily activity goals and to manage workout check-ins. A different iPhone fitness app will use its own controls, so do not assume the Apple Fitness path exists in another app.

Android: system permission and notification categories
- Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications (the wording may differ), select the fitness app and allow notifications.
- Open the app’s notification categories or channels. Turn on the category used for reminders and choose an audible or visible alert if that is what you expect.
- Check the app’s in-app notification page. Some apps have independent switches for goals, workouts, inactivity, coaching and plan events.
Android manufacturers rename menus and add their own notification managers. If you cannot find a setting, use the Settings search field for the app name, “notifications,” “battery,” and “background data.”
3. Remove Android background restrictions
Android may allow notifications while restricting the background work that creates or schedules them. Google’s guidance for the Google Health app says that preventing background operation can cause delayed or missing notifications. Its checks include allowing background and unrestricted mobile data and allowing background app use or unrestricted battery use. These instructions apply directly to Google Health behavior; they are a diagnostic model for other Android fitness apps, not proof that every app uses identical menus.
Allow background data
- Open Settings > Apps > [fitness app] > Mobile data or a similarly named data-usage page.
- Turn on Background data. If your phone offers Unrestricted data usage or a data-saver exception, enable it for the app when reminders must work during Data Saver.
- Check whether a system-wide Data Saver mode is active. If it is, either disable it for testing or add the fitness app as an allowed app.
Allow background battery use
- Open Settings > Apps > [fitness app] > Battery or App battery usage.
- Choose an option that permits background activity, such as Optimized or Unrestricted, according to the app’s guidance. For troubleshooting, temporarily selecting unrestricted use can show whether aggressive battery management is the cause; it may increase battery consumption.
- Look for manufacturer features named Sleeping apps, Deep sleeping apps, Auto-start, Background limits or App freezer. Remove the fitness app from those lists or allow it to start automatically.
Google explicitly notes that Android steps vary by device. Do not treat a menu label from one phone maker as universal. After changing a restriction, open the app once, leave the phone connected to the internet and test a new reminder.

4. Check phone-wide silencing and delivery behavior
A notification can be permitted but intentionally hidden or delayed by a phone-wide mode. These are possibilities to check, not established causes for every app or device.
- Focus or Do Not Disturb: review active schedules and allowed apps. Add the fitness app if you want reminders during a focus period.
- Scheduled quiet hours: check sleep, work or driving schedules that may overlap the reminder time.
- Notification summary or bundling: on devices that group notifications for later delivery, remove the fitness app from the scheduled summary or set immediate delivery.
- Muted category: open the app’s notification category and ensure it is not set to silent or minimized.
- Lock-screen privacy: if alerts appear only after unlocking, review lock-screen notification visibility. This changes what you see, not necessarily whether the app generated the alert.
- Connectivity: verify that the phone can reach the internet when the app needs to synchronize a schedule. A local alarm may work offline, while a server-triggered reminder may not.
Run a simple comparison test: trigger a notification from another app, then use a short test reminder in the fitness app. If other apps also fail, focus on phone-wide delivery. If only the fitness app fails, return to its permission, category and background settings.
5. Update, reopen and restart
Version mismatches can appear after an operating-system update, an app migration or a server-side change. Update the fitness app from the official app store and install a supported phone operating-system update. Then fully close and reopen the app and restart the phone. Open the app after the restart so it can sign in, refresh its schedule and request any changed permissions.

Compatibility requirements are vendor-specific and change over time. For example, a current Strava help page lists Strava version 466 or later, iOS 17 or later and Android 8 or later. Those figures apply to Strava, not to fitness apps generally; another app may support different versions. If an app’s support page lists a minimum version, compare it with the installed app and operating system before troubleshooting further.

If the app store says the app or operating system is no longer supported, record that message for support. Do not infer a universal minimum version from another vendor’s requirement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Use a controlled reminder test
A controlled test prevents you from waiting through an entire day without knowing which change mattered.
Best Value
- Choose a reminder type that can be scheduled soon, such as a one-time workout or goal alert.
- Set it for five to ten minutes ahead while the phone has a reliable connection.
- Keep the app’s reminder switch on, leave the app open for a minute, then lock the phone.
- Observe whether the alert appears as a banner, in Notification Center, on the lock screen, with sound or only after opening the app.
- If it fails, note the exact time and whether the app shows the reminder as completed, missed or still pending.
- After each change—permission, notification category, background data or battery setting—run one new test rather than changing several unrelated settings at once.
A successful test shows that delivery works under those conditions; it does not prove that every reminder type is configured correctly. Test the original schedule after the short test succeeds.
7. Compare the iPhone and Android checks
| What you need to inspect | iPhone or Apple Fitness | Android or Google Health example |
|---|---|---|
| In-app reminder | Open the fitness app’s reminder, goal or workout settings. Apple Fitness exposes notification controls in Fitness > Summary > profile picture or initials > Notifications. | Open the app’s reminder, goal or workout settings; labels differ by app. |
| App permission | Settings > Notifications > the fitness app; allow notifications and the desired presentation types. | Settings > Notifications > App notifications > the fitness app; enable the relevant categories. |
| Special workout reminder | Apple Fitness places Check In Reminders under Fitness > Summary > profile picture or initials > Workout. | Use the app’s own workout or goal category; there is no universal Android path. |
| Background operation | Review the app’s background or connectivity guidance if it provides one. | Check background data, Data Saver exceptions and battery-use restrictions. Google documents these checks for Google Health and warns that restrictions can delay or prevent notifications. |
| Menu variability | iOS labels can change between releases and app versions. | Phone manufacturers use different labels and locations for data and battery controls. |
Common symptoms and the next check
| Symptom | Most useful next check | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| The reminder is not listed in the app. | Re-create or re-enable the reminder and verify its date, time and trigger. | The problem is in the app’s schedule, not the phone’s notification permission. |
| The app shows the reminder as due, but no alert appears. | Check operating-system permission and the app’s notification category. | The reminder may be generated but blocked, muted or delivered silently. |
| Alerts appear only when the app is opened. | On Android, inspect background data and battery restrictions; on either platform, check connectivity and background guidance. | The app may not be allowed to perform the work needed while closed. |
| Alerts arrive hours late. | Check battery optimization, Data Saver, scheduled summaries and network access. | Delayed background execution or delayed presentation is more likely than a missing schedule. |
| Every app’s notifications are missing. | Inspect Focus, Do Not Disturb, quiet hours, notification summary and device-wide settings. | The fault is probably broader than the fitness app. |
| The issue began after an update. | Check the app’s current support page, installed version and operating-system compatibility. | A changed requirement or app regression may need vendor-specific help. |
When to contact support
Contact the fitness app’s official support when the reminder is enabled, permissions are correct, background restrictions are cleared where relevant, and a controlled test still fails. An app-specific defect cannot be diagnosed from generic phone settings alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInclude these details in the first message:
- App name and exact installed version.
- Phone model and operating-system version.
- Reminder type, scheduled time, days and time zone.
- Whether the reminder appears inside the app as pending, due or completed.
- Whether other apps can deliver notifications.
- Whether the fitness app works only when open or also in the background.
- The permission, notification-category, background-data and battery settings you checked.
- The date and time of a failed controlled test, plus any error text or screenshots that do not expose private health information.
Check the vendor’s current support or service-status page before sending the report. Requirements and menu labels change, and support can tell you whether a known outage or compatibility issue affects your app version.
Actions that can make diagnosis harder
- Changing many settings at once: you will not know which change affected delivery. Use one controlled test after each major change.
- Assuming a phone notification permission is sufficient: the app’s own reminder switch and categories can still be off.
- Copying another app’s minimum version: compatibility figures are vendor-specific. The Strava figures above are an example, not a standard for all fitness apps.
- Immediately reinstalling or resetting: the available product guidance does not establish either action as a universal fix. Reinstallation can also remove local settings or unsynchronized data. Preserve the schedule and support details first, and follow the app maker’s instructions if it specifically recommends a reset.
- Buying a new phone, wearable or accessory: a purchase is not an evidence-based remedy for a reminder setting, permission or background restriction problem.
What a successful fix looks like
You should be able to see the reminder enabled in the app, see the app permitted to notify in the phone’s settings, and receive a short test alert while the app is not on screen. On Android, the app should also be allowed the background data and battery use needed by its design. Then confirm the original daily or workout schedule on its next normal trigger. If only one reminder type remains absent, investigate that feature’s in-app trigger rather than repeating phone-wide changes.
