Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The safest way to prepare an indie game for launch is to freeze one named release candidate, record every issue against that build, and prioritize by player risk rather than by bug count. Close crashes, data loss, progression dead ends, broken input, save failures, required-content gaps, payment or entitlement errors, and platform-validation failures first. Then address high-impact problems in the first hour and core loop, followed by performance, accessibility, polish, and optional content. Keep a known-good build available, retest every accepted fix on the same candidate, and do not replace it with an untested last-minute change.
What “launch ready” actually means
A game does not become safe to ship merely because the issue tracker has few open tickets. A small number of crashes on a critical path can be more dangerous than dozens of harmless visual defects. Conversely, a long list of cosmetic issues may not justify destabilizing a candidate that already passes the required checks.

Use evidence from one identifiable release candidate to answer four questions:
- Can players start, control, save, load, progress through, and finish the intended experience?
- Can the game recover from ordinary interruptions such as quitting, losing focus, disconnecting, or changing a setting?
- Does the build satisfy the platform, storefront, entitlement, accessibility, and content requirements that apply to its release?
- Are the remaining issues understood well enough to document a workaround or schedule a safe post-launch patch?
There is no authoritative universal number of bugs that an indie game may leave open. The release decision depends on the severity, reach, reproducibility, workaround, fix risk, and validation status of each remaining issue.

Freeze and name the release candidate
Triage becomes unreliable when reports refer to “the latest build” and developers test different files. Select one candidate and identify it with a version number, changelist, commit hash, or equivalent immutable label. Put that identifier in the build title, issue tracker, test notes, and release checklist.
What to record with the candidate
- Build identifier and date.
- Target platforms and supported operating-system versions.
- Enabled content, downloadable packages, languages, and configuration flags.
- Known-good save files or test profiles used for regression.
- Artifact location and the person responsible for preserving it.
When a candidate is replaced, close the old test pass explicitly and open a new one. Do not silently mix results from two builds. A launch checklist is a set of passes for one named candidate, not a wish list spanning every build produced during development.
Preserve a known-good fallback
Keep the last candidate that passed smoke, regression, and required platform checks in a location the whole team can access. If a late fix causes a new crash or save problem, you need to compare against a stable baseline and, if necessary, return to it while the change is investigated.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Microsoft’s GDC 2025 launch guidance makes the same risk explicit: “While it may be tempting, rushing out an untested build to fix a minor texture issue or localization bug is a sure fire way to introduce nasty bugs on launch day.” A cosmetic fix is not automatically worth changing a validated release.
Capture reproducible evidence for every report
A title such as “menu broken” is not triage data. Before assigning a priority, turn the observation into a report another person can reproduce on the named candidate.
Minimum bug-report fields
| Field | What to capture | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Build and session | Candidate identifier, date, tester, session or run ID | Prevents results from different builds being combined |
| Platform and configuration | Device or hardware class, operating system, controller or keyboard, graphics settings, display mode, language, and network state when relevant | Shows whether reach is universal, platform-specific, or configuration-specific |
| Save state | Save slot, checkpoint, inventory, quest state, or other conditions needed to reproduce | Distinguishes a general failure from a state-dependent edge case |
| Steps | Numbered actions from a clean starting point to the failure | Lets a developer reproduce the same path and verify a fix |
| Expected and actual result | What should happen and what happens instead | Defines the observable behavior that must be retested |
| Frequency | Every attempt, intermittent, or one observed occurrence; include sample size when known | Separates deterministic blockers from reports that need investigation |
| Impact | Crash, data loss, progression failure, severe degradation, confusion, or cosmetic defect | Supplies the severity assessment |
| Evidence | Video, screenshots, logs, crash dumps, save files, or reproduction notes | Reduces uncertainty and shortens diagnosis |
| Retest link | The fix, commit, candidate, tester, date, and result | Shows whether “fixed” means verified rather than merely changed |
Record raw playtest feedback before interpreting it. A player’s wording may reveal a discoverability or onboarding problem even when the underlying software behaves as designed. Preserve the original observation alongside the technical diagnosis.
Separate severity from priority
Severity describes how badly the defect harms the player, the save, the system, or the release. Priority describes when the team should act. They are related but not interchangeable fields.

| Severity signal | Typical example | Initial priority tendency |
|---|---|---|
| Blocker | Launch crash, hang, save corruption, data loss, broken controls, progression dead end, soft lock, missing required content, failed entitlement or payment, or certification failure | Immediate; must be fixed or have an explicitly accepted mitigation before shipping |
| High | Core loop fails or becomes severely degraded; first-hour onboarding prevents many players from understanding or continuing | Fix before lower-impact polish unless the change is demonstrably unsafe |
| Medium | Important feature is unreliable but a safe workaround preserves progress | Schedule according to reach, frequency, workaround quality, and remaining time |
| Low | Cosmetic defect, minor text issue, or optional-content annoyance with no meaningful loss of progress | Fix when low risk; otherwise document for a later patch |
Priority should also account for reach, frequency, critical-path position, discoverability, workaround quality, fix risk, regression surface, dependencies, and time remaining. A lower-severity issue can outrank a severe but exceptionally rare edge case if it affects every new player, a storefront requirement, or a heavily marketed feature. A severe issue can be scheduled behind a release-blocking crash when its fix touches a fragile subsystem and the crash has a safe, verified mitigation.
A practical priority discussion
- Impact: Does the issue crash, erase progress, stop advancement, or merely look wrong?
- Reach: Does it affect every player, one platform, a hardware class, a language, or a rare state?
- Path: Is it encountered at launch, onboarding, the core loop, saving and loading, purchasing, or only in optional content?
- Evidence: Is it deterministic and reproduced by several testers, or is it an unconfirmed anecdote that still merits investigation?
- Workaround: Can a player continue without losing progress or misunderstanding the objective?
- Change risk: How large is the regression surface, and can the fix be isolated and retested quickly?
- Deadline: How much time remains for implementation, certification, regression, and a rollback?
Write the reasoning in the ticket. “P1” without an explanation does not tell the team why an issue moved ahead of another one.
Identify launch blockers first
Start each triage session by scanning for failures that can prevent a player from starting, continuing, keeping progress, or completing a required transaction.
Crashes, hangs, and unrecoverable states
Prioritize crashes on launch, during loading, when entering a common area, or while saving. Hangs that require a forced quit belong in the same group. A soft lock, infinite loading screen, or state from which no input can recover is a progression blocker even if the process has not technically crashed.
Recommended Free Tools
Save and load integrity
Test new saves, overwrites, autosaves, manual saves, loading after death or a checkpoint, and loading after changing versions or settings when those cases are supported. Data loss or corruption is launch-critical. A visual mismatch in a loaded state may be lower severity, but if it prevents a quest, level, or achievement from advancing, classify it by the resulting progression failure.
Input and accessibility essentials
Verify the first-run control path with the supported controller and keyboard or mouse combinations. Check rebinding, focus movement, confirmation and back actions, pause behavior, and recovery after disconnecting a controller. A player who cannot navigate a required screen or perform a mandatory action is blocked even when the rest of the game runs correctly.
Progression and required content
Follow the main path from a fresh profile through the intended ending. Include gates, tutorials, checkpoints, quest completion, inventory requirements, and transitions between scenes. Missing required assets, broken localization that hides a necessary instruction, or a quest that cannot be completed belongs above optional side-content defects.

Entitlement and platform validation
Test ownership checks, downloadable content access, purchases, cloud or platform sign-in requirements, achievements where required, and any platform-specific policy checks. Microsoft certification guidance says failures found during basic validation testing must be fixed before resubmission. Treat equivalent validation failures for the target platform as release blockers rather than ordinary bugs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSevere performance failures
Look for frame-time spikes, memory exhaustion, thermal or battery problems, long stalls, and input latency that make the core loop effectively unusable. A brief drop in an optional scene is different from sustained degradation during the first hour or on the minimum supported hardware.
Use bug bashes and focused playtests for different questions
A broad bug bash is useful for discovering unexpected failures. Microsoft describes it as a free way to have a group dive in and play the game. Breadth alone is not enough, however: targeted sessions are needed to prove that the critical paths work.
Run a broad bug bash
- Give testers the exact candidate identifier and a short instruction to record raw observations.
- Ask them to explore different routes, settings, devices, languages, and play styles rather than repeat one scripted path.
- Require each report to include session context, reproduction information, and evidence where possible.
- Deduplicate reports only after comparing platform, save state, and reproduction steps.
Run targeted passes
- Fresh install, first launch, first-run configuration, and onboarding.
- Main progression from a new profile through key gates and the intended ending.
- Save, load, autosave, manual save, death, checkpoint, and interrupted-session recovery.
- Controller, keyboard and mouse, rebinding, focus navigation, and disconnect or reconnect behavior.
- Graphics settings, display modes, resolution changes, audio devices, and performance on supported hardware.
- Accessibility options and any feature advertised as supported.
- Networking, sign-in, entitlement, downloadable content, and achievements where applicable.
- Localization, text overflow, subtitles, and required instructions.
Controlled playtest distribution can collect feedback through a platform’s test channel, community forum, chat server, bug tracker, or a dedicated website. The channel matters less than preserving the candidate ID and the reproduction context for every report.
A step-by-step triage workflow
1. Lock the candidate
Publish the build identifier, supported configurations, and test window. Reject reports that do not identify the tested build until the reporter supplies that context.
2. Capture and reproduce
Have a second person follow the steps on the same candidate. If the issue cannot be reproduced, keep it open as unconfirmed, record the conditions tried, and investigate high-risk reports instead of silently lowering their priority.
3. Classify severity
Assign the player or system harm without considering implementation effort. A one-line fix can still be a blocker; a week-long refactor can still be low priority if it affects only optional polish.

4. Set priority
Discuss reach, frequency, critical-path position, workaround, change risk, dependencies, and time remaining. Record the decision and the owner, not just a label.
5. Choose the smallest safe fix
Prefer an isolated change that addresses the reproduced cause and can be tested within the remaining schedule. If the only available change is broad or risky, consider a player-facing mitigation, disabling the affected optional feature, or reverting to the known-good candidate.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

6. Retest the original failure
On the named candidate, reproduce the pre-fix behavior, install the change, and repeat the exact steps. A ticket is not fixed because code was merged; it is fixed when the failure no longer occurs under the recorded conditions.
7. Run smoke and regression checks
Test the changed system and the paths around it. A save fix requires more than loading one file; check new saves, existing saves, overwrites, checkpoints, and the transitions that use the saved data. A control fix requires the affected device plus the other supported input paths.
8. Make the ship call
Ship only when blockers are closed or an explicit mitigation is accepted, required platform checks pass, and the release candidate has been certified or otherwise validated. Document every remaining issue, its reach, workaround, and patch plan. Preserve the candidate that produced the evidence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Decide between fixing, mitigating, and deferring
| Situation | Recommended action | Required evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Deterministic crash on launch or common progression path | Fix before release; do not substitute an untested build | Reproduction on the candidate, fix retest, smoke and regression results |
| Save corruption with no reliable recovery | Block release until fixed or a verified safe release path exists | Multiple save/load scenarios, existing-save test, and recovery verification |
| Severe issue on one supported platform | Fix or remove that platform from the stated support scope only if the business and platform rules allow it | Platform-specific reproduction and validation result |
| Cosmetic defect in optional content | Defer when the change risks the candidate; document it for a patch | Confirmation that required paths and advertised features remain intact |
| Intermittent report with high potential impact | Investigate and attempt to increase observability; do not dismiss because it is hard to reproduce | Logs, video, hardware and session context, and all attempted reproduction conditions |
| Minor issue with a safe, tested workaround | Mitigate and communicate the workaround; schedule a patch if worthwhile | Proof that the workaround preserves progress and does not mislead players |
A mitigation is acceptable only when players can understand it and continue safely. “Restart until it works” is not a meaningful workaround for a save or progression failure.
Validate the release candidate, not just the code change
Certification and storefront review examine the shipped release build. Run the required basic validation with the same package intended for release, including installation, first launch, sign-in or entitlement flows, suspend and resume behavior where applicable, controller handling, save and load, and any required content disclosures.
Best Value
If validation finds a failure, correct it before resubmission. Do not assume that a local developer build proves the packaged candidate works: packaging, permissions, assets, configuration, and platform services can change the result.
After validation, avoid swapping in an unrelated texture, localization, or optimization change without repeating the relevant checks. The value of a known-good build is that its behavior is already evidenced; a late replacement removes that evidence.
Keep the tracker useful under deadline pressure
Use explicit states
Useful states include reported, needs reproduction, confirmed, prioritized, in progress, ready for retest, verified, deferred, mitigated, and reopened. Define who may move a report between states so “fixed” cannot mean merely “developer says done.”
Link reports to changes and tests
Attach the change or build that claims to address the issue, the tester who retested it, the date, and the result. If a regression appears, link the new report to the original rather than deleting history.
Hold short, evidence-based triage meetings
Review new reports, changed severity or reach, blocked dependencies, fixes ready for retest, reopened failures, and the candidate’s validation status. Avoid spending the meeting debating speculative polish while an untested blocker lacks an owner.
Communicate accepted risk
For each deferred issue, write the affected platform or player group, reproduction conditions, workaround, why the risk is accepted, owner, and intended patch window. This gives support and community teams accurate information instead of forcing them to infer behavior from an internal ticket.
Final pre-launch checks
Before signing off the candidate, confirm each item below against the exact build identifier:
- Launch, loading, pause, resume, and quit paths complete without crashes or unrecoverable hangs.
- New, existing, manual, automatic, checkpoint, and interrupted-session saves load correctly.
- Main progression, required content, tutorials, and the intended ending are completable.
- Supported input devices, rebinding, focus navigation, and disconnect recovery work.
- Minimum supported hardware and important graphics settings have a focused performance pass.
- Required accessibility, localization, entitlement, downloadable content, and achievement flows are validated.
- Platform or storefront certification findings are closed or formally accepted by the responsible owner.
- Every claimed fix has a linked retest, and smoke and regression passes cover the changed systems.
- Deferred issues have player-facing workarounds or clear documentation where needed.
- The validated candidate and its test evidence are preserved as the rollback option.
The final decision is therefore a risk decision supported by reproduction and validation evidence, not a race to reach an arbitrary open-bug total.
