When a researcher privately reports a possible vulnerability, acknowledge it promptly, keep the details out of public channels, and move through a documented process: validate the report, assess risk, coordinate a fix, test it, and disclose actionable remediation guidance. There is no universal response deadline for every project; set expectations that fit your capacity and the issue’s risk.
Set up a private reporting route before you need one
Publish a security policy or clear reporting instructions that tell researchers how to contact the project privately. If you maintain a GitHub repository, distinguish its SECURITY.md guidance from GitHub’s private vulnerability reporting feature: they are separate. The feature is available for public repositories when an owner or administrator enables it. GitHub explains both routes in its coordinated disclosure guidance and its private reporting instructions.

If private reporting is unavailable, follow the repository’s published contact instructions. If none exist, GitHub suggests opening a public issue to ask for the preferred security contact; because that issue is immediately visible, do not include vulnerability details, reproduction steps, affected versions, or proof of concept.
Acknowledge the report safely
Confirm receipt as soon as practical, thank the reporter, say the report is being assessed, and give a realistic date or interval for the next update. You do not need a complete technical answer before acknowledging. GitHub Docs, in “Coordinated disclosure of security vulnerabilities,” advises: “Acknowledge receipt of the vulnerability report as quickly as possible, even if no immediate resources are available for investigation.”
#1 Best Overall
Keep the acknowledgement in the private channel. If you need to move the conversation, agree on a secure contact method first; do not ask the reporter to post technical details in a public issue or pull request.
Triage and validate the report
Assign a maintainer to own the next action and establish whether the report describes a security vulnerability, an ordinary bug, expected behavior, a duplicate, or a claim that needs more evidence. Record what is known and what remains uncertain rather than treating an unverified impact statement as confirmed.
Rank #2
Gather the facts needed to reproduce it
- Identify the affected project, component, versions, deployment environment, and relevant configuration.
- Review the reporter’s reproduction steps, proof of concept, and explanation of the claimed impact.
- Ask focused follow-up questions if a step, prerequisite, or affected version is unclear.
- Attempt to reproduce the behavior in a controlled environment and note the result.
GitHub’s private report form requests a summary, details, proof of concept, and impact by default, though maintainers can customize it. Treat those fields as useful starting evidence, not a substitute for validation. GitHub says the submission notifies maintainers and automatically adds the reporter as a collaborator and credited user on the proposed advisory; review access and contributions according to the project’s process.
Prioritize by risk, not by a score alone
Assess exploitability, likely consequences, the number and type of users affected, the versions in use, and any evidence of active exploitation. Write down the rationale, the person responsible, and the next action so that urgency is not lost between maintainers. A CVSS score can help describe severity, but it should not replace project-specific judgment. CISA guidance for election administrators describes prioritization by risk to mission; that is an agency example, not a universal rule for open-source projects.
Rank #3
Coordinate privately and agree on expectations
Limit unpatched details to people who need them to validate or remediate the issue. Agree with the reporter on an update cadence and a disclosure target, and discuss how to proceed if the patch is delayed or details become public. Keep the reporter informed even when progress is blocked, and renegotiate a target when the facts or remediation work change.
There is no single deadline that applies to all maintainers. GitHub recommends prompt acknowledgement and timely disclosure but does not set a universal number of hours or days. The OpenSSF OSS-SIRT Coordinated Vulnerability Disclosure Policy is a draft v0.1 last updated 2026-06-03; its own targets are acknowledgement within 2 business days and an initial triage or validation assessment within 10 business days. The draft says targets can vary with severity, active exploitation, or patch complexity and should be negotiated. These are one organization’s draft policy commitments, not an industry-wide standard or measured response times.

Develop and test the fix
Where practical, prepare the fix or mitigation privately. Check which releases and supported branches are affected, test the correction, and look for likely regressions. Prepare upgrade or mitigation instructions that users can follow, including any conditions or configuration changes they need to know.

GitHub maintainers can collaborate on a private draft repository advisory. A reporter may participate in discussion and a temporary private fork, subject to maintainer review and merge. Keep access restricted and review proposed changes before incorporating them.
Best Value
Disclose with clear remediation guidance
Coordinate publication of the advisory with release of the fix or mitigation when practical. State affected versions, fixed versions, and concrete steps users should take. Mark the security fix clearly in release notes so downstream users can identify the update. Credit the reporter unless they ask to remain anonymous. If publishing full technical detail before users can update would create avoidable risk, use judgment about what to share and when.
Use response targets that fit your project
Document who receives reports, who can access them, how ownership is assigned, and how reporters will receive updates. A small volunteer project may need to set expectations differently from a staffed security response team; the important thing is to communicate a realistic plan and revisit it as circumstances change. Federal agency requirements should not be generalized to all maintainers: CISA’s BOD 20-01 applies to federal civilian executive branch agencies.
