Move an oversized pumpkin as a supported load, not as something people simply carry. Plan the destination and route first, measure the fruit and every opening it must pass through, choose a tarp, lifting ring, hoist, or machine that fits the site, and decide how the pumpkin will be unloaded before you lift it. For road travel, keep the fruit from rolling, protect its skin from straps and hard edges, and recheck the load during stops.

The often-cited limit of about 180 kg (400 lb) for people-powered movement comes from Giant Pumpkins NZ as a practical estimate, not an occupational-safety standard or a guarantee that a particular group can handle that weight. Heavier fruit normally calls for rated equipment and a competent operator.

Why an oversized pumpkin is easy to damage

Giant pumpkins are awkward as well as heavy. Their rounded shape can roll or rotate when a helper loses grip, their skin can be cut by a strap or pallet edge, and a sudden stop can make the fruit strike a wall or another load. A move that works across a garden may fail when the pumpkin must be raised onto a trailer, squeezed through a doorway, or unloaded on soft ground.

The safest plan treats four things as one system: the pumpkin, its support, the lifting equipment, and the destination. A lifting ring or strap arrangement that is acceptable on level ground may be unsuitable for a high lift. A vehicle with enough payload may still have wheel arches or a tailgate opening that the fruit cannot clear. A display platform that holds the weight may be unstable on grass or may put hard pressure on the pumpkin’s underside.

No universal engineered load rating or general display-stand specification is established for giant pumpkins. Check the rating and instructions for each ring, strap, hoist, pallet, trailer, and machine, and use an experienced operator when powered equipment is involved.

Plan the route and destination before touching the pumpkin

Survey the entire path

Walk the route from the growing spot to the loading point and then from the vehicle to the display site. Note gates, doorways, low branches, steps, narrow turns, overhead lines, muddy sections, slopes, and places where a machine may have to turn. Remove trip hazards and obstructing vines, but do not pull on the pumpkin or its stem to clear a path.

Ground conditions matter. A tractor, skid steer, forklift, or telehandler can lose traction or sink on soft ground. If a path is wet, decide whether a different route, ground protection, or a hand move is appropriate. Keep bystanders away from the lift area and establish where helpers will stand before equipment arrives.

Confirm the destination’s unloading plan

Ask the venue, weigh-off, or event organizer these questions before departure:

  • What arrival time applies, and is there a separate queue for large entries?
  • Must the pumpkin arrive on a pallet or pallet rack?
  • Will the venue provide a forklift, and who is authorized to operate it?
  • Where can a truck or trailer stop, and what surface will the load cross?
  • How long will the pumpkin remain on display, and what support will hold it?
  • Does the venue require the fruit to be removed from a tarp or carrying device before weighing?

Requirements can be highly specific. The Half Moon Bay Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off’s 2026 rules, for example, require growers to deliver entries by 7:00 a.m.; event staff move entries by forklift. The rules describe a 5-ton-capacity digital scale and state that pumpkins are weighed without tarps or other carrying devices. Those details apply to that event and year, not to every weigh-off.

Assign one person to direct the move

Choose a single coordinator who can see the load and give commands. Everyone else should know the agreed words for “lift,” “lower,” “stop,” and “clear.” The grower or load coordinator should have final say. If a strap shifts, a machine approaches an obstacle, a helper loses footing, or anything feels wrong, call “stop,” set the pumpkin down if possible, and reset the arrangement.

Measure the pumpkin, vehicle, and support

Measure before arranging a lift. Record the pumpkin’s greatest width, height, and approximate weight, then measure the vehicle or trailer opening, interior width, deck height, wheel-arch intrusion, tailgate, and available tie-down points. If a pallet or rack will be used, measure its outside dimensions and the height added beneath the fruit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare the measurements with every tight point on the route. A fruit that fits between the trailer sides may not clear the wheel arches. A pallet that fits the deck may not pass through the venue’s gate. Include room for padding and for helpers to place or remove straps without pinching their hands.

Measurement or check Why it matters
Pumpkin width and height Determines whether gates, doors, trailer sides, and display openings can be cleared.
Vehicle or trailer deck and opening Shows whether the fruit or pallet can be loaded without striking the tailgate or sidewalls.
Wheel-arch position Can reduce usable width even when the stated bed width looks adequate.
Pallet or rack footprint Must sit fully on the deck and remain compatible with the venue’s forklift or unloading method.
Loading and unloading height Determines whether a low tarp move is possible or a hoist, liftgate, ramp, or forklift is required.
Tie-down points and load position Allow restraints to hold the support without pressing directly into the pumpkin.

Choose a support method that matches the load

The right method depends on weight and shape, distance, ground, access for machinery, experienced helpers, vehicle fit, unloading equipment, pallet requirements, and the chance of straps or hard surfaces touching the skin.

Method Best fit Important limits and checks
Tarp or lifting sheet with handholds A short, low move by a coordinated group when the fruit and ground permit it. Helpers must share the load and footing. Do not treat a consumer tarp as suitable for a known weight unless its rating and construction support that use.
Lifting ring with evenly spaced straps and a lower base strap or rope Raising a large pumpkin with a tractor, skid steer, forklift, telehandler, or other compatible machinery. Use only equipment with verified ratings and a trained operator. Ask someone experienced with lifting rings to check an unfamiliar setup.
Tripod and chain block A controlled lift where a properly positioned tripod can be erected and the site permits it. The tripod, chain block, anchor points, and ground must be suitable for the actual load. The available guidance gives no universal safe working load.
Pallet or pallet rack Transport and display arrangements that let a forklift or pallet jack engage the load. The rack must support the fruit without concentrated pressure and must fit both the vehicle and destination equipment.

When a people-powered move is reasonable

Giant Pumpkins NZ describes a practical upper estimate of around 180 kg (400 lb) for moving a pumpkin with people. That figure is source-specific advice, not a legal limit, a lifting study, or proof that any particular team can safely move that mass. Smaller or awkwardly shaped fruit may be unsafe well below it; a smooth, level path and a well-designed sheet may make a lighter move manageable.

  1. Clear the route and place the tarp or sheet beside the pumpkin.
  2. Have helpers tilt the fruit only enough to slide the sheet underneath. Do not lever against the stem or drag the pumpkin across rough ground.
  3. Center the pumpkin so the support extends evenly around it and no edge bears against one spot.
  4. Space helpers around the support, with a coordinator calling every movement.
  5. Lift together, take short steps, and keep the load low. If anyone loses grip or footing, lower it gently rather than trying to save the lift.
  6. Set the pumpkin down on a padded, level surface before changing hand positions or preparing the vehicle.

When mechanical assistance is the better choice

For a large fruit, the specialist guidance describes a lifting ring with evenly spaced straps and a lower strap or rope supporting the base. It also lists a tractor, skid steer, forklift, or telehandler, and a tripod with a chain block where the site allows one. The equipment must be selected and checked for the actual load; no source establishes a safe working load for a particular ring, strap, machine, chain block, or tripod.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Inspect the ring, straps, hooks, chain, and attachment points for damage, and confirm each manufacturer’s rating for the intended configuration.
  2. Place the base support under the pumpkin so the fruit cannot slide through when tension is applied.
  3. Arrange the upper straps evenly around the ring. Keep buckles, hooks, and sharp hardware away from the skin.
  4. Connect the lifting device at the designated points and keep every person outside the potential fall and swing zones.
  5. Take up slack slowly and make a few-centimeter test lift. Check that the pumpkin stays centered, the straps do not cut into it, and the support is not twisting.
  6. Lower and reset if the fruit tilts, a strap migrates, or the machine is not square to the load. Only then raise it high enough to clear obstacles.
  7. Move slowly, with a spotter watching clearance and the coordinator controlling the commands.

Protect the pumpkin before loading

Inspect the contact areas

Look for stones, splinters, exposed nails, sharp pallet corners, and debris on the vehicle deck. Cover hard edges with appropriate soft padding. Padding should prevent cutting and scratching without creating an unstable cushion that lets the fruit roll.

Keep straps and ropes from bearing directly on the skin. Use padding at every contact point and confirm that the restraint still holds the support rather than merely squeezing the pumpkin. Do not place metal hooks, ratchets, or chain links against the fruit.

Keep the underside supported

A rounded pumpkin needs broad, even support. A pallet rack, lifting sheet, or base strap should carry the underside rather than concentrating force at a stem, a small block, or one corner of a board. Check that the pumpkin cannot rock when the support is placed on the ground or vehicle.

Separate the fruit from other cargo

Remove loose tools and objects from the load area. Smaller pumpkins should be packed so they cannot roll or strike one another. For a single giant pumpkin, leave clearance around it and use soft packing to prevent movement without wedging hard material into the skin.

Load the vehicle or trailer step by step

  1. Park on the firmest, most level surface available, set the parking brake, and secure the trailer or vehicle according to its instructions.
  2. Confirm that the planned load position keeps the pumpkin or pallet clear of wheel arches, sidewalls, the tailgate, and the roof or cover.
  3. Place the support squarely on the deck. If a machine is lifting, keep everyone clear until the load is stable.
  4. Position the mass with attention to the vehicle’s axles. Do not move all the weight to the extreme rear or one side.
  5. Lower the pumpkin gently, then check that its support is flat and that no strap, board, or corner is pressing into the skin.
  6. Install tie-downs at the support’s designated points. Use padding wherever a restraint could touch the pumpkin or its support.
  7. Close or remove the tailgate only after checking that it cannot contact the fruit when the vehicle flexes or turns.
  8. Walk around the entire load and verify that nothing can roll, slide, or fall before driving.

Secure the load for road travel

Large pumpkins should be restrained with tie-down straps appropriate to the load and attachment points. The straps should hold the pallet, rack, tarp, or base support in place; tightening them directly over the fruit can damage the skin. Use soft packing around the pumpkin so it cannot roll into the trailer wall or another object.

Keep the route and speed conservative. Avoid abrupt braking, sharp turns, and rough shoulders. On a longer journey, stop in a safe location and inspect the pumpkin, padding, straps, buckles, and support. Re-tighten or reposition only when the vehicle is parked and secured. A strap that has loosened or migrated is a reason to stop and reset, not to continue slowly and hope it holds.

Do not assume that a vehicle’s payload rating alone proves the arrangement is safe. The deck, tie-down points, pallet, lifting support, and axle distribution all need to suit the actual load. If you cannot verify the setup, ask a qualified transport or equipment professional to review it.

Coordinate arrival, weighing, and unloading

Event rules override general practice

Read the current rules for the specific weigh-off. Delivery windows, parking, pallet requirements, scale procedures, and who operates the forklift can change from year to year. At Half Moon Bay’s 2026 event, growers are responsible for arriving by 7:00 a.m., event staff move entries by forklift, the digital scale is rated to 5 tons, and the pumpkin is weighed without a tarp or other carrying device. Remove a carrying device only when the event’s staff and procedure call for it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tell the organizer in advance if your fruit needs a particular pallet, rack, or unloading approach. Have the coordinator remain with the load until venue staff accept it. Keep the vehicle in the instructed position and do not ask untrained bystanders to guide a forklift.

Use a display support designed for the actual site

A public display needs more than a platform that can hold the static weight. Consider stability on the venue’s surface, access for visitors, protection from hard edges, drainage or rain, and how the pumpkin will be removed. The site operator should determine whether a rack, pallet, cradle, or other support is suitable and how it will be inspected during the display period.

A University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension account describes one real arrangement: grower Bruce Hooker arrived at a weigh-off with a pallet rack and lifting ring to help transport Steve Geddes’s pumpkin. The pumpkin was later displayed at the New York Botanical Garden through Halloween. Geddes recalled: “I had never met (Hooker) before,” said Geddes. “He showed up with a pallet rack and a lifting ring, and we were off. There’s the story of how I got hooked. It isn’t just the fascination of growing the plants, it’s the people involved.” This demonstrates a practical transport-and-display combination, not a universal design, capacity, or weather-resistance recommendation.

Troubleshoot common problems before they become damage

Problem Stop and correct it by
The pumpkin does not clear the trailer opening or wheel arches. Lower it, remeasure with the support and padding included, and use a different vehicle or unloading plan. Never force it through.
A strap is cutting into or sliding toward the skin. Stop, slacken the restraint, add suitable padding, and reposition it to hold the support rather than the fruit.
The load rolls when the vehicle turns. Park safely, add soft packing and correctly placed restraints, and check that the support is level and attached to tie-down points.
The ground sinks under a machine or tripod. Stop the lift. Use a firmer route or a site-approved ground-support solution, and have a competent operator reassess the setup.
Helpers disagree about the next movement. Lower the load if safe, regroup, and let one coordinator issue commands. A confused lift should not continue.
The venue’s equipment or rules differ from what was expected. Keep the pumpkin secured and contact the organizer. Do not improvise a forklift lift, scale procedure, or display stand.
The pumpkin must be displayed for several days. Ask the site operator to confirm support stability, visitor clearance, weather exposure, and inspection frequency for the actual location.

A practical decision checklist

Use this checklist in order. If any answer is unknown, delay the move until it is resolved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Destination: Do you know the arrival time, unloading method, pallet requirement, and display location?
  • Route: Are gates, turns, slopes, overhead obstacles, trip hazards, and ground conditions suitable?
  • Dimensions: Have you measured the pumpkin, support, vehicle opening, wheel arches, deck, and display access?
  • Weight and method: Is a coordinated low tarp move genuinely within the team’s ability, or is mechanical assistance needed?
  • Equipment: Are the ring, straps, hoist, machine, pallet, and tie-down points rated and undamaged for this configuration?
  • Protection: Are hard edges covered and all strap contact points padded?
  • People: Is there one coordinator, an agreed command system, and a clear exclusion area?
  • Vehicle: Is the load balanced over the axles and secured against rolling, sliding, and sudden stops?
  • Travel: Will someone inspect the restraints and support during longer stops?
  • Display: Has the venue confirmed that the stand or rack is stable and appropriate for the actual surface and duration?

The most reliable move is the one that can be stopped and reset without putting anyone under a suspended or rolling load. Plan the destination first, use broad support under the pumpkin, protect every contact point, and match the lifting method to verified equipment and competent help. That approach preserves the fruit while giving the venue a clear, controlled way to unload and display it.
