For a complete move to Nintendo Switch 2, run Nintendo’s System Transfer during the new console’s initial setup. It moves eligible digital games, save data, linked Nintendo Accounts and settings, while games are redownloaded afterward. If you only need The Midnight Walk save, use System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data on both consoles. Nearby transfer does not make a backup: Nintendo deletes the save from the old Switch after sending it, and an existing save on Switch 2 can be overwritten.
The Midnight Walk is listed for Nintendo Switch 2 with a March 26, 2026 release date. Its Nintendo listings show a download of approximately 14.6–14.7 GB and Save Data Cloud support. Nintendo Switch Online is required for cloud backup.

Choose the right transfer method first
Your choice depends on whether Switch 2 is replacing the old console or you are moving only one game.
| Route | What it moves | When to use it | Important risk or requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| System Transfer | Eligible digital games, save data, linked Nintendo Accounts and settings | During Switch 2’s initial setup when you are migrating the console | Internet access is required; at least one source user must be linked to a Nintendo Account. Digital games redownload after the transfer. |
| Nearby save transfer | One selected user’s save for one compatible game | After setup, when you want only a particular save | Both consoles must be available and online. The sent save is deleted from the source; a target save may be overwritten. |
| Save Data Cloud | A backed-up compatible save associated with your Nintendo Account | When the source console is unavailable or you want an extra safety net | Requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and a completed cloud backup. |
Do not start a nearby transfer simply because it sounds faster. It is a move, not a copy. If you want the old Switch to retain the save, make a separate cloud backup first or choose a migration plan that preserves the data you need.

What you need before touching either console
Update and charge both systems
Install the latest system update on the source Switch before using nearby transfer. Charge both consoles or keep them connected to power. A shutdown during a transfer can leave you unable to finish the process and makes troubleshooting harder.
Confirm the account that owns the save
Switch saves belong to a user profile. Identify the profile that played The Midnight Walk, then verify that it is linked to the same Nintendo Account you will use on Switch 2. A different profile on the new console will not automatically become the owner of the old profile’s local save.
Decide whether you are migrating everything
If Switch 2 is replacing your original console, plan to use System Transfer during setup. If the new console is already configured and you only need The Midnight Walk, nearby save transfer is the narrower route. Write down which profiles and games you intend to move before you confirm anything.
Check storage for the game
Nintendo’s official listings put The Midnight Walk at approximately 14.6–14.7 GB, depending on the listing. Leave at least that much free space, plus room for system data and updates. Nintendo says Switch 2 accepts microSD Express cards if internal storage is insufficient. A card does not protect a save by itself; save handling still follows Nintendo’s transfer and cloud rules.
Prepare a cloud fallback when available
The game listing supports Save Data Cloud. An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to back up saves there. Before a destructive nearby transfer, confirm that the relevant save has actually uploaded under the correct Nintendo Account. Cloud backup is a safety measure, not a substitute for checking the profile and game on the destination system.
Option 1: use System Transfer during Switch 2 setup
Nintendo describes System Transfer as the way to move purchased digital games, save data and account information to Switch 2. This route is intended for a whole-console migration rather than a single game.
What System Transfer includes
- Eligible digital games associated with the transferring Nintendo Accounts.
- Compatible save data for users being moved.
- Linked Nintendo Accounts and console settings covered by Nintendo’s transfer process.
- Automatic redownload of digital games after the transfer, so the transfer does not need to copy every game installation directly.
Physical game cards still need to be inserted when you play those games. A transfer moves eligible digital purchases and saves; it does not turn a physical cartridge into a digital license.

System Transfer sequence
- Keep the original Switch and Switch 2 near one another, connect both to the internet and connect them to power.
- Turn on Switch 2 and begin its initial setup. Choose the option to transfer data from a Nintendo Switch when the setup flow presents it.
- On the source console, follow Nintendo’s transfer prompts and select the user profiles and data you intend to migrate. At least one source user must be linked to a Nintendo Account.
- Confirm the destination Nintendo Account and review the transfer summary before accepting it. Stop if the displayed user, account or console is not the one you expect.
- Allow the consoles to complete the server-based transfer without closing the setup screens or disconnecting either system.
- After setup, connect Switch 2 to the internet and let the transferred digital games redownload. Open the game only after the correct user profile and save are visible.
The setup-time route is safest when you are moving the entire system because Nintendo’s transfer flow is tied to the new console’s initial setup. If you skip it, you can still move an individual compatible save later with nearby transfer, but you will no longer be performing the one-time whole-system migration at that moment.
Option 2: transfer only The Midnight Walk save
Nearby transfer works with Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite and Nintendo Switch OLED models for compatible software. Nintendo Switch Online is not required for this local transfer. Both consoles must be present and connected to the internet.
On the old Switch: send the save
- Install the latest system update on the source console. Put both consoles close together and connect them to the internet.
- Open System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data.
- Choose Send Save Data to Another Console.
- Select the user profile that owns The Midnight Walk save.
- Select The Midnight Walk in the software list, then choose Next and OK when the source console asks you to confirm.
On Switch 2: receive the save
- Open System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data on Switch 2.
- Choose Receive Save Data.
- Accept the transfer when the consoles identify one another and wait for the completion message on both screens.
- Open The Midnight Walk with the same user profile that received the save. Confirm your progress before starting a new game or changing settings.
The menu names above are Nintendo’s nearby-transfer labels. If either console does not show the other, check that both are online, nearby and running current system software, then reopen the transfer menu on both systems.
Understand the irreversible parts before confirming
The source save is deleted
Nintendo explicitly warns that nearby transfer does not create a copy. Once the save is sent, the save file is deleted from the source console. Treat the final confirmation on the source as irreversible unless you have a separate cloud backup.
A destination save can be overwritten
If Switch 2 already has a The Midnight Walk save, the receive process can replace it. Stop at the overwrite warning and decide which progress matters. Nintendo warns that overwritten save data cannot be recovered through the transfer screen.
Do not test by launching the game first
Starting the game on Switch 2 can create a new save for the destination profile. That is not automatically merged with the old save. Decide which file you want to keep before you launch, and use the transfer or cloud-restore route that matches that decision.
Use Save Data Cloud as a safety net
The Midnight Walk supports Save Data Cloud according to Nintendo’s game listing. Cloud backup requires Nintendo Switch Online, and the membership must be active on the account associated with the save.

Before moving the save
- Check that the game’s current progress is the version you want to preserve.
- Verify the source profile is linked to the Nintendo Account with the Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Confirm that a recent cloud backup exists before deleting the local source save through nearby transfer.
When cloud restore is the better route
Use cloud restore when the original console is unavailable, when you want to avoid the local source-deletion step, or when a local transfer would overwrite progress you still need. On Switch 2, use Nintendo’s Save Data Cloud controls for the same Nintendo Account and game, then launch the title with the matching user profile. Cloud availability is game-specific, so do not assume every Switch title supports it; The Midnight Walk is listed as supported.
Storage and download planning for The Midnight Walk
The Nintendo listings give a download size of approximately 14.6–14.7 GB. That figure describes the listed game download, not every future update, save file or system requirement. Keep additional free space so the redownload and updates do not fail at the last step.
| Storage question | Practical answer |
|---|---|
| How large is the listed download? | About 14.6–14.7 GB, according to Nintendo’s 2026 listings. |
| Can Switch 2 expand storage? | Yes. Nintendo’s eShop says Switch 2 is compatible with microSD Express cards. |
| Does extra storage move the save? | No. Storage expansion helps install the game; save transfer still uses System Transfer, nearby transfer or Save Data Cloud. |
| Will System Transfer copy the installed digital game? | Nintendo says digital games are automatically redownloaded after the transfer. |
Troubleshooting by symptom
The Midnight Walk is missing from the software list
Check that you selected the user profile that actually played the game and that the game is installed or recognized on the source console. If the title is not shown, do not select another profile just to continue; that risks moving the wrong save.
The consoles cannot find each other
Place them close together, connect both to the internet, install the latest source-system update and reopen Transfer Your Save Data on both consoles. A nearby transfer requires both consoles at the same time; it cannot be completed from a remote location.
The target warns that a save already exists
Cancel and inspect the target profile before choosing overwrite. If the target progress is valuable, back it up to Save Data Cloud where supported or preserve it by using a different user profile. Nintendo’s warning means an overwritten local save cannot be recovered through the transfer operation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The source save disappeared after sending
That is expected behavior for nearby transfer: it moves rather than copies the file. Check the destination user profile and launch the game there. If the destination is not correct, use a previously verified cloud backup; do not repeat transfers blindly.
The game will not redownload after System Transfer
Reconnect Switch 2 to the internet and verify that the Nintendo Account owning the digital purchase was transferred. System Transfer moves the entitlement and save information, while Nintendo says the digital game itself is redownloaded afterward.
Recommended sequence before your first session
- Update and charge both consoles.
- Confirm the exact Nintendo Account and user profile that contain your save.
- Check that Switch 2 has at least 14.6–14.7 GB free, plus room for updates, or install a compatible microSD Express card.
- If migrating the entire console, perform System Transfer during initial Switch 2 setup.
- If moving only the game, verify a cloud backup first when possible, then use nearby send/receive menus.
- Before accepting any overwrite, stop and compare the source and target progress.
- After transfer, launch The Midnight Walk with the receiving profile and verify the save before beginning play.
Bottom line for The Midnight Walk
Use System Transfer during initial setup if Switch 2 is becoming your main console. Use nearby transfer when you need only The Midnight Walk’s save, but remember that Nintendo deletes the source save and may overwrite an existing destination file. Because the game supports Save Data Cloud, an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and a confirmed backup provide the safest fallback. Once the correct save is visible on Switch 2 and there is enough space for the roughly 14.6–14.7 GB download, you can start the March 26, 2026 release with your progress intact.
