How to Transfer Your PS5 Games, Saves, and Settings to a PS6: What’s Confirmed and How to Prepare

As of 18 October 2026, Sony has not published a PS5-to-PS6 transfer procedure, compatibility matrix, or confirmation that PS5 games, saves, settings, discs, USB drives, or M.2 SSDs will work on a PS6. You therefore cannot safely promise a direct migration yet. You can, however, prepare your PS5 so that any supported option—account redownloads, cloud saves, a network transfer, removable storage, or discs—is ready when Sony documents the console.

Sony’s existing instructions cover transfers from a PS4 or another PS5 to a PS5. That workflow is the best evidence for what information Sony has considered transferable, but it is not proof that the same process will work on a future console.

The short answer: a PS6 transfer is not confirmed

Sony Interactive Entertainment currently documents this operation: “You can transfer (copy) data from a PlayStation®4 console or another PlayStation®5 console to your PS5™ console.” The documentation does not describe a destination PS6.

That distinction matters. A future console could support some, all, or none of the following:

  • Using a direct console-to-console network transfer

None of those PS6 behaviors is confirmed by the Sony material available as of 18 October 2026. Architecture assumptions, leaks, or anonymous claims are not a substitute for Sony’s compatibility and transfer instructions.

What Sony’s documented PS4-to-PS5 and PS5-to-PS5 transfer actually includes

The current Sony workflow requires both consoles to use the same PlayStation Network account, run current system software, and be connected to the same network. A commercially available LAN cable can make the transfer faster; wireless transfer is also supported.

The destination PS5 can receive the following categories of information when supported by the source data:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

  • User and account information
  • Supported saved data
  • Compatible games
  • Screenshots and video clips
  • Console settings, including language, login, and power-saving settings

Sony warns not to turn off either console or change network settings during the transfer. Interrupting the operation can damage or lose data. Content already present on the destination does not transfer again.

This is a description of the existing PS5 destination workflow, not a promise about PS6. Treat every PS6 item as pending until Sony publishes a PS6-specific page.

PS6 transfer status by data type

Data or hardware What is confirmed today What that means for a future PS6
PS5 digital games Digital games can be downloaded from a PS5’s game library after signing in to the same account. Account-based redownloads on PS6 are not confirmed. Wait for Sony’s PS6 licensing and backward-compatibility details.
PS5 game discs On a PS5, a compatible disc game is installed by inserting its disc. PS6 disc support, including whether a disc drive is built in or optional, is not stated.
PS5 saved data PS Plus members can download saved data from cloud storage. Sony states that PS5 saved data cannot be copied to a USB drive. PS6 save restoration and any new export method are unknown. Keep the PS5 and local saves until Sony explains the process.
PS4 saved data PS4 saves can be copied to USB, and PS4-to-PS5 transfer is documented. Whether a PS6 will accept PS4 saves directly, through a PS5, or through USB is unconfirmed.
Console settings The documented PS5 transfer can include language, login, and power-saving settings. PS6 settings migration has not been described. Be prepared to configure the new console manually.
Screenshots and video clips Supported captures can be included in the PS5 transfer. PS6 capture migration is not confirmed. Export important media separately if you cannot replace it.
USB extended storage A USB extended-storage drive can be connected to access compatible game data on a PS5. PS6 support for the same drive, format, or installed games is unknown. Do not erase the drive while waiting.
Internal M.2 SSD An M.2 SSD installed in the source PS5 can be moved to the destination PS5 if it meets Sony’s requirements. PS6 slot dimensions, firmware requirements, and compatibility have not been published.
Direct network transfer PS4-to-PS5 and PS5-to-PS5 transfer use the same network; wired LAN is an available faster option. A PS6 transfer feature, its cable requirements, and whether it runs only during setup are unknown.

Prepare your PS5 before a PS6 announcement

Preparation cannot create compatibility that Sony has not promised, but it prevents avoidable loss and preserves the options Sony may support.

1. Update the PS5 system software

Install the latest available PS5 system software before you begin any future migration. Sony’s documented transfer requires current system software on the consoles. Keeping the source console updated also reduces the chance that a later transfer utility will reject it or require a lengthy update first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Synchronize trophies

Synchronize your trophies while the PS5 is online. Trophies are associated with your account rather than being a substitute for game saves, so synchronization gives you a separate account record if a save cannot be moved.

3. Confirm the account you will use

Write down the PlayStation Network account identity and make sure you can sign in. Digital licenses and cloud saves are tied to the account used on the console; signing in with a different account will not reproduce that library or its cloud data.

4. Keep important saves in more than one place where Sony allows it

If you subscribe to PlayStation Plus, allow important saves to synchronize to cloud storage and verify that recent timestamps appear. Cloud storage is the documented route for downloading saved data to a PS5 and may be the easiest route to a future console, but Sony has not promised that PS6 will use it.

Keep the original PS5 and its local saves until you have successfully restored your games and progress on the new console. Sony specifically states that PS5 saved data cannot be copied to a USB drive. Do not assume that a USB backup application or a file copy is a valid PS5-save backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For PS4 games, Sony does document copying PS4 saves to USB. That is useful for PS4-era progress, but it does not turn a PS5 save into a USB backup.

5. Preserve physical games

Keep every disc for a game you may want to play again. On a PS5, the disc is used to install a compatible game, but PS6 disc support has not been announced. Do not trade in or discard a disc solely because you expect an account download to replace it.

6. Keep a suitable LAN cable available

Sony identifies a commercially available LAN cable as a faster option for its documented console transfer. Retain a working Ethernet cable and, if possible, the network equipment needed to connect both consoles at the same time. A cable cannot guarantee that PS6 will offer a transfer utility, but it leaves the documented wired option available if Sony extends it.

7. Do not erase your USB extended-storage drive

A USB extended-storage drive can provide access to compatible game data on a PS5. Keep the drive intact and label it with the console and games that use it. Whether a PS6 can read the drive, preserve its installed data, or require reformatting is unknown. Reformatting would erase its contents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Leave the M.2 SSD installed until compatibility is clear

Sony permits an M.2 SSD to move from one PS5 to another when it meets Sony’s requirements. That does not establish that a PS6 will accept the same module. Keep the SSD, its mounting hardware, and any installation documentation together, and do not treat the PS5 procedure as a PS6 guarantee.

9. Record each game’s cross-generation save behavior

Make a simple note for games that have separate PS4, PS5, or upgraded versions. Sony’s PS5 FAQ says that transferring saves between a PS4 version and the PS5 version of the same game is a developer decision and varies by title. The same caution applies to any future PS5-to-PS6 upgrade path: a console-level transfer may not convert a game’s save format.

Record which version you played, whether the game offers an in-game import or export, and whether you have completed any publisher-specific account linking. Do not delete the PS5 version until the publisher and Sony explain how that title handles a PS6 version.

How to use the currently documented PS5 workflow as a model

If you are replacing one PS5 with another PS5 today, Sony’s process provides a concrete fallback and shows the conditions a future PS6 utility might require. The same steps should not be presented as a PS6 procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Update both consoles to current system software.
  2. Sign in to the same account on the source and destination consoles.
  3. Connect both consoles to the same network. Use a LAN cable when you want the faster wired option Sony describes; wireless transfer is also supported.
  4. Start Sony’s on-console data-transfer feature and follow the prompts to select the source content and begin copying.
  5. Leave both consoles powered on and do not change network settings while the transfer runs.
  6. After completion, check user information, settings, saved data, captures, and games before disconnecting or erasing the source console.

Because Sony’s published instructions are for a PS5 destination, menu names and eligibility on a PS6 could differ. When a PS6 exists, use the wording and screens in Sony’s official guide rather than relying on a PS5 tutorial.

Ways Sony restores content on a PS5—and the limits of each route

Digital library redownload

After signing in to the same account, digital PS4 games are available in the library on either signed-in console, and digital games can be downloaded to the destination PS5. This avoids copying the full installation over the network, but it still depends on the destination supporting that game and license.

Disc installation

For a compatible disc game, inserting the disc allows installation on a PS5. The disc may also be required as the ownership check when launching. Sony has not said whether a PS6 will read PS5 or PS4 discs, so retain discs until compatibility is official.

USB extended storage

A USB extended-storage drive can be connected to a PS5 to access compatible game data. This is a game-data route, not a confirmed method for moving PS5 saved data. Do not confuse installed game files with progress saves.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

M.2 SSD migration

An M.2 SSD from a source PS5 can be moved to a destination PS5 if the drive satisfies Sony’s requirements. Those requirements are specific to PS5 hardware and should not be applied to a PS6 without a new Sony specification.

PlayStation Plus cloud storage

PlayStation Plus members can download saved data from cloud storage to a PS5. This is the clearest documented off-console route for PS5 saves, but it is not evidence that a PS6 will expose the same download command or support every save format.

USB copy for PS4 saves

Sony allows PS4 saves to be copied to USB. That option may help preserve older progress independently of a console transfer. It does not provide a USB export of PS5 saved data.

What to do immediately after Sony announces the PS6

Do not sell, reset, or trade in the PS5 on announcement day. Verify the exact support information first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Sony’s official console-transfer page and confirm whether it names PS6 as a destination.
  2. Check Sony’s backward-compatibility list for PS5 games, PS4 games, discs, and accessories.
  3. Confirm whether transfer runs during initial setup, after setup, or both.
  4. Check whether the procedure needs the same account, current system software, the same network, a LAN cable, cloud storage, USB storage, or an M.2 SSD.
  5. Read each publisher’s notice for games with separate PS4, PS5, and PS6 versions or in-game save imports.
  6. Transfer or restore a small number of important games first, launch them, and verify progress before wiping the PS5.
  7. Only after verification, decide whether to keep, reset, sell, or repurpose the old console and storage.

Common mistakes and safer responses

  • Assuming account ownership equals compatibility: An account can show a game in a library without proving that the PS6 can run its PS5 version. Wait for Sony’s compatibility statement.
  • Deleting the PS5 after a cloud upload: Cloud synchronization does not prove that a future console can download or convert the save. Keep the local console until restoration is tested.
  • Copying PS5 saves to a USB drive: Sony says PS5 saved data cannot be copied to USB. Use the documented cloud route if subscribed, and preserve the source console.
  • Leaving a transfer unattended while changing network settings: Sony warns that interruption or network changes can damage or lose data. Keep both consoles stable until the process finishes.
  • Formatting external storage for the PS6: Compatibility and formatting requirements are unknown. Formatting erases the existing game data.
  • Expecting every game to convert its save: Save transfer between console generations is a developer decision and varies by title. Check the individual game’s support notice.
  • Treating rumors as a procedure: A leak cannot establish disc, SSD, USB, or save compatibility. Use Sony’s published instructions when available.

What a complete PS6 transfer guide must eventually specify

When Sony publishes the procedure, a useful guide should answer these questions explicitly:

  • Which PS5 games run natively, through backward compatibility, or only through a remastered edition?
  • Can digital licenses be redownloaded by signing in, and are upgrades or editions treated differently?
  • Are PS5 discs readable, and is a disc drive required?
  • Can PS5 saves be restored from PlayStation Plus cloud storage, direct transfer, USB, or another method?
  • Does each game support a save import, and does that support differ between PS5 and PS6 versions?
  • Which user and console settings migrate?
  • Does transfer require the same account, current system software, and the same network?
  • Is wired LAN faster or required, and can transfer run over Wi-Fi?
  • Can a USB extended-storage drive be reused without reformatting?
  • Can an M.2 SSD move across consoles, and what capacity, speed, firmware, and physical requirements apply?
  • Does the process run only during first-time setup or also from system settings later?

Until Sony answers those questions, the responsible answer to “How do I transfer my PS5 games, saves, and settings to a PS6?” is: you cannot perform a confirmed PS6 transfer yet. Prepare the account, saves, discs, storage, and network equipment, keep the PS5 intact, and follow Sony’s PS6-specific instructions once they exist.
