You can move your number to an iPhone with no SIM tray by transferring the line to its built-in eSIM. If your carrier supports Apple’s eSIM Quick Transfer, start on the new iPhone at Settings > Cellular (called Mobile Service in some regions) > Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM. If Quick Transfer is not available, ask your carrier to activate the eSIM or provide its supported alternative, such as a QR code, link, app, or manual activation details.
Before you start: an eSIM does not need a SIM tray
An eSIM is a digital SIM built into supported iPhone models. A physical tray is not required to activate a carrier-issued eSIM, including on some iPhone 14 and later models that use eSIM only. Which transfer and activation methods are available depends on your iPhone model, country or region, carrier, and plan. Apple recommends connecting the new iPhone to Wi-Fi or another available network when adding an eSIM. See Apple’s guide to setting up eSIM on iPhone.

Transfer your number from another iPhone with Quick Transfer
Apple’s eSIM Quick Transfer moves the line from your old iPhone to your new one when your carrier supports the feature. Apple’s currently listed requirements are:

- Both iPhones are signed in to the same Apple Account.
- The old iPhone is unlocked with its passcode.
- The phones are near each other and Bluetooth is turned on.
- Both phones have iOS 18.4 or later.
Carrier support is essential: having compatible iPhones does not guarantee that Quick Transfer will appear for your line. Check Apple’s current instructions at Set up eSIM on iPhone, since software requirements and availability can change.

If the new iPhone is being set up
Follow the cellular-transfer prompt if it appears during setup. Choose the number or plan to transfer, then follow the on-screen directions. Keep both phones nearby and have the old iPhone ready to unlock and confirm the transfer.
If the new iPhone is already set up
- On the new iPhone, open Settings > Cellular or Settings > Mobile Service.
- Tap Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM.
- Select the number or plan to transfer, or choose Transfer From Nearby iPhone if shown.
- Unlock the old iPhone and accept its transfer prompt. Enter a verification code if the phones request one, then follow the remaining instructions.
- Wait for the line to activate on the new iPhone.
When the new plan activates, the old SIM is deactivated and stops working. This is a handoff of the number, not a way to keep the same line active on both phones. Apple states, “After your phone number is transferred to your new iPhone, it stops working on your previous iPhone.” See Apple Support’s cellular setup guide.

If Quick Transfer is not offered
A missing Quick Transfer option does not mean a SIM tray or adapter is needed. Check that the phones meet the requirements above and that the old iPhone can be unlocked and confirm the request. Then ask your carrier whether it supports Quick Transfer for your specific line and which alternative activation method to use.

Apple documents these alternatives in its eSIM setup instructions. Get a QR code or activation details from your carrier; do not assume an old code can be reused unless the carrier confirms that it is still valid. To check general eSIM availability by provider, consult Apple’s wireless carrier support directory. Your carrier is the authority on whether your particular account and number can be transferred, and on any fees or verification steps.

If your old phone is Android or another non-Apple phone
Contact your carrier and ask it to move your existing number to the new iPhone’s eSIM. The carrier can tell you whether it can activate the eSIM directly or needs to issue a QR code or use another activation method. Apple describes direct transfers from some non-Apple phones for selected provider and device combinations with iOS 26 or later; that does not make cross-platform transfer universally available. Follow the carrier’s instructions and Apple’s current eSIM setup guidance.

The new iPhone’s built-in eSIM is provisioned by the carrier. A SIM eject tool, physical SIM adapter, or third-party QR code cannot move your number into it. Use the transfer option on the iPhone when supported; otherwise, get the activation route from your carrier.
