How to Transfer Your Number and Data When Switching to Xfinity Mobile

Yes—you can usually keep your existing mobile number when moving to Xfinity Mobile, but number porting and personal-data transfer are separate jobs. Start the port with Xfinity while your old line is still active, provide the account and port-out details from your current carrier, then activate the new phone’s SIM or eSIM. Photos, contacts and other files will not move just because the number transfers; back them up and use the new phone’s setup process to restore them.

What transfers—and what does not

A carrier transfer (also called porting) moves your telephone number and mobile service from the old carrier to Xfinity Mobile. It does not copy the contents of your phone. Your photos, videos, contacts, messages, authenticator accounts, downloads and app data remain on the old device or in whatever backup system you use.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Think of the switch as two linked workflows:

  • Number and service: Xfinity validates your old-carrier account, transfers the number and activates a SIM or eSIM.
  • Personal data: You back up content and use the new phone’s operating-system setup tools to copy or restore it.

If you keep the same phone, you normally need the number transfer and service activation, not a full device-to-device migration. If you buy or use a different phone, plan for both workflows.

Same phone or a new phone?

Your situation Number and service task Data task
Keeping your current, compatible phone Port the number to Xfinity and install or activate the Xfinity SIM/eSIM. Usually no complete migration is needed, but keep a current backup in case activation or troubleshooting requires a reset.
Moving to a new phone Port the number and activate the new phone’s SIM or eSIM. Use the new phone’s setup wizard to copy from the old phone or restore from a cloud backup.

A quick eSIM transfer between two phones is a device-activation feature, not a carrier port. Even when it is available, you still need to complete the number-transfer steps if the number is coming from another carrier.

Before you begin: keep the old line active

Do not cancel your existing carrier before the port finishes. Xfinity says the number stays active on the current device until the transfer and new activation are complete. Canceling early can stop the transfer and put the number at risk.

Leave the old phone powered on and able to receive calls or texts while the request is processed. Keep access to the old carrier’s website, app or customer service in case it sends a verification code or requires you to generate a port-out PIN. Do not erase or trade in the phone simply because the Xfinity order has shipped or an eSIM download has started; wait until the new line is working.

Back up your photos and other personal data

Xfinity’s switch guidance says: “Next, back up your photos and data to your cloud account.” The advice does not name a particular cloud provider or say that a paid plan is required. Use a backup destination you can access from the new phone, and check that the backup has finished before erasing, trading in or mailing the old device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to check before changing phones

  • Photos and videos are visible in the backup service from another device or its web interface.
  • Contacts are synchronized to an account rather than stored only on the handset or SIM.
  • Important text messages, call history, notes, calendars and files have a supported backup or export.
  • Two-factor-authentication apps, passkeys and recovery codes are ready to be moved; many security apps require their own transfer procedure.
  • You know the passwords for your cloud account, email and other essential services.
  • The new phone has enough available storage for the content you plan to restore.

Keep the old phone available while the new phone is being configured. The exact transfer choices depend on the old and new devices and their operating systems, so follow the setup prompts shown on the new phone. Open several recent photos, contacts and other important files on the new device before wiping the old one.

Porting does not create a backup. If you are keeping the same phone, a full migration may be unnecessary, but a recent backup still protects against accidental deletion, a failed activation or a later factory reset.

Collect the information your current carrier requires

Have these details ready before opening Xfinity’s activation flow:

  • The mobile number you want to move.
  • Your current carrier’s account number.
  • The account-holder’s name exactly as it appears on the old account.
  • The billing address on that account.
  • The last four digits of the primary account holder’s Social Security number, if requested.
  • The current carrier’s transfer PIN or port-out PIN.

The transfer PIN is often a temporary security code and may be different from the normal account PIN. Get the port-specific value from the current carrier immediately before starting, and copy it exactly. A wrong PIN, mismatched account name or outdated billing address can delay or reject the request.

For a family or multi-line account, confirm which line is being moved and who is listed as the primary account holder. The information Xfinity requests is tied to the old carrier’s records, not merely to the person using the phone. If the old carrier gives you a separate account number for each line, use the number associated with the line being ported.

Why these details matter

The port request is an authorization check. Xfinity needs the old carrier’s identifying information to match before it can release the number. Treat the port PIN as sensitive account information: enter it only in the official Xfinity activation flow or with an authorized support representative, and do not post it in a public forum or send it to an unverified person.

Start the number transfer with Xfinity

Xfinity says you can begin during activation or through the Xfinity app. For an existing Xfinity Mobile line, the documented app path is:

  1. Sign in to the Xfinity app.
  2. Open Services.
  3. Select Activate more devices.
  4. Under Mobile, choose Purchased from Xfinity.
  5. Select the Xfinity Mobile line that will use the phone.
  6. Enter the phone number, current-carrier details, account-holder information, verification details, transfer PIN and billing address requested on screen.
  7. Review the entries and submit the transfer.

App labels can change, and the available choices vary with your account and device. Follow the current on-screen flow if it differs from this sequence. If you are activating a newly purchased phone rather than adding it to an existing line, use the activation prompts supplied during setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Submit the port before terminating the old service. The old carrier may continue billing until its line closes, so check that carrier’s cancellation and final-bill rules after Xfinity confirms the number has moved. Keep copies of confirmation messages and note the time you submitted the request; those details help support staff locate a stalled transfer.

Activate the SIM or eSIM

After the port request, complete the phone activation steps. Xfinity’s instructions cover both installing an eSIM and inserting a physical SIM.

Physical SIM

Insert the SIM in the tray specified by the phone manufacturer, then follow the activation prompts. Make sure the card is seated correctly and that the phone is using the Xfinity SIM rather than an old carrier card. If the phone has more than one SIM slot, select the Xfinity line as the line used for calls, texts and mobile data in the device settings.

eSIM

An eSIM is downloaded to the phone instead of inserted as a card. Follow the activation prompt to install it, and leave the phone connected to Wi-Fi or another working internet connection while the profile downloads. Do not remove a working old profile until the replacement line is ready unless the setup instructions specifically direct you to do so.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quick eSIM transfer between devices

Xfinity documents quick transfer for select hardware and software combinations. Its supported examples move an eSIM from iPhone to iPhone or from Android to Android, subject to the specific model and software version. The devices must be compatible; a quick eSIM transfer is not the same as moving a telephone number from another carrier.

If quick transfer is not offered, use the regular Xfinity activation process to install the eSIM or insert the physical SIM. Do not erase the old phone until the new device can place calls and receive texts.

Move your data onto the new phone

Once the new phone reaches its setup screen, choose its data-transfer or restore option. The wording differs by operating system and model, but the setup flow commonly offers a direct cable or wireless copy, a cloud restore, or both.

  1. Connect the new phone to Wi-Fi and charge both phones.
  2. Sign in with the account used for your backup when prompted.
  3. Choose the old phone, cloud backup or transfer method shown by the setup wizard.
  4. Select the categories you want to restore, such as contacts, photos, calendars, messages and device settings.
  5. Keep both phones nearby and unlocked for the duration of a direct transfer.
  6. After setup, open representative files and apps and verify that recent content is present.

Not every app can restore its private data automatically. Banking apps, authenticator apps, downloaded media and some messaging services may require a separate sign-in, export or device-approval step. Treat the cloud backup as a safety net, not proof that every item has moved. If a category is missing, keep the old phone intact and use that app’s own export or transfer instructions before trying another reset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long the switch can take

Xfinity’s published figures are estimates, not guarantees, and they describe different parts of the process.

Transfer or activation case Xfinity’s stated estimate How to interpret it
Typical wireless number transfer About 10 minutes This is a usual estimate for the number-transfer step, not a promise that every activation will finish in that time.
Landline number transfer Three to five days Landline ports generally take longer than wireless ports.
Overall activation May take up to 10 business days Xfinity warns that activation timing varies, so a port that takes longer than the typical wireless estimate is not automatically a failure.

Check the transfer status in the Xfinity app or follow any status message from Xfinity or your former carrier. Keep the old line active until the status indicates completion and the new phone works. A short period in which the old phone still receives service is expected while the transfer is being finalized.

Test everything before wiping the old phone

Run this checklist after activation:

  • Place an outgoing call and call the number from another phone.
  • Send and receive SMS messages.
  • Test mobile data with Wi-Fi turned off.
  • Confirm the phone shows the expected Xfinity line and signal.
  • Open recent photos, contacts, messages and files on the new device.
  • Sign in to essential apps and complete any security verification.

Only after these checks pass should you factory-reset, trade in or recycle the old phone. Keep any required account-recovery information in a secure place. If the old phone still works, leave it powered on for a little longer in case an account or security app needs one more approval.

If the number is ported but the phone has no service

Xfinity’s first troubleshooting step is a restart. Power the phone off, wait briefly and turn it back on so it can register on the network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reinstall the eSIM

If restarting does not restore service and you use an eSIM, follow Xfinity’s activation instructions to reinstall the eSIM. Do not delete an eSIM profile casually unless the activation flow tells you to; removing the wrong profile can leave the phone without a usable line until it is downloaded again.

Reset network settings as a last step

If the eSIM reinstall does not help, Xfinity describes resetting network settings. This is not the same as a full factory reset, but it removes saved Wi-Fi networks, VPN configurations and other custom network settings. Record Wi-Fi passwords and any VPN details first, then reconnect and re-enter them after the reset.

When to contact support

Contact Xfinity if the app shows an incomplete or failed transfer, the old carrier still shows the line as active after the expected window, or calls, texts and data remain unavailable after the restart and activation steps. Have the transfer status, phone model, SIM or eSIM type and the old-carrier account details available, but do not share a port PIN publicly.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Numbers and devices that cannot use this process

Xfinity says toll-free and pager numbers are excluded from its mobile-number transfers. It also says a number cannot be transferred to a tablet or smartwatch. A compatible phone is therefore required for the standard mobile port, even if the number will later be used with another connected device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compatibility also matters for eSIM quick transfer. If the phone model or software is unsupported, use the standard SIM or eSIM activation path instead of assuming a device-to-device transfer will appear.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Canceling first: Closing the old line before Xfinity completes the port can interrupt the request and risk losing the number.
  • Using the ordinary account PIN: The old carrier may issue a separate, temporary port-out PIN.
  • Entering a different account holder’s details: Use the name, address and identity information attached to the old account.
  • Assuming a port copies files: Number service and personal content use separate processes.
  • Erasing the old phone too soon: Keep it available until calls, texts, data and important files are verified.
  • Assuming quick transfer is universal: eSIM quick transfer works only on select, compatible devices and between the same device types documented by Xfinity.
  • Resetting networks without preparation: A network reset removes saved Wi-Fi, VPN and other custom network settings.

A complete switching checklist

  • Back up photos, contacts and other important data.
  • Keep the old carrier line active and retain the old phone.
  • Obtain the old carrier’s account number and port-out PIN.
  • Confirm the account-holder name, billing address and requested identity details.
  • Start the port in Xfinity activation or the Xfinity app.
  • Install the physical SIM or eSIM and complete activation.
  • Use the new phone’s setup flow to copy or restore personal content.
  • Test calls, texts, mobile data and important files.
  • Resolve any eSIM or network issue before erasing the old phone.
  • Cancel or close the former carrier account only after the port is complete and you have checked the final billing requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep my current phone number when switching to Xfinity Mobile?

Xfinity says you can keep an eligible number by starting the transfer before canceling the old service. Keep the old line active until Xfinity confirms the port and the new phone is working.

What information do I need to port my number?

Have the number being moved, the old carrier’s account number, account-holder name, billing address, requested last four Social Security digits and the carrier’s transfer or port-out PIN. The port PIN may differ from your normal account PIN.

Will porting my number move my photos and contacts?

No. Porting moves the number and mobile service only. Back up photos and other data to a cloud account, then use the new phone’s setup flow to copy or restore content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long does an Xfinity Mobile number transfer take?

Xfinity gives about 10 minutes as a typical wireless-transfer estimate, three to five days for a landline transfer and up to 10 business days as a possible activation duration. These are estimates, not guarantees.

Can I cancel my old carrier as soon as I submit the port?

No. Leave the old account and line active until the transfer is complete. Canceling early can stop the port and put the number at risk.

Does Xfinity support eSIM transfer between phones?

Quick eSIM transfer is available only on select compatible hardware and software. Xfinity documents same-type moves such as iPhone to iPhone and Android to Android. Otherwise, use the standard eSIM or physical-SIM activation process.

What should I do if the number is ported but the phone has no service?

Restart the phone first. If service does not return, Xfinity suggests reinstalling the eSIM and then resetting network settings. A network reset removes saved Wi-Fi, VPN and other custom network settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I transfer a toll-free or pager number, or move a number to a tablet?

Xfinity excludes toll-free and pager numbers from these transfers and says a number cannot be transferred to a tablet or smartwatch.

When can I erase or trade in my old phone?

Wait until the new phone can place and receive calls, send and receive texts, use mobile data, and display your important photos, contacts and files. Keep recovery information available before resetting the old device.

The Bottom Line

Port the number first while the old line is still active, using the old carrier’s exact account details and transfer PIN. Activate the Xfinity SIM or eSIM, then separately restore your photos and other personal content through the new phone’s setup process.

Because Xfinity’s timing estimates can vary, do not wipe the old phone or close the former account until the transfer is confirmed and you have tested calls, texts, mobile data and essential files.
