Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteSwitching to AT&T involves two separate jobs: porting your existing phone number and copying your personal content to the new device. Start the number transfer through AT&T’s activation process, using the account details and transfer code required by your current carrier. Keep the old line active until activation finishes. Then move contacts, photos, messages and other content with the method suited to your old and new phones.
If you are bringing a phone purchased elsewhere, it must be unlocked and compatible with AT&T’s network. Check that before you begin, and do not erase or cancel the old phone until you have verified both service and data on the AT&T device.

What to prepare before switching
Number portability and content migration depend on different information. Assemble the following before ordering or activating service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesInformation for the number transfer
- The name exactly as it appears on the current mobile account.
- The current carrier account number.
- A number-transfer PIN, account PIN or account code if the existing carrier requires one.
- The mobile number you want to move and any other details requested by the current carrier.
AT&T lists the name on the current plan, account number and any applicable transfer PIN or account code on its number-transfer page. Requirements vary by carrier, so obtain the code from the current provider rather than guessing.

Information and equipment for data migration
- Both phones, with enough battery power to remain on during the copy.
- A reliable Wi-Fi connection. AT&T recommends Wi-Fi before transferring content.
- The Apple ID or Google account credentials used on the old phone, when a cloud backup or sign-in method is involved.
- A USB cable or computer only if your chosen transfer method supports or needs one.
- The old phone left intact until you have checked the new phone.
Content-transfer instructions do not promise that every app, account, setting or data type will move automatically. Confirm that important information is backed up and that you can sign in again before wiping the old device.
Check the phone you plan to use
A phone bought from another seller can be used on AT&T only when it is unlocked and compatible with AT&T’s wireless network. Compatibility is model-specific; use the current eligibility and compatibility checks in AT&T’s device-activation guidance instead of assuming that every unlocked phone works. If the phone is locked to another carrier, resolve that restriction with the seller or current carrier before activation.
Transfer your number to AT&T
Port the number before cancelling the old service. The old line must remain active so the current carrier can authorize the transfer and so you can receive any required verification.

- Check eligibility. Confirm with AT&T that the number can be transferred and check your current carrier’s porting rules. Eligibility can depend on the type of number, service area and account status.
- Collect the exact account details. Record the current account name, account number and transfer PIN or account code, including capitalization or formatting where relevant. A mismatch can delay or reject the request.
- Start AT&T activation. Use AT&T’s activation flow for a number coming from another provider. Follow the prompts for bringing your number and enter the requested information before turning on or setting up the phone.
- Keep the old service active. Do not ask the current carrier to cancel the line while the request is pending. AT&T’s Prepaid instructions specifically warn against cancelling before activation; the same precaution avoids losing the number while a transfer is being processed.
- Wait for the transfer to complete. Continue using the old phone if it still works. The old service may remain active until the port finishes, and temporary differences between voice, text and data availability can occur during the changeover.
- Test the AT&T line. Place an outgoing call, make a test call to the number, send and receive a text, and test mobile data. Confirm that the displayed caller ID and voicemail are associated with the transferred number.
AT&T’s general instructions are on Keep & Transfer Your Phone Number to a New Phone with AT&T. The activation page also distinguishes a number being transferred from another provider from a new AT&T number; select the transfer option rather than starting as a brand-new line.

How long number transfers take
Porting time is an estimate, not a guarantee. The route you use, the type of number and the accuracy of the account information can change the result.
| Situation | AT&T estimate | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Wireless number added to an AT&T account | One to five days | Estimate on AT&T’s device-add page, last updated June 3, 2025; the actual request and carrier can affect completion. |
| Non-wireless number added to an AT&T account | Five to seven days | Estimate on the same June 3, 2025 page; it is not a promise of completion on a particular day. |
| AT&T Prepaid transfer started in a store | One to three business hours | Process-specific estimate in an AT&T Prepaid article last updated August 23, 2023. |
| AT&T Prepaid transfer started online or by phone | Up to three to five business days | Process-specific estimate in the August 23, 2023 Prepaid article. |
| Non-wireless number in the AT&T Prepaid process | At least five to seven business days | Older Prepaid guidance; non-wireless transfers can take longer than a wireless port. |
Because these estimates come from different AT&T pages and processes, do not combine them into one universal deadline. If the transfer exceeds the estimate, recheck the account number, account name and transfer PIN with the current carrier, then contact AT&T while keeping the old line active.

iPhone to iPhone: use Quick Start
- Connect both iPhones to power or make sure they have enough charge, and connect them to Wi-Fi.
- Update both devices to the latest iOS version available for them before beginning, as AT&T advises.
- Turn on the new iPhone and place it beside the old iPhone.
- Use Apple Quick Start when it appears, authenticate with the Apple ID used on the old phone and choose the transfer option shown on screen.
- Leave both phones together and connected to power until the transfer and setup finish.
- Open Contacts, Photos and Messages on the new iPhone and check recent and older items before erasing the old phone.
Quick Start is the AT&T-recommended path for an iPhone-to-iPhone move. Apple’s setup screens can differ by iOS release, so follow the prompts shown on the devices rather than relying on a fixed button name.

Android: restore from Google backup
- On the old Android phone, verify that the Google account contains a current backup and that important photos are synchronized or otherwise copied.
- Connect the new Android phone to Wi-Fi during setup.
- Sign in with the same Google account when prompted, or select the restore-from-backup option.
- Choose the available backup and allow contacts and other supported content to restore.
- Open the relevant apps and wait for cloud content to finish downloading before judging the move complete.
Google restoration depends on what was backed up and on each app’s own account and backup behavior. AT&T’s page does not state that every app, message history, setting or account will transfer, so check those items individually.
Samsung Galaxy: use Smart Switch
Samsung Smart Switch provides more connection choices than a cloud-only restore. The Galaxy S23 FE guide hosted by AT&T describes transfers over USB cable, Wi-Fi or a computer and lists contacts, photos, music, videos, messages, notes, calendars and more as transferable categories. The exact menu names and supported items can differ by Galaxy model and software version.
- Install or open Smart Switch on the old and new Galaxy phones, or use the computer version if that is your chosen route.
- Choose which phone is sending and which is receiving, then select the connection method offered by both devices.
- For a cable transfer, connect the phones with a compatible USB cable; a cable is optional when you use Wi-Fi or a computer.
- Review the categories Smart Switch finds, including contacts, photos, messages, notes, calendars, music and videos, and select what you want to copy.
- Start the transfer and keep the phones connected until Smart Switch reports completion.
- Check the new Galaxy’s contacts, gallery, messages, notes and calendar before resetting the old phone.
Read the device-specific instructions in the Samsung Galaxy S23 FE user guide hosted by AT&T if that is your model. It describes available Smart Switch paths but does not establish that every Galaxy generation exposes identical options.

AT&T describes Personal Cloud as a way to transfer contacts, photos and videos. The service is limited to select AT&T Prepaid plans, so verify eligibility in your plan details before depending on it. It is not a universal replacement for a complete device backup, especially when you also need messages, app data, notes or settings.

What to verify before wiping the old phone
A successful number port does not prove that personal content copied successfully. Perform a deliberate check while the old device is still available.
- Contacts: Search for several recent contacts and confirm that names, numbers and groups appear correctly.
- Photos and videos: Open older items as well as recent ones; cloud thumbnails can appear before the original files finish downloading.
- Messages: Check both recent conversations and any threads you must retain. Message availability varies by platform and backup method.
- Calendars and notes: Confirm that entries are present and attached to the intended account.
- Accounts: Open email, messaging, banking and authentication apps and sign in again where required. Keep recovery information available.
- Calls and texts: Test the transferred number on AT&T, including an incoming call, outgoing call, sent text and received text.
- Mobile data: Turn off Wi-Fi briefly and open a webpage or app to verify cellular data.
Only after these checks should you remove the old phone from your accounts or perform a factory reset. Preserve the old phone and its backup until you are satisfied that the new device contains what you need.
Common problems and how to fix them
The port is rejected or delayed
- Compare the submitted account name and account number character for character with the current carrier’s records.
- Confirm whether the carrier requires a separate number-transfer PIN or account code and obtain a fresh one if it has expired.
- Ensure the old line is still active and has not been cancelled or suspended.
- Check whether the number is wireless or non-wireless, because AT&T publishes different timing estimates for those categories.
- If the request remains unresolved, contact both carriers with the transfer request details; do not submit repeated conflicting requests without understanding which one is active.
The phone has no AT&T service after the port
- Complete the activation steps for the device rather than assuming that inserting or moving a SIM automatically finishes setup.
- Recheck that the phone is unlocked and compatible with AT&T.
- Restart the phone after AT&T confirms activation, then test calls, texts and data.
- If another carrier’s service still appears, contact that carrier about any remaining lock or account restriction.
Only part of the data appears
- Wait for cloud downloads and app restoration to finish on Wi-Fi.
- Sign in with the same Apple ID or Google account used on the old device.
- For Samsung phones, rerun Smart Switch and select categories that were skipped the first time.
- Look for data stored only inside an app or on a computer; the AT&T guidance does not guarantee automatic transfer for every app, account or setting.
- Use the old phone or an existing backup as the source for anything still missing, and do not erase it until recovery is complete.
Do not confuse switching to AT&T with porting away from AT&T
If you are moving an AT&T number to another provider, different instructions apply. AT&T’s Number Transfer PIN page says a consumer transfer PIN expires after four days and a business-account PIN after fourteen days, and it advises customers not to disconnect service first. Those rules concern outbound transfers from AT&T; they are not the instructions for bringing a number into AT&T. For an inbound move, use the current carrier’s transfer requirements together with AT&T’s activation flow.

After activation: a practical completion check
Your switch is complete when the AT&T line passes call, text and data tests and the new phone contains the content you need. Keep the old phone and its backup for a short verification period, then remove the old device from account-security settings and reset it only after confirming that no required information remains. If the number transfer or device compatibility result differs from the estimates and checks above, use the latest AT&T instructions and your current carrier’s support because procedures can change.
