Supported transfer paths—and the paths that do not work
Rockstar’s migration system is designed for an upgrade within the same console family. The supported routes are:

Rockstar’s January 29, 2025 transfer overview says players can migrate Story Mode and Online progress to either PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, while the detailed migration instructions updated February 24, 2026 describe the current menu flow. Menu wording can change, so use the live Rockstar Games Customer Support instructions if your screen differs.
What you need before starting
Migration is account-based. Prepare the source console profile and the destination console before opening GTA Online.

- The correct Rockstar Games account: the old-generation profile must be attached to the Rockstar Games account you will use on the new console. Signing in to a different account is the most common reason the expected character does not appear.
- The current-generation game: obtain and install the GTA V/GTA Online edition for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S. The destination edition is separate from the old-generation installation and must be available on the new console.
- Access to GTA Online: finish installation and updates, then launch the current-generation edition and enter GTA Online rather than only opening Story Mode.
- An eligible profile: Rockstar can reject suspended or banned accounts and profiles with illegitimate or insufficient progress.
- A migration decision: migration is one-time. Make sure you are ready to treat the destination generation as your active continuation before confirming.
How to migrate your GTA Online profile
- Verify the account on the old console. On the PS4 or Xbox One, confirm that the GTA Online profile you want is associated with the Rockstar Games account you intend to use on the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. The migration flow reads the profile through that account; it does not search every account on the console.
- Install the destination edition. Install the current-generation GTA V/GTA Online edition for PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, apply its updates, and sign in to the console account that can access the game.
- Open GTA Online on the new console. Start the current-generation edition and continue to the GTA Online Landing Page. If Rockstar detects an eligible profile, the page should present a migration option.
- Use the Landing Page prompt, or open the menu manually. If no migration prompt appears on the Landing Page, enter GTA Online, open the Pause Menu, choose Online, and select Migrate Profile.
- Select the source profile. Choose the PS4 or Xbox One profile shown by Rockstar. Check the displayed platform and character information carefully; do not confirm a profile you do not recognize.
- Read the warning and confirm. The confirmation screen explains that migration is one-time and that progress made independently on different console generations will not be synchronized afterward. Confirm only after accepting that limitation.
- Review the character screen. Before entering a session, inspect the resulting character and visible progress. Pay particular attention to your expected character, rank-related information, properties, vehicles and currency balances. Rockstar’s currency rules distinguish purchased GTA$ from GTA$ earned in play.
- Continue on the destination generation. Once the migration completes, use the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S profile as the active continuation. Avoid making important progress on both generations because those changes will become separate, unsynchronized progress.
What transfers, and how GTA$ are treated
Migration moves an eligible GTA Online profile within the supported console-family path, but you should not assume that every balance or user-created asset behaves identically in every situation.

The purchased-versus-earned distinction matters when checking your balance. If the amount on the destination console does not match your expectation, separate the GTA$ you bought from the GTA$ you earned before treating the result as an error. The profile migration cannot bypass Rockstar’s currency rules.
Why your profile may be ineligible
Rockstar does not guarantee migration for every account. The migration screen may reject a profile for several reasons:

- Suspension or ban: a suspended or banned account is not eligible to migrate.
- Illegitimate progress: Rockstar may block profiles whose progress is identified as illegitimate.
- Insufficient progress: a profile without enough qualifying progress may be rejected.
- Wrong account: if the destination console is signed in to a Rockstar Games account other than the one holding the old profile, the expected character will not be offered.
- Unsupported route: PS5-to-Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Series X|S-to-PS5 and console-to-PC moves are not supported, regardless of account linking.
An eligibility rejection is different from a missing menu. If Online > Migrate Profile is absent, first check the account, game edition and supported route. If Rockstar displays a specific rejection message, follow that message and the current Customer Support guidance rather than repeatedly confirming menus.
What “one-time migration” means in practice
The old-generation profile is not erased when you migrate. However, Rockstar’s warning is explicit: GTA Online progress made on different console generations will not be synced after migration.
For example, if you migrate a PS4 profile to PS5 and later earn money or buy a vehicle on PS4, that activity will not flow back to the migrated PS5 profile. The same rule applies to Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Treat the destination profile as the version you will continue playing, and keep the old console as an unsynchronized legacy copy.

This is also why you should finish any immediate old-generation activity you care about before confirming migration. Migration is not a continuously linked account state, and it is not a merge tool for reconciling two different sets of progress.

User-generated content has an additional caveat. Rockstar describes different behavior for same-family and cross-family moves:
- With a same-family upgrade, edits can remain shared between the related versions in the way Rockstar supports for that content.
- With a cross-family copy, later edits made on the old platform do not continue updating the copy on the new platform.
Because the supported character migration paths are same-family upgrades, most readers moving from PS4 to PS5 or Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S should still check the actual content after migration. A mission, rating or copy that appears on the destination should not be treated as an automatically synchronized master unless Rockstar’s current instructions explicitly say so.

GTA Online migration is separate from Story Mode saves
Do not confuse the GTA Online profile migration with Story Mode save transfer. Rockstar treats them as separate workflows, with separate-save behavior. Migrating your Online character does not by itself merge every Story Mode save into the destination installation.
If you need both, handle the Online migration first or separately from the Story Mode save process, then verify each result in its own mode. Preserve the original Story Mode save until you have confirmed that the destination save is present and usable. The exact Story Mode steps and available save options can depend on the edition and Rockstar’s current support flow, so use the current Rockstar Games Customer Support instructions for that part rather than assuming the Online menu controls it.

The Landing Page has no migration prompt
- Confirm that you launched the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S edition, not the old-generation edition installed on the destination console.
- Open the Pause Menu and check Online > Migrate Profile.
- Verify that the destination is a supported same-family route.
- Sign out of any incorrect Rockstar Games account and sign in to the account that owns the old profile.
- Install pending game updates, restart the game, and check the menu again.
The wrong character appears
Stop before confirming. The most likely cause is an account mismatch or an unexpected source profile. Check the Rockstar Games account identity and the platform profile shown on the migration screen. Do not proceed on the assumption that characters can be merged later.

The migration is rejected
Read the displayed reason. Suspensions, bans, illegitimate progress and insufficient progress are explicit eligibility barriers. A supported console path alone does not make an account eligible.
Your GTA$ balance looks different
Separate purchased GTA$ from earned GTA$. Purchased GTA$ are limited to the same console family, while earned GTA$ have the broader transfer rule described by Rockstar. Review the balance after migration and consult Rockstar Support if the result still conflicts with those rules.
You played on both generations after moving
Those sessions are not synchronized. Decide which generation is your active profile and continue there; do not expect later play on the other generation to reconcile automatically.
A practical pre-confirmation checklist
- Destination is PS5 for a PS4 profile, or Xbox Series X|S for an Xbox One profile.
- Current-generation GTA V/GTA Online edition is installed and updated.
- The destination is signed in to the Rockstar Games account holding the source profile.
- The character and source platform shown by Rockstar are the ones you intend to move.
- You understand that migration is one-time and that later progress will not sync between generations.
- You have distinguished purchased GTA$ from earned GTA$ when estimating the expected balance.
- You have separately planned any Story Mode save transfer.
- You have noted any user-created missions or ratings that need checking after migration.

Bottom line
Use Rockstar’s one-time migration on the new console, not a manual account copy: PS4 profiles move to PS5, and Xbox One profiles move to Xbox Series X|S. The same Rockstar Games account, the current-generation edition and an eligible profile are required. Purchased GTA$ follow the same-family rule, earned GTA$ have the broader transfer treatment, and any progress made independently on the two generations will remain unsynchronized. Handle Story Mode saves separately and verify user-created content after the move.
