Which transfer method should you use?
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a PS5 game, so its save must move through a PS5-supported method. PlayStation documents two valid routes: a direct transfer between consoles and cloud storage through a PlayStation Plus membership. The table below shows what each route requires.

A LAN cable is optional during direct transfer. If both PS5s normally use Wi-Fi, PlayStation says a wired connection can make the transfer faster, but both consoles may remain connected wirelessly to the same network.

Prepare the old and new PS5s
Doing these checks before opening the transfer tool prevents the most common mistakes: using different accounts, moving an older save, or interrupting the process while the consoles are writing data.
- Use the same PlayStation account. Sign in on the destination with the account that owns and created the Rebirth save. A different account will not expose that save as though it belonged to the new user.
- Update system software. On both consoles, install any pending PS5 system-software update before starting. PlayStation’s transfer procedure assumes current system software.
- Synchronize trophies on the source PS5. PlayStation recommends synchronizing trophy information before a console transfer. This is separate from the save file, but it should be completed while the old console is available.
- Decide which save is authoritative. If you can still use the old PS5, open Rebirth and make sure it contains the progress you want. For cloud transfer, check sync status or upload manually rather than assuming the newest local save is already online.
- Keep the source console powered on. The direct-transfer tool needs the old PS5 available during the operation. Do not put it into an automatic shutdown state while the transfer is running.
Method 1: transfer directly from one PS5 to another
Direct transfer is generally the most straightforward route when the old PS5 still works. It moves supported PS5 data, including PS5-game saved data, through the consoles’ network connection. The transfer is started from the destination PS5 after setup, although the option can also appear during initial setup.
Step 1: connect both consoles to the same network
Connect the source and destination PS5 to the same home network, either wirelessly or by LAN. A LAN cable between the consoles or through the same network equipment can improve speed when the consoles usually use Wi-Fi, but a cable is not mandatory. Do not place the consoles on separate networks or guest networks that prevent them from seeing each other.

Step 2: leave the source PS5 on
Sign in to the source with the account that contains the Rebirth save and leave that console powered on. Close unnecessary applications and avoid starting other transfers while the Data Transfer process is in progress.
Step 3: open Data Transfer on the destination
On the new PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer > Continue. Follow the on-screen prompts to identify the source console and select the data to move. If you have not completed the new console’s initial setup, PlayStation also offers Data Transfer during that setup flow.
Step 4: let the consoles complete the operation
Keep both PS5s on and connected. Do not unplug either console, change Wi-Fi or LAN settings, or run an internet connection test while the transfer is active. PlayStation warns that interrupting the process can damage or lose data. The destination PS5 may restart during the operation; that restart is part of the process, and some data can continue transferring afterward.

Step 5: check Rebirth on the new PS5
After the transfer finishes, make sure Rebirth is installed on the destination and launch it using the same account. Load the expected save and confirm the latest progress, characters, items, and playtime before wiping, selling, or resetting the old PS5. PlayStation describes this as a general PS5 transfer process rather than a Rebirth-specific save-merge procedure, so the game should simply present the transferred save that is available to that account.

Cloud storage is useful when the old PS5 is still reachable but a direct console transfer is inconvenient, or when the latest save was synchronized before the old console was replaced. It requires an active PlayStation Plus membership. The cloud route has two distinct actions: upload or synchronize on the source, then download to the destination.
Check whether the source save is synchronized
On the old PS5, open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5) > Sync Saved Data > View Sync Status. Find Rebirth and verify its synchronization state before relying on the cloud copy. This check matters because a save can exist locally while the cloud still contains an older version.
PS5 games can be configured to synchronize automatically when a game closes or when the console enters rest mode. Automatic updates and the rest-mode setting that keeps the PS5 connected to the internet must be enabled for that behavior. Automatic synchronization is not proof that the most recent session has uploaded, so check the status after closing Rebirth.
Manually upload the save when necessary
If the desired save is not in the cloud, use Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5) > Upload or Delete from Console Storage > Upload to Cloud Storage. Select Rebirth and upload the local PS5 save. Wait for the operation to finish before signing out of the old console or disconnecting it.
Download the save on the new PS5
Sign in to the destination with the same PlayStation account and open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5) > Download or Delete from Cloud Storage > Download to Console Storage. Select the Rebirth save stored in the cloud and download it to the new console. Then start the game and confirm that the expected progress is present.

Understand the cloud-storage limits
PlayStation lists cloud-storage capacity of 100 GB for PS5 saved data and 100 GB for PS4 saved data. It also lists a limit of 1,000 PS4 save files. These figures describe the service’s storage allowances, not the size of an individual Rebirth save; they do not change the requirement to use the PS5 save-data menus for this game.
How to choose between direct transfer and cloud download
Use direct transfer when both consoles are in front of you, the old PS5 is functioning, and you want the destination to receive the supported data in one operation. It does not require PlayStation Plus. Cloud storage is the better route when the old console has already synchronized the save, when you cannot place both consoles on the same network, or when you prefer to upload and download separately. It does require PlayStation Plus.
A LAN cable only affects the network connection used by direct transfer. It is not a third transfer method, and it is not required for cloud storage. A USB flash drive, USB hard drive, or USB extended-storage disk should not be substituted for either supported route.

Why a USB drive cannot move the Rebirth save
PlayStation’s support guidance is explicit: “You can’t copy PS5 saved data from your PS5 console to a USB drive.” That rule applies to Rebirth because Rebirth uses PS5 saved data. The USB procedures that allow save copying describe PS4 game saves, which are a different format and platform case.
Copying the game installation to USB extended storage also does not copy its PS5 save. You must use Data Transfer or PlayStation Plus cloud storage. If the old PS5 is unavailable and the save was never synchronized, the documented methods do not provide a USB-based recovery path.
Troubleshooting transfer problems
The destination cannot find the old PS5
- Confirm both consoles are signed in with the account intended for the transfer.
- Check that both are connected to the same network rather than separate Wi-Fi or guest networks.
- Install pending system-software updates, then reopen Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer on the destination.
- Keep the source PS5 powered on and nearby while the destination searches.
- If both consoles normally use Wi-Fi, connect them through LAN to improve the connection and try again.
The cloud download contains older progress
Return to the source PS5, close Rebirth, and inspect Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5) > Sync Saved Data > View Sync Status. If the desired local save is newer, upload it manually through Upload or Delete from Console Storage > Upload to Cloud Storage, then download again on the destination. Do not assume that a cloud entry is the newest local version.

The transfer was interrupted
PlayStation warns against turning off either console, changing network settings, or running connection tests during transfer because data can be damaged or lost. If an interruption occurs, do not immediately erase the source console. Restart the consoles only after they are stable, reopen the Data Transfer process on the destination, and follow the prompts again. PlayStation does not publish a Rebirth-specific repair or save-merge procedure for a partially interrupted operation, so preserve the original source until the destination has been checked.
Rebirth starts without the expected save
- Verify that the destination is using the same PlayStation account as the source.
- Confirm that the PS5 save was actually transferred or downloaded, rather than only the game application.
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5) on the destination and check for Rebirth saved data.
- Close and relaunch the game after the download or transfer completes.
- Keep the source console untouched until you have loaded the expected save successfully.
If two different Rebirth versions exist, the official instructions explain how to transfer, upload, and download saved data but do not describe an in-game merge procedure. Choose the source version deliberately before uploading or transferring, and do not expect the game to combine separate campaigns.

No. A Final Fantasy VII Remake save is not a Rebirth campaign save and cannot be loaded as one. PlayStation’s Rebirth guide explains that, although Rebirth continues Remake’s story, the save files do not transfer between the games.
Existing Remake save data can unlock special bonuses in Rebirth, including exclusive summoning materia. Those bonuses are not a continuation of the old campaign: levels, abilities, equipment progress, and other gameplay progression do not carry over. This distinction is separate from moving a Rebirth save from one PS5 to another.
Final verification checklist
- Sign in to the destination with the same PlayStation account used on the source.
- Install Rebirth on the new PS5 if it is not already installed.
- Open the PS5 saved-data settings and confirm Rebirth data exists locally.
- Launch the game and load the expected save.
- Check a recognizable progress point, such as the latest chapter, party state, or recent manual save.
- Only after verification should you reset, sell, or give away the old PS5.

Can I transfer the save without PlayStation Plus?
Yes. Direct PS5-to-PS5 Data Transfer does not require PlayStation Plus. You need both consoles, the same PlayStation account, current system software, and a shared network. PlayStation Plus is required for the separate cloud-storage route.
Can I transfer only Rebirth’s save?
The Data Transfer utility is a general PS5 migration tool, and PlayStation describes it as transferring supported data rather than offering a Rebirth-only export file. Follow the destination’s prompts and verify the save afterward. Cloud storage lets you select Rebirth’s PS5 save for upload or download through the saved-data menus.
What if I already sold or lost the old PS5?
Check whether Rebirth had synchronized to PlayStation Plus cloud storage. If it did, sign in on the replacement console and download the cloud save. If the save was never synchronized and the old console is unavailable, PlayStation’s documented options do not include copying a PS5 save from USB.
Does installing Rebirth on the new console restore progress?
No. Installing the game application and moving saved data are separate operations. Reinstall Rebirth if necessary, then complete Data Transfer or download the PS5 save from cloud storage before launching the game.
Can two Rebirth saves be merged?
Do not expect a merge. The official instructions cover transferring, uploading, and downloading saved data but do not describe a Rebirth-specific method for combining two different campaigns. Select the correct local or cloud version and preserve the source console until you have verified it.
How much cloud space does this require?
PlayStation lists 100 GB of cloud capacity for PS5 saved data and another 100 GB for PS4 saved data. Those are service allowances, not the size of a Rebirth save, and they do not make USB copying available.
