There is no single universally best route for every OnePlus. A working pair of phones gives you the most choices. If the OnePlus is already set up, look for a post-setup copy option before erasing anything; the exact menu and its availability depend on the manufacturer and Android version.

Prepare both phones before copying
Protect the old phone
- Charge both phones. A transfer can last from a few minutes to over an hour depending on the amount of data, so begin with enough battery for the entire operation.
- Unlock the old Android and confirm that its screen lock, PIN, or password works. You may need to approve pairing or USB access repeatedly.
- Connect both devices to a reliable Wi-Fi network. Wi-Fi is required for many setup and backup steps even when the actual file copy uses a cable.
- Back up the old phone before you start. A direct copy is not a substitute for a recoverable backup.
- Install pending system or app updates only if they are offered normally and you have time to restart. Do not factory-reset the old phone until the OnePlus has been checked.
Gather the right connection hardware
For a wired Android setup transfer, use a cable that carries data and has connectors for both phones. You may need an adapter when the plugs differ. A charging-only cable can power a phone without allowing the copy to work. If the phones cannot establish a wired connection, use the wireless setup route or Clone Phone instead.
Make a short inventory
Write down services that need a fresh sign-in or a separate export: banking and authentication apps, work profiles, password managers, messaging services with their own backup systems, and accounts that are not Google accounts. Also note any files stored on a removable card or in an app-specific folder. This list gives you a verification checklist after migration.
Use OnePlus Clone Phone for a direct phone-to-phone move
The documented Nord N300 5G manual uses the following flow. Other OnePlus models may show different wording or a newer Clone Phone version, so follow the labels on your new phone if they differ.

- On the new OnePlus, open Clone Phone.
- Choose I’m a new phone.
- Select the type of your old phone, choosing the Android option when prompted.
- Follow the on-screen prompts. If the old phone does not already have Clone Phone, install it using the method shown on the OnePlus.
- Continue on the OnePlus until it displays a pairing QR code.
- On the old Android, open Clone Phone and choose I’m an old phone.
- Use the old phone to scan the QR code shown on the OnePlus. Allow the requested local-network, camera, file, or device permissions so the phones can communicate.
- When the connection is established, review the available categories and select only what you want to move.
- Start the transfer and leave both phones close together, unlocked when requested, and connected until the completion message appears.
Clone Phone can present categories such as contacts, call history, messages, photos, audio, videos, notes, apps, downloads, and documents. The exact list depends on the source phone, OnePlus model, Android release, and app version. Selecting fewer categories can reduce the amount of data to review, but it does not make unsupported app data portable.
If the app name or screens do not match
OnePlus has changed migration-app branding and interface details over time. Do not install an old package solely because a guide uses a different name. Start from the Clone Phone entry on the new OnePlus and use the current prompts it supplies. If the new phone does not offer Clone Phone, use Android setup transfer or Google backup restore.

Transfer during Android setup by cable
Android’s setup flow can copy data from an old phone while you configure the OnePlus. Google recommends a cable when one is available because it avoids some wireless pairing issues, but the prompts and supported categories are device-dependent.
- Turn on the new OnePlus and begin setup.
- When setup asks whether you want to copy apps and data, choose the option to copy from an old Android phone.
- Connect the phones with a data-capable cable. Add the required adapter if the connectors do not match.
- Unlock the old phone and approve any prompt asking to trust the connection or allow access.
- Review the categories presented by setup, then select the data you want to copy.
- Keep the cable connected and follow the progress indicators until setup reports that copying is complete.
If the cable route is unavailable, do not force a loose connector or use a cable that only charges. Disconnect safely and choose the wireless option offered by setup.
Transfer during Android setup wirelessly
Wireless setup uses the phones’ local connection rather than a physical cable. It is useful when the connectors differ or no suitable data cable is available, although the exact pairing screens vary by OnePlus and Android version.
- Start setup on the new OnePlus and select the option to copy apps and data from an old Android phone.
- Choose the wireless method when it is offered.
- On the old phone, follow the pairing instructions shown on the OnePlus. The flow may use a QR code, a confirmation prompt, or a pairing code.
- Confirm that the accounts and devices shown belong to you.
- Select the categories to copy and start the transfer.
- Keep both phones near one another, powered on, and on the same local connection until the copy finishes.
Wireless transfer does not remove the need for a backup. It also does not make app data from unsupported apps, non-Google accounts, or service-specific content appear automatically.
Restore a Google backup when direct copying is not possible
Use backup restore when the old phone is lost, damaged, unavailable during setup, or unable to pair. This route requires access to the Google Account used for the old phone’s backup.

- On the OnePlus setup screen, choose the option to restore or copy from a backup when it appears.
- Sign in with the same Google Account used on the old Android.
- Select the relevant device backup and review the categories or apps that setup offers to restore.
- Accept the restore and keep the OnePlus connected to Wi-Fi while apps and cloud data download.
- Open important apps after setup and complete any sign-in, verification, or in-app restore process they require.
Google states that backup and restore capabilities vary by device and Android version. A backup created on a higher Android version cannot be restored to a phone running a lower Android version; that version mismatch can produce an incomplete transfer. Check the Android versions on both phones before relying on cloud restore.

Commonly offered categories
Depending on the route and device, OnePlus and Android setup may offer contacts, call history, text messages, photos, videos, audio, notes, downloads, documents, and some apps. A category appearing in the selection screen means the current software can attempt that category; it is not a guarantee that every item inside every app will be recreated.
Content that may not copy
- App data from apps that do not use Android backup.
- Data belonging to non-Google accounts and services that synchronize outside the Android backup system.
- Contacts and calendars synchronized to another provider rather than stored in the Google Account or on the phone.
- Ringtones and some customized settings.
- Files held inside an app’s private storage or protected work profile.
- Some account credentials, security keys, and device-specific permissions.
For these items, use the app’s own export, backup, or account-transfer feature. Sign in to each critical service on the OnePlus and verify that recent content is present before retiring the old phone.
Verify the OnePlus before erasing the old phone
Verification catches the gaps that a completion message cannot show. Work through this list while the old phone is still available:
- Call a known number and confirm that the expected contacts and call history are present.
- Open the messaging app and check recent conversations, attachments, and any conversation-specific backup setting.
- Browse photos and videos by date, including items stored in device folders rather than a cloud gallery.
- Open downloads, documents, audio files, notes, and recordings that you need for work or personal use.
- Launch banking, authentication, work, password-manager, and messaging apps. Complete their security checks instead of assuming an app copy includes its data.
- Check calendars and contacts supplied by non-Google accounts.
- Confirm that the SIM or eSIM, mobile number, Bluetooth accessories, and notification permissions work as expected; these device and carrier settings are not guaranteed to be transferred.
- Compare the old phone’s storage categories with the OnePlus if a large folder appears to be missing.
Keep the old phone charged and untouched until this inspection is complete and any separate exports or sign-ins have succeeded.

Troubleshoot a failed or incomplete transfer
The cable shows an error or does nothing
- Disconnect and reconnect both ends firmly.
- Try another known data-capable cable.
- Check that the adapter is attached on the correct side and supports data, not only charging.
- Inspect the old phone’s charging port for lint or damage without forcing anything into it.
- Unlock the old phone and look for a USB permission or connection-mode prompt.
- If the cable route still fails, restart setup with the wireless method or use Clone Phone.
The QR code will not scan
Increase the screen brightness, clean the old phone’s camera lens, and hold the devices steady at the distance shown on screen. If Android setup offers a pairing-code alternative, use that instead of QR scanning. When direct pairing was skipped, setup may offer a cloud-backup restore route.
The copy stopped after a low-battery warning or disconnect
Recharge both phones, reconnect them to a stable network or cable, and restart the transfer. Do not erase partial files until you know which categories completed. After setup, some devices expose a Finish setting up prompt or another copy-data option, but the menu and its availability vary by manufacturer and Android version.
The progress appears stuck
Google’s troubleshooting guidance says to stop a copy that remains stuck for more than 15 minutes and check what completed. Treat 15 minutes as Google’s published troubleshooting instruction, not as a universal time limit: a large photo or video library can legitimately take much longer. After stopping, retry with fewer categories, a different connection route, or a backup restore.
Apps are present but their data is missing
This usually means the app does not use Android backup or requires its own account restore. Open the app on the old phone, look for an export or backup command, and follow the service’s transfer instructions. If the old phone is already gone, contact the app provider; reinstalling the app alone cannot recreate data that was never included in the device backup.
A practical decision path
- Both phones work and the OnePlus shows Clone Phone: use Clone Phone when you want to select local categories directly.
- Both phones are together and the OnePlus is still in setup: use Android setup transfer, preferring a compatible data cable when available.
- The phones cannot pair, or the old phone is unavailable: choose Google backup restore with the same Google Account.
- The direct transfer is incomplete: verify which categories arrived, then retry only the missing categories or restore supported cloud data.
- The Android versions differ: check that the destination is not running an older version than the source before depending on backup restore.
The exact screens, app names, supported categories, and post-setup recovery options are controlled by the OnePlus model, Android version, and software release. Follow the current prompts on your device and treat the old phone as the source of truth until your verification checklist is complete.

Can I transfer data if I no longer have the old Android phone?
Only data present in a usable Google Account backup or another service backup can be restored. A direct Clone Phone or cable transfer requires the old phone to be available and unlockable.
