On the iPhone, open Transfer Your Apps & Data, choose From Android, select Transfer with App, then enter the code shown in Move to iOS on your Android phone. A direct USB-C data connection is usually faster and more reliable than Wi-Fi; wireless transfer works when both phones are charged and close together. Do not erase the Android phone until you have checked your photos, messages, files, accounts and app sign-ins on the iPhone.
Move to iOS can bring over contacts, SMS and message history, camera photos and videos, albums, files, folders, accessibility and display settings, web bookmarks, mail accounts, WhatsApp messages and media, Voice Memos, call history and calendars. Android app binaries are not copied. Compatible free apps may be matched to App Store versions, while other apps must be downloaded manually and signed into again.

What you need before starting
The automated migration is designed for an iPhone 18 Pro Max that is still at its initial setup screens. Prepare both phones before opening the transfer tool.

- Install or update Move to iOS on Android. Update Chrome as well if browser bookmarks matter.
- Check that the Android content you intend to move, including anything stored on a microSD card, will fit in the iPhone’s available storage.
- Have a USB-C data cable ready if you want a wired transfer. A USB-C cable is not automatically a data cable; it must support data transfer and have connectors that fit both phones.
- Keep both devices powered, unlocked as required by the prompts and on their transfer screens. Do not open another Android app or answer a call while the migration is running.
- Make sure you know the passwords for your Google, email, social, banking and other accounts. Data can move without transferring an account’s credentials.
If the iPhone has already been set up, the automated Move to iOS flow requires erasing the iPhone and starting setup again. If you cannot erase it, use Apple’s manual-transfer approach instead and move categories individually.

Choose a transfer method

Use Move to iOS during iPhone setup
1. Start the iPhone setup
- Turn on the new iPhone 18 Pro Max and follow setup until the Transfer Your Apps & Data screen appears.
- Tap From Android.
- On the next choice, tap Transfer with App. If your devices support the no-app route, you can select Transfer without App instead; that process is described below.
2. Prepare Move to iOS on Android
- Open Move to iOS on the Android phone and accept its prompts, including the permissions needed to read the content you selected.
- Tap through the setup until the app asks for the code from the iPhone.
- Enter the six- or ten-digit code displayed on the iPhone. The Android phone then joins the iPhone’s temporary Wi-Fi network.
3. Select content and let the transfer finish
- Review the categories shown by Move to iOS and select what you want to transfer. Include microSD-card content if it is offered and you have enough iPhone storage.
- Tap the control to begin. Keep the phones close together, connected to power and on their transfer screens.
- Do not switch apps, answer a call or allow either phone to lose power. Wait until the progress bar on the iPhone completes, even if the Android phone appears finished first.
- Continue the remaining iPhone setup only after the transfer screen says it is complete.
The transfer can include a large amount of media and may take an extended period. There is no universal completion time because it depends on the amount of selected content and the connection.
Use a USB-C cable for a direct transfer
A wired route uses the same Move to iOS workflow but sends the data through a direct USB-C connection. Connect the phones with a USB-C data cable before or when Move to iOS asks how to connect them, then follow the on-screen prompts. The iPhone still displays the code and the Android phone still uses Move to iOS to choose content.
Use a cable specifically rated for data, not one sold only for charging. Keep the cable connected until the iPhone reports completion. If the phones disconnect, stop and restart the migration rather than assuming that the remaining categories completed. The direct connection is the better choice when you have a suitable cable because Apple identifies it as faster and Google describes the cord as more reliable than Wi-Fi.

Use the no-app QR-code option when eligible
Apple’s current support instructions include a no-app route for compatible Android 17-or-later phones and iOS 26.5-compatible devices. Eligibility is decided by the Android manufacturer, so an Android version number alone does not guarantee that the option will appear.

- On the iPhone’s Transfer Your Apps & Data screen, choose From Android, then choose Transfer without App if it is offered.
- The iPhone displays a QR code. Use the Android camera or QR scanner to scan it.
- Follow the Android prompts to select the data to move. If offered, choose whether to transfer the eSIM as part of the process.
- Keep both phones powered and near each other until the iPhone confirms completion.
If Transfer without App does not appear, use the Move to iOS app or a manual transfer. Do not install an unofficial migration utility in place of Apple’s setup option.
What Move to iOS transfers
Apple’s supported categories cover personal information, communication history and many device settings. The exact items offered can vary with the Android phone and the content present on it.

What requires manual work
Music, books and PDFs
Apple says music, books and PDFs need to be moved manually. Copy music and documents from the Android storage or the service that owns them, then place them in an iPhone-compatible app or sync service. A file that merely exists on the Android phone will not automatically become part of the iPhone’s media library.
Android applications
Android applications are not copied as Android binaries. Move to iOS may identify some free apps when an equivalent version exists in both Google Play and the App Store and the developer supports Apple’s transfer feature. After setup, matched apps are downloaded from the App Store; other apps must be found there manually. Open each important app and sign in again. App-specific data is controlled by the app and its account, so a successful app download does not prove that its internal data moved.

Paid apps and subscriptions
The migration does not turn an Android purchase into an iOS purchase. Look up the iOS version in the App Store and use the account or subscription process provided by that service. Keep the Android phone available until you have confirmed access to any paid service you need.
WhatsApp: preserve chats and media
WhatsApp messages and media are among the categories Move to iOS supports. Select WhatsApp content when the Android transfer list appears, then complete WhatsApp’s setup on the iPhone with the same phone number. Follow any import prompt shown by WhatsApp and allow time for the imported media to appear.
Check both recent and older conversations, group memberships, attachments and starred or otherwise important messages before wiping Android. If a conversation or attachment is missing, keep the Android copy intact and resolve the issue before trying another migration.

Android users who already keep their library in Google Photos or Google Calendar do not have to abandon those services. Google advises un-checking Apple Photos or Apple Calendar during the transfer if you prefer to continue using Google’s apps. Install or open the Google app on the iPhone and sign in so the existing cloud library remains available.

If you want Apple’s built-in Photos or Calendar apps instead, leave the relevant categories selected and verify the result after setup. Choose one primary library for future edits to avoid creating separate copies and conflicting changes.

During migration, the iPhone may offer to activate your phone number and transfer a physical SIM or eSIM. In some cases, the setup screen sends you to your carrier’s website or another carrier-specific flow. Follow the instructions shown for your country and carrier; support and eligibility differ by location and network.
After activation, test a call, an SMS message and cellular data. Do not cancel the Android line or erase its eSIM until the iPhone can receive the verification messages used by your important accounts. Apple says its stores can help with data transfer and keeping the number if you need in-person assistance.
If the iPhone was already set up
Move to iOS works as part of the initial iPhone setup, not as a later add-on inside a normally configured iPhone. To use the automated migration after setup, erase the iPhone and run setup again; this removes content currently on the iPhone, so back up anything you need first. If erasing is not acceptable, transfer contacts, photos, files, calendars, mail and other categories separately using their existing cloud accounts or a computer, and install iOS apps manually.

Troubleshoot a stalled or incomplete transfer
The progress bar stops
- Keep Move to iOS visible on Android and do not switch to another app.
- Turn off cellular data on Android during the transfer.
- Disable network-optimization features that may switch away from the iPhone’s temporary Wi-Fi network.
- Forget saved Wi-Fi networks that could pull Android away from the temporary connection.
- Restart both phones and begin the transfer again. Use the USB-C route if you have a compatible data cable.
Only part of the content arrives
Check the iPhone’s available storage against the size of the selected Android content, including microSD-card files. If the iPhone becomes full or only a portion arrives, erase the iPhone and run the migration again with enough free space. Selecting fewer categories can help you identify which content is consuming the capacity.
The code or connection fails
Confirm that you started from Transfer Your Apps & Data and selected From Android, then request a new code by restarting the setup sequence. Keep the phones close, remove conflicting saved Wi-Fi networks and retry with cellular data disabled. For a wired retry, replace any cable that charges but does not carry data.
An app or account is missing
Search the App Store for the iOS version, install it and sign in with the original service account. Recheck the Android phone for account-specific data before erasing it. A missing app icon does not necessarily mean the underlying cloud data is lost; it may simply require an iOS download and login.

Use this final checklist while the Android phone is still available:
- Contacts: search for several names and check phone numbers and email addresses.
- Messages: open recent and older SMS conversations.
- Photos and videos: inspect different dates, albums and several videos.
- Files: open important documents from the Files app, including files that were on the microSD card.
- WhatsApp: check chats, groups and media.
- Mail and calendars: confirm synchronization and inspect future appointments.
- Voice Memos and call history: play recordings and review recent calls.
- Apps: install the iOS versions, sign in and verify critical data inside each one.
- Phone service: place a call, send an SMS and test cellular data on the iPhone.
- Accounts: confirm that password managers, authenticators and recovery methods are available before retiring the Android phone.
Only after these checks pass should you back up and wipe the Android phone. Keeping the original device untouched until verification is the simplest protection against an irreversible loss.
