How to transfer your Call of Duty settings and controller layout between games

Call of Duty HQ does not move every setting as one universal profile. It automatically imports settings stored in its shared, Call of Duty-level layer, while settings managed inside an individual game must be checked and often recreated manually. To move a setup safely, open the new game through Call of Duty HQ, confirm the shared settings, compare the destination title’s controller options with the old game, then test the result in each mode you play.

This process applies when moving between games such as Modern Warfare III and Black Ops 6, setting up Black Ops 7, or comparing a Black Ops title with Warzone. The exact menu wording can change by game, platform and patch, and the official documentation does not define one universal import button.

How Call of Duty settings are divided

The most important distinction is whether a setting belongs to Call of Duty HQ’s shared layer or to a particular game. The launch documentation for the HQ interface says shared settings are automatically imported from the previous title. It also says that settings managed at an individual title level are not automatically imported from earlier games.

Setting layer Transfer behavior What you should do
Shared Call of Duty settings Automatically imported from the previous title when the setting is part of the shared settings bucket. Open the destination game and confirm the values before playing.
Individual title settings Not automatically imported from prior games. Compare the old values with the destination title and recreate them manually where the options exist.

The split explains why one player may see familiar menu preferences after installing a new title but still find that the controller feels wrong. The shared layer can carry over while a title-specific controller layout, gameplay behavior or option added for a new mechanic remains at its default.

There is no single guarantee that every option with a similar name is equivalent between games. A setting can exist in both titles but use a different scale, timing choice or behavior. Treat an automatic import as a starting point, not proof that the two games now have identical input behavior.

Before switching games: record the setup that feels right

Make a reference copy before you leave the old title. A short phone video or a set of screenshots is usually faster than trying to remember values after the new game opens. Capture the complete controller page rather than only the button layout.

  • Controller layout preset and every custom button mapping.
  • Horizontal and vertical stick sensitivity.
  • ADS sensitivity, including any separate low-zoom or high-zoom values.
  • ADS timing choices and the point at which sensitivity changes while aiming.
  • Stick response curve and dead-zone values, if the title exposes them.
  • Aim-assist selections and any target-assist behavior exposed by the game.
  • Movement options, sprint behavior, crouch or slide inputs, and other mechanics that affect how a button press is interpreted.
  • Any title-specific options used for a mode such as Zombies, Campaign or Warzone.

Use the old game’s own labels in your notes. “Sensitivity 6” in one title is not necessarily perceptually identical to “Sensitivity 6” in another, and a familiar preset name can hide different individual bindings.

Step-by-step: move your settings to a new Call of Duty game

1. Open the destination title through Call of Duty HQ

Start the new game from Call of Duty HQ rather than assuming that the old game’s local settings screen controls the new title. HQ is the layer that manages the cross-title experience. If you still need the previous game, the official launch documentation says Modern Warfare III can be opened from the All Games tab or the Last Played tile when that is the content you used most recently.

Allow the destination title to finish any first-run setup and updates. A patch can add, rename or relocate an option, so do not rely on a menu path copied from an older guide.

2. Check the shared Call of Duty settings first

Open the destination title’s settings and look for the settings area that is presented as applying to Call of Duty globally. The label and location can vary, but the purpose is the same: confirm the values that HQ is supposed to share between titles.

Do not change the old game while checking this screen. Compare the destination values with your screenshots or written notes. If a global value is already correct, leave it alone; if it is different, set it deliberately and save before moving to the game-specific pages.

3. Enter the destination game’s own controller page

Next, open the settings section belonging specifically to the new title, then select its controller or input page. This is where the settings that the documentation says are not automatically imported are most likely to appear.

Recreate the old controller layout before fine-tuning aim. A different face-button or bumper assignment changes how every later test feels, making it difficult to tell whether a sensitivity value is wrong or the underlying layout is simply unfamiliar.

4. Rebuild the layout and input behavior

Set the controller preset or custom bindings, then work through the remaining input categories in a fixed order:

  1. Buttons and paddles: Match the actions assigned to each face button, bumper, trigger, stick click and directional input. Include any custom action that is not part of the preset.
  2. Sticks: Match horizontal and vertical sensitivity, response curve and dead-zone choices where the destination title provides equivalent controls.
  3. Aiming: Match ADS sensitivity and timing. The official Black Ops 6 controls guidance specifically identifies sensitivity and ADS timing as settings that deserve attention.
  4. Aim assist: Recreate the available aim-assist selections. If the destination game uses different names or exposes fewer choices, choose the closest documented behavior rather than assuming the old label means the same thing.
  5. Movement: Recheck sprint, slide, crouch, jump and other movement inputs. New mechanics can create options that did not exist in the previous title.

Save after completing each page if the game uses a separate confirmation action. If it saves automatically, leave the page and return to verify that the values stayed in place.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Test in a low-stakes environment

Use a training area, practice range or an unimportant match before judging the transfer. Start with ordinary movement, then aim down sights, change targets, sprint, slide and reload using the buttons you expect. This exposes a swapped binding or an unexpected ADS transition without risking a competitive match.

Test both hip-fire and ADS. A layout can feel correct while standing still but reveal a response-curve or timing difference when you track a moving target. Make one change at a time and record the replacement value so you can reverse it.

6. Verify every mode you actually play

Return to the mode selector and repeat a short input check in each relevant mode. Multiplayer, Zombies, Black Ops campaign or co-op content and Warzone can expose different local settings. The official Black Ops 7 materials describe Multiplayer, Zombies and Co-op Campaign as separate experiences, so a setting that behaves correctly in one does not prove that every mode uses the same local configuration.

Controller settings that most often feel different

Button layout and custom mapping

A preset name is only a shortcut for a group of bindings. Compare the individual actions if your preferred layout is custom or if the new title adds an action. A button that was previously used for melee, equipment or a movement action may be assigned differently when a title introduces another mechanic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check stick-click actions separately. They are easy to overlook in a screenshot and can affect sprint, melee or stance changes. Also confirm whether a trigger or bumper is assigned to the action you use to aim and fire; a familiar-looking preset can still feel wrong if the destination title’s implementation differs.

Stick sensitivity

Match the horizontal and vertical values first, then test small adjustments. Sensitivity numbers are not a universal physical unit across Call of Duty titles. Even when the displayed number matches, field of view, animation timing, aim-assist behavior and the game’s response curve can make the movement feel different.

Do not compensate for a button error by changing sensitivity. Confirm the layout, dead zones and response curve before deciding that the number itself needs to change.

ADS sensitivity and timing

ADS sensitivity controls how quickly the reticle responds while aiming. ADS timing determines when that change takes effect during the transition into an aimed view. The Black Ops 6 controls guide calls out both sensitivity and ADS timing because a mismatch can be noticeable even when the basic stick sensitivity is identical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test the transition with the same weapon type or a comparable sight. Press aim, begin tracking immediately and then release aim while turning. If the reticle accelerates or slows at a different point than in the old title, review the timing option before changing the base sensitivity.

Response curve, aim assist and dead zones

Response-curve choices alter how stick movement is translated into camera movement. Aim-assist options alter how the game behaves near a target. Dead zones determine how much stick movement is ignored before the camera responds. These settings can be title-specific even when the menus look familiar.

Compare the names and descriptions shown by the destination game. If an option has no direct counterpart, note that difference rather than forcing an unrelated setting to match. The goal is predictable input, not identical numbers at any cost.

Movement and new mechanics

Movement settings are especially likely to change between titles. Sprint, slide, crouch, jump and stance behavior can be represented by different options or timing rules. Recheck these after the basic layout is restored, and perform the same movement sequence in the mode where you use it most.

Common transfer scenarios

Modern Warfare III to Black Ops 6

Launch Black Ops 6 from Call of Duty HQ, confirm the shared settings, then open Black Ops 6’s own controller page. Compare the Modern Warfare III layout, sensitivity, ADS sensitivity and ADS timing rather than assuming that the shared layer reproduced them. The official Black Ops 6 guidance makes sensitivity and ADS timing priority checks.

If the layout is present but aiming feels slower or faster, leave the button mapping unchanged and test ADS timing first. Change only one value per trial, and keep the original Modern Warfare III values available as your reference.

Moving to Black Ops 7

Use the same two-layer process for Black Ops 7. Verify the global settings, then inspect the title-specific controller page and repeat the check in Multiplayer, Zombies and Co-op Campaign. Those modes are presented as distinct experiences, so do not assume that a setting verified in Multiplayer automatically describes the other two.

Warzone and a Black Ops title

Warzone has its own continuity context, so treat a Warzone-to-Black Ops or Black Ops-to-Warzone move as a comparison, not a guaranteed one-click copy. Confirm the shared values, then inspect the destination game’s local controller settings and test the actual mode you intend to play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your Warzone setup uses values or behavior that the Black Ops title does not expose, preserve the old notes and choose the closest available destination option. Keep separate notes for each title instead of overwriting one profile with assumptions.

Why a setting did not carry over

The value belongs to the title-specific layer

This is the expected explanation when the layout, movement behavior or a new-mechanic option remains at its default. The official HQ documentation says individual-title settings are not automatically imported. Recreate the value on the destination title’s controller page.

The option exists under a different label

Updates and title changes can rename or reorganize menus. Search the controller, input, gameplay and movement sections for the function rather than looking only for the old wording. If no equivalent appears, record the difference and test the closest documented option.

Sensitivity transferred but the game still feels wrong

Check ADS timing, response curve and dead zones before changing the main sensitivity. A matching number does not guarantee matching camera behavior. Test one variable at a time so you know which adjustment changed the result.

The setup works in one mode but not another

Open the mode that feels wrong and inspect its local settings. Multiplayer, Zombies, Black Ops campaign or co-op content and Warzone can expose different settings contexts. Reapply the mode-specific value and test again there.

You cannot find an import command

The official documentation establishes the import policy, not one universal button-by-button path. Some versions may show shared values as already present rather than offering a command named Import. Confirm the global settings manually, then perform the title-specific comparison; do not wait for a button that your version does not display.

A patch changed the behavior

Save a fresh screenshot after a major update and compare the current menu labels with your notes. If a value moved or a new option appeared, update the destination title’s local settings and retest before competitive play.

Controller hardware: what it can and cannot transfer

Your physical controller does not carry the Call of Duty settings file between games. A standard controller is sufficient for the transfer procedure because the work happens in the game’s settings menus.

An Xbox Elite controller is an optional configurable device referenced by the official Black Ops 6 controls guide. It can provide hardware-level configuration features, but buying one is not required to import or recreate an in-game layout. Hardware also does not remove the need to check title-specific sensitivity, ADS timing, response curve or mode settings.

Do not use input-modification devices such as Cronus Zen or XIM Matrix to force a layout or alter input behavior. Call of Duty’s anti-cheat update says these devices are not permitted. Use the supported in-game controls and the controller you already own.

A repeatable checklist for every new title

  1. Capture the old title’s complete controller and movement pages.
  2. Open the new title through Call of Duty HQ.
  3. Confirm the shared Call of Duty settings that HQ imported.
  4. Open the destination title’s own controller settings.
  5. Recreate button mappings and the controller layout.
  6. Compare stick sensitivity, ADS sensitivity and ADS timing.
  7. Check response curve, aim assist, dead zones and movement behavior.
  8. Save the destination values and return to the page to verify them.
  9. Test movement, hip-fire, ADS and button actions in a low-stakes area.
  10. Repeat the test in each mode you play, including Warzone when relevant.
  11. Keep separate notes for each title so a later update does not erase your working setup.

The reliable rule is simple: trust automatic import only for the shared settings layer, and manually verify everything that belongs to a specific game. That approach takes longer than assuming one profile moved intact, but it prevents the most common problems—wrong bindings, changed ADS timing and a setup that works in one mode but not another.
