Keep both phones nearby, unlock the old one, connect the new phone to Wi‑Fi, and be ready to confirm your phone number and the correct ZIP code. If setup is already finished, transfer the line from Settings > Cellular > Set Up Cellular (or Add eSIM) using Transfer From Nearby iPhone.
What moves during the transfer
Moving to a replacement iPhone involves two related but separate operations:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Data and content transfer: Apple Quick Start copies information such as settings and personal content from the old iPhone while you set up the new one.
- AT&T line transfer: The cellular setup prompts move or activate your AT&T number, normally by downloading an eSIM to the new iPhone.
Quick Start does not itself prove that cellular service has moved. A phone can finish copying photos, messages, settings, and apps while the AT&T line is still waiting for activation. Finish the cellular prompts and place a test call before erasing or sending back the old phone.

The two operations can also finish at different times. Keep the old iPhone powered on and available until the new phone shows the correct number, has AT&T signal, and can make and receive calls and texts.

Prepare both iPhones
Do these checks before turning on the replacement phone. They prevent the most common causes of a missing Transfer From Nearby iPhone option.
- Keep the iPhones next to each other throughout setup. Nearby transfer depends on the devices being close enough to communicate.
- Unlock the old iPhone and have its device passcode available. You may need to enter it on the new phone.
- Turn on Bluetooth on both devices.
- Connect the new iPhone to Wi‑Fi. A personal hotspot can be used when ordinary Wi‑Fi is unavailable.
- For Apple’s eSIM Quick Transfer route, sign in to the same Apple Account on both iPhones.
- Use iOS 18.4 or later on both devices for Apple’s documented eSIM Quick Transfer requirements. Apple’s requirements and the wording of setup screens can change with later iOS releases.
- Keep your AT&T account details available in case the activation screen asks for verification.
- Keep both phones charged, or connect them to power if you expect the setup and content copy to take a while. Do not intentionally shut either phone down during an active transfer.
These preparations apply to the transfer workflow, not to every possible iPhone purchase. The replacement iPhone does not need to be a particular model for the documented transfer instructions. Check device compatibility separately if you are choosing a phone; the transfer instructions themselves do not name a required model.
Transfer your data and AT&T number during iPhone setup
This is the preferred route when the new iPhone has not yet completed setup.
- Turn on the replacement iPhone. Follow the opening screens until Quick Start appears. Place the new phone beside the unlocked old iPhone.
- Start Quick Start. On the old iPhone, accept the prompt to set up the new device. Use the old phone’s camera if the setup animation asks you to scan it, then enter the old iPhone’s passcode on the new phone.
- Choose the data-transfer option. Select the option to transfer data and content directly from the old iPhone when presented. Leave both phones near each other and connected to power if the transfer is lengthy; do not turn either phone off while it is in progress.
- Reach the cellular step. During setup, AT&T’s flow asks you to confirm the phone number associated with the purchase and enter a ZIP code. Read the number carefully before accepting it.
- Enter the appropriate ZIP code. The correct choice depends on where the replacement phone was purchased:
| Purchase source | ZIP code AT&T says to use |
|---|---|
| Phone purchased from AT&T | Shipping ZIP code or account billing ZIP code |
| Phone purchased from Apple | Account billing ZIP code |
- Approve eSIM activation. The new iPhone downloads and activates the AT&T eSIM in the background while setup continues. Follow every prompt on both phones. If the displayed number is not the number tied to the purchase, stop and contact AT&T rather than activating the wrong line.
- Finish Quick Start. Let the data transfer and device setup complete. The old phone may remain usable until the new cellular plan activates; once the new plan is active, the old SIM or line is deactivated as part of the changeover.
Do not confuse the animation or progress screen for proof that service is ready. The reliable confirmation is a working AT&T line on the new iPhone, including an outgoing call with Wi‑Fi disabled.
Transfer the AT&T eSIM after setup is complete
If you already reached the Home Screen without moving the line, you can start the cellular transfer from Settings. Keep the old iPhone nearby, unlocked, and with Bluetooth enabled.
- On the new iPhone, open Settings.
- Tap Cellular.
- Tap Set Up Cellular. If a cellular plan is already listed, tap Add eSIM instead; the label depends on the device’s current state and iOS version.
- Choose Transfer From Nearby iPhone.
- Confirm the transfer on the old iPhone and follow the on-screen instructions on both devices.
- Wait for the new iPhone to show the AT&T line, then place a call with Wi‑Fi temporarily off.
Apple and AT&T document this post-setup route. If a carrier setup banner appears instead of the nearby-transfer option, follow that carrier-specific flow. Available choices can vary by iOS release, device state, and carrier support.
If you see an existing plan but no transfer button, do not delete the plan simply to make another option appear. First verify that the old phone is unlocked, nearby, signed in to the same Apple Account, and running a supported iOS version. If the carrier presents a different activation path, use that path rather than guessing.
When the old iPhone has a physical SIM
A physical SIM and an eSIM are different forms of the same cellular subscription. If the old phone uses a physical AT&T SIM and the replacement iPhone uses eSIM, the line must be transferred to the new phone’s eSIM before AT&T cellular service works there.

AT&T’s instructions specifically address iPhone 14 series and later devices as eSIM phones. In that situation, do not expect to obtain service by moving the old plastic SIM into the replacement device. Complete the eSIM activation or line-transfer prompts instead. The old physical SIM remains the previous phone’s connection until the new plan activates, after which the old SIM is deactivated.
This is why a completed data copy can coexist with a new iPhone that shows no AT&T bars. Data transfer does not substitute for converting or downloading the line’s eSIM profile. Return to the cellular setup step and complete it before treating the move as finished.
Verify that the number and service moved
Use these checks before wiping the old iPhone:
- Open Settings > Cellular on the new iPhone and confirm that the AT&T line is listed and turned on.
- Look at the phone number shown in the cellular details and confirm it is your existing number.
- Turn off Wi‑Fi temporarily and check that the new phone shows AT&T cellular signal.
- Make an outgoing call. AT&T’s prepaid eSIM instructions specifically recommend calling from the new iPhone to confirm service.
- Ask someone to call you back or send a text message so you test incoming service as well.
- Test cellular data by opening a site or app with Wi‑Fi still disabled.
Keep the old iPhone intact until these checks pass and you have confirmed that important photos, messages, authenticator accounts, and other data are present on the new device. A successful call confirms basic voice service, but it does not confirm that every app or security account has been restored.
If “Transfer From Nearby iPhone” does not appear
The missing option usually indicates that one of the transfer prerequisites is not met or that the carrier requires another activation method. Work through these branches in order.
Check proximity, power, Bluetooth, and Wi‑Fi
Place the phones within arm’s reach, unlock the old one, turn on Bluetooth, and connect the new phone to Wi‑Fi or a hotspot. Keep both screens awake while restarting the cellular setup. If either phone is locked or out of range, the nearby-device handoff may not be offered. Moving the phones closer and reopening Settings > Cellular is safer than repeatedly deleting an eSIM.
Check Apple Account and iOS requirements
For Apple’s eSIM Quick Transfer, both iPhones should use the same Apple Account and run iOS 18.4 or later. Update the phones when practical, then reopen Settings > Cellular on the new iPhone. Apple’s current requirements and labels may change in a later iOS release, so follow the wording shown on your devices.
If the phones use different Apple Accounts, the nearby eSIM handoff may not be available even though Quick Start can still show other setup choices. Resolve the account and software prerequisites first, then try the cellular transfer again.

Use another supported eSIM method
Apple identifies several alternatives when nearby transfer is unavailable, depending on carrier support:
- Carrier activation: Continue from a carrier setup notification or banner on the iPhone.
- QR code: Scan an AT&T-provided eSIM QR code if AT&T gives you one for your line.
- Carrier link or app: Use the official AT&T activation link or app when the carrier directs you to it.
- Manual entry: Enter eSIM details manually if AT&T supplies the required information and the iPhone offers manual setup.
Do not guess at eSIM details. Use only the method and information supplied by AT&T for your account. A QR code, link, or manual-entry path is carrier-specific; it is not interchangeable with another customer’s activation information.
Recheck the number and ZIP code
If setup rejects your verification, confirm that the number shown is the number associated with the purchase. For an AT&T purchase, try the shipping ZIP code or the account billing ZIP code. For an Apple purchase, use the account billing ZIP code. A mismatch can prevent activation; AT&T says to contact it when the displayed number does not match.
Do not substitute a different address simply because it is more convenient. The required ZIP depends on the purchase source and the account information AT&T is validating.

When the old phone still has service but the new one does not
This usually means the data copy completed but the cellular activation did not. Return to Settings > Cellular > Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM on the new iPhone and complete the transfer. Keep the old phone powered on until the new line activates. Once activation succeeds, the previous SIM is deactivated, so service on the old phone may stop.
When activation appears complete but calls fail
- Confirm the AT&T line is enabled under Settings > Cellular.
- Toggle Airplane Mode on, wait a few seconds, and turn it off to make the phone reconnect to the network.
- Restart the new iPhone and place another call with Wi‑Fi disabled.
- Check that the number displayed in cellular settings is the intended line.
- If the number is wrong, the ZIP code was rejected, or the phone remains without service, contact AT&T before deleting the eSIM or erasing either phone.
Deleting a profile or wiping the old phone can remove useful information while the account issue is still unresolved. Preserve both devices and the current cellular state until AT&T tells you what to do next.
Moving a number from another carrier is a different process
Transferring an existing AT&T line between two iPhones is not the same as porting a number from another carrier. For a number coming from a different carrier, AT&T directs customers to use its activation flow before turning on the phone. That process may require account information from the former carrier and is outside the nearby-iPhone transfer described here.

If your number is already active on AT&T, use Quick Start plus AT&T’s eSIM prompts instead of starting a new-carrier port. Choosing the wrong flow can leave the number associated with the wrong activation request. If you are unsure whether the number is already an AT&T line, check the account and the number displayed during setup before approving anything.

What happens to the old SIM and old iPhone
Apple states that “When the cellular plan on your new iPhone activates, it deactivates your previous SIM.” Read the full guidance in Apple’s Set up eSIM on iPhone support article. This deactivation is why you should not erase, trade in, or mail the old phone until the new phone has a working AT&T line and your data has been checked.
After successful activation, you can keep the old iPhone as a backup, erase it for resale, or return it according to your purchase arrangement. Erasing the old phone is a separate step from transferring the number and data. The transfer does not automatically complete every account, app, or security cleanup task on the old device.

| Your situation | Use this route | Key action |
|---|---|---|
| New iPhone has not completed setup | Quick Start during setup | Transfer data and content, then confirm the AT&T number and ZIP code when the cellular prompts appear |
| New iPhone is already at the Home Screen | Settings-based eSIM transfer | Settings > Cellular > Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM > Transfer From Nearby iPhone |
| Old phone uses a physical SIM and the new phone uses eSIM | eSIM activation or line transfer | Move the AT&T line to the new eSIM; inserting the old physical SIM is not the documented route for the eSIM device |
| Number is coming from another carrier | AT&T activation and porting flow | Start AT&T’s activation process before turning on the phone; this is not an existing-AT&T line transfer |
| Nearby transfer is unavailable | Carrier-supported alternative | Use carrier activation, a QR code, a carrier link or app, or manual setup when AT&T provides that method |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Erasing the old phone too soon: A data copy can finish before eSIM activation, so keep the old phone until calls, texts, and cellular data work.
- Using the wrong ZIP code: The accepted ZIP depends on whether the phone came from AT&T or Apple.
- Approving the wrong number: Stop if the number shown during setup is not the line associated with the purchase.
- Expecting a physical SIM to work in an eSIM-only replacement: Transfer the subscription to eSIM instead.
- Assuming Wi‑Fi proves cellular service: Turn Wi‑Fi off for your call and data tests.
- Deleting an eSIM while troubleshooting: Preserve the current setup and contact AT&T if activation is wrong or incomplete.
- Starting a port when the line is already on AT&T: Use the existing-line transfer route rather than the new-carrier activation flow.
Before you erase the old iPhone
- The new iPhone shows the correct AT&T number in cellular settings.
- An outgoing call connects with Wi‑Fi disabled.
- An incoming call and text reach the new phone.
- Cellular data works with Wi‑Fi disabled.
- Your photos, messages, contacts, and other essential content are present.
- Any two-factor-authentication or security apps you rely on work on the new phone.
Once those checks pass, the transfer is complete from a practical standpoint. Keep the phones together only if you still need to finish an Apple Account or app setup task; the AT&T line itself is on the new iPhone.

Why is Transfer From Nearby iPhone missing?
Check that both phones are nearby and unlocked, Bluetooth is on, the new phone has Wi‑Fi, both use the same Apple Account, and both meet Apple’s iOS 18.4-or-later requirement for eSIM Quick Transfer. If the option still does not appear, use a carrier-supported activation method.
Can I move a physical AT&T SIM into a newer iPhone?
If the replacement iPhone uses eSIM, transfer the AT&T line to its eSIM instead. AT&T’s instructions identify iPhone 14 series and later as eSIM devices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow do I know the transfer is finished?
Confirm the correct number under Settings > Cellular, verify AT&T signal with Wi‑Fi off, make an outgoing call, receive a call or text, and test cellular data.
Is transferring an AT&T line the same as bringing a number from another carrier?
No. A number coming from another carrier uses AT&T’s activation and porting flow. An existing AT&T line uses Quick Start plus the AT&T eSIM transfer prompts.
When is it safe to erase the old iPhone?
Wait until the new iPhone has working AT&T voice, text, and data service and you have checked important content and security apps. Apple says the previous SIM is deactivated when the new cellular plan activates.
The Bottom Line
Use Quick Start for the data and content, then complete AT&T’s eSIM prompts for the number. Confirm the displayed number and the ZIP code, test voice, text, and cellular data with Wi‑Fi off, and keep the old iPhone until every check passes.
