Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteShort answer: an Xbox 360 save can move to an Xbox Series X|S through Cloud Saved Games when you are launching the same title through Xbox backward compatibility. It is not a direct storage-device transfer. A separately sold remastered port is different software, so its publisher must specifically support importing the older save. Upload the save from the Xbox 360, sign in on the Series console with the same account, and let synchronization finish before you start playing.
First, identify which version you are trying to play
The phrase “the game on Series X|S” can describe two different products. That distinction determines whether the normal Xbox cloud workflow applies.

The original Xbox 360 release running through backward compatibility
A backward-compatible release is the original Xbox 360 game made playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S through Microsoft’s compatibility program. For a supported title, the documented bridge is the Xbox 360 Cloud Saved Games area. You upload the local 360 save there, then launch that same backward-compatible title on the Series console.

Microsoft’s Backward Compatibility FAQ says that “game saves will not transfer to Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S” for the initial Xbox 360-to-new-console move. In practical terms, that rules out a direct copy from the 360’s local storage to the newer console. The save must first be placed in the cloud through the Xbox 360 workflow. Once a save exists on Xbox One or Series X|S, Microsoft says it can move between those newer consoles through the cloud.
#1 Best Overall
A separately released remastered port
A remaster is a new port, not automatically the same backward-compatible release. It can use a different save format, progression model, account link, or upgrade path. A 360 save sitting in Cloud Saved Games therefore does not guarantee that the remastered game will list it or import it.
Before buying, downloading, or deleting anything, read the remaster publisher’s support page for the exact title and edition. Look for explicit language about Xbox 360 save import, cross-generation migration, an upgrade from the Xbox One version, or a required account connection. Do not treat backward-compatibility support as proof that the remaster accepts the same data.
Which transfer path applies?
| Path | Save compatibility | What you must do |
|---|---|---|
| Backward-compatible Xbox 360 release | Covered by the Xbox cloud-save workflow when the title is supported | Copy or move the 360 save to Cloud Saved Games, then launch the same title on Xbox Series X|S with the same account |
| Separate remastered port | Depends on the publisher and the specific game | Read the port’s official migration or upgrade notes; do not assume the 360 cloud save imports |
This distinction also explains why one player may see a save immediately in a backward-compatible edition while another, using a remaster, sees only a new-game option. They are using different save systems even if the game title is similar.
What you need before starting
- The Xbox 360 that contains the save. If the only copy is still on local 360 storage, that console is the relevant physical item for the upload step.
- Access to Xbox network services on the 360. The console has to connect so the save can be placed in Cloud Saved Games.
- The same account on both consoles. Sign in on the 360 with the account that owns the save, and use that account on the Series X|S.
- A supported backward-compatible release if you are using the standard cloud workflow. Compatibility of the game itself is separate from whether a remastered port accepts the data.
- Time for synchronization. The Series console may upload a newer local copy, download newer cloud data, do nothing when both copies match, or ask you to resolve a conflict.
The cited Microsoft guidance does not establish that a particular paid subscription tier is required. It does establish that the 360 must connect to Xbox network services for the cloud-save step. If your console cannot sign in or reach those services, the upload cannot complete through this documented method.
How to upload the save from Xbox 360
Do this before launching the game on the Series console. If the save remains only on local 360 storage, the newer console has nothing to download.

- Sign in to the correct account on the Xbox 360. Use the account that owns the save and that you will use on the Series X|S. If multiple profiles are present, verify the profile before opening storage management.
- Connect the 360 to Xbox network services. The console needs an active network connection to place the save in cloud storage. Allow sign-in to finish rather than starting the game offline.
- Open the Xbox 360 storage-management area. Locate the game’s saved data in the console’s storage controls. The exact screen can vary with the 360 dashboard version, but the operation is the storage action that exposes the destination named Cloud Saved Games.
- Select the correct game save. Check the game title and, where the console shows it, the save’s date or progress. Selecting the wrong profile’s save will not make it appear under the desired account on Series X|S.
- Copy or move the save to Cloud Saved Games. Choose Cloud Saved Games as the destination. Copying leaves the local copy on the 360; moving removes it from the original storage location after the cloud operation succeeds. If you are uncertain which version is current, copying first preserves a local fallback.
- Wait for the upload to finish. Do not power off the console or disconnect it while the storage operation is in progress. Rockstar Games Support gives the same essential instruction for an Xbox 360 backward-compatible title: “To continue playing an Xbox 360 backward-compatible title on the Xbox One you must first save the Xbox 360 game in the cloud.”
- Confirm that Cloud Saved Games contains the save. The important checkpoint is that the save is no longer only on the 360’s local storage. If it does not appear in the cloud destination, fix the sign-in or network problem before moving to the Series console.
Cloud Saved Games is the bridge in this workflow. A transfer cable or a generic USB-drive copy is not the documented general method in Microsoft’s backward-compatibility guidance cited here.
How to retrieve the save on Xbox Series X|S
- Install or insert the supported backward-compatible game. Use the original Xbox 360 release as provided through backward compatibility, not a similarly named remastered port unless that publisher explicitly documents an import.
- Sign in with the same account used on the 360. A different account can have its own cloud data and may present no save at all.
- Start the game and wait at the synchronization screen. Let the save-sync process complete before entering the game or creating a new save. Interrupting the first synchronization can leave you looking at an incomplete local state.
- Read the sync result before choosing an option. Microsoft describes four possible outcomes: the console can upload a newer local save, download newer cloud data, do nothing when both copies match, or present a conflict that requires your decision.
- Choose the copy that contains the progress you want. If a conflict appears, compare the available dates or progress descriptions shown by the console. Keep the cloud copy when it is the completed 360 save; keep the local copy only when you intentionally want the newer Series-side progress.
- Load the game and verify the expected checkpoint. Check the campaign slot, character, or other progress indicator you recognize from the 360. Verification catches an account or version mismatch before you overwrite anything with a new save.
How to handle a local/cloud conflict safely
A conflict means the console sees different local and cloud versions. It is not proof that the transfer failed. It usually means both locations have changed and the system cannot choose safely on your behalf.
If the 360 cloud copy is the one you need
Select the option that downloads or keeps the newer cloud data when the conflict screen identifies that copy as the desired version. This is the usual choice when you have just uploaded the completed 360 save and have not intentionally played the title on the Series console.
If the Series console contains newer progress
Do not replace it with the cloud copy merely because the cloud is older by date. If you have already played on Series X|S and want that progress, select the local version when the conflict choices identify it as the copy to keep.
If the dates or descriptions are unclear
Stop at the conflict prompt and avoid creating another save. Recheck which account you used, whether the 360 upload finished, and which edition of the game you launched. Choosing without identifying the desired copy can overwrite the progress you meant to preserve.
Why the save may be missing on Series S
The save was never uploaded from the 360
A local save on the 360 is not visible to the Series console. Return to the 360 storage-management area, connect to Xbox network services, and place the save in Cloud Saved Games. Then restart the supported backward-compatible title on Series S and allow synchronization to run.
You used a different account
Cloud data is associated with the account used for the save workflow. Sign out and verify that the Series S profile matches the account that owned the 360 save. If the 360 save belonged to another profile, switching consoles without switching accounts will not make it appear.
You launched a remastered port
The remaster may not read the backward-compatible game’s cloud save. Check the publisher’s instructions for that exact port, region, edition, and upgrade route. If no official import is documented, the missing save is an expected compatibility limitation rather than a synchronization error.
The title is not supported through backward compatibility
The cloud workflow described here applies when the original Xbox 360 release is supported by Microsoft’s compatibility program. A title that is unavailable through that program needs a publisher-defined migration path, if one exists.
Synchronization has not finished
Starting the game before the sync prompt completes can make the local console appear empty or current with the wrong copy. Close the game, reconnect the console if necessary, sign in again, and allow the synchronization process to complete before checking the save list.
What “automatically transfers” means for a remaster
Publisher wording can be narrower than it first sounds. Capcom’s support page for Resident Evil Village, for example, says that when an Xbox One owner upgrades to the Xbox Series X|S version, “save data will transfer automatically between them.” That is a specific statement about that game’s Xbox One-to-Series upgrade path. It does not establish a universal rule for Xbox 360 saves or for every remaster.
When reading a port’s support page, identify all of the following:
- Source version: Does the instruction name Xbox 360, Xbox One, or only a newer-generation edition?
- Destination version: Is the destination the backward-compatible release or a separately sold remaster?
- Account requirement: Does migration use the Xbox account, a publisher account, or both?
- Edition and upgrade path: Is the import limited to a particular edition, purchase, or upgrade entitlement?
- Timing: Must the import happen on first launch, through an in-game menu, or before creating a new save?
Only an affirmative instruction covering your exact source and destination should be treated as support. If the page discusses automatic transfer between Xbox One and Series X|S but says nothing about Xbox 360, that evidence is insufficient for a 360-to-remaster promise.

| Mistake | Why it causes trouble | Safer action |
|---|---|---|
| Launching the remaster and expecting the 360 cloud save to appear | A remaster can use a separate save format and migration system | Check the publisher’s exact import instructions first |
| Copying a save only to local storage on the 360 | The Series console cannot retrieve a save that never reached the cloud | Use Cloud Saved Games as the destination |
| Using a different account on Series X|S | The console is looking at another account’s cloud data | Sign in with the account that owns the 360 save |
| Choosing a conflict option without checking dates or progress | You may overwrite the version you intended to keep | Identify the desired local or cloud copy before confirming |
| Assuming a USB drive or transfer cable is the general solution | The cited backward-compatibility workflow does not document that method | Use the 360-to-cloud process for a supported backward-compatible game |
| Creating a new save before synchronization completes | The new local state can complicate the conflict decision | Wait for the sync prompt to finish, then verify the imported progress |
Do you need Xbox Live to move a 360 save?
The official workflow requires the Xbox 360 to connect to Xbox network services so it can upload the save to Cloud Saved Games. The material cited for this process does not specify a paid subscription requirement or promise that every account tier has identical cloud features. Therefore, the practical requirement you can establish is network sign-in and access to the cloud-save function on the 360, not a particular subscription name.

If you cannot connect, the save remains local and the Series console cannot use this bridge. Resolve the 360’s account or network connection first; changing the Series console will not replace the upload step.

How Microsoft’s compatibility testing relates to saves
Xbox Wire reported more than 500,000 hours of gameplay testing across the backward-compatibility catalog in 2020. That figure describes the scale of compatibility testing, not a guarantee that every title supports every save scenario or that a remastered port accepts 360 data. Save behavior still depends on the supported backward-compatible release and, separately, on the remaster publisher’s migration design.
A decision checklist before you buy or start the remaster
- Write down the exact game name and edition on the Xbox 360.
- Determine whether the Series version is the original release running through backward compatibility or a separate remaster.
- If it is backward compatible, upload the save to Cloud Saved Games before launching the game on Series X|S.
- If it is a remaster, read the publisher’s support page for an explicit Xbox 360 import or upgrade path.
- Confirm which account and edition the instructions require.
- Do not delete the 360 local save until the cloud copy has uploaded and the Series console has loaded the expected progress.
- When a sync conflict appears, inspect the local and cloud descriptions before selecting a replacement.
The practical answer for each common question
Can I transfer my Xbox 360 save to Xbox Series X?
Yes, for a supported backward-compatible Xbox 360 title, by uploading the save to Cloud Saved Games and launching the same title on Series X|S with the same account. It is not a direct local-storage transfer.
Will my old 360 save work on the remastered version?
Only if that remaster’s publisher explicitly supports the import. Backward compatibility of the original game does not automatically cover a separately released port.

How do I upload an Xbox 360 save to the cloud?
Sign in on the 360 with the save-owning account, connect to Xbox network services, open storage management, and copy or move the game save to Cloud Saved Games.
Why is my save missing on Series S?
The usual causes are an incomplete 360 upload, a different account, an unsupported title, an unfinished synchronization, or launching a remaster that does not import the backward-compatible save.
