To move a The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt save from PC to a console, use the game’s built-in Cross Progression system. Update the game, link both copies to the same CD PROJEKT RED account, create a new save after enabling the feature, and verify that a cloud icon appears beside it. On the console, link that same account through My Rewards and load the uploaded save.
This is an account-and-cloud transfer, not a matter of copying a Windows save file directly to a console with a USB drive. The destination must also have compatible game content, expansions and, for modded saves, the required mods.

What you need before transferring
Cross Progression works only when the source and destination meet the game’s account, software and content requirements. Check these items before opening the save menu:

- A current game build: Update The Witcher 3 on the source platform first. The installed version is shown on the game’s main menu. Updating the destination copy as well avoids version-related loading problems.
- One CD PROJEKT RED account: You must use exactly the same account on the PC and console. A different email address, a second account or a newly created console account will not expose the uploaded save.
- The game on the destination platform: Cross Progression transfers save data, not a game license. You need a playable copy on the console you are using.
- Matching game content: If the save uses an expansion or downloadable content, that content must be installed on the destination. Edition differences are covered below.
- Mod compatibility: A modded save needs the same set of enabled mods on both platforms, and the destination must support them. A console that cannot provide a required mod may be unable to load the save correctly.
- Network access: The source must be able to upload the save and the destination must be able to retrieve it. The official procedure does not provide an offline PC-to-console file-transfer route.
PC-to-console transfer: the official procedure
Use this sequence when the source is a Windows, macOS-supported or other PC installation and the destination is a PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo console edition that supports Cross Progression.

1. Update the source installation
Install the latest patch on the PC. Open the main menu and note the displayed version if you need to compare it with the console installation. If the game offers an update, finish it before creating the upload save. Do not switch platforms while an update or cloud synchronization is still in progress.
2. Open the save interface and connect the account
Choose Load Game. The Cross Progression control appears at the bottom of the screen. Use it to start account linking, or choose My Rewards if the game presents the account connection there. Sign in to the CD PROJEKT RED account that you intend to use on the console.
After linking, Cross Progression is enabled by default. You can check or change it at Options → Gameplay → Cross Progression. Confirm that the setting is on before making the save you want to transfer.

Load the game state you want to continue, then create a new manual save after Cross Progression is enabled. The practical safeguard is to create this new save rather than relying on an older save made before account linking or before the feature was switched on.
Return to the save list and look for the cloud icon beside the new save’s name. That icon is the visible confirmation that the save has been uploaded for Cross Progression. If it is absent, do not move to the console yet; use the troubleshooting checks later in this guide.
4. Start the destination copy
Launch The Witcher 3 on the console and open My Rewards. Link the console copy to the same CD PROJEKT RED account used on the PC. Account identity matters more than the console profile name: the cloud save is associated with the linked CD PROJEKT RED account.
5. Retrieve the save from Load Game
Open Load Game on the console. The uploaded save should appear in the list. Select it and allow the game to load completely before saving again on the console. The Cross Progression system provides the latest uploaded save for each save type, so continue with the entry that has the cloud status and the timestamp you expect.

Once the transferred game is open, create a new manual save on the console. This gives you a local recovery point before you make further choices or overwrite the cloud version. If you plan to move between platforms repeatedly, upload a new save after each session and verify its cloud icon before closing the game.
How Cross Progression handles saves
The feature is a cloud synchronization service tied to the linked account. It does not expose a normal PC save folder for direct import, and it does not convert a USB copy into a console save. The upload is initiated from inside the game, then the destination retrieves the account’s uploaded entry from its own Load Game screen.
The official guide describes the latest save as available for every save type. In practice, that means you should identify the precise manual, quick or other save entry you intend to continue, create a new version after enabling Cross Progression, and confirm its cloud icon. Relying on a similarly named older file can make it appear that the transfer failed when the wrong entry was selected.
Edition, expansion and DLC compatibility
Most loading failures are content mismatches rather than account failures. Check the edition and installed content on both devices before attempting repeated uploads.

Base-game save loaded in Complete Edition
A save made with the base game and no expansions can load in the Complete Edition. This is the less restrictive direction: the newer edition can read a base-game save even though the save does not contain expansion content.
Complete Edition save loaded in the base game
A save created in the Complete Edition will not load in a base-game installation unless the required expansions and downloadable content are present. If the save has progressed through content from Hearts of Stone or Blood and Wine, install those components on the destination before trying to open it.
Regular, GOTY and Complete console products
CD PROJEKT RED distinguishes local console saves for the regular game and the GOTY or Complete Edition as separate products; those local saves are not automatically compatible with one another. Cross Progression is the supported route for continuing from a base-version installation when the normal local-save path does not match the destination product. Treat the edition labels on the two stores or discs as significant, not as cosmetic names.
Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine in the base-game FAQ
CD PROJEKT RED’s FAQ states that Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are included in the Base Game and that the save files remain compatible. Because edition packaging and upgrade programs can change, verify the current product description and installed content on the platform receiving the save.
Mods and cross-platform saves
A modded save is portable only when its dependencies are portable. The official cross-platform mod guidance requires the same set of mods to be enabled on both sides. “Nearly the same” is not enough: a missing, different or incompatible mod can prevent loading or produce an incorrect game state.
Before uploading a modded save
- Record the exact enabled mod set on the PC.
- Confirm that each required mod exists for, and is permitted on, the destination platform.
- Enable the matching set on the destination before opening the cloud save.
- Create the upload save only after the mod configuration is complete.
Console achievements and trophies are disabled on modded saves according to the official support article. If earning console achievements matters, use an unmodded save rather than removing mods from an active save and assuming every scripted change will be reversible.
Which transfer method applies to your platform pair?
PC-to-console and same-family console upgrades are different workflows. Choose the row matching your source and destination instead of applying a console migration method to a PC save.

PS4 to PS5: use the console migration tools
If both ends are PlayStation consoles, CD PROJEKT RED lists three backward-compatibility routes: upload the PS4 save to PlayStation Plus cloud storage, transfer it over a LAN or Wi-Fi connection, or use a compatible storage device. Keep the same PSN account on both consoles. These options move a same-family console save through PlayStation’s system tools; they are not instructions for placing a PC save on a PS5.

Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S: cloud synchronization or network transfer
For Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S, the official guidance describes Smart Delivery with internet-connected, cloud-synchronized saved data. The consoles also provide a network-transfer option. Allow the Xbox One to finish syncing before closing the game, then sign in to the same Xbox profile on the Series console and let the save synchronize or complete the network transfer.
This Xbox process is useful when the source and destination are both Xbox systems. For a PC-to-Xbox move, use CD PROJEKT RED’s Cross Progression account link and cloud-upload workflow; Xbox network transfer cannot read a Windows save folder as a substitute.

Troubleshooting a missing or unloadable save
Work through these checks in order. Each one eliminates a different failure mode, and repeating the upload without checking the account or content usually does not help.

The game is not updated
Check the version shown on the main menu on both platforms and install pending patches. Close and relaunch the game after updating so the account and save menus are rebuilt under the current version.
The accounts are different
Open My Rewards on each platform and verify the linked CD PROJEKT RED account. Do not rely on the console user name or the email stored in a platform store. The two game copies must point to the same CD PROJEKT RED account.
Cross Progression is off
On the source platform, go to Options → Gameplay → Cross Progression and turn it on. Linking normally enables it, but the setting can be toggled, so inspect it rather than assuming the account connection is sufficient.
No new save was created after enabling it
Load the intended game state, create a fresh manual save, return to Load Game and wait for the cloud icon. An older save created before linking may not be the entry that was uploaded.
The cloud icon is missing
Keep the source platform online, remain in the save list long enough for synchronization to finish, and check the account link again. If the new entry still lacks the icon, do not erase the local save; retain it while resolving the account, update or network problem.
The destination cannot load the save
Compare the installed content. A Complete Edition save may require Hearts of Stone, Blood and Wine or other DLC that is absent from the destination. Also compare the regular, GOTY and Complete product versions because local console save compatibility differs between those products.
A modded save fails
Compare the enabled mod lists exactly. Add every required destination-compatible mod before loading, or return to an unmodded save created before the mod was introduced. Removing a mod only on the destination is not a reliable conversion method.
Nothing in the documented checks explains the error
The official troubleshooting material does not document every account, authentication or network error state. Preserve the original local save, record the platform pair, edition, game versions and account used, then consult CD PROJEKT RED support with that information rather than deleting files or unlinking accounts at random.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Copying the PC save folder to a USB drive: The console does not import a Windows save this way. Use the in-game cloud workflow.
- Linking a second account on the console: A console profile can be valid while still being attached to the wrong CD PROJEKT RED account.
- Uploading before turning on Cross Progression: The cloud icon, not the local file name, is the confirmation you need.
- Assuming a game purchase carries the save: Buying the destination edition provides the game, not an automatic save transfer. The account link and upload are still required.
- Ignoring expansions: A save can be valid yet unloadable when the destination lacks content used by that save.
- Using a different mod list: A save with missing dependencies can fail even when the account and game versions match.
- Confusing a same-family migration with a cross-platform move: PlayStation and Xbox system-transfer tools are for their own console generations and do not replace PC-to-console Cross Progression.
What to know about future editions and upgrades
CD PROJEKT RED’s recent FAQ described a Remastered upgrade as planned for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2, with Nintendo Switch owners expected to be able to claim that upgrade at no charge once released. That statement is time-sensitive: an upgrade plan, release date or eligibility rule may change. Check the current official FAQ before moving a save specifically for an upgrade.
The same FAQ says the existing Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine save files remain compatible. Even so, verify the installed edition and expansion licenses on the destination after any major upgrade, because the content available to the receiving game determines whether it can open the save.
