To transfer a The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt save between Nintendo Switch 2 and another platform, use the game’s Cross Progression feature. What you need before starting
Cross Progression works only when the source and destination installations can access the feature and are signed in to the same CD PROJEKT RED account. Prepare both platforms before uploading anything.

- A CD PROJEKT RED account is required. You connect it from the game’s My Rewards menu; the account, rather than your Nintendo profile or another platform profile, is what links the cloud save.
- The desired save must be created after Cross Progression is available. The upload is triggered by making a new save while the feature is active.
- The destination needs compatible game content. Check whether it is the base game or a GOTY/Complete Edition and whether the required expansions and downloadable content are installed.
- Modded saves need matching enabled mods. CD PROJEKT RED says both platforms should use the same enabled mod set.
You do not need a transfer cable, removable storage device, or a manual save-file copy for the documented process. The Switch 2 console itself is not a special transfer accessory; it is simply one of the supported places from which the game can upload or retrieve a save.

How Cross Progression works
Cross Progression keeps the latest uploaded save for each save type available through the game’s Load Game screen on another supported platform. It does not mirror every older local save automatically. Before switching systems, make the specific current save you intend to continue, then confirm that the cloud icon is shown next to its name.
CD PROJEKT RED describes the result this way: “Your latest saves will be automatically uploaded to the cloud so you can easily pick up where you left off on other platforms.” In practice, the visible confirmation is the cloud icon beside the newly created save.
This makes the order important. First decide which story state you want to carry over; then create that save while Cross Progression is active. If you create or upload a different save later, the destination may show that newer state for the relevant save type instead of the point you originally intended to continue.
Transfer a save from Nintendo Switch 2 to another platform
- Check the patch on Switch 2. Launch The Witcher 3 and look beneath the title on the main menu. Install the latest update offered for your version before attempting the transfer.
- Connect your account. Choose My Rewards on the main menu and follow the on-screen instructions to sign in to or create a CD PROJEKT RED account. Use the account you will also use on the destination platform.
- Confirm Cross Progression. Account connection enables the feature by default. If you want to verify it manually, open Options → Gameplay → Cross Progression and make sure it is enabled.
- Make the intended current save. Load the point in the story you want to carry over, then open Load Game. Use the Cross Progression control shown at the bottom right and create a new save. Do not rely on an older local save if your progress has changed since it was made.
- Check the cloud icon. Find the new save in the list and confirm that a cloud icon appears beside its name. That icon indicates that the save was uploaded. If it is absent, do not shut down the source system assuming the transfer completed.
- Open the game on the receiving platform. Launch the correct installation of The Witcher 3, select My Rewards, and connect the same CD PROJEKT RED account used on Switch 2.
- Load the uploaded save. Open Load Game. The uploaded save should be listed there. Select it and allow the destination installation to load the game.
Menu wording can vary slightly by platform. The important sequence is account connection, Cross Progression save creation on the source, cloud-icon confirmation, and Load Game on the destination.
Transfer in the opposite direction
The same process works from another platform to Switch 2 when that platform supports Cross Progression. On the original platform, update the game, connect the CD PROJEKT RED account through My Rewards, create a new Cross Progression save, and verify its cloud icon. Then connect the same account on Switch 2 and retrieve the save from Load Game.
If the platform’s menus use a different location for the Cross Progression control, use the current labels shown in that installation. The account and cloud-save requirements do not change. In either direction, treat the platform where the desired progress currently exists as the source and complete the upload there first.
Edition and downloadable-content compatibility
A save can be present in the cloud and still fail to load if the destination installation does not contain compatible game content. Check the edition and installed expansions before interpreting a loading error as a failed upload.

Why the edition check matters
“Complete Edition” and “GOTY” are not merely labels for the same local console product in this context. A console can treat the base game and the expanded product as separate installations, so a save that exists locally may not appear when you launch the other variant. Cross Progression can bridge a supported continuation, but the destination still needs the content required by the save.
Before transferring, compare the product names on both systems rather than assuming that owning one version grants every expansion needed by the other installation. If the source save uses expansion content, install that content on the destination before testing the save. This avoids confusing a content mismatch with an account or upload problem.
Original Nintendo Switch cloud-save users
The Nintendo Switch version previously offered GOG or Steam cloud-save integration. Those older cloud saves do not by themselves provide the current transfer route to other platforms. CD PROJEKT RED introduced Cross Progression in update 4.04; players who relied on the earlier integration must use Cross Progression to carry saves over.
On an accessible original Switch, update the game, connect the CD PROJEKT RED account through My Rewards, and upload a newly created save with the cloud icon. The same account can then expose that save on Switch 2 or another supported platform. Do not assume that an old GOG or Steam integration automatically makes a local Switch save visible in the current Cross Progression list.

What if you no longer have the old console?
The old console is still available
Use it as the source device. Start the game there, enable Cross Progression, make the current save, and wait for the cloud icon to appear. Once the upload is confirmed, the destination can retrieve it with the same account.

The old console is gone and Cross Progression was never used
There is no documented manual recovery path for a local save that was never uploaded. CD PROJEKT RED states: “Unfortunately, we can’t assist with retrieving your saves.” This applies to the case in which the previous console is no longer accessible and Cross Progression had not been used.
Cross Progression had been used before
Sign in to the same CD PROJEKT RED account on the destination and check Load Game. A save that was uploaded previously may still be available even if the original console is no longer in your possession. The destination must still meet the edition, downloadable-content, and mod requirements.
The practical distinction is whether the save ever received the cloud icon. If it did, the destination can look for that uploaded copy. If it remained only in the old console’s local storage and that console cannot be accessed, changing platform profiles or installing a different edition cannot recreate the missing upload.

Modded saves and matching mod sets
For a modded game, Cross Progression compatibility depends on the enabled mod set rather than only on the save file. CD PROJEKT RED advises using the same enabled mods on both platforms. If a destination lacks a mod used by the save, or has an incompatible version or combination, the save may fail to load correctly.
- Record which mods are enabled before creating the upload.
- Enable the matching set on the destination before opening the transferred save.
- If the save does not load, test with the same mod configuration rather than repeatedly uploading different local saves.
- Do not assume that a cloud icon overrides mod incompatibility; it confirms upload, not that every destination configuration can run the save.
For an unmodded save, this particular matching-mod check does not add a requirement. For a modded save, however, verify the configuration on both installations before troubleshooting accounts or editions.
Remastered-version considerations
CD PROJEKT RED’s FAQ says existing The Witcher 3 saves are compatible with the Remastered version, but the skill overhaul resets skills. Your story and other save data may transfer while your skill allocation must be set again under the Remastered rules.
The same FAQ says Nintendo Switch owners can claim the Switch 2 Remastered version free once it is released. Release timing and regional eligibility can change, so check the current Nintendo eShop and CD PROJEKT RED announcement for your region before treating that entitlement as available. The Cross Progression steps above remain the relevant save-transfer workflow when the installed versions expose the feature.
A successful save transfer therefore does not necessarily mean that every character setting will look identical immediately. If the destination is a Remastered build, plan to review skills after loading and distinguish that expected overhaul from a genuine save-loading failure.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The destination does not show the save
- Verify that both installations are signed in to exactly the same CD PROJEKT RED account. A different email address or account can produce an empty-looking Load Game list.
- Return to the source and confirm that the save was created through the Cross Progression control, not only through an ordinary local-save command.
- Check for the cloud icon beside the source save. Without it, the upload was not visibly confirmed.
- On the destination, open My Rewards before checking Load Game, so the account connection is active in that installation.
- Compare the source and destination editions and installed expansions. A content mismatch can prevent a save from loading even when the upload succeeded.
The cloud icon never appears
Confirm that the source game is fully updated, that the CD PROJEKT RED account connection completed, and that Cross Progression is enabled under Options → Gameplay → Cross Progression. Then create a new save using the Cross Progression control at the bottom right of Load Game. An older save made before account connection is not the visible upload confirmation.
The save appears but will not load
- Check whether a Complete Edition save is being opened in a base-game installation. Install the required expansions and downloadable content or use a compatible Complete installation.
- Check whether the two console installations are different products, such as base and GOTY/Complete. Local saves between those variants are not compatible.
- For a modded save, match the enabled mod set on both platforms.
- If moving to a Remastered version, expect the skill overhaul to reset skills even though existing saves are supported according to the FAQ.
You uploaded the wrong save
Cross Progression exposes the latest save for each save type. Return to the source platform, load the intended point, create a new Cross Progression save, and wait for the cloud icon. Make that deliberate save before changing platforms so the destination does not receive an unintended newer or older state.
You are checking the wrong installation
Verify that the destination launch tile is the same product family you checked for compatibility. A base, GOTY, Complete, or Remastered installation may present different local save behavior. Reconnect the account through My Rewards in the installation you actually intend to play, then check its Load Game screen.

- Update the source installation and note the patch shown beneath the title on the main menu.
- Connect the CD PROJEKT RED account through My Rewards on both platforms.
- Use one account consistently; Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, and other platform identities do not substitute for the linked CD PROJEKT RED account.
- Enable Cross Progression under Options → Gameplay if you need to verify its status.
- Create a fresh save with the Cross Progression control in Load Game.
- Confirm the cloud icon before leaving the source platform.
- Check edition, expansions, downloadable content, and enabled mods on the destination.
- Retrieve the save from Load Game, not from a file browser or a manual storage-copy process.
- Keep the source accessible until the cloud icon confirms the intended save, especially when moving a save for the first time.
- After loading on the destination, confirm that the expected story point and content are present before starting new progress there.
What the process does not do
Cross Progression does not make every local save interchangeable across every edition. It does not repair a save that requires missing expansions or downloadable content, and it does not make mismatched mod configurations safe. It also cannot upload a save from a console that is no longer accessible if Cross Progression was never enabled there.

It is also not a general-purpose file-management system. The supported workflow is tied to the game’s account connection, Cross Progression save control, cloud-icon confirmation, and destination Load Game menu. A transfer cable, storage accessory, repair utility, or consumable is not part of the documented process.
When the source is available and the content is compatible, however, the workflow is straightforward: link the account, create the intended save, verify the cloud icon, and load that save on the destination.

If Cross Progression was already used, sign in to the same CD PROJEKT RED account and check Load Game for the uploaded save. If the save was never uploaded and the old console is inaccessible, CD PROJEKT RED says it cannot assist with retrieving it.
