What you need before starting
Prepare both phones before you begin. The transfer is designed for an iPhone that still contains your WhatsApp history and a new Android phone that will use the same phone number. Google Android Help states: “You must use the same phone number on the new device as the old device.”

- The old iPhone: Keep WhatsApp installed and leave its chats and media intact until the transfer is verified.
- The new Android phone: Charge it, connect it to a network, and have a Google Account ready. Google says an account is required to download WhatsApp and transfer chats.
- The same phone number: The Android phone must be activated with the number used by WhatsApp on the iPhone.
- A compatible cable: Google’s documented route uses the old iPhone’s charging/data cable. If the connectors do not match the Android phone, use a suitable adapter. Cable and port combinations differ, so match both ends to the actual phones.
- Time and storage: Keep the phones near one another and connected to power if the history is large. No official fixed transfer duration or success rate is published, so do not plan around a guaranteed number of minutes.
Do not erase the iPhone, delete WhatsApp, or remove its data before the Android transfer finishes. WhatsApp’s Help Center specifically advises keeping the old phone’s data until completion.
Choose the correct transfer route

The QR pairing screen does not by itself prove that every wireless migration method copies WhatsApp chats. Availability depends on the Android model, software version, transfer mode, and the prompt displayed during setup.

Transfer chats during initial Android setup
Use this procedure when the Android phone has not completed its first-time setup.
- Start Android setup. Turn on the Android phone, connect it to a network, and sign in to a Google Account when Android requests it.
- Open the copy-data screen. At Copy apps and data, choose the option to copy from an iPhone or iPad. Android may show slightly different wording on different manufacturers’ devices.
- Select apps and check WhatsApp. Choose Apps in the content selection screen. Check whether WhatsApp appears in the list of transferable apps or data.
- Connect the phones. Plug the old iPhone’s charging/data cable into the phones, using an adapter if the Android connector requires one. Keep both devices unlocked and close together.
- Approve the iPhone connection. When the iPhone asks whether to trust the connected device, tap Trust and enter the iPhone passcode if requested.
- Scan Android’s QR code. Android displays a QR code for the WhatsApp handoff. Use the iPhone camera to scan it. If Android presents a WhatsApp-specific instruction, follow that instruction rather than leaving the setup flow.
- Use WhatsApp’s iPhone transfer screen if requested. Google documents the fallback path as WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Transfer chat history > Transfer to Android on the iPhone, followed by Start or Start transfer when shown.
- Wait for completion. Leave the cable connected and do not open WhatsApp on Android while the transfer is running. The phones may continue copying other selected data after WhatsApp finishes.
- Sign in on Android. After the transfer reports completion, open WhatsApp on Android and verify it with the same phone number used on the iPhone.
Opening WhatsApp on the new Android phone too early can replace the expected transfer state or create new local data. Google specifically warns users to complete the transfer before opening WhatsApp.
Transfer chats when Android setup is already complete
Post-setup migration is less consistent because Android manufacturers expose different tools and may limit when an iPhone transfer can be started.

- Search Android Settings. Look for Accounts and backup > Android Switch > Transfer WhatsApp chats or Copy data using Android Switch. The exact labels and location vary by Android version and manufacturer.
- Read the reset warning. Some devices require a factory reset to return to the copy-data stage. A reset erases data already stored on the Android phone, so back up anything important before accepting it.
- Check the post-setup window. Google gives a 3–7 day window after initial setup for restoring iPhone chats on some devices. Treat that as Google’s stated guidance, not a universal guarantee for every handset.
- Use the same connection sequence. Follow the cable, iPhone Trust, QR scan, and WhatsApp prompts shown by the phone.
- For Samsung phones, open Smart Switch. Google directs Samsung users to Accounts and backup > Transfer data for device setup. Follow Smart Switch’s prompts for the iPhone-to-Android copy.
- Install WhatsApp only at the requested stage. If Android already has WhatsApp configured, stop and repair that state before trying again.
If no Android Switch or copy-data option appears, the phone may require a reset and a new setup, or it may not support the post-setup route. Do not repeatedly erase the phone without first confirming that the manufacturer’s instructions provide a supported path.
Using a wireless transfer
Wireless Android Switch is not available on every Android model. Google’s current guidance requires iOS 15 or later for the wireless route, and the phones must remain near each other. Google also says only certain devices support Wi-Fi transfer.
- Use the wireless option only when Android explicitly offers it during setup.
- Keep Wi-Fi enabled on both phones, keep them close, and prevent either phone from sleeping during the handoff.
- Confirm that the transfer screen names WhatsApp or WhatsApp history. A general contact, photo, or app copy screen is not evidence that chat history will be included.
- If wireless transfer is unavailable, slow, or repeatedly fails, switch to the cable method. Google recommends a cable in that situation.
- iOS 14 or earlier cannot use Google’s wireless Android Switch route according to Google’s troubleshooting guidance, although cable transfer can remain possible.
WhatsApp’s Help Center describes a local Wi-Fi transfer sequence in which the iPhone prepares the chat history, the Android phone uses the same number, and the iPhone scans a QR code. WhatsApp says data transferred through local Wi-Fi does not go to cloud storage. Follow the specific prompts shown by your phones because the available implementation depends on the Android device.

What the cable and QR handoff are doing
The cable establishes the device-to-device copy session used by Google’s documented migration flow. The QR code links the WhatsApp transfer request on Android with the WhatsApp data prepared on the iPhone. The QR step is an authorization handoff, not a replacement for the Android setup or the same-number requirement.

Connector mismatches are common. An iPhone cable may have a different plug at the Android end, and some older cables or adapters support charging but not reliable data transfer. If Android does not detect the iPhone, unplug both ends, reconnect firmly, and use an adapter or cable that supports data. Do not assume that buying any cable guarantees a successful migration.
Storage, media and app preparation
The Android phone needs enough free storage for the WhatsApp data selected for transfer. If setup reports insufficient space, Google recommends deselecting other data types, especially photos and videos, which generally consume more storage. This can let the WhatsApp portion proceed without first copying unrelated content.

Keep the iPhone’s WhatsApp data available until you have inspected the Android copy. Do not treat the presence of the WhatsApp icon as proof that the history transferred; sign in, open several conversations, and check representative media before deleting anything from the iPhone.

The QR code will not scan
- Open the iPhone Camera app and make sure camera access is permitted.
- Clean the camera lens and hold the phone far enough away for the entire QR code to fit in view.
- Make sure both phones have network access and remain near one another.
- For wireless Android Switch, confirm that the iPhone is running iOS 15 or later.
- If scanning still fails, return to the transfer screen and use the cable route.
Android does not show WhatsApp
Return to the content-selection screen and choose Apps. WhatsApp may be listed only after the iPhone is connected and trusted. If the Android phone is already configured, look for the WhatsApp-specific Android Switch option in Settings; post-setup availability varies.
WhatsApp was opened on Android before the transfer
Google’s troubleshooting guidance says to uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp or clear its storage before attempting the transfer again. Back up any unrelated Android data first, then restart the supported transfer flow. Do not open the newly installed WhatsApp until Android tells you the copy is complete.

The cable connection fails
- Reconnect both ends and unlock the iPhone.
- Tap Trust on the iPhone and enter its passcode.
- Try a different data-capable cable or the appropriate USB adapter.
- Check that the connectors fit fully and are free of debris.
- Restart both phones if Android still cannot detect the iPhone, then begin the transfer from the supported setup screen.
There is not enough storage
Free space on Android, or deselect other categories in the copy screen. Google specifically suggests deselecting photos and videos. Recheck the available space before starting WhatsApp again.
No transfer option appears after setup
Search Settings for Android Switch, copy data, or transfer WhatsApp chats. Menus differ by manufacturer and Android version. If the phone offers no supported post-setup route, a factory reset and a fresh setup may be required. Samsung users should use Smart Switch as directed by Google.
The iPhone is managed by an organization
Google warns that WhatsApp transfer may be unavailable on devices with enterprise certificates. A work-managed iPhone can therefore fail even when a personal iPhone with the same iOS version would transfer normally. Contact the device administrator before removing management controls.
How to verify the result safely
- Open WhatsApp on Android only after the transfer completion message appears.
- Verify the same phone number used on the iPhone.
- Open several recent and older conversations.
- Check group memberships, message search, and representative photos or videos that matter to you.
- Send a test message only after the imported history is visible and the account is working normally.
- Keep the iPhone untouched until these checks are complete and you have decided that the Android copy is sufficient.
The migration process does not publish a guaranteed success percentage or a universal completion time. Verification on the actual Android phone is therefore more reliable than assuming that a finished setup screen means every item you expected is present.

- Transfer complete? Verify conversations and media before changing or deleting anything on the iPhone.
