There is no Nintendo Switch setting that transfers every demo save automatically. Demo-to-full-game carryover is implemented by each game, so the required save, update, menu and timing steps vary by title. Check the publisher’s current support instructions for the exact game before deleting the demo or starting over.
Some games detect an eligible demo save when you launch the full version. Others require you to create a manual save in the demo first, update the full game, or select a carryover option. Nintendo’s system-level save transfer is a separate console-to-console feature and does not make an incompatible demo work with a full game.

What you need to verify first
Before buying or launching the full game, identify the exact title, region and version of the demo. Search the publisher’s support page, manual or FAQ for phrases such as “demo save data,” “carry over” and “transfer.” A procedure that works for one Switch game may be completely wrong for another.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Confirm explicit support. Look for a statement that the Nintendo Switch demo can transfer to the Nintendo Switch full game. Do not infer support from the fact that a demo and full release share a title.
- Keep the demo save intact. If the instructions require a manual save, create it before closing the demo. Do not delete the demo or overwrite its save while you are still checking the requirements.
- Check the full game’s version. Some publishers require the latest update before the import option appears.
- Expect an in-game process. The import may happen automatically, through a launch prompt, or from a menu. Nintendo’s general save settings do not provide a universal demo-import command.
- Check region and release notes. Patches, regional releases and later updates can change how a title detects or imports demo data. Use instructions for your edition of the game.
Also note what the publisher says about save slots. A title may carry one active profile, a specifically created manual slot, or every slot. Unless the instructions say otherwise, do not assume that a quick-resume point, autosave or every profile will be recognized. Write down the save slot you intend to carry over so you can identify it in the full game.

The title-specific process
Use this sequence as a safe framework, then substitute the exact requirements from the game’s official instructions.
- Find the publisher’s current instructions. Search the official support site or the game’s manual for the exact title and “demo save data,” “carry over” or “transfer.” Record any requirement for a manual save, update, account, region or particular save slot.
- Make the required save in the demo. If the publisher says the demo must contain a manual save, perform that save and wait for the game to confirm it. An automatically created checkpoint may not qualify.
- Leave the demo data available. Keep the demo installed and avoid deleting its software or initializing its save while you test the full version. The full game must be able to detect the data in the manner specified by its publisher.
- Update the full game when directed. Connect the console to the internet and install the game’s current update if the publisher lists one as a prerequisite. Do not assume that launching an unpatched cartridge or download will show the import option.
- Launch the full game and follow its prompt. Read every screen carefully. The game may detect the demo data at startup, offer a “Carry over” choice, or place the command in a main-menu item.
- Check the scope of the transfer. If the instructions mention all save-data slots, expect a multi-slot transfer; if they identify one manual save, select or create that slot in the demo. Do not choose a new-game or overwrite command until you understand which data is being imported.
- Verify the result before changing anything. Load the transferred profile or save slot and check the expected progress. Confirm that the full game opens the correct chapter, character, inventory or other progress that the title says it carries over. Keep the original demo installed until you know the full-game save is usable.
- Stop if the option is missing. Do not delete the demo, overwrite a full-game slot or repeatedly start new saves. Recheck the manual-save requirement, game update, title and region, then contact the publisher if its instructions do not resolve the mismatch.
Timing can matter even when a title supports carryover. If a game says the full version detects demo data at launch, close and relaunch after updating rather than assuming an earlier session will refresh itself. If the game places the command in its main menu, let the title finish loading and inspect that menu instead of looking only at the first startup screen. Follow the wording on your screen; do not substitute a similarly named command from another game.

These examples should be read as comparisons, not as a compatibility list. HARVESTELLA confirms support but leaves the button sequence to the game’s instructions. Monster Hunter Stories 2 makes a manual bed save the key preparation step and places the transfer command in the full game’s main menu. Echoes of Aincrad emphasizes updating first and then selecting a prompt, and it explicitly says every save-data slot transfers. Those differences are exactly why a generic walkthrough is unsafe.
HARVESTELLA
Square Enix’s support FAQ answers yes to the question of carrying Nintendo Switch demo save data into the full game. It does not publish a detailed button-by-button sequence in the cited material. Start the current full version and use the instructions displayed by the game rather than importing steps from another title.
Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin
Capcom’s instructions require a manual save slot in the demo. The specified route is to visit the player’s room and save at the bed. Once that save exists, an option should automatically appear on the full game’s main menu to transfer the data. If you only played to an automatic checkpoint, return to the demo and create the required manual save before troubleshooting the full version.

Echoes of Aincrad
Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe requires the main game to be updated to the latest version. When the full game detects demo data, choose “Carry over” from the prompt. The instructions state that all save-data slots are transferred. They also explain that a player who launched the full game before applying the update can still transfer the demo data after updating later.

How to compare another game’s instructions
When you find a support page for a different title, extract the same five facts before acting:
- Support: Does the publisher explicitly confirm demo-to-full carryover for Nintendo Switch?
- Preparation: Must you create a manual save, and does the page name a location or save slot?
- Version: Must the full game be updated, and does the instruction say what happens if you started it earlier?
- Trigger: Is importing automatic, offered in a startup prompt, or selected from a main menu?
- Scope: Does the publisher describe one save, a profile or all save-data slots?
If a support page does not answer one of these questions, treat that detail as unknown rather than filling it in from another game. The absence of a listed manual-save step does not prove that an autosave is sufficient; it only means the cited instructions do not state an additional step.
What to do when no carryover option appears
A missing prompt does not prove that the game is incompatible, but it is a reason to stop and check the prerequisites instead of experimenting with destructive actions.
Check that the demo save is the right kind
Some games require a deliberate manual save rather than a quick resume point or automatic checkpoint. Reopen the demo and perform the exact save action described by the publisher. In the Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin example, that means saving at the bed in the player’s room.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Confirm that you opened the correct title
Check the game name, edition and region shown on the HOME menu and software information screen. A demo and full release with similar names, a different regional edition or a different platform version may not share the same transfer path.
Read the full menu, not just the first launch screen
Some games detect demo data at startup; others expose the command in a main menu after the title has loaded. Look for wording such as “Carry over,” “Transfer save data” or “Import demo save.” Do not select a new-game or overwrite option until you know which slot contains the imported data.
Allow the game to rescan after an update
Quit the full game completely after installing an update and start it again. This is a practical way to ensure the title performs its normal detection step, but it is not a universal Nintendo requirement; use it only alongside the publisher’s directions. If the game says the transfer remains available after a later update, an earlier launch does not automatically mean the opportunity is lost.
Protect both saves while investigating
Do not delete the demo, initialize the full-game save or accept an overwrite warning simply to make the prompt appear. The available publisher instructions do not establish a universal recovery procedure when a demo save has been deleted or replaced. If the official steps are satisfied and the option remains absent, use the game publisher’s support channel with the title, version, region and exact steps already attempted.
Demo transfer is different from Nintendo’s console-to-console save transfer
Nintendo’s Transfer Your Save Data feature moves compatible software saves from one Switch console to another. It is designed for moving a save between hardware, not for converting a demo save into a full-game save.
Requirements for a nearby console transfer
Nintendo’s instructions require both consoles to be available, an internet connection, nearby consoles and the same Nintendo Account linked to a user on each system. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required for this nearby transfer.

Important deletion and overwrite behavior
After a successful send, Nintendo deletes the source console’s save for that software. If the target already contains a save, you can cancel or choose to overwrite it; Nintendo warns that overwritten data cannot be recovered. These warnings apply to console-to-console movement and do not indicate that a demo can be imported into an unrelated full-game save.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsReplacing a console is another separate procedure
Nintendo also documents a user-and-save transfer for replacing a console. That process is different from both nearby save transfer and a game’s demo-to-full carryover. Choose the system-transfer instructions only when your actual goal is moving a user and compatible saves to replacement hardware.
Do not open the console-transfer menu as a troubleshooting step for a missing demo prompt. It cannot add a game-specific import command, and its source-save deletion rule is unrelated to the demo and full-game versions installed on one system.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a microSD card will not transfer the save
Switch game saves are stored in the console’s system memory. Nintendo says they cannot be saved or copied to a microSD card. A card can hold downloadable game software and other data, but moving the demo’s files to a card will not create a demo-to-full import and is not a substitute for the publisher’s in-game process.
A practical checklist before you buy or delete anything
- Write down the exact game title, edition, region and current software version.
- Read the publisher’s support page or manual for demo carryover requirements.
- Keep the demo installed and its save untouched until the full-game import succeeds.
- Create a manual demo save if the title requires one.
- Install the full game’s latest update when instructed.
- Launch the full game and look for the title’s own prompt or menu command.
- Check every save slot if the title says multiple slots transfer.
- Verify the transferred progress before deleting the demo.
- Do not use microSD copying or Nintendo’s console-transfer menu for a software-level demo-import problem.
Questions the official examples cannot answer universally
There is no published statistic establishing what percentage of Switch demos support carryover, how often transfers fail or how many titles use each import method. There is also no complete compatibility list or universal cross-region rule in the cited official material. Treat compatibility as a title-by-title claim and verify it against the current publisher instructions for your release.
The safest rule is simple: preserve the demo save, update the full game when required, and follow the exact prompt supplied by that game. A successful console-to-console transfer or a microSD copy cannot replace a title’s own demo-carryover support.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can every Nintendo Switch demo save be transferred to the full game?
No. Carryover is a title-specific feature. Use the game publisher’s current FAQ, manual or support page to confirm that the Nintendo Switch demo and full release support it.
Do I need to make a manual save in the demo?
Only when that game’s instructions require one. Capcom’s Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin instructions require a manual save at the bed in the player’s room; an automatic checkpoint may not qualify. Other titles can specify different conditions.
What if I started the full game before updating it?
Install the latest version and relaunch the game if the publisher requires an update. Bandai Namco’s Echoes of Aincrad instructions specifically say the demo can still be transferred after a player started the full game, provided the main game is updated.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does Nintendo Switch Online transfer a demo save?
No universal Nintendo Switch Online setting performs demo-to-full imports. Nintendo’s nearby Transfer Your Save Data feature is for moving compatible saves between two consoles, and Nintendo says a membership is not required for that nearby transfer.
Can I copy the demo save to a microSD card?
No. Nintendo says Switch game saves are stored in system memory and cannot be saved or copied to a microSD card. Use the title’s own in-game carryover process instead.
What should I do if the carryover prompt is missing?
Stop before deleting or overwriting anything. Confirm the exact title and region, create any required manual demo save, update the full game, relaunch it and inspect its main menu. If the official steps are satisfied and no option appears, contact the publisher with the version and steps you tried.
The Bottom Line
There is no universal Switch demo-transfer command. Confirm support for the exact game, preserve the required demo save, update the full version when directed, and use that title’s prompt or menu. Keep the demo until the imported progress is verified. Nintendo’s console-transfer tool and microSD storage rules address different problems and cannot replace game-specific carryover support.
