Treat the final confirmation as permanent: the Pokémon GO Help Center states that you cannot get Pokémon back after transferring them.
Before confirming, check the Pokémon’s details, labels, and any notes you use to mark valuable specimens. Favorite anything you want protected, and process batches only after reviewing every selected Pokémon. Transferring awards Candy, but it is not a storage shortcut with an undo button.

What a Professor Willow transfer actually does
A transfer removes the Pokémon from Pokémon GO and sends it to Professor Willow in exchange for Candy. The action is irreversible. Niantic’s official wording is direct: “you can’t get Pokémon back after you’ve transferred them.” There is no recovery window or documented undo feature to rely on if you confirm the wrong choice.
This is different from sending a Pokémon to Pokémon HOME and different again from trading with another player. Those options have their own eligibility rules and consequences, but none can restore a Pokémon that has already been transferred to the Professor.

Use a deliberate definition of important
Important does not have to mean rare. A Pokémon may matter because of its stats, a useful move set, a personal memory, a costume, a lucky or purified status, a place in a collection, or a role in a future evolution. Decide your own keep rules before clearing storage so that the decision is not made while tapping quickly through a crowded list.
Put a visible safeguard in place
Pokémon GO’s favorite function is the simplest in-app lock. Favorited Pokémon cannot be transferred through the documented transfer process. Favorite a Pokémon as soon as you decide it is a keeper, not after selecting a large group. Favoriting is a safeguard, not a substitute for reviewing a batch: you should still inspect the final selection before confirming.
Safety checks before you select Transfer
Inspect the individual Pokémon
Open the Pokémon’s detail screen and look at the information you use to identify it. Check its name, species, form, costume or other visual distinction, labels, and personal notes. If you use labels to separate raid, collection, trade, or evolution candidates, make sure those labels are current before deleting anything.

- Favorited Pokémon: the transfer option is blocked.
- Your active Buddy: remove it from the active Buddy slot before attempting a transfer.
- Pokémon defending Gyms: it must stop defending the Gym before it can be transferred.
If Transfer is unavailable, one of these conditions is a likely explanation. Clear the condition, return to the Pokémon’s details, and inspect the selection again rather than repeatedly tapping the same control.
Separate keepers from expendable Pokémon
Do not use a single visual pass for every species. First identify Pokémon that must be kept, favorite them, and apply whatever labels or notes help you recognize them. Then return to the remaining list and choose only Pokémon whose loss you would accept permanently. This two-pass method is slower than tapping every duplicate, but it prevents a rare form or sentimental Pokémon from being mixed into a disposal group.
How to transfer one Pokémon safely
- From the Map View, open the Main Menu.
- Tap Pokémon to open your storage.
- Select the Pokémon you are considering.
- Review the detail screen, including labels and notes that explain why you might keep it. Confirm that it is not favorited, your active Buddy, or defending a Gym.
- Open the Pokémon’s menu and choose Transfer.
- Read the confirmation prompt. Confirm only when you are certain that this Pokémon is expendable, because the transfer cannot be undone.
The Help Center says players receive Candy for a transfer. The Candy reward does not change the permanence of the action, so use the reward as a consequence of a decision you have already made, not as the reason to rush.
How to transfer multiple Pokémon at once
Batch transfer is useful for clearing ordinary duplicates, but it increases the cost of a mistake because several Pokémon disappear together. Build the group gradually and review it before the final confirmation.

- Open the Pokémon list from the Main Menu.
- Press and hold the first Pokémon until it becomes selected.
- Tap each additional Pokémon you intend to include.
- When the group is complete, tap Transfer.
- Review the selected set one more time. Remove anything that is a keeper, a collection piece, or a Pokémon whose identity you have not verified.
- Confirm only after the final review.
The selection screen is the last practical checkpoint. Niantic documents no recovery period after confirmation, so a mistaken batch cannot be rolled back by reopening the list.
Batch-transfer restrictions

The restrictions above apply to the documented in-app transfer process. App labels and menus can change, so follow the warning and confirmation text shown by your current version rather than assuming that every species follows the same rule.
Why Transfer may be missing or disabled
The Pokémon is favorited
A favorite is an intentional lock. If you expected to delete the Pokémon, first decide whether the favorite was accidental or whether your keep rule has changed. Removing the favorite makes a transfer possible only after every other applicable restriction has been cleared; it does not make the transfer reversible.

The Pokémon is your active Buddy
The active Buddy cannot be transferred. Change the active Buddy, then reopen the Pokémon’s detail page. A Buddy’s friendship status also matters for batches: multiple Buddy Pokémon at Good Buddy status or above cannot be selected together.

The Pokémon is defending a Gym
A Gym defender is blocked until it is no longer defending. The transfer control is not a way to remove a defender remotely. Once the defender returns, inspect it again because its status may be part of the reason you wanted to keep it.
You selected a restricted group
If a batch contains multiple Legendary or Mythical Pokémon, enable the applicable setting first. If it contains multiple Shiny, Lucky, or Good Buddy-or-higher Buddy Pokémon, split the group according to the app’s rules. A blocked batch is a prompt to narrow the selection, not a reason to disable safeguards indiscriminately.
You are trying to transfer a protected species
Some Legendary and Mythical Pokémon cannot be selected for transfer at all; Mew and Celebi are examples listed by the Help Center. If the Pokémon cannot be selected, there is no standard transfer workflow that overrides that protection.
Professor transfer versus Pokémon HOME
Sending a Pokémon to Pokémon HOME is a separate process inside Pokémon GO. It is not a safer version of Professor transfer and it is not a temporary holding area. The movement is one-way from Pokémon GO: Niantic says Pokémon sent to HOME cannot return to Pokémon GO.
How the HOME route works
- Link your Pokémon GO and Pokémon HOME accounts before attempting to send anything.
- Use the GO Transporter to choose an eligible Pokémon.
- Check the Transporter’s energy requirement for that Pokémon. The amount depends on the Pokémon.
- Review the confirmation screen for eligibility and any form or status warning.
- Send the Pokémon, then open Pokémon HOME and accept the incoming Pokémon. It appears in your HOME Boxes only after it has been accepted there.
Pokémon that cannot be sent to HOME
The HOME route has its own exclusions. The following are listed as ineligible:
- Favorited Pokémon
- Buddy Pokémon
- Pokémon defending Gyms
- Costumed Pokémon
- Shadow Pokémon
- Mega-Evolved Pokémon
Removing a favorite or changing an active Buddy does not remove the other HOME restrictions. Check the Pokémon itself and the confirmation screen before spending Transporter energy.
Status and form consequences
Lucky and Purified Pokémon lose those statuses when sent to HOME. Some forms also change. The confirmation screen indicates whether a Pokémon will change form, so read that screen rather than assuming its appearance and status will be preserved. Once sent, it cannot be returned to Pokémon GO, even if the resulting form or status is not what you expected.

Is trading a safer alternative?
Trading can move an eligible Pokémon to another player, but it is a separate feature rather than an undo function. The players must be physically near each other. Traded Pokémon can have different CP, HP, and other stats afterward, so a trade does not preserve the exact competitive profile you saw before sending it.
Some Pokémon cannot be traded. The official trading guidance specifically includes Mythical Pokémon such as Mew and Pokémon that have already been traded. If you have already transferred a Pokémon to Professor Willow, trading cannot bring it back; the transfer is final before any trade could be arranged.
A practical storage-clearing routine
Pass one: protect known keepers
- Search through the storage list for Pokémon you recognize as valuable or sentimental.
- Inspect their details and verify labels or personal notes.
- Favorite every keeper before selecting anything for transfer.
- Check whether a favorite is also a Buddy, Gym defender, or candidate for HOME; each destination has separate restrictions.
Pass two: build a narrow transfer group
- Start with ordinary, clearly expendable Pokémon rather than rare or unusual forms.
- Press and hold the first Pokémon, then add others one at a time.
- Stop when the group contains only Pokémon you would willingly lose permanently.
- Keep Legendary, Mythical, Shiny, Lucky, and high-friendship Buddy Pokémon out of the batch unless the app explicitly permits the exact action you intend.
Pass three: verify the final screen
- Look at every selected thumbnail and name.
- Remove anything you cannot identify with confidence.
- Confirm that you are using the intended destination: Professor Willow transfer and Pokémon HOME are not interchangeable.
- Read the final warning and confirm only after accepting that the action cannot be undone.
What to do after a mistake
If you notice the mistake before confirmation, cancel the prompt and remove the Pokémon from the selection. If you have already confirmed a Professor transfer, the official guidance provides no recovery path: the Pokémon cannot be returned. Do not expect a later trade, HOME transfer, or support request to reverse it.
If a Pokémon sent to HOME is not visible immediately, check that it has been accepted in Pokémon HOME; Niantic says it does not appear in your HOME Boxes until that acceptance step is complete. If the confirmation screen warned about a form change or status loss, compare the Pokémon in HOME with that warning rather than assuming the transfer failed.
