Pokémon GO blocks transfers of favorited Pokémon, but transfers sent to Professor Willow are permanent: Niantic says “you can’t get Pokémon back after you’ve transferred them.”
The safest approach is to use the single-Pokémon transfer flow when you are uncertain, and reserve bulk transfer for clearly reviewed groups. If storage is full, an in-game storage upgrade is the non-destructive alternative.

What a Pokémon GO transfer actually does
The ordinary Transfer command removes a Pokémon from your Pokémon storage and sends it to Professor Willow. In return, the game awards Candy and frees a storage slot. It is not a temporary archive, and it is not the same as moving a Pokémon between accounts.

Transfer is irreversible. Once the confirmation is accepted, the transferred Pokémon cannot be recovered through a normal in-game undo command. Treat the final confirmation as permanent deletion from your collection.

The Candy reward should not influence a rushed decision. Candy is the benefit of releasing the Pokémon, not a replacement for it, and receiving Candy does not create a copy or backup. If the Pokémon has a useful move, unusual form, event costume, trade value, or personal meaning, decide whether that value matters before you open the transfer menu.
Plan your cleanup before selecting anything
A short preparation pass makes an irreversible action much safer. Start with the Pokémon you definitely want to retain, rather than starting with the entries you think you can discard.
- Mark keepers first. Favorite rare, event, regional, high-stat, costume, evolution, trade, and sentimental Pokémon.
- Separate uncertain entries. If you have not decided whether a Pokémon is useful, leave it out of the discard group.
- Decide whether you need Candy. Transfer is permanent, so do not release a Pokémon merely because the storage warning is inconvenient.
- Choose the smallest safe operation. Use single transfer for anything you might regret losing; use bulk transfer only for a clearly verified group.
- Check the final list again. A keeper can be tapped accidentally during a bulk-selection session even after an earlier review.
Favorite status is a safeguard, not a substitute for judgment. It protects marked Pokémon from the transfer action, but it cannot identify an unfavorited Pokémon that you later realize was important.
Why favorites are your primary safety lock
A favorited Pokémon cannot be transferred under Pokémon GO’s documented rules. The favorite marker is therefore the most important protection for anything you intend to keep, such as a rare species, a high-stat attacker, a costume, a regional Pokémon, a useful evolution candidate, or a personal favorite.
Favorite status is a block against the transfer action, not a substitute for reviewing your collection. Before sorting, open each keeper’s details and turn on the star-shaped favorite control. If you are cleaning up a large box, mark keepers first and only then begin selecting candidates for transfer.
How to favorite a keeper
- From the Map View, open the Main Menu.
- Tap Pokémon to open your storage.
- Select the Pokémon you want to protect.
- On its detail screen, tap the favorite control so the Pokémon is marked as a favorite.
- Return to your list and check that every intended keeper has the favorite marker before selecting anything for transfer.
If you are sorting with another person, do not assume they know which entries matter. Favorite the Pokémon yourself, and pause before any shared-device bulk action. A quick visual check of the star on each keeper is safer than relying on memory.
How to transfer one Pokémon safely
The single-Pokémon flow is the clearest option when a Pokémon has sentimental value, unusual attributes, or any uncertainty attached to it. Only one entry is placed under consideration, which makes the final review easier to understand.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open the Main Menu from the Map View.
- Tap Pokémon.
- Tap the Pokémon you intend to transfer.
- Open the Pokémon’s detail-screen menu.
- Choose Transfer.
- Read the confirmation message and verify that the displayed Pokémon is the one you mean to remove.
- Confirm only when you accept that the transfer is permanent.
The Candy reward does not create a backup. It is the result of the transfer, while the Pokémon itself leaves your storage. If the confirmation gives you any reason to hesitate, cancel that decision and return to the list instead of assuming you can fix it later.
How to transfer several Pokémon at once
Bulk transfer is faster, but the risk is selection error: one unintended tap can add a keeper to the group. Use it only after deciding exactly which Pokémon belong in the discard set.

- Touch and hold one Pokémon until it becomes selected.
- Tap each additional Pokémon you intend to transfer.
- Review the entire selected group before touching Transfer. Scroll through the selection if necessary and remove any uncertain entry.
- Tap Transfer, read the confirmation screen, and confirm only after the list still matches your plan.
If one selection makes you hesitate, do not “trust the batch.” Remove that Pokémon from the selection or leave it for the single-Pokémon flow. The operation cannot be rolled back after confirmation.
A practical bulk-transfer review
- Check the species, form, costume, and visual appearance of every selected Pokémon.
- Look for high appraisal results, legacy moves, event markings, or other traits you planned to retain.
- Confirm that no selected Pokémon is a duplicate you meant to keep for evolution, trading, or collection goals.
- Check that a selected Pokémon is not your active Buddy or defending a Gym.
- Inspect the selection again immediately before confirmation, even if you already reviewed it while tapping entries.
Bulk transfer is a convenience, not a different kind of deletion. Every Pokémon in the confirmed group is sent away together, and there is no recovery advantage over transferring one at a time.

Restrictions that can stop a transfer
Some Pokémon cannot be transferred in particular circumstances. These rules are also useful warning signs: if the game blocks an action, stop and reassess rather than trying to bypass the message.
Always-blocked situations listed by Niantic
- Your active Buddy cannot be transferred.
- A favorited Pokémon cannot be transferred.
- A Pokémon currently defending a Gym cannot be transferred.
To transfer a Buddy, first change your active Buddy. To transfer a Gym defender, it must no longer be assigned to that Gym. Do not unfavorite a Pokémon merely to make a bulk action possible unless you have independently decided that it is disposable. Removing a safety marker just to complete a batch defeats the purpose of the review.
Special rules for bulk transfers
Bulk selection has category-specific limits. You cannot transfer multiple Shiny Pokémon, multiple Lucky Pokémon, or multiple Pokémon at Good Buddy status or above in one operation. This is a restriction on transferring several at once; it does not mean that every individual Pokémon in those categories is permanently untransferable. If you are certain an individual entry should go, use the single-Pokémon flow and follow the confirmation warning.
To transfer multiple Legendary or Mythical Pokémon, first enable the relevant option in the app’s settings. The setting is an explicit safeguard because these categories are easy to remove accidentally. Some Legendary and Mythical Pokémon, including Mew and Celebi, cannot be selected for transfer.
Do not interpret a blocked bulk action as permission to remove favorites or ignore a warning. The restriction may be telling you that the selected group contains a category that needs a slower, more deliberate decision.
Rules and menu labels can change with app updates. If your screen differs, read the current warning text rather than assuming that an old bulk-transfer habit still applies.
Single versus bulk transfer: which approach is safer?
| Approach | How it works | Main advantage | Main risk | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single Pokémon | Open one Pokémon’s detail menu and choose Transfer. | One item is visible at every decision point. | Slower when removing many obvious duplicates. | Rare entries, uncertain choices, or anything you would regret losing. |
| Bulk selection | Press and hold one list entry, tap more entries, then choose Transfer. | Efficient for a clearly reviewed discard group. | A mistaken tap can include a keeper; the whole confirmed group is permanent. | Large groups of ordinary, verified duplicates. |
| Storage expansion | Buy a Pokémon storage upgrade in the in-game Shop. | Creates room without deleting Pokémon. | Requires an in-game purchase; current pricing is not stated here. | When you need capacity but have not decided what to release. |
There is no recovery advantage to bulk transfer. The only difference is how many Pokémon are committed in one confirmation. Single transfer costs more time; bulk transfer demands more careful selection; an upgrade avoids the deletion decision but costs an in-game purchase.

What to do when Pokémon storage is full
Pokémon GO can display an orange-dot warning when Pokémon storage or the Item Bag is full. The dot is therefore not automatically a signal that Pokémon must be deleted: check which storage category is affected.
For a full Pokémon collection, Niantic lists two remedies: transfer Pokémon or purchase a storage upgrade in the in-game Shop.
Choose transfer when
- You have marked keepers as favorites and identified genuine duplicates.
- You have reviewed appraisal, moves, forms, costumes, and collection goals.
- You need Candy and are comfortable permanently removing the selected Pokémon.
Choose an upgrade when
- You are unsure whether a crowded group contains future keepers.
- You are holding event, regional, trade, or evolution candidates for later decisions.
- You need immediate space but cannot safely review the collection now.
The upgrade is an in-game Shop purchase, not a physical product or an external service. The available amount and price can vary by the offers shown in your account, so check the current Shop listing before buying. No external accessory or printed guide provides the favorite lock; the relevant safeguards are in the app itself.
Do not confuse Professor Willow transfers with Pokémon HOME
Sending a Pokémon to Professor Willow is the normal in-game transfer described above: the Pokémon leaves GO, Candy is awarded, and storage space is freed. Pokémon HOME is a separate export route with different consequences.
Niantic’s Pokémon HOME guidance says that Pokémon sent from GO to HOME cannot be sent back to GO. The HOME confirmation screen also indicates whether a Pokémon’s form changes during the journey. Favorites are among the Pokémon that cannot be sent through this route. Therefore, do not treat HOME as a backup or as an alternative undo mechanism.

A HOME export and a Willow transfer solve different problems: one moves an eligible Pokémon outward, while the other releases it for Candy and storage space.
A no-mistakes checklist before you confirm
- Protect keepers: Favorite every Pokémon you intend to retain before sorting.
- Separate decisions: Do not mix obvious duplicates with rare, event, trade, or appraisal candidates in one bulk selection.
- Check blocked states: Make sure a desired transfer is not your active Buddy or a Gym defender.
- Review category warnings: Remember the special limits for Shiny, Lucky, Good Buddy-or-higher, Legendary, and Mythical Pokémon.
- Inspect the selected list: Verify every Pokémon in a bulk group, not just the first and last entries.
- Check the action: Confirm that you are choosing the ordinary Transfer command, not an unrelated export flow.
- Read the confirmation: Pause on the final warning and confirm only when permanent removal is acceptable.
- Use single transfer when unsure: A slower decision is safer than an irreversible mistake.
If you transferred the wrong Pokémon
There is no documented in-game restore command. Niantic’s transfer guidance explicitly says that a transferred Pokémon cannot be recovered. Do not promise yourself that a later update, a trade, or Pokémon HOME will bring it back.
You can still contact Pokémon GO support if you need to report what happened. Niantic says the in-app support system is generally the best contact route:
- Open the Main Menu.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Help.
Support may review the report, but the available guidance does not establish that support will restore a Pokémon transferred by mistake. Describe the account, approximate time, and circumstances accurately, and do not rely on support as a safety net for future transfers. The safest recovery plan is prevention: favorite keepers and inspect the final confirmation every time.

Common questions answered precisely
Can you transfer a favorited Pokémon?
No. Niantic’s documented rules prevent a favorited Pokémon from being transferred. If a Pokémon is not meant to leave your collection, keep it favorited and verify the marker before any cleanup session.
Can you get a Pokémon back after transferring it?
No normal recovery path is documented. A confirmed transfer to Professor Willow is permanent, so the decision must be made before confirmation.
Why is the Transfer option unavailable?
The Pokémon may be your active Buddy, favorited, or defending a Gym. It may also fall under a bulk-transfer restriction, such as being part of a Shiny, Lucky, or Good Buddy-or-higher group, or a Legendary or Mythical category requiring a setting change.
Can I transfer multiple Shiny or Lucky Pokémon?
Niantic’s restriction applies to transferring multiple Shiny or multiple Lucky Pokémon at once. It is not a blanket statement that an individual Pokémon in either category can never be transferred. Review the warning and use the single-Pokémon flow when appropriate.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can I transfer several Legendary or Mythical Pokémon?
Only after enabling the relevant option in the app’s settings, and some Pokémon, including Mew and Celebi, cannot be selected for transfer at all. Review the exact warning before proceeding.
Can my active Buddy or a Gym defender be transferred?
No. Change the active Buddy first, or remove the Pokémon from Gym defense, before considering a transfer.
Is Pokémon HOME a backup?
No. Pokémon sent from GO to HOME cannot be sent back to GO, and HOME has its own eligibility and form-change warnings. It is a separate one-way export, not an undo feature.
What if I only need one more storage slot?
Transfer a verified duplicate, or use the Pokémon storage upgrade offered in the in-game Shop if you are not ready to make a permanent deletion.
Does the orange dot always mean Pokémon storage is full?
No. Niantic’s help information says the indicator can refer to Pokémon storage or the Item Bag. Check which category is full before releasing Pokémon.
Best Value
Bottom line
Favorite keepers first, review every bulk selection, and confirm only when you accept permanent loss. Pokémon GO’s favorite lock prevents accidental transfer of marked Pokémon, but it cannot protect an unfavorited keeper and it cannot undo a transfer already confirmed.
