You can’t connect Pokémon HeartGold or SoulSilver to Pokémon HOME directly. The only supported route goes through a Generation V game (Black, White, Black 2 or White 2), then Poké Transporter into Pokémon Bank, then Bank into HOME. The last step has a deadline. The official Pokémon Bank page says the service ends on February 26, 2027 at 03:00 UTC, and Bank-to-HOME transfers end with it.

The route at a glance

  1. HeartGold/SoulSilver to a Generation V game. Use the local DS transfer feature to send Pokémon into Black, White, Black 2 or White 2.
  2. Generation V game to Pokémon Bank. Use Poké Transporter.
  3. Pokémon Bank to Pokémon HOME. This needs a paid HOME Premium Plan.

Nintendo’s Pokémon Black Version instruction booklet names HeartGold and SoulSilver as supported source games for the DS transfer feature. It also says the National Pokédex is required. Nintendo Support’s compatibility page lists Black, White, Black 2 and White 2 as Poké Transporter source games. Nothing earlier than Generation V can go into Bank by itself.

What you need before you start

  • The source game: a HeartGold or SoulSilver save containing the Pokémon you want to move.
  • A destination Generation V game: any of the four games above. The Black manual documents the route and the National Pokédex requirement. It doesn’t spell out every unlock condition for every regional version or the sequels, so check the destination game’s own instructions for anything not covered here.
  • Two DS-family systems: the local transfer happens between two games on two systems. Nintendo’s documentation doesn’t recommend a particular model.
  • Poké Transporter and Pokémon Bank, already installed: both stopped being downloadable from the Nintendo 3DS eShop in March 2023, according to The Pokémon Company International’s March 7, 2023 notice. If you already have them on your 3DS, you can keep using them. If you never installed them, the sources don’t offer another way to get them.
  • Pokémon HOME Premium: required for the Bank-to-HOME move.

Step 1: Move Pokémon from HeartGold or SoulSilver to Generation V

Put the HeartGold or SoulSilver cartridge in one system and your Generation V game in the other. Start the transfer feature from the Generation V game. The National Pokédex must be unlocked there, per the Black manual. Nintendo’s published documents I’m relying on don’t give the full in-game button-by-button sequence, so follow the on-screen prompts and the destination game’s manual for the details.

Once the Pokémon are in the Generation V game, they’re ready for the next stage.

Step 2: Send them into Pokémon Bank with Poké Transporter

Poké Transporter is the bridge from Black, White, Black 2 and White 2 into Pokémon Bank. HeartGold and SoulSilver cartridges can’t be read by it, which is why step 1 comes first. Nintendo’s compatibility page confirms the supported games, but it doesn’t publish the detailed box-selection workflow, so rely on the app’s own prompts.

Step 3: Move from Bank to Pokémon HOME

This is the only part with two methods. Both require HOME Premium, according to Pokémon Support’s “About connecting Pokémon HOME to different games” article (updated January 30, 2026).

How it works Bank and HOME exchange a Moving Key. You choose which Bank boxes to move. HOME moves the Bank contents once the Nintendo Network ID used for Bank is linked to the Nintendo Account used for HOME.
Time limit The Moving Key expires after three minutes. Not stated
Selectivity Box by box All Pokémon in Bank move at once
Main risk Running out the key’s three-minute window. Moving the wrong collection if the wrong accounts are linked.

If you want to move only some of your Pokémon, use the 3DS method. If you don’t have a working 3DS, confirm that the linked accounts are the ones you mean to use before you confirm, because the whole of Bank goes across.

Before you confirm: the move is one-way

Pokémon moved from Bank into HOME can’t be sent back to Bank. HOME also shows, for each Pokémon, which games it can be moved into. Check that display before you plan to use a Pokémon in a particular later game, because not every Pokémon can enter every compatible game.

Deadline and cost

The Pokémon Bank service page gives the end date as February 26, 2027 at 03:00 UTC. In 2023 Nintendo said Bank would keep running at no cost with no end date planned. The newer notice replaces that expectation. If you want your Pokémon in HOME, don’t leave the final step until the last week.

HOME Premium prices on Pokémon’s U.S. HOME page (accessed 2026): $2.99 for 30 days, $4.99 for 90 days, $15.99 for 365 days. These exclude tax, may change, and are U.S. prices. Because you only need Premium for the Bank move, the 30-day plan is likely the cheapest way to cover it, provided you can finish within that window.

Troubleshooting

  • My Bank subscription expired. That alone doesn’t mean your boxes are empty. Pokémon Support has an article on opening Bank and checking for stored Pokémon. You still need HOME Premium for the transfer.
  • The Moving Key stopped working. It lasts three minutes, so generate a new one and complete the exchange within that time.
  • I can’t download Bank or Poké Transporter. The eShop cut off new downloads in March 2023. The sources describe no replacement download.
  • I don’t have a 3DS. Use the account-linking method described in step 3, bearing in mind it moves everything in Bank.
