The best method depends on your old phone. From Android, use Apple’s Move to iOS during the iPhone 17 Pro’s initial setup; it can bring over camera photos, videos, albums, WhatsApp messages and media, contacts, texts, calendars and other listed data. From another iPhone, use Quick Start to transfer directly or download from iCloud. Keep both phones nearby and connected to power until the transfer finishes. If the iPhone 17 Pro is already set up, an Android migration requires erasing it to use Move to iOS; otherwise, move content manually.
Choose the right transfer route
Start by identifying the old phone and the state of the iPhone 17 Pro. The route determines what moves automatically and whether you must erase the new phone.

Prepare both phones before moving anything
A little preparation prevents the most common failures: an incomplete transfer, a full iPhone, or a process that stops when the old phone changes networks.
- Charge both phones and keep their chargers available. For a large library, leave both connected to power throughout the transfer.
- Check available storage on the iPhone 17 Pro and compare it with the photos, videos and files on the old phone. Do not begin if the destination cannot hold the selected content.
- On Android, turn on Wi-Fi and update Chrome if transferring bookmarks matters.
- Have the Android phone’s screen lock or account credentials available if either device asks for authentication.
- Do not open other apps, answer calls or let either phone sleep while Move to iOS is transferring.
- If you plan to use a cable, use a USB-C data cable that fits both phones. Apple documents a direct wired Android-to-iPhone connection as a faster alternative to the temporary wireless network.
Transfer time is not fixed. It depends on the amount of data and, for wireless or iCloud operations, network conditions. A large video library can take substantially longer than contacts and messages.

Transfer from Android with Move to iOS
Move to iOS is Apple’s supported Android-to-iPhone migration path. It creates a temporary Wi-Fi connection between the phones and lets you choose categories before copying them.
1. Start the iPhone 17 Pro setup
- Turn on the iPhone 17 Pro and proceed through the setup screens until you reach Transfer Your Apps & Data.
- Choose Set Up Without Another Device (the wording can vary slightly by iOS version), then select From Android and Transfer with App.
- Leave the iPhone on the code screen. It will display a six-digit or ten-digit code for the Android phone.
2. Install and authorize Move to iOS on Android
- Install and open Apple’s Move to iOS app on the Android phone.
- Accept the terms and grant the permissions the app requests. These permissions allow it to read the categories you choose to migrate.
- Enter the code shown on the iPhone 17 Pro.
3. Join the iPhone’s temporary network
After the code is accepted, Android prompts you to join a temporary Wi-Fi network created by the iPhone. Allow the connection even if Android reports that the network has no internet access; it is being used for the phone-to-phone transfer.
4. Select content and let the transfer finish
- On Android, select the categories you want, including WhatsApp if you want chats and media, plus photos, videos, contacts, messages, calendars and files.
- Tap the option to continue and leave both phones nearby, untouched and connected to power.
- Wait until the progress bar on the iPhone 17 Pro reaches the end. Do not judge the result while the bar is still moving, even if Android appears finished first.
5. Complete setup and download matched apps
Finish the remaining iPhone setup screens. Afterward, open the App Store and download the free apps that Move to iOS matched. Android app packages are not copied to iOS; the iPhone installs compatible iOS versions instead.

What Move to iOS can transfer
Apple lists the following categories for its Android migration. Availability can depend on the source data and the apps or accounts involved.

Apple’s list does not mean every Android app, account or piece of local data is reproduced identically. Check each important app after setup and sign in again when requested.
Move photos and videos from Android
Photos and videos stored in the Android camera library are included in Move to iOS, along with photo albums. Select the photo and video categories during the content-selection screen and wait for the complete iPhone progress bar before opening Photos on the new phone.

If photos are missing
- Confirm that the files were stored locally on Android and that you selected the photo categories.
- Check free iPhone storage. A full destination can leave the migration incomplete or prevent later downloads.
- Allow the transfer to finish fully; do not disconnect or switch apps because Android appears idle.
- If the automatic route cannot be used, copy photos and videos through a computer using Apple’s manual-transfer guidance, or configure the relevant photo account or service manually on the iPhone.
Albums may not look exactly the same if they were created by a third-party Android gallery app rather than stored as ordinary photo-library albums. Review the resulting albums after setup and reorganize them on the iPhone if necessary.
Transfer WhatsApp chats and media
Yes. Apple explicitly includes WhatsApp messages and media in the content that Move to iOS can transfer from Android. The critical step is selecting WhatsApp on the Android content screen and leaving both phones alone until the iPhone’s progress bar is complete.
- Start Move to iOS from the iPhone setup flow and enter the displayed code on Android.
- When the category list appears, select WhatsApp.
- Keep the phones nearby and charging. Do not answer a call, open another Android app or interrupt the temporary Wi-Fi connection.
- Finish the iPhone setup before opening WhatsApp and checking the result.
If WhatsApp appears incomplete, first confirm that the migration itself finished rather than relying on the Android app’s status. An interrupted migration may require resetting the iPhone to its Hello screen and starting again with a newly generated code.

Move apps from Android
Move to iOS does not copy Android application binaries. It can match some free apps when an equivalent is available in both Google Play and the App Store and the app supports Apple’s transfer feature. The iPhone then downloads the matched iOS versions from the App Store after migration.

App data is not guaranteed merely because an app itself is matched. Open important apps, sign in and verify subscriptions, saved projects and cloud content individually. Music, books and PDFs are not part of the automatic Android migration and must be moved manually.
Transfer from an old iPhone with Quick Start
When the old phone is an iPhone, Quick Start is the direct route. The current iPhone or iPad must have iOS 11 or later, with Wi-Fi connected and Bluetooth enabled.

- Turn on the iPhone 17 Pro and place it next to the old iPhone.
- On the old iPhone, make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on and follow the Quick Start prompt.
- Use the old iPhone’s camera to authenticate the animation shown on the new phone, then enter the old device passcode when asked.
- Choose either Transfer from iPhone for a direct device-to-device copy or Download from iCloud to restore from an iCloud backup.
- Keep both devices close and powered until the process completes. With direct transfer, neither phone is ready for normal use until the transfer has finished on both.
Quick Start’s duration varies with the amount of data and network conditions. A direct transfer avoids waiting for a full iCloud download but still requires both phones to remain together for the entire operation.
What changes when the iPhone 17 Pro is already set up?
Apple’s Move to iOS flow is available during initial setup. If you have reached the iPhone Home Screen, using it requires erasing the iPhone and returning to the Hello screen. Erasing removes data currently on the iPhone, so back up anything you need before choosing that route.
Erase and redo the migration
- Back up or copy any information now stored on the iPhone 17 Pro that you want to keep.
- Use the iPhone’s reset option to erase all content and settings, then wait for the Hello screen.
- Start setup again, choose From Android, generate a new code and repeat the Move to iOS process.
Keep the existing setup and transfer manually
If erasing is unacceptable, leave the iPhone configured and move only what you need. Photos and videos can be copied through a computer or brought in by configuring an account or service manually. Reinstall iOS versions of apps from the App Store and sign in to restore any data those apps keep in their own cloud systems. Music, books, PDFs and unsupported files also require manual handling.

Wireless versus USB-C transfer from Android

The content categories and setup requirements remain the same whichever connection you use. If the wireless transfer repeatedly stalls and you have a suitable data cable, retry with the wired connection.
Fix a stalled or failed migration
Move to iOS stops or returns to the start
- Keep Move to iOS visible on Android; switching to another app can interrupt it.
- Temporarily turn off cellular data on Android so it does not leave the temporary iPhone network.
- Review Android settings that alter Wi-Fi behavior, such as automatic network switching or connection optimization, and disable them temporarily if they interfere.
- Restart both phones and begin the setup again.
Only part of the content arrived
- Check the iPhone’s available capacity and the size of the selected photos, videos and files.
- Confirm that WhatsApp and the required photo categories were selected before starting.
- Wait for the complete iPhone progress bar. Android reaching its own completion screen first does not prove that the iPhone has finished.
- If the iPhone ran out of space or the transfer was interrupted, erase it, return to the Hello screen and retry with a smaller selection or more available capacity.
The migration was interrupted and needs a new code
Reset the iPhone to the Hello screen, start setup again and select From Android. The iPhone will generate a new six-digit code. Use that code in Move to iOS rather than trying to resume an abandoned session.
Quick Start does not appear
- Bring the phones close together.
- Confirm Wi-Fi is connected and Bluetooth is enabled on the old iPhone.
- Restart both devices and try the setup prompt again.
- Ensure the old iPhone or iPad meets the iOS 11-or-later requirement.
Final verification after setup
Before wiping or trading in the old phone, work through this checklist:
