The safest first-party way to move photos, videos, settings, contacts, messages, and other content from an older Galaxy phone to a new Galaxy is Samsung Smart Switch. On the new phone, open Smart Switch, tap Receive data, choose Galaxy/Android, and select a wireless or cable connection. On the old phone, tap Send data, approve the connection, choose the categories you need, and start the transfer.
Smart Switch does not guarantee a perfect clone. The categories offered depend on the phones, operating-system versions, app support, and the type of content. Review the selection screen, check important accounts and apps afterward, and keep the old phone unchanged until you have verified your data.

What you need before transferring
Use Smart Switch on both Galaxy phones. It is Samsung’s transfer utility and may already be installed. On many models, you can find it at Settings > Accounts and backup > Bring data from old device or by searching Settings for “Smart Switch.” Menu names vary by model, carrier and software version; if that path is different, open the Smart Switch app directly.

- Charge both phones before starting. Samsung’s cable-transfer guidance says each device should have at least 20 percent charge. For wireless transfers, Samsung’s US photo guide recommends plugging both phones into chargers.
- Install pending system or Smart Switch updates if the phones offer them, then restart either phone that behaves unusually.
- Keep the old phone unlocked and nearby. You may need to approve a connection, enter a pairing code, or allow permissions for contacts, messages, files and other categories.
- Do not erase, reset or trade in the old phone until you have checked the new one.
- If you are using a cable, identify the ports on both phones and check whether the cable is data-capable. Some combinations require a USB-OTG adapter; the exact requirement depends on the models and cable ends.
Have a second copy of irreplaceable files
Smart Switch is designed to move content, not to replace a backup strategy. Copy especially important photographs or videos to a computer, supported USB storage or a cloud service before you begin if losing them would be unacceptable. Samsung also points to Google Photos for backing up photos and videos. A cloud photo backup can provide another copy, but it does not replace Smart Switch when you need device settings, messages or other phone data.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Choose the right Smart Switch method
The transfer method affects accessories, charging and how much data you can move conveniently. Samsung recommends a wired connection for a large transfer because it is relatively faster, but it does not publish a universal speed or completion-time guarantee.
| Method | Best for | What you need | Important checks and limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wireless | A normal move when you want to avoid buying or finding a cable. | Both phones, Smart Switch and a nearby wireless connection. | Keep the phones close together. Samsung’s US photo-transfer instructions specify within 4 inches and recommend charging both devices. The time varies with the amount of photos, videos and other multimedia. |
| USB cable | A large library or a transfer where you want Samsung’s relatively faster wired route. | A compatible data cable; a USB-OTG adapter may be needed for some phone and cable combinations. | Check both ports before purchasing an accessory. Samsung’s cable guidance says the phones should have at least 20 percent charge. Do not disconnect until Smart Switch reports completion. |
| PC backup and restore | When direct phone-to-phone transfer is unavailable or you want an intermediate backup. | A computer, Smart Switch for the computer and suitable USB cables. | You back up the old phone first, then connect the new phone and restore selected categories. The process uses computer storage and takes an extra stage. |
| External storage | An intermediate copy when the phones support USB storage or a microSD workflow. | Supported USB storage or a microSD card and any required adapter. | Not every Galaxy has a microSD slot. Capacity, filesystem support, ports and adapters matter. This is a backup-and-restore route rather than a direct phone-to-phone connection. |
Transfer wirelessly from Galaxy to Galaxy
Wireless is the simplest option when both phones are working and you do not have a suitable cable. For a large video library, allow plenty of time and keep the devices charging and undisturbed.
- Open Smart Switch on the new Galaxy. From Settings, search for Smart Switch if you cannot find it, then open the app.
- Choose Receive data. Select Galaxy/Android as the source type because the old phone is a Galaxy.
- Open Smart Switch on the old Galaxy and choose Send data. Select Wireless when prompted.
- Approve the connection. Follow the pairing prompt on both screens. If a confirmation code or permission request appears, verify that the two phones are connecting to each other.
- Place the phones close together. Samsung’s US photo-transfer flow calls for a distance of no more than 4 inches. Keep both phones on chargers during the transfer as Samsung recommends for this wireless process.
- Review the categories. Smart Switch displays the data it can find on the old phone. Select photos, videos, settings and any other categories you want. Expand category details rather than assuming every item inside a category is included.
- Start the transfer and leave the phones alone. The duration depends on the amount of multimedia and other data. There is no single reliable completion time for every Galaxy-to-Galaxy move.
- Wait for the completion message. Some apps may continue installing or preparing data after the main progress screen finishes. Do not factory-reset the old phone while that work is still occurring.
Transfer with a USB cable
A cable is usually the better choice for a large amount of data. Samsung describes wired transfer as relatively faster, but the actual result depends on the phones, cable, ports and amount of content.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
- Check the hardware. Compare the connector on each Galaxy. A direct USB-C-to-USB-C cable may work, while another combination may need a USB-OTG adapter. Use a cable that supports data, not only charging.
- Charge both phones to at least 20 percent. This is Samsung’s stated minimum for cable transfer. Charging them more fully reduces the risk of an interruption during a long move.
- Start on the new Galaxy. Open Smart Switch, tap Receive data, choose Galaxy/Android, and select Cable.
- Connect the phones. Attach the cable and any required adapter, then follow the on-screen prompts. Open Smart Switch on the old phone and tap Send data if it does not open automatically.
- Allow access and choose categories. Accept the connection and permissions, then inspect the available photos, videos, settings, contacts, messages and other data.
- Begin the transfer. Keep the cable firmly connected and avoid using either phone until Smart Switch says the process is complete.
- Disconnect only after completion. If app installation or data preparation continues, let it finish before removing the cable or resetting the old device.
If the cable is not detected
- Unlock the old phone and accept any USB or permission prompt.
- Reconnect both ends, then try another known-good data cable if available.
- Remove lint or debris from the ports without forcing a tool into them.
- Confirm that the adapter is a USB-OTG model when the connection requires OTG.
- Restart both phones and repeat the Smart Switch steps.
- If the phones still cannot establish a wired connection, use wireless, PC backup and restore, or supported external storage instead.
What Smart Switch can move—and what it may leave behind
Samsung lists photos, videos, contacts, calendar entries, messages, music, call logs and other content among transferable categories. The exact list is generated from the source phone and can differ by operating system and model.
| Content | What to expect | What to verify afterward |
|---|---|---|
| Photos and videos | Usually offered as media categories when Smart Switch can read them. | Open Gallery, check recent and older dates, and open several large videos. Look for albums or folders that matter to you. |
| Contacts and calendar | Transfer options can include contacts and calendar data. | Check which account owns the entries and confirm that cloud-synchronized contacts are visible after signing in. |
| Messages and call logs | Smart Switch may offer text messages and call history. | Check recent conversations, attachments and dates. Some protected or app-specific data may not be available. |
| Settings and home layout | Samsung identifies selected settings and home-layout items as Galaxy-only categories. | Check Wi-Fi networks, notification preferences, wallpaper, widgets, folders and other settings that affect daily use. |
| Apps and app data | Apps may be reinstalled or have some data moved, but support varies. Some app work can continue after the main transfer. | Open important apps, sign in again where required, and confirm that locally stored data is present. |
| DRM-protected material | Samsung’s Gulf guidance says DRM-protected content cannot be transferred. | Use the original service or account on the new phone and check its download or reauthorization process. |
| Secure, encrypted or cloud-only data | Availability depends on the app, account and encryption method; Smart Switch does not promise a complete clone. | Sign in to the relevant account and verify the content directly in the app. |
Do not interpret a completed Smart Switch screen as proof that every private app database, secure item, downloaded license or cloud account moved. The selection screen is the authoritative list for that particular pair of phones.
Use a computer as an intermediate backup
PC backup and restore is useful if the old and new phones cannot connect directly, if you want a stored copy before changing phones, or if your wireless connection is unreliable.

- Install Samsung Smart Switch on a compatible computer.
- Connect the old Galaxy by USB, unlock it and approve the computer-access prompt.
- In Smart Switch, choose the backup command and select the categories to include. Wait for the backup to finish before disconnecting.
- Connect the new Galaxy to the same computer and approve access.
- Choose the restore command, select the backup and review the categories available for restoration.
- Start the restore and leave the phone connected until Smart Switch reports completion.
- Open Gallery, Contacts, Messages, Settings and important apps on the new phone. Keep the computer backup until you are satisfied that the new phone has what you need.
A computer backup is an intermediate copy, not a promise that every app’s private or encrypted data can be restored. App sign-ins, licenses and cloud-only information may still require the original service.

Samsung documents workflows using supported USB storage and, on models that have a card slot, microSD. This can help when you need a physical intermediate copy or cannot keep both phones connected.
USB storage
Connect supported USB storage through the appropriate adapter, open Smart Switch and choose its backup option. After the old phone finishes, connect the storage to the new phone, open Smart Switch and choose restore. Confirm that the drive has enough free capacity and that the phone supports the adapter and storage format.

microSD
If the Galaxy model supports microSD, Smart Switch may offer the card as a backup destination. Newer models may not include a card slot, so do not buy a card until you have checked both model specifications and the available Smart Switch options. Restore from the card on the new phone and review the categories before starting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify the new Galaxy before erasing the old one
Verification catches omissions while the original phone is still available. Use this checklist after the transfer and after any delayed app installation has finished:
- Open Gallery and inspect photos from different dates, plus several long or high-resolution videos.
- Check Contacts and Calendar, including entries stored in each account you use.
- Open Messages and Call history and look for recent conversations, attachments and important dates.
- Review the home screen, folders, widgets, wallpaper, notification behavior and key system settings.
- Launch banking, authentication, messaging, password-manager and work apps. Expect some to require a fresh sign-in or device approval.
- Confirm that cloud services are syncing and that downloaded offline content can be accessed when appropriate.
- Check storage usage on the new phone so an unexpectedly small transfer does not go unnoticed.
- Keep the old phone powered on and unchanged until you have verified every category that matters. Only then should you sign out, encrypt or erase it for resale or recycling.
Troubleshoot common Smart Switch problems
The phones do not see each other wirelessly
Bring them within the close range specified by Samsung’s wireless photo guidance, keep both screens unlocked, confirm that Smart Switch is open on both phones, and accept every pairing and permission prompt. Restart both phones if the discovery screen remains empty. If wireless discovery continues to fail, switch to a cable or use PC backup and restore.

The transfer stops or appears frozen
Large media libraries can take a long time, so first check whether the progress indicator is changing. Keep both devices charging and do not move them far apart. If the process genuinely stops, note the last category shown, restart both phones and try again with fewer categories. Moving photos and videos first, then settings and other data, can isolate a problematic category.
Some photos or videos are missing
Use Smart Switch’s category details to see what it selected. Check folders outside the usual Camera and Screenshots locations, cloud-only albums and media protected by an app. Samsung says DRM-protected content cannot transfer, and app-specific or encrypted media may need to be downloaded again from its original service.
Apps are present but data is not
Reopen the app and sign in with the account that originally stored the data. Some apps keep information in an encrypted database or in the cloud and do not expose it to Smart Switch. Follow the app maker’s own migration or backup process rather than assuming a reinstall includes its private data.
The new phone has less free space than expected
Check the Smart Switch selection and the old phone’s storage categories. Exclude duplicates, temporary downloads or media you already backed up, then transfer again if necessary. Do not delete the old copies until the new phone and any separate backup have been checked.
Privacy and account considerations
Smart Switch can copy personal messages, call logs, contacts, photographs and other sensitive information. Perform the transfer on a private network or in a private location, use only cables and storage you trust, and remove temporary computer or external-storage backups when you no longer need them. After confirming the move, review account sessions and device registrations, especially for work, financial and authentication apps.
Regional Samsung instructions can differ. The core flow documented in US guidance is Receive data on the new phone, Send data on the old phone, then a wireless or cable choice; Gulf and Caribbean guidance supplies additional limits for DRM-protected content and Galaxy-only categories. Samsung’s support pages were checked on October 13, 2026, and labels can change with future software updates.
