Safari’s ZIP is not documented as a direct Edge import file, and both the ZIP and password CSV should be treated as temporary, exposed copies and deleted after use.
Choose the route that matches what you need
Photos, browser records, and saved passwords are stored and exported differently. Decide whether you want a one-time local copy or continued cloud access before moving anything.

| What you are moving | Best starting point | What Windows receives | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Selected photos or a complete local set | Photos on Mac: File > Export | Image and video files on a destination you choose, such as an external drive | Apple’s guides do not specify a required drive format, capacity, or transfer speed. |
| Original imported photo files | Photos on Mac: File > Export > Export Unmodified Original | The original files, with Live Photos represented as a still image plus a video | Edits made in Photos are not applied to an unmodified-original export. |
| An existing iCloud Photos library | iCloud for Windows or iCloud.com | Downloads from the cloud, with iCloud for Windows also exposing the library in File Explorer | iCloud Photos synchronizes edits and deletions; it is not an independent backup. |
| Safari favorites, history, extensions, credit cards, and passwords | Safari: File > Export Browsing Data to File | A ZIP archive on the Mac, followed by the file types that Edge’s import dialog accepts | The reviewed Edge documentation does not establish that Safari’s ZIP can be imported directly as one archive. |
Prepare the Mac and Windows PC
- Update macOS and Windows enough that the menu names in the instructions are present, and sign in to the Apple Account used for iCloud Photos if you plan to use the cloud route.
- Have the external storage device connected and enough free space for the photos you selected. Apple does not publish a capacity or file-system requirement in the export instructions, so check the device’s available space rather than relying on a generic estimate.
- On Windows, install and open Microsoft Edge, then sign in to the Windows profile where you want the imported favorites and passwords. Edge’s import controls are under that profile.
- Decide whether you need an archive of everything or only a curated set. Exporting a smaller selection makes duplicate and obsolete files easier to identify.
- Plan a cleanup moment. Safari’s ZIP and password CSV are readable by anyone who obtains them, so do not leave them in Downloads, on a shared drive, or in the Recycle Bin after the migration.
Transfer photos with a local export
Export edited or converted copies
- Open Photos on the Mac and select the pictures and videos to move. You can select individual items, a group, or an album’s contents.
- Choose File > Export. Pick the available export settings for the file type, quality, naming, and destination shown by Photos.
- Set the destination to the connected external storage device or another folder that Windows can later read, and start the export.
- Wait for Photos to finish. Eject the device from macOS before disconnecting it, then connect it to the Windows PC and copy the exported folders to the location you want.
This route creates ordinary files you can organize with File Explorer. It is a one-time copy: later edits or deletions in the Mac Photos library will not change the exported files.
Apple’s procedure is documented at Download photos to your Mac from iCloud. The same export workflow applies when the selected items are already stored locally in Photos.

Export the unmodified originals
Use this option when preserving the source files matters more than carrying over edits made inside Photos.
- In Photos, select the items.
- Choose File > Export > Export Unmodified Original.
- Choose whether metadata and the folder arrangement options offered by Photos suit your archive, select the destination, and confirm the export.
- Open a few files on Windows before deleting or changing anything on the Mac. Check both the image and video components of any Live Photo you care about.
Apple states that an unmodified Live Photo is exported as two separate files: a still image and a video. That is expected, not a failed transfer. The original-format options are described in Apple’s Export unmodified originals from Photos guide.
Verify a local export
- Compare the number of selected items with the number of files or folders on Windows, allowing for Live Photos producing two files.
- Open representative photos and videos, including the largest files and any formats you regularly edit.
- Keep the Mac library or another copy until the Windows files have been checked. The export itself is not proof that every destination file is readable.
Use iCloud Photos from Windows
iCloud for Windows
If the photos already live in iCloud Photos, Apple provides a Windows route that avoids making a separate Mac export. Install iCloud for Windows, sign in with the same Apple Account, and enable Photos. The library then appears through iCloud’s Windows integration. In File Explorer, thumbnails can appear before the full-resolution files are downloaded; download the items you need before treating them as local copies.

iCloud.com
For a small selection or a computer where you do not want to install iCloud for Windows, sign in to iCloud.com in a browser, open Photos, select the items, and download them. Save the downloads to a known Windows folder, then open several files to verify them.
Special iCloud-for-Windows cases
- Apple says automatic changes for a Shared Photo Library require iCloud for Windows 14 or later. If the shared library does not behave as expected, check the installed iCloud version before troubleshooting the files themselves.
- Apple’s setup guidance says Shared Albums storage can be moved only to another folder on the Windows system drive (C:), not to an external drive. This restriction applies to the Shared Albums storage setting, not to every ordinary file copy you make afterward.
- Do not describe iCloud Photos as a backup. Apple documents that edits and deletions are reflected across devices using the service, so a deletion can propagate to the Windows view as well. Keep a separate local export when you need an unchanging archive. See Use iCloud Photos on Mac.
Which photo route should you use?
| Decision | Local Photos export | iCloud Photos access |
|---|---|---|
| You already use iCloud Photos | Optional; useful for a fixed archive | Usually the quickest way to see the existing library on Windows |
| You need files that remain unchanged if the library is edited later | Yes, provided you retain the exported copy | No; synchronization can reflect later edits and deletions |
| You want original imported files | Choose Export Unmodified Original | Download the cloud items, then inspect what was retrieved |
| You have limited or unreliable internet access | External storage avoids a cloud download after export | Requires an internet connection to retrieve items that are not already local |
| You want to keep using one synchronized library | Creates a separate copy rather than ongoing synchronization | Designed for continued access across devices |
Export Safari browsing data on the Mac
Safari’s current export command packages multiple categories in a ZIP. Apple says the export can include bookmarks, browsing history, extensions, credit cards, and passwords. Safari profiles have separate history and extensions; bookmarks, credit cards, and passwords are shared across profiles.

- Do not email the archive or put it in a shared folder. Apple warns that the ZIP is unencrypted and visible to anyone who can access it.
Follow Apple’s exact menu and category descriptions in Export browsing data from Safari. The ZIP is an export container, not a guarantee that every Windows browser can consume the archive directly.
Import the supported files into Microsoft Edge
Open Edge’s import controls
- On Windows, open Microsoft Edge.
- Open Settings and more (the three-dot menu), then choose Settings.
- Open Profiles, then choose Import browser data.
- Review the source choices. Edge documents importing from Chrome and importing files for favorites or passwords.
Microsoft’s current instructions are in Import your favorites and passwords in Microsoft Edge.
Import favorites or bookmarks
- In the import dialog, select the option for favorites or bookmarks from an HTML file.
- Browse to the HTML file available from your prepared export, select it, and confirm.
- Open Edge’s Favorites menu and check several folders and links. Look for duplicate folders or a missing top-level folder before reorganizing anything.
Import saved passwords
- In Edge’s import dialog, choose the option for passwords from a CSV file.
- Select the password CSV and confirm the import.
- Open Edge’s password settings and verify a few known entries by domain. Do not paste the CSV into a spreadsheet or cloud note while checking it; it is a plain, readable credential list.
Edge documents HTML for favorites and CSV for passwords, alongside its Chrome import option. The documentation does not say that Safari’s multi-category ZIP can be selected as the HTML or CSV source. If Edge rejects the ZIP, extract it only on a controlled computer and use the specific HTML or CSV file that Edge’s dialog accepts. If the Safari export does not provide a compatible file for a category, the Edge documentation does not establish an automatic Safari-to-Edge conversion, so avoid deleting the Mac data until you have another verified way to recreate that category.

Protect and delete temporary exports
Safari ZIP
Apple says the Safari browsing-data ZIP is not encrypted. Anyone who can read the file may be able to see the exported browsing information and credentials. Keep it in a location with access control while importing, and delete it as soon as you have verified the needed data in Edge.
Password CSV
A password CSV is also unprotected. Microsoft recommends permanently deleting it after import. In Windows File Explorer, select the CSV and press Shift+Delete, then confirm. Also remove duplicate copies from the Mac, the external drive, cloud-sync folders, and the Recycle Bin. Do not retain it as an emergency backup; use the browser’s protected password storage or an encrypted backup method instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesExternal photo storage
Photo exports are not automatically private just because they are images. If the drive will be carried or shared, keep it under your normal device and account access controls, and do not leave the Mac’s temporary export folders mixed with credential files.

Troubleshoot common migration failures
Edge says the Safari ZIP is not a valid import file
This is consistent with the documented formats. Edge’s file workflow calls for HTML favorites and CSV passwords, not a Safari ZIP as a single source. Return to Profiles > Import browser data, choose the category-specific importer, and select the corresponding file type if one was produced. Keep the original Safari data until you have confirmed the result.
Favorites imported but appear in the wrong place
Open the Favorites manager and inspect the imported folder and its subfolders. Move or rename folders only after confirming that the links are present; repeated imports can create duplicate trees.
Passwords are missing or unusable
Check that you selected the CSV importer rather than the HTML favorites importer, and that the CSV was generated for the intended Safari data. Verify several entries by domain in Edge’s password settings. If the file is rejected, do not edit credentials in an unprotected online tool; retain the Mac source and use a supported, local export path.
Photos show thumbnails but will not open offline
With iCloud for Windows, a thumbnail can appear before the full file is downloaded. Use the download control in File Explorer or download the selected items from iCloud.com, then open the files while disconnected to confirm they are local.
A Live Photo looks incomplete
An unmodified-original export intentionally produces a still image and a separate video. Keep both files together if you want the motion component, and test them in the Windows photo or video application you plan to use.
Shared Albums cannot be placed on the external drive
Apple’s iCloud for Windows setup guidance limits the Shared Albums storage location to another folder on the C: drive. Leave that setting on C:, then copy any files you are allowed to download to external storage as a separate step.
Quick Recap
Final verification checklist
- Open representative exported photos and videos on Windows, including a Live Photo pair.
- Confirm that the required Edge favorite folders and links are present.
- Test several imported passwords without exposing the CSV to another application.
- Check whether any history, extensions, credit cards, or profile-specific data still need a separate Windows setup; the documented Edge file imports do not promise a complete Safari-profile clone.
- Delete the Safari ZIP and password CSV from every temporary location, then empty the Recycle Bin.
- Keep the verified photo archive and the original Mac library until you are satisfied that the migration is complete.
