The best way to transfer photos, messages, apps, and other iPhone data is usually Quick Start while your old iPhone is nearby and working. During setup, you can either move data directly from the old phone or download it from an iCloud backup. If the old iPhone is unavailable, restore an existing iCloud or computer backup. For an Android phone, use Apple’s Move to iOS process during the new iPhone’s initial setup.
Your choice depends on four things: whether the old phone still works, whether a current backup exists, whether the new iPhone has already been configured, and whether you prefer a wireless, cloud, computer, or wired transfer.

Choose the right transfer method
Use this decision guide before turning on the new iPhone. Direct migration needs both iPhones available until the transfer finishes. A backup restore can work without the old phone, but only if a usable iCloud or computer backup already exists.
| Situation | Best route | What you need | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Old iPhone is nearby, working, and you want to move directly | Quick Start with direct transfer | Both iPhones, power, and enough uninterrupted time | Both phones remain occupied until the transfer completes |
| Old iPhone is nearby, but you want to use the new phone sooner | Quick Start with Download from iCloud | An Apple Account and reliable Wi-Fi | Apps and other content can continue downloading in the background |
| Old iPhone is unavailable, but an iCloud backup exists | Restore from iCloud Backup | The Apple Account used for the backup and the backup’s password if requested | The new iPhone must be erased first if it has already been set up |
| A computer backup exists | Restore with Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes | The computer containing the backup and a suitable cable | An unencrypted backup does not transfer Health and Activity data |
| You prefer a cable and can identify the correct connectors | Wired migration | A cable or adapter compatible with both iPhone models | There is no single cable type that fits every iPhone generation |
| You are moving from Android | Move to iOS during iPhone setup | The Android phone and the new iPhone during initial setup | An already-set-up iPhone must be erased to use this route |
Apple warns that transfer time varies with network conditions and the amount of data being moved. No reliable universal duration can be promised.

Prepare both phones before transferring
A few checks prevent the most common interruptions.
- Have your Apple Account password ready. You may need it to activate the new phone, download apps, and restore account data.
- Confirm which source you will use. If you are relying on iCloud or a computer backup, make sure that backup exists before erasing or trading in the old iPhone.
- Connect the phones to power. Keep both devices charging during a direct Quick Start transfer, and keep the new phone powered while cloud content downloads.
- Use dependable Wi-Fi for cloud routes. A large photo library and many apps can take substantial time to download.
- Leave enough uninterrupted time for direct migration. You cannot treat the old phone as available for normal use while Quick Start is still transferring directly.
- Do not erase the old iPhone yet. First verify that important photos, conversations, and apps are present on the new device.
Transfer directly with Quick Start
Quick Start is the simplest route when the previous iPhone is still usable. Apple’s current US instructions say the previous iPhone must run iOS 11 or later. A previous iPad used as the source must run iPadOS 13 or later. Place the old device near the new one and follow the onscreen setup instructions.
Start Quick Start
- Turn on the new iPhone and place it beside the old iPhone.
- Follow the prompt on the old device to begin setting up the new one.
- Continue through the onscreen instructions and sign in with your Apple Account when asked.
- When the transfer choices appear, select either the direct transfer option from the previous iPhone or the option to download from iCloud.
- Keep both phones near each other and connected to power while the migration runs.
The exact wording of prompts can vary by iOS release, but the decision is the same: move the data phone-to-phone now, or restore it from iCloud and let downloads continue after setup.

Direct transfer copies the available data from the old iPhone to the new one over the connection established by Quick Start. It is the best fit when the old phone is working and you want the new phone to contain the migrated data before you begin using it.
- Keep both devices close together for the entire process.
- Keep both connected to power rather than relying on battery charge.
- Do not restart, separate, or start using either phone until the transfer indicates that it is complete.
- Expect the wait to depend on the amount of data and current network conditions; Apple does not publish one guaranteed transfer time.
After the transfer completes, leave the new iPhone on Wi-Fi and power for a while if apps or other items still show download progress.
Choose Download from iCloud
This Quick Start choice restores the new iPhone from iCloud instead of keeping the two phones occupied for a direct copy. It can get you to the Home Screen sooner, while apps and other data continue downloading in the background.

If the previous iPhone is lost, damaged, unavailable, or already gone, an iCloud backup can still restore the new device. This route depends on having a backup made with the Apple Account you can access.
Restore during first-time setup
- Turn on the new iPhone and continue through the initial setup screens.
- At the screen that offers ways to transfer apps and data, choose Restore from iCloud Backup.
- Sign in with the Apple Account used to create the backup.
- Review the available backups by their dates and sizes.
- Choose the backup that best matches the old iPhone and let the restore begin.
- Keep the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and power while apps and other content download.
Use the backup date and size to distinguish a recent, complete backup from an older one. Choosing the wrong backup can leave recent photos, messages, or app data absent from the new phone.
If the new iPhone has already been set up
Apple requires the new iPhone to be erased before you can follow the full iCloud-backup restore flow. Erasing removes data currently stored on that new phone, so copy or otherwise preserve anything important before proceeding.
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Choose Erase All Content and Settings and follow the confirmation screens.
- After the iPhone returns to the Hello screen, repeat setup and choose Restore from iCloud Backup.
Do not erase the new device merely because an app is still downloading. Erasure is for restarting the setup process when you need to select a different backup or transfer method.

A local backup can be restored through Finder on a Mac, Apple Devices on a Windows PC, or iTunes on systems that still use it. Use the software that created or currently manages the backup, and connect the new iPhone to that computer.

Restore with Finder on a Mac
- Connect the new iPhone to the Mac.
- Open Finder and select the iPhone in the sidebar.
- Choose the option to restore a backup.
- Select the backup by its date and, when shown, its size.
- Start the restore and keep the iPhone connected until it finishes.
Restore with Apple Devices on Windows
- Connect the new iPhone to the Windows PC.
- Open Apple Devices and select the iPhone.
- Choose the restore-backup command.
- Select the appropriate backup and begin restoring.
- Keep the cable connected until the process is complete.
Restore with iTunes
- Connect the new iPhone and open iTunes.
- Select the iPhone in iTunes.
- Choose the command to restore from a backup.
- Pick the backup you want by date and proceed.
- Leave the iPhone connected until iTunes reports that the restore has finished.
Understand the encrypted-backup limitation
Apple says an unencrypted computer backup does not transfer Health and Activity data. If those records matter, determine whether the backup was encrypted and whether you know its encryption password before starting the restore. A backup that cannot be unlocked cannot supply data protected by that password.
Use a wired iPhone-to-iPhone transfer
Apple also documents a wired migration option. A cable can be useful when you prefer a physical connection or want to avoid relying on a wireless link, but connector compatibility is model-specific.
- Identify the connector on the old iPhone.
- Identify the connector on the new iPhone.
- Use a cable or adapter designed to connect those two models directly.
- Start the iPhone setup and follow the migration prompts after connecting the devices.
- Keep the connection secure and both phones powered until the transfer finishes.
Do not assume that a cable that charges one phone can transfer data between every pair of iPhones. Check both models before buying or choosing a compatible iPhone data-transfer cable.
Move from Android with Move to iOS
For an Android-to-iPhone move, use Apple’s Move to iOS process during the new iPhone’s initial setup. This is a separate path from Quick Start, which is intended for a previous iPhone or iPad.
- Turn on the new iPhone and begin its initial setup.
- When setup offers ways to transfer apps and data, choose the Android migration option.
- Open Move to iOS on the Android phone and follow its onscreen instructions.
- Keep both phones available and connected as instructed while the selected content moves.
- Finish setting up the iPhone and allow any remaining downloads or account sign-ins to complete.
If the iPhone has already completed setup, Apple says you must erase it before using Move to iOS. Otherwise, move content manually instead of erasing the device.
What happens to photos, messages, and apps
Photos
Photos are part of the data handled by Apple’s migration and backup routes. A direct Quick Start transfer keeps the old and new phones involved until the copy completes. An iCloud-based route may make the new iPhone usable before the full library has downloaded, so check the Photos app later while the phone remains on Wi-Fi and power.

If a photo is absent, first confirm that you selected the intended backup and that the download is finished. An older backup cannot contain photos added after it was created.

Messages
Messages move according to the route and source data available to the new iPhone. Direct migration transfers the old device’s available information. A backup restore uses the messages captured in that backup, while cloud-based content may continue arriving after setup.
Check several recent conversations, not only the message list, before erasing the old phone. If the newest messages are missing, verify that you did not select an outdated backup and allow the restore or download process to finish.
Apps and app data
Quick Start can transfer apps and arrange for them to be available on the new iPhone. With the iCloud-download choice, apps and related content can continue downloading in the background, so an app may not be ready immediately after setup.
App availability can also depend on the Apple Account used on the new phone and whether the app can be downloaded again. Keep the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi, sign in when prompted, and check important apps individually.

Troubleshoot common transfer problems
Quick Start does not appear
- Confirm that the previous iPhone meets Apple’s stated requirement of iOS 11 or later. A previous iPad used as the source needs iPadOS 13 or later.
- Place the devices close together and restart the setup attempt if the prompt disappears.
- Connect both phones to power and make sure the old phone is unlocked and usable.
- If Quick Start still cannot be used, switch to an existing iCloud or computer backup.
The transfer seems stuck
Do not judge progress by a fixed time estimate. Apple says network conditions and data volume affect transfer time. Keep the devices near each other and powered, and avoid interrupting the process while the progress indicator is still moving.

The new iPhone was set up too soon
If you need to restore a different iCloud backup or use Move to iOS, erase the new iPhone and restart from the Hello screen. Remember that Erase All Content and Settings removes data currently on the new phone.
The backup you need is not listed
Check that you are signing in with the Apple Account that created the backup. If several backups are available, compare their dates and sizes. A computer restore will not find an iCloud backup, and an iCloud restore will not use a local computer backup.
Health or Activity data is missing after a computer restore
Check whether the source computer backup was encrypted. Apple specifically notes that an unencrypted backup does not transfer Health and Activity data.
Apps or photos are still downloading
This is expected with an iCloud-based route. Leave the new iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and power, then check again after downloads have had time to complete. A direct transfer also may require additional time before every app is ready.
You have neither the old phone nor a backup
The documented Apple migration routes need a source: the previous device, an iCloud backup, or a computer backup. Without one of those sources, there is no transfer set to restore. Check whether important content already exists in an account-based service you can access, and recover the old phone or locate its backup before erasing anything else.
Verify the new iPhone before wiping the old one
- Open Photos and check recent pictures as well as older albums.
- Open Messages and inspect several recent conversations.
- Open the apps you rely on most and confirm that they are installed, signed in, and usable.
- Check that any continuing download indicators have finished or are still progressing.
- Confirm that the new iPhone is using the intended Apple Account.
- Only after these checks should you erase, trade in, or give away the old iPhone.
For most iPhone-to-iPhone moves, start with Quick Start. Choose direct transfer when you can keep both phones available, choose the iCloud download option when using the new phone sooner matters, and use an iCloud or computer restore when the old phone is not available. Android users should use Move to iOS before completing iPhone setup.
