Yes—you can move your The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time progress to another Nintendo Switch. Use Nintendo’s nearby-console save transfer when the original Switch is available; it does not require Nintendo Switch Online, but it removes the transferred save from the source console. If the old console is unavailable, restore a Nintendo Switch Online cloud backup instead. The cloud download replaces the destination’s existing save for that game.
Ocarina of Time is accessed through Nintendo 64 Classics, so an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership is required to open that game library. That requirement is separate from the save-transfer requirements.

Choose the right transfer method
Your best option depends on whether you still have the old Switch and whether a cloud backup already exists.
| Decision | Nearby save transfer | Save Data Cloud restore |
|---|---|---|
| Is the old Switch required? | Yes | No, provided an eligible backup exists |
| Nintendo Switch Online membership | Not required | Required to access Save Data Cloud |
| Network requirements | Both consoles online and near each other | Internet access and sign-in to the Nintendo Account that owns the backup |
| What happens to the source save? | The selected save is sent and deleted from the old console | The cloud backup remains available according to Nintendo’s cloud rules |
| What happens to the destination save? | The transferred save becomes the save for that user and software | The download replaces the destination’s existing save for that game |
| Best use | The old Switch is working and in your possession | The old Switch is lost, damaged, unavailable, or already reset |
Do not start by resetting, formatting, trading in, or deleting the old Switch. Verify the new console can open Ocarina of Time and that your progress is present before changing anything on the source system.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
What you need before starting
- Two working Switch consoles for a nearby transfer, or one compatible destination console for a cloud restore.
- Internet access. Nearby transfer requires both consoles to be online and physically near one another.
- The same Nintendo Account linked to the relevant user on both consoles for a nearby transfer.
- For a cloud restore, an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and an existing Save Data Cloud backup for the relevant user and software.
- Access to Nintendo 64 Classics. Nintendo currently requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack for that library.
- Current system software on both consoles is recommended before beginning. Updates can change the wording of menus and prompts.
You do not need a physical Ocarina of Time cartridge, a microSD card, an accessory, or a separate cable for Nintendo’s documented save-transfer process.
Method 1: Transfer the save directly between nearby Switch consoles
Use this method when the old Switch is available. Nintendo’s nearby-transfer feature moves a selected user’s save to the other console without requiring Nintendo Switch Online.
1. Prepare both consoles
- Charge or connect both Switch systems to power so neither shuts down during the transfer.
- Install the latest available system update on each console.
- Connect both consoles to the internet and place them near each other.
- Confirm that the receiving console has a user linked to the same Nintendo Account as the user whose Ocarina of Time progress you want to move.
A nearby transfer is account- and user-specific. Selecting a different user can make the expected save appear to be missing even when the transfer itself worked.

2. Start the send operation on the old Switch
- Open the HOME Menu on the source console.
- Go to System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data.
- Select Send Save Data to Another Console.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to choose the user whose save should be sent.
- When the software list appears, select the entry corresponding to your Ocarina of Time software and continue.
Nintendo’s general instructions do not specify the exact text used for the Ocarina of Time entry in every version of the save-transfer list. Select the relevant Ocarina of Time or Nintendo 64 Classics entry that the console displays; do not assume a particular label if your menu uses different wording.
3. Accept the transfer on the new Switch
- On the target console, open the corresponding Transfer Your Save Data screen.
- Choose the receiving option shown on that console.
- Follow the pairing and confirmation prompts on both systems.
- Leave both consoles powered on and nearby until the transfer-complete message appears.
Nintendo varies some remaining screens depending on the source and target system type. Follow the active prompts rather than looking for a button name from a different model or software version.
4. Verify before changing the old console
- Launch Nintendo 64 Classics on the new Switch and open Ocarina of Time.
- Select the transferred user if the game or service asks you to choose one.
- Check for your expected in-game save and confirm that you can load it.
- Only after verification should you reset, sell, trade in, or otherwise dispose of the old console.
The nearby operation is a move, not a duplicate. Nintendo says the selected save is deleted from the source after it is sent. For the official prerequisites and menu route, see Nintendo’s “How to Transfer Your Save Data To a Nearby Console” support article.
“Note: A Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required to use this feature.”

Method 2: Restore Ocarina of Time from Save Data Cloud
Cloud restore is useful when the old Switch is unavailable, but it only works if Nintendo already has a backup for the correct user and software. Creating a new membership today does not recreate a backup that was never uploaded.

Check the conditions first
- Sign in on the new console with the Nintendo Account that owns the backup.
- Maintain an active Nintendo Switch Online membership while accessing Save Data Cloud.
- Make sure the destination console can run the relevant Nintendo 64 Classics software.
- Check the backup’s date and time before downloading. A recent backup is preferable to an older one because it may not include your latest play session.
Nintendo says that if a membership expires, access to previous cloud backups can be restored by resubscribing within 180 days. Do not treat an expired membership as permanent access to the backups.
Download from the Ocarina of Time software menu
- Highlight the Nintendo 64 Classics software on the HOME Menu. If the service presents Ocarina of Time inside a software library, open that library as you normally would.
- Press the + or − button on the controller.
- Select Save Data Cloud.
- Choose the user associated with the backup.
- Review the available backup and its timestamp.
- Select Download Save Data and confirm the prompts.
Use the system settings route instead
- Open System Settings.
- Choose Data Management > Save Data Cloud.
- Select the relevant user.
- Choose the Nintendo 64 Classics or Ocarina of Time software entry shown on the console.
- Review the backup date and download it if it is the correct one.
The exact entry name can vary, and Nintendo’s retrieved instructions do not establish whether a particular in-game save and a Suspend Point appear as separate transferable entries. Use the list displayed on your console and verify the result in the game.
Understand the overwrite warning
Downloading a backup is not a merge. It replaces the destination console’s existing save data for that game. Nintendo’s cloud-download guidance states: “Save data downloaded from the backup will replace the existing save data on the console for that game.” Read the date carefully before confirming, because data overwritten by the download cannot be recovered through that destination copy. See the full Nintendo Save Data Cloud download instructions.

Nintendo Switch Online has two different roles here
Membership requirements are easy to confuse because Ocarina of Time uses the Nintendo 64 Classics service while Nintendo offers separate save-transfer features.
Opening Ocarina of Time
Ocarina of Time is distributed through Nintendo 64 Classics. Nintendo’s Suspend Point support information says an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership is required to access Nintendo 64 Classics. Without the required library access, the new console may not let you launch the game even if the save transfer itself completed correctly.
Moving a save locally
The nearby transfer in System Settings does not require any Nintendo Switch Online membership. You can move the save directly between consoles with internet access, proximity, and matching Nintendo Accounts.
Restoring from the cloud
Save Data Cloud is a separate service and does require an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Expansion Pack access to Nintendo 64 Classics and cloud-restore access should therefore be treated as two separate checks. A player may need Expansion Pack to open Ocarina of Time and Nintendo Switch Online to download a cloud backup, while a player using nearby transfer needs neither membership for the transfer itself.

Nintendo’s transfer pages describe software save data selected from the console’s list. They do not identify a universal, game-specific label for Ocarina of Time in that list, nor do they document whether every internal save representation is shown separately.

In-game saves
After transfer or cloud download, open Ocarina of Time and check the game’s normal load screen. Your progress should be evaluated inside the game rather than by relying only on a generic software-list label.
Suspend Points
Nintendo 64 Classics supports Suspend Points. Nintendo’s instructions explain that you create a point from the Suspend Menu and can overwrite one of four slots. A Suspend Point is a service feature for freezing a particular game state; it is not necessarily identical to the game’s ordinary in-game save.
Because the retrieved Nintendo instructions do not explain whether a Suspend Point and an in-game save appear as separate entries during transfer, do not assume that moving one visible item guarantees a particular Suspend Point will be present. Check both the game’s load screen and the Suspend Menu after restoring your data.

Nintendo supports some save-data compatibility between Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, but compatibility is software-dependent. A system-level transfer can therefore succeed while a particular game or service still has an availability limitation on the destination.
- Confirm that the destination Switch 2 can access the Nintendo 64 Classics software and Ocarina of Time under the same Nintendo Account.
- Check the software entry shown in the transfer screens on both systems.
- Use Nintendo’s Switch-to-Switch 2 transfer guide for the current system-transfer flow.
- After the transfer, launch the game and verify the actual save before resetting the original Switch.
Do not infer compatibility solely from the fact that another Switch title transferred successfully. Nintendo’s compatibility status is specific to the software.
Troubleshooting when the save does not appear
The Ocarina of Time entry is missing
- Confirm that you selected the same user who played the game on the old console.
- Check that both consoles use the same Nintendo Account for that user.
- Open the relevant Nintendo 64 Classics software and verify that the game is available on the destination.
- Look for a software or service entry whose wording differs from “Ocarina of Time”; Nintendo’s general transfer page does not promise one fixed label.
- For cloud restore, verify that you are signed in to the account that created the backup and that the backup date is shown.
The local transfer will not pair
- Bring the consoles closer together and confirm that both have internet access.
- Install pending system updates, then restart the transfer screens.
- Make sure the target has a user linked to the same Nintendo Account as the source user.
- Do not begin a second transfer from another user until the first attempt has fully stopped.
The cloud backup is unavailable
- Check whether the Nintendo Switch Online membership is active.
- Confirm that the correct user is selected in Save Data Cloud.
- Remember that cloud restore requires a backup made before the old console became unavailable; membership alone cannot create a historical save.
- If the membership expired, determine whether you are still within Nintendo’s 180-day resubscription window for restoring access to prior backups.
The new console already has newer progress
Do not download an older cloud backup until you have decided that replacing the destination save is acceptable. Nintendo’s warning says the destination data for that game is replaced and the overwritten copy cannot be recovered. If you still have the old console, nearby transfer is also destructive to the source copy, so verify which version is current before selecting a method.
The transfer finished but the game starts without the expected progress
- Close and reopen Nintendo 64 Classics, then select the intended user.
- Check the ordinary in-game save menu as well as any Suspend Point slots.
- Verify that you restored or transferred the correct software entry and not another user’s data.
- If the source console is still available, do not reset it while you investigate; it may be the only remaining copy after a failed or misidentified attempt.
Safe order of operations
For the lowest-risk move, use this sequence:
- Keep the old Switch intact.
- Update both systems and sign in with matching account information.
- Prefer nearby transfer when the old console works and is present.
- Use cloud restore only after checking the backup timestamp and understanding the overwrite warning.
- Launch Ocarina of Time on the new console and load the expected progress.
- Check Suspend Points separately if you used them.
- Only then reset, sell, trade in, or erase the old console.
This process separates three issues that are often mistaken for one another: access to the Nintendo 64 Classics library, moving save data between consoles, and downloading a cloud backup. Treating each as its own check prevents a missing membership or an overwritten destination save from being mistaken for a failed transfer.
