How to Transfer Nintendo Switch Save Data to Switch 2 Before Playing 007 First Light

Complete Nintendo’s transfer before starting 007 First Light. If Switch 2 is still in its first-time setup, use the full System Transfer. If you have already configured it and only need a particular save, use Nintendo’s nearby-console save-data transfer. Both consoles must be available, online, close together, and using the same Nintendo Account for the relevant user.

Choose the right transfer method

Nintendo provides two practical routes. The full System Transfer is designed for a new Switch 2 and moves a broader set of content, including digital games, certain save data and settings. Nearby-console save-data transfer is better when Switch 2 is already set up or when you want to move only selected games’ saves.

Prepare both consoles before transferring

Do not begin the transfer immediately after opening the game. Complete these checks first so the process is not interrupted and the correct profile is used.

Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
  • Keep the original Switch. Do not sell, reset or give it away until you have launched the game on Switch 2 and verified the intended save.
  • Connect both systems to power or charge them fully. A shutdown during transfer can leave you without a usable copy until the process is repeated or recovered through Nintendo’s support procedures.
  • Put both consoles online. The transfer process uses an internet connection, even though the consoles should also be physically near one another for the local handoff.
  • Place the systems close together. Keep them in the same room, powered on and awake while the transfer runs.
  • Check the user profiles. On each console, create or select the corresponding user linked to the same Nintendo Account. Nintendo requires this account match for save-data transfer.
  • Install system updates. Update both consoles before moving data, then install the latest available version of 007 First Light on Switch 2 when it becomes available.
  • Do not start a new campaign on Switch 2 first. Transfer the old data before creating new progress, which avoids confusion about which profile or save the game is loading.

Nintendo warns that some Switch games may not be fully compatible with Switch 2 and that compatibility can change as updates arrive. An update can therefore affect the result even if the transfer itself completes successfully.

Method 1: use System Transfer during Switch 2 setup

Choose this route if Switch 2 has not completed its initial setup. Nintendo’s Switch 2 Transfer Guide says the process can move digital games, certain save data and settings from the old system. At least one user profile on the source Switch must be linked to a Nintendo Account, and the consoles need an active internet connection.

  1. Start Switch 2. Turn on the new console and begin the initial setup.
  2. Select the transfer option. When setup asks whether you want to transfer from a Nintendo Switch, choose that option rather than skipping it.
  3. Prepare the source console. Turn on the original Switch, connect it to the internet and keep it near Switch 2. Connect both systems to power if possible.
  4. Follow the pairing prompts. Switch 2 will guide you through identifying the source console. Confirm the old Switch when it appears.
  5. Choose the source user. Select the user profile that is linked to the Nintendo Account you intend to use for 007 First Light on Switch 2.
  6. Approve the transfer on both screens. Read the notices about what will move and confirm on each console when requested.
  7. Wait for completion. Do not launch a game, put either console to sleep or disconnect power while the transfer is running.
  8. Finish setup and check the destination profile. Confirm that the intended user, transferred settings and relevant game data are present on Switch 2.
  9. Install or download the game. Use the same Nintendo Account that owns the digital title, or insert the compatible game card when applicable. Apply every available update before starting.
  10. Open the game only after verification. Launch 007 First Light, select the transferred user and check whether the expected campaign data appears before making new progress.

Cloud-compatible save data for Nintendo-Account-linked users can remain on the original Switch while also being copied to Switch 2. Nintendo notes that data belonging to users who are not linked to a Nintendo Account, and saves for games that do not support Save Data Cloud Backup, may be moved and deleted from the old console. That is why the original system should stay untouched until you have checked the result.

Method 2: transfer only selected save data nearby

Use this method when Switch 2 is already configured or when moving the entire console would be unnecessary. Nintendo says the consoles must both be online and near each other, the same Nintendo Account must be linked to the user on each console, and a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required.

  1. Open the destination menu on Switch 2. Go to System Settings, open the save-data management section and choose the option to receive save data from another console.
  2. Open the source menu on the original Switch. In the corresponding save-data management area, choose the option to send save data to another console.
  3. Select the matching user. Choose the profile linked to the same Nintendo Account on both systems.
  4. Select the game save. If 007 First Light is listed, select its save data. If it is not listed, check the account, game installation and compatibility information before proceeding; do not substitute a different user’s save.
  5. Confirm the send and receive prompts. Approve the operation on both consoles. Keep them online, close together and connected to power.
  6. Wait until the transfer finishes. Leave both systems undisturbed until Nintendo reports completion.
  7. Install and update the Switch 2 game. Use the current Switch 2 software build and any available game update.
  8. Verify in the game. Start the title with the transferred user and confirm the expected save before playing beyond the opening screens.

Nearby-console transfer is selective, not a replacement for the broader setup migration. It does not move all of your old system’s settings and purchases simply because one game save was transferred.

What the transfer does—and does not—prove about 007 First Light

Nintendo’s documentation describes general Switch-to-Switch-2 transfer and warns that individual games can have compatibility limitations. It does not, in the available guidance, establish that every pre-existing 007 First Light campaign save will load in the Switch 2 release.

IO Interactive’s FAQ describes online cross-progression for the game’s Tac Sim clearance level, Tac Sim XP, Tac Sim inventory, Tac Sim challenges and IOI Account entitlements. The same FAQ explicitly excludes campaign progression, achievements, collectibles, leaderboards, ownership, downloadable-content ownership and ownership-linked unlocks.

That distinction matters: an IOI Account login is not evidence that a campaign save will appear on another platform or in another version. Nintendo save-data transfer is the first step to try for a Nintendo Switch save, but you should still check the game’s current compatibility or support notes after installing the Switch 2 build. If the title-specific guidance changes, follow the newer instructions from Nintendo or IO Interactive.

Verify the result before you begin a new campaign

A completed transfer notification only confirms that Nintendo’s transfer process finished. It does not confirm that the game has accepted the save. Use this short verification sequence:

  1. Open System Settings on Switch 2 and confirm that the intended user profile is present.
  2. Check that 007 First Light is installed from the same Nintendo Account associated with the transferred save.
  3. Apply the latest system and game updates offered by Switch 2.
  4. Start the game with the transferred user, not a newly created profile.
  5. Look for the expected campaign slot or continuation option.
  6. Load it far enough to confirm the correct progress, then close the game normally.
  7. Keep the original Switch powered off but available until this check succeeds.

If the game opens with no campaign data, do not overwrite the old console or create substantial new progress while troubleshooting. Preserve the source save so Nintendo or IO Interactive support can examine the situation if a title-specific compatibility issue is confirmed.

Troubleshooting common transfer problems

The transfer option does not appear during setup

  • Confirm that you are still in Switch 2’s initial setup. The full System Transfer option is intended for that stage.
  • Connect both consoles to the internet and install pending system updates.
  • Make sure the original Switch has at least one user linked to a Nintendo Account.
  • Restart setup only after confirming that the old console and its data are still available. Do not reset the source system to make the option appear.

The consoles cannot find each other

  • Move them closer together and keep both screens awake.
  • Check that neither console has lost its internet connection.
  • Connect both to power, then retry from the corresponding send and receive menus.
  • Use the exact on-screen pairing flow rather than starting a normal wireless game connection.

The user or save is missing from the list

  • Compare the Nintendo Account linked to the user on each console. Similar display names are not sufficient; the linked account must match.
  • Exit the transfer screens and sign in with the intended profile before trying again.
  • Check whether the game save belongs to a different local user. Nintendo’s transfer is user-specific.
  • If the save is not listed after the account check, treat that as a possible compatibility or save-support limitation rather than selecting another user’s data.

The transfer finishes but the campaign is absent

  • Verify that you launched the Switch 2 game with the same user whose save was transferred.
  • Install all available updates and restart the game.
  • Confirm that the transferred item was the game’s save data, not merely the game download or an account entitlement.
  • Review current Nintendo and IO Interactive support notes. IO Interactive’s documented cross-progression excludes campaign progression, so an account login alone cannot restore that portion.
  • Keep the old Switch intact while seeking support.

The old Switch no longer shows the save

Some transfer scenarios can move and delete data from the source console, particularly for users not linked to a Nintendo Account or games outside Save Data Cloud Backup support. Do not erase the original system before transfer. If data has already disappeared and the destination copy is unusable, contact Nintendo support with both console details and the account used for the transfer.

When to perform the transfer relative to the game’s release

IO Interactive’s October 14, 2026 announcement gives the Nintendo Switch 2 release date for 007 First Light as March 18, 2027. This means a player preparing in October 2026 can transfer the console data before the game is available, then install the current game build when it releases. The transfer itself does not guarantee that a future game update will support an older campaign save.

IO Interactive says pre-orders are open through Nintendo Store, Amazon.com and selected retailers, with a Special Edition exclusive to Amazon.com. Availability, edition, price and release status can vary by region and can change before launch, so check the live listing for your territory. Those purchase details do not change the save-transfer steps.

The game’s reported sales figure—4 million units in its first three months, according to IO Interactive in 2026—describes overall sales and does not establish Nintendo Switch 2 save compatibility.

A practical decision checklist

  • Switch 2 is still in setup: choose the full System Transfer.
  • Switch 2 is already set up: use nearby-console save-data transfer.
  • You want all settings and a broader migration: use System Transfer when available.
  • You want only the 007 First Light save: use the selected-save method.
  • You do not have Nintendo Switch Online: nearby-console transfer is still available; membership is not required for that method.
  • You have only an IOI Account: do not assume it carries campaign progression. The documented cross-progression list excludes campaign saves.
  • You have not verified the result: keep the original Switch and do not begin a new campaign on Switch 2.

The safest order of operations

With both consoles available, the least risky sequence is: update both systems, link the matching Nintendo Account user, perform System Transfer during Switch 2 setup (or nearby-console transfer if setup is complete), install the current game build, launch with the transferred user, and verify the campaign before changing anything on the old console. Because Nintendo’s compatibility guidance is general and IO Interactive’s cross-progression documentation excludes campaign progression, treat the in-game save check—not an account login or a successful transfer message—as the final test.
