For a WM1AM2 or WM1ZM2, connect the player by USB, choose File Transfer in the Walkman’s Use USB for menu, and copy music either with Music Center for PC (Windows) or an Android-compatible file-transfer utility (Mac). Windows users can also drag files directly in Explorer. Put audio in the player’s Music folder, keep album and tag names consistent, and disconnect only after the copy has finished.
The two decisions that prevent most problems are choosing the correct destination—internal storage or microSD—and using a reliable data connection. Sony also warns that some USB-C-to-USB-C connections fail; when that happens, Music Center for PC with its automatic AAC-transfer option is the documented workaround.

What you need before transferring
This procedure applies to the Sony Signature Series WM1AM2 and WM1ZM2. The player appears to a computer as an Android storage device when its USB mode is set to file transfer. Prepare the following:
- The Walkman, powered on and unlocked if it asks for confirmation.
- A USB data cable. The cable must carry data, not only power. Sony supplies a cable with the player; a known-good replacement is useful for troubleshooting.
- Your music files on a Windows PC or Mac.
- For Windows Music Center transfers, Music Center for PC version 2.4 or later. Sony warns that earlier versions may not recognize the player.
- For a Mac, software designed to transfer files to an Android device. Sony’s guide describes the category rather than naming a particular utility, so check that the utility currently supports your macOS release and Android file transfer before relying on it.
Keep the computer awake during a large copy. Sleep or standby can interrupt an import, leave an incomplete file, or make the player appear to stop responding.

Choose internal storage or a microSD card
Both destinations are documented for these Walkman models. The choice affects how you manage the library rather than how the files play.
| Destination | Best for | Advantages | Trade-offs | Where to copy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Internal storage | A core library that should stay with the player | Always installed; no card handling | Not removable; available space depends on the player and existing content (Sony does not state a capacity figure in the transfer guidance) | WALKMAN > Internal shared storage > Music |
| microSD card | A library you want to remove, replace, or keep separate | Removable and expandable according to the card you install | Requires a compatible card and careful unmounting before removal; the card’s available space varies | Open the microSD card’s storage, then its Music folder |
Use one destination consistently for an album whenever possible. Splitting one album between internal storage and a card makes later housekeeping harder, especially when you rebuild the library or move the card to another device. If you do use both, decide on a rule—for example, internal storage for frequently played albums and the card for a larger archive—and apply it consistently.
Windows method 1: Music Center for PC
Music Center for PC is Sony’s documented Windows workflow. It is the better choice when you want a managed transfer queue, to select albums from a library view, or to use Music Center’s conversion behavior for formats the player cannot accept directly.
Recommended Free Tools
Install the required version
- Install or update Music Center for PC to version 2.4 or later.
- Open Music Center before connecting the Walkman if you want the application to detect it immediately.
- Keep the application open while you connect and transfer. Do not launch an older Sony music application at the same time if it might claim the USB device.
The version threshold matters: Sony says the player may not be recognized by earlier Music Center versions. If detection fails, verify the installed version before changing cables or deleting files.
Put the Walkman in file-transfer mode
- Connect the player to the PC with the USB cable.
- On the Walkman, open the USB notification and choose File Transfer under Use USB for.
- Wait for Windows and Music Center to finish detecting the device. A charging-only USB mode will not expose the storage needed for copying.
Select the destination
In Music Center, choose whether the transfer should go to the player’s internal storage or to the inserted microSD card. Confirm the destination before selecting tracks; sending files to the wrong storage location is a common reason a newly copied album seems to be missing.

Select albums or tracks and transfer
- In Music Center’s library, select the albums or individual tracks to copy.
- Choose the transfer command represented by the transfer arrow.
- Leave the Walkman connected and the computer awake until the queue reports completion.
- Open the player’s music view after the copy, or inspect its storage, to verify that the expected folders and files exist.
- Safely disconnect the player through the operating system if an eject option is offered, then unplug the cable.
Do not pull the USB Type-C cable while Music Center is writing. Sony warns that interrupting a transfer can damage data. If the transfer is large, avoid opening or editing the same source files until the queue has completed.
Automatic conversion for unsupported or troublesome transfers
The player does not support ATRAC. Music Center for PC can convert ATRAC to AAC during transfer. Conversion changes the transferred copy, so keep the original ATRAC files in your computer library if you need them later.

This setting is a compatibility workaround, not a promise that every source format will remain bit-for-bit identical.
Windows method 2: drag and drop in Explorer
You do not need Music Center to copy ordinary supported files from Windows. Sony documents direct dragging from Windows Explorer, which is useful when your folders and tags are already organized and you want a transparent copy rather than a managed library import.
- Connect the Walkman and select File Transfer in Use USB for.
- Open Windows Explorer and select the device named WALKMAN.
- For internal storage, open
Internal shared storage > Music. - For a microSD destination, open the card’s storage and then its
Musicfolder instead. - Open the source folder in another Explorer window. Select the album folder or individual tracks and drag them into the destination’s
Musicfolder. - Wait for Windows’ copy dialog to reach 100 percent. Check that the destination contains the files before disconnecting.
- Use Windows’ eject or safely-remove command when available, then unplug the cable.
Explorer does not provide Music Center’s library-oriented selection or its ATRAC-to-AAC conversion path. If a file format is not accepted, use Music Center’s conversion option or convert a working copy on the computer before copying. Never interrupt the copy simply because the progress window appears idle for a few seconds; large files and many small files can take different amounts of time.

Mac method: use an Android-compatible transfer utility
Sony’s player guide directs Mac owners to software designed to transfer files to an Android device. Sony does not designate one vendor in that guidance. Because utility support changes with macOS and Android file-transfer components, verify the utility’s current compatibility before installing it. The steps below describe the common workflow without assuming a particular product’s labels.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall- Install a current Android-compatible file-transfer utility from a source you trust. Confirm that it supports your macOS version and can write to USB-connected Android storage.
- Connect the Walkman with a data-capable USB cable.
- On the player, choose File Transfer under Use USB for.
- Open the utility and wait for the Walkman to appear. If it asks for permission to access the device, approve it on both the Mac and the player.
- Open the player’s internal storage or the microSD card, then open the
Musicfolder. - Drag organized album folders or tracks from Finder into that
Musicfolder. Keep the utility open until its copy indicator finishes. - Verify the files in the destination, use the utility’s disconnect or macOS eject control if provided, and then unplug the cable.
Different utilities expose different folder views and may handle metadata differently. Before copying a large collection, test one album and check artist, album, title, and artwork on the Walkman. If tags are altered or the device is not recognized reliably, stop and verify that the utility still supports your macOS release rather than repeatedly reconnecting the player.
Organize the source library before copying
A clean source library saves more time than reorganizing on the player. The Walkman can browse transferred content more predictably when folder names and embedded tags agree.
Use one album folder under Music
Place each album in its own folder below Music. Keep the folder name stable and readable, and avoid creating several competing copies of the same album in different locations. A simple structure is:
Music/
Artist - Album/
track files
The exact punctuation is your choice; consistency is what matters. If you use a different convention, apply it to the whole library rather than mixing artist-first, title-first, and date-first schemes.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Normalize artist, album, and title metadata
Before transfer, make the source tags agree with the folder naming you chose. Check at least the artist, album, and track title fields. Correcting a misspelled artist or an inconsistent album name on the computer prevents duplicate-looking entries and makes sorting easier on the player. Make these edits in the source library, then transfer the corrected files; changing a folder name alone does not necessarily change embedded metadata.
Add optional album art correctly
Sony documents optional external album art. Give the image the same base name as the album folder. The supported image forms specified in the guide are baseline JPEG, progressive JPEG, and non-interlaced PNG. For example, if the album folder is named Artist - Album, use an image whose base name is also Artist - Album, with one of those supported extensions. Keep the image with the album’s files when you copy the folder.
If artwork does not appear, check the base name and image encoding first. A visually valid image can still fail to display if it is saved in an unsupported JPEG or PNG form, or if its name does not match the album folder.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a copied album does not appear
When a new library is missing from the Walkman’s music view, check the transfer path in this order:
- Confirm the USB mode. Reconnect and make sure Use USB for is set to File Transfer, not a charging or audio mode.
- Check the physical destination. In storage view, verify that the files are under the documented
Musicfolder on internal storage or on the microSD card you intended to use. - Verify copy completion. Compare the source folder and destination, and make sure the operating system reported success before disconnecting.
- Reconnect safely. Eject the player, unplug it, wait for the library to refresh, and then check the music application again.
- Inspect naming and tags. Correct inconsistent artist, album, or title metadata in the source files and transfer the corrected copy.
- Check artwork separately. Artwork problems do not necessarily mean the audio failed to copy; verify the file itself and the same-base-name rule.
A forum workaround is not a substitute for confirming these documented locations and completing a safe disconnect. Repeating a copy into an arbitrary folder can create duplicates without fixing the indexing problem.

USB-C transfer failures and recovery
USB-C-to-USB-C does not transfer
Sony’s support article, last modified January 19, 2026, states that transferring content may fail when the Walkman and computer are connected with a USB Type-C-to-Type-C cable. The recommendation is to use Music Center for PC and enable the automatic AAC-transfer option quoted above. If you are on Windows, this is the first software change to try.
Also test the basics: reconnect with the supplied or another known-good data cable, select File Transfer, and confirm that the computer detects the player rather than merely charging it. A cable can fit the port and still lack the data wiring required for storage access.
The copy stops or files are damaged
- Do not disconnect during a transfer. Sony warns that data may be damaged.
- Prevent the computer from sleeping or entering standby for the duration of the copy.
- Retry with a smaller album to distinguish a general connection problem from a problem with one source file.
- After a failed copy, remove only the incomplete destination copy once the player is safely disconnected, then transfer it again.
Music Center does not recognize the player
- Check that Music Center for PC is version 2.4 or later.
- Reconnect the cable and choose File Transfer on the Walkman.
- Close other software that might be using the device, then restart Music Center.
- Try another data-capable cable or USB port.
- If the player is visible in Explorer but not Music Center, use Explorer for supported files or reinstall/update Music Center before retrying its managed transfer.
Do not confuse file transfer with USB-DAC playback
The Walkman can also operate as a USB-DAC for listening to music from a computer. USB-DAC is a playback mode: the computer sends audio to the player for conversion and listening. It is not the storage-copy workflow. To transfer files, return to the Walkman’s USB controls and select File Transfer; then use Music Center, Explorer, or a Mac Android-transfer utility as appropriate.
A repeatable library workflow
For future additions, use the same sequence so every album lands in a predictable place:
- Clean the album’s artist, album, and title metadata on the computer.
- Create one album folder under
Musicand add optional same-base-name artwork in baseline JPEG, progressive JPEG, or non-interlaced PNG format. - Choose internal storage or microSD according to your library rule.
- On Windows, use Music Center for PC when you need managed selection or ATRAC conversion; use Explorer for a direct folder copy. On Mac, use a currently supported Android-compatible transfer utility.
- Set Use USB for to File Transfer, copy the folder, and wait for completion.
- Verify the destination, safely eject the Walkman, and only then unplug it.
This process keeps the computer library as the source of truth. If you later replace a card or reset the player, you can rebuild the same folder structure instead of trying to reconstruct it from an inconsistent device library.
