How to Transfer Music to a Sony Walkman NW-ZX900 and Organize Albums Correctly

The reliable method is straightforward: connect the NW-ZX900 with a USB-C data cable, unlock it, choose File Transfer, and copy your music into WALKMAN > Internal shared storage > Music (or the microSD card’s Music folder). Album folders make the files easy to manage, but the Walkman’s library groups albums primarily from embedded tags. Set Album Artist, Album, Artist, track number, disc number, and year consistently before copying.

The NW-ZX900 is an Android-based Walkman with a 5-inch display. Sony’s US product page accessed in 2026 lists approximately 33 GB of actual available internal storage after system use and a price of $1,899.99; availability, delivery estimates, and price can change. The instructions below apply to music you own or are licensed to use.

Where music belongs on the NW-ZX900

When the player is connected in file-transfer mode, Windows normally shows a device named WALKMAN. The standard destination is:

WALKMAN > Internal shared storage > Music

If you use a microSD card, open the card’s storage in the same device view and choose its Music folder. Keep the default folder name. Do not create a replacement folder with a different spelling, and do not place tracks in arbitrary Android or system directories.

A useful hierarchy is:

Music/
  Artist Name/
    2024 - Album Title/
      01 - Track Title.flac
      02 - Track Title.flac

The hierarchy is mainly for file management. The Walkman’s album and artist views can combine files from different folders when their metadata matches, or split one album when the tags differ. Folder names alone cannot correct inconsistent tags.

Transfer music from Windows with File Explorer

File Explorer gives you the clearest view of the actual destination, available space, and copy status. Use the supplied USB Type-C cable whenever possible and connect the player directly to the computer rather than through an unpowered hub.

1. Connect and unlock the player

  1. Turn on the NW-ZX900 and unlock its screen.
  2. Connect it directly to a computer USB port with the supplied USB Type-C cable.
  3. Wait for the USB notification. When Use USB for appears, select File Transfer, then tap OK.

If no notification appears, open Settings > Connected devices > USB, select File Transfer, and confirm. The player must remain unlocked long enough for the computer to establish the connection.

2. Open the Music folder

  1. Open Windows File Explorer.
  2. Select WALKMAN in the navigation pane.
  3. Open Internal shared storage > Music.
  4. For a card-based library, open the microSD card’s storage and then its Music folder instead.

3. Copy artists, albums, or tracks

  1. In another File Explorer window, select the artist folders, album folders, or individual tracks you want to transfer.
  2. Drag them into the Walkman’s Music folder, or use copy and paste.
  3. Watch the Windows transfer dialog until every file has finished copying. Large lossless files can take longer than a small collection.
  4. Use Windows’ eject command before unplugging the cable. Never disconnect while the copy dialog is active or the player is still writing data.

You can copy a complete artist folder, an album folder, or selected tracks. Keeping one folder per album makes later maintenance easier, but it does not replace correct Album, Album Artist, and track tags.

Transfer from macOS or another desktop system

Sony’s current workflow is based on USB file transfer and a computer file browser. On macOS, connect the unlocked Walkman, choose File Transfer, and open the mounted Walkman storage in the file-transfer utility available on your Mac. Copy the same artist-and-album structure into the appropriate Music folder.

The exact browser and mounting behavior varies with the macOS version and the transfer utility. If the Walkman is not visible, return to the player and verify Settings > Connected devices > USB > File Transfer, then reconnect it directly. Keep the device in file-transfer mode until the copy is complete, eject the mounted storage in macOS, and only then unplug the cable.

Prepare tags before copying

Embedded metadata determines how a music app or the Walkman’s library labels and groups tracks. Check these fields before transferring a large collection:

Sony NW-A306 Walkman 32GB Hi-Res Portable Digital Music Player, Black
  • Wi-Fi compatible for direct download and streaming
  • Made with a rigid aluminum frame and gold solder inside a precisely engineered chassis
  • Up to 36 hours of 44.1KHz FLAC playback
  • Supported by Android
  • Connect to a PC to access your music collection
  • Album Artist: use one consistent value for every track in an album. For a compilation, use a shared value such as the compilation name rather than a different performer on every track.
  • Album: spell the album title identically on every track, including punctuation and edition wording.
  • Artist: retain the performing artist for each track.
  • Track number: enter the correct sequence, including leading-zero formatting if your tag editor uses it.
  • Disc number: set this for multi-disc releases so disc two does not merge into disc one.
  • Year: use a consistent release year for the edition represented by the files.

Do not split one album across variations such as “The Band,” “Band,” and “The Band feat. Guest” in the Album Artist field unless you intentionally want separate library entries. Likewise, an album titled with and without a subtitle can appear as two albums. Correcting tags at the source is faster than repeatedly moving files and rescanning the player.

Compilations and guest performers

Compilations are the most common cause of an album appearing as many separate entries. Set the same Album, Album Artist, disc number, and year on every track, while leaving each track’s individual Artist intact. Guest performers can remain in the Artist field without changing the shared Album Artist value.

Multi-disc albums

Enter both track and disc numbers. A two-disc release should have disc 1 and disc 2 tags rather than resetting every track to disc 1. If the player still sorts unexpectedly, inspect the tags on every file for one outlier with a missing or differently spelled value.

Organize folders for a library that stays manageable

Use one top-level Music folder, then artist folders, then album folders. A date prefix such as 2024 - Album Title can make a folder list chronological, but it does not change the album name shown by the player. Keep filenames readable and consistent, for example 01 - Track Title.flac.

Do not scatter tracks from one album among several artist folders unless your own file-management needs require it. A clean hierarchy helps you find and replace files, make backups, and move a library to another device. The library view, however, still follows metadata, so fix tags rather than relying on folder rearrangement to solve grouping problems.

Add album artwork that the Walkman can display

For folder-based cover art, Sony instructs you to give the image the same filename as the album folder, while retaining the image extension, and place it inside that album folder. For example:

Music/
  Artist Name/
    2024 - Album Title/
      2024 - Album Title.jpg
      01 - Track Title.flac

Sony lists baseline JPEG, progressive JPEG, non-interlaced PNG, and interlaced PNG as supported displayed cover-art formats. If artwork is missing, check all of these details:

  • The image filename matches the album-folder name exactly, including spaces, punctuation, and capitalization.
  • The image is inside that album folder, not only in the artist folder or Music root.
  • The extension is a supported JPEG or PNG variant.
  • The album’s files are not split between folders with slightly different names.

Artwork embedded in audio files can also be useful for software that reads tags, but the folder-image naming rule is the Sony-documented check when folder artwork is not appearing.

Internal storage or microSD?

Sony documents both internal shared storage and microSD as transfer destinations. The accessed transfer guide does not state a maximum microSD capacity for the NW-ZX900, so verify the limit in the exact regional specification or help guide before buying a particular card size.

Destination Available space Portability Best use
Internal shared storage Approximately 33 GB is available after system use, according to Sony’s product information accessed in 2026. Always installed; moving the library requires another transfer. A smaller everyday collection and apps or files that need to remain on the player.
microSD Music folder Depends on the card; the cited transfer guide does not state the NW-ZX900’s maximum supported capacity. Can be moved between compatible devices, subject to their support and file organization. A larger library or a collection you want to manage separately from system storage.

Before a long transfer, check the free space shown for the selected destination. A copy can stop when the internal storage or card is full even though the computer still has plenty of free space.

Choosing a transfer workflow

Workflow Metadata control Batch-transfer convenience Troubleshooting visibility
Windows File Explorer You prepare tags in your own music files and copy the folders without an intervening library database. Drag complete artist folders, album folders, or selected tracks directly. High: the destination path, remaining space, and Windows copy errors are visible.
Music Center for PC Its exact metadata controls and behavior are not specified in Sony’s transfer-folder instructions; inspect the program’s own library settings before relying on it for tag changes. Useful if you prefer an application-managed library, but the exact batch-transfer steps depend on that program’s version and settings. If a transfer behaves unexpectedly, switch to direct folder copying so you can see the actual Music folder and file-level errors.

For a first transfer or a collection that needs careful cleanup, File Explorer is the most transparent route because it exposes the folder Sony documents. An application workflow can be convenient after your tags and folder structure are already consistent, but it should not obscure where the files are being written.

Troubleshoot recognition and transfer failures

The USB prompt never appears

  • Unlock the Walkman.
  • Open Settings > Connected devices > USB.
  • Select File Transfer and confirm.
  • Disconnect and reconnect after changing the mode if the computer still does not react.

Windows does not show WALKMAN

  • Connect directly to a computer USB port.
  • Avoid an unpowered USB hub.
  • Try a different USB port.
  • Use the supplied USB-C cable if available. Sony warns that some third-party USB-C-to-USB-C cables may not support transfer.
  • Confirm that the player is unlocked and still set to File Transfer.

The copy stops or fails

  • Check free space on the internal shared storage or the selected microSD card.
  • Confirm that you opened the intended destination’s Music folder.
  • Retry with the supplied cable and a direct port.
  • Copy a small album first. If that succeeds, continue in smaller batches to identify a problematic file or a storage limit.

Albums merge or split unexpectedly

Inspect the tags, not only the folders. Normalize Album Artist, Album, track number, and disc number across every track. One file with a different spelling, missing disc number, or alternate edition title can create a second album entry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Artwork is missing

Rename the image to exactly match the album-folder name, keep it in that folder, and use baseline or progressive JPEG, or non-interlaced or interlaced PNG. Check for an accidental double extension such as Album.jpg.jpg and confirm that the album files are not divided among differently named folders.

What not to do

  • Do not rename the default Music folder.
  • Do not copy tracks into unrelated system or application folders.
  • Do not format the Walkman from the computer as a first troubleshooting step.
  • Do not unplug the USB cable while data is moving.
  • Do not assume every USB-C cable carries data; some third-party USB-C-to-USB-C cables may fail for transfer.

Safe disconnect and library checks

  1. Wait for the computer’s copy operation to finish completely.
  2. Eject the Walkman or mounted storage using the operating system’s eject command.
  3. Unplug the cable only after the computer confirms it is safe.
  4. On the player, allow the library to update, then check an album with multiple tracks, a compilation, a multi-disc release, and artwork.

If a newly copied album is not immediately visible, give the player time to scan the files, then recheck the tags and destination folder before copying the same files again. Duplicate transfers can create confusing parallel folders without fixing the underlying metadata.

Copyright and private-use limits

Transfer music you own or are licensed to use. Sony’s guide states that transferred music is limited to private use; other uses require permission from the copyright holders. Copying files to a personal Walkman does not grant permission to redistribute, publicly perform, or share them.
