To copy a large video file from a phone to a VPS in India, connect to the server over SFTP/SSH and upload the file to the intended directory. If the connection drops, some clients can resume a partial transfer, but behavior depends on the client and whether the remote partial file matches the original. Copying a file to a VPS is not the same as uploading or publishing it on YouTube: the destination and workflow differ.
Choose the transfer route
| Method | Destination | Strength | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| SFTP/SSH from the phone | VPS filesystem | Direct transfer over encrypted SSH transport | Resume behavior, phone file access, and background operation vary by client and device. |
| Resumable object-storage upload, then copy to VPS | Cloud bucket, then VPS | Google Cloud Storage supports resumable uploads for large files and slow connections. | Adds an account, storage, permissions, and potentially transfer costs; check the charges that apply to your setup. |
| YouTube Data API resumable upload | YouTube | Can resume an interrupted publishing upload from the server-reported range. | Uploads to YouTube, not to the VPS filesystem. |
For the simplest direct route, use an SFTP-capable Android app. If you prefer a terminal, Termux is an Android terminal emulator and Linux environment; its project documentation describes using OpenSSH to access remote servers and lists rsync as available. See Termux. SFTP runs over SSH, which encrypts the transfer. OpenSSH’s sftp supports an attempt to resume a partial transfer with -a, subject to the same-file caveat described below: OpenSSH sftp manual.

Prepare the VPS and phone
Collect the VPS connection details
Before starting, get the SSH/SFTP hostname or IP address, port, username, authentication method, and destination directory from your VPS provider or administrator. The server may use a port other than the default, so enter the configured port rather than assuming one. Check the provider’s file-size or bandwidth limits and confirm that the VPS has enough free disk space for the entire file. A provider’s Android transfer guidance also recommends stable Wi-Fi, checking free storage, and avoiding aggressive app sleep; these are practical recommendations, not guarantees for every device or app. See Hostinger’s Android-to-Linux guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsLocate the video on Android
Find the actual recording in a file picker that the transfer app can access. Android storage rules mean a terminal or file-transfer app may not be able to read another app’s private folder. If the file is not visible, use Android’s system picker to grant access where supported, or copy/export the recording to a shared location that the SFTP client can browse. Do not assume that granting access to one folder exposes every app’s private data. Android documents storage access and app-specific locations at Android data and file storage.

Upload directly with SFTP
- Open the SFTP app. Create a connection using the VPS hostname or IP, the port supplied for that server, and your SSH username. Select the authentication method configured for your account, such as a password or SSH key. Do not share private keys or passwords.
- Connect and verify the remote directory. Browse to the intended upload directory and confirm that your account can write there. If the connection is refused, verify the host, port, server firewall rules, and whether SSH/SFTP access is enabled.
- Select and upload the local file. Use the app’s file picker to select the recording, then start the upload. Keep the phone on reliable Wi-Fi and connected to power for a long transfer. Avoid force-closing the app; Android battery-management settings may pause some apps in the background.
- Check that the transfer completed. Compare the remote file’s size with the phone’s local file size. For stronger verification, generate a cryptographic hash on both devices and compare the results when practical. Hashing is an optional integrity check; the available mobile method depends on the apps and tools you use.
Using OpenSSH from Termux
After installing the OpenSSH package in Termux, connect with the server’s actual username, hostname, and port. For example, if the configured port is 2222:
sftp -P 2222 [email protected]
At the sftp> prompt, change the remote directory with cd, inspect it with pwd or ls, and upload the file with put. Quote paths that contain spaces:

- Note: Make sure your smartphone is equipped with OTG function and need to open OTG function in Settings when you plug memory stick, then you can transfer easily data bewteen different devices
put "/path/to/My recording.mp4"
The path must be one Termux can actually access; Android app-private storage may not be visible to it. To attempt resumption after an interrupted transfer, use sftp -a -P 2222 [email protected] and issue the same put command. OpenSSH’s -a option assumes the partial remote file corresponds to the same local file. If you replaced or edited the local recording, remove or rename the partial remote copy before uploading the new version to avoid a corrupted result. Consult the OpenSSH sftp manual for option details.
If a direct upload is unreliable
Stage the file in resumable cloud storage
Google Cloud recommends resumable uploads for large files and slow or unstable connections. The upload is sent in multiple requests, so a communication failure need not force a restart from byte zero; a resumable session remains active for up to one week. Google’s documentation also covers automatic resumable uploads with its CLI and integrity checks for completed uploads: Cloud Storage resumable uploads and Cloud Storage data validation.

This route requires a phone app or workflow that can upload to a bucket, then a separate transfer from that bucket to the VPS. Review account permissions, storage charges, and any egress or transfer charges for your particular setup; costs depend on your configuration. Treat the resumable session URI as a secret: Google says it acts as an authentication token, so share it cautiously and only over HTTPS.
Use YouTube’s resumable upload only to publish to YouTube
If the goal is to publish the recording on YouTube, rather than store it on the VPS, the YouTube Data API has a resumable upload protocol. It creates an upload session, accepts the file bytes, and lets a client check the upload state and resume from the server-reported range after an interruption. Google identifies large files and unstable or mobile-originating connections as suitable cases. This process places the video on YouTube, not in your VPS directory. See YouTube Data API resumable uploads.

Choose an India VPS for the actual workload
Choose a VPS by checking the region actually offered, usable disk space, network-transfer policy, access method, and budget. A provider page describes using an India VPS as a file server or S3-compatible object store and mentions rsync, rclone, or Restic over SSH; that is the provider’s description, not independent performance evidence or proof that it is the fastest or best-value option. See HostingRaja’s VPS hosting page. Confirm the region and limits directly with any provider before committing; no transfer speed, best provider, or data-residency guarantee follows from the location label alone.

- Connection times out or is refused: Recheck the hostname, configured port, username, and whether the provider or administrator permits SSH/SFTP connections. A non-default port is possible.
- Authentication fails: Confirm the account name and the required password or key. Ensure you are using the credential for SSH/SFTP, not a VPS control-panel login unless the provider explicitly says they are the same.
- Permission denied when uploading: Confirm the remote directory and that your account has write permission there. Try the assigned home or upload directory rather than a system folder.
- Not enough space: Check free VPS disk space and remove or relocate files only if safe. Also check whether the VPS plan or provider imposes storage or transfer limits.
- The file is missing from the phone app: Browse through the system file picker or export the recording to an accessible shared folder. Android app-private storage is not universally visible to terminal and transfer apps.
- The transfer pauses when the screen is off: Keep the app active, connect the phone to power, and review battery-optimization settings for that app. Device and app behavior varies, so do not treat background transfer as guaranteed.
- Resume produces a bad file: OpenSSH’s resume attempt relies on the partial remote file matching the local file. If the source changed, remove or rename the partial file and make a fresh upload.
- The upload reached YouTube instead of the VPS, or vice versa: Confirm the destination before starting. SFTP writes to the VPS filesystem; YouTube’s API upload publishes to YouTube.
