To move your Kindle books and reading progress to a replacement Kindle, register it to the same Amazon account that owns the books, connect it to Wi-Fi, and run a sync. The books appear in your cloud library; download the ones you want available offline. A missing title can usually be delivered from your Amazon account’s content library.

What transfers to a new Kindle?

  • Purchased Kindle books: These are associated with the Amazon account that bought them. They can be downloaded to a Kindle registered to that account; you do not need to copy them directly from the old Kindle.
  • Reading position, notes, and highlights: Amazon says Sync backs up this data to its servers and makes saved data available on Kindle devices and apps linked to the account. The devices need an internet connection, and sync must be enabled. Amazon Kindle Help: Update Your Sync Settings for Kindle
  • Downloaded books: A cloud-library book is not necessarily stored on the new device yet. Download it from the Library to read offline.
  • Collections: Collection organization and downloading book files are separate. Collections made on a device or the website do not automatically download to every other device.

Set up the new Kindle and sync it

  1. Connect the new Kindle to Wi-Fi and register it to the Amazon account used to purchase the books. The account matters: a Kindle registered to a different account will not show the purchasing account’s library as its own.
  2. From the home screen, open Quick Actions or the menu and select Sync or Sync and Check for Items. Labels vary by device and software. Amazon’s instructions say to connect to the internet and sync to retrieve pending books and back up the furthest page read. Amazon Kindle Help: Sync Your Kindle E-Reader
  3. Open Library and choose All rather than a view limited to downloaded books. Tap a title to download it to the new Kindle.
  4. Open a book and check its position and annotations. If the old Kindle has not synced recently, connect it to Wi-Fi and sync it too; then sync the new Kindle.

Deliver a book that is missing

First check that the new Kindle is registered to the account that owns the purchase. Then check the Amazon content library and send the title to the device:

  1. Sign in to Manage Your Content and Devices with the account used to buy the book.
  2. Select the book and choose Deliver or Remove from Device, then select the registered new Kindle and confirm the change. Amazon Kindle Help: Send Books to Your Kindle E-Reader Manually
  3. On the new Kindle, connect to Wi-Fi and run Sync or Sync and Check for Items. The delivered book should then appear in the Library for download.

Download collection books separately

If the collection appears but its books are not downloaded, open Library, choose Collections from Sort By, and open the collection menu to download its items. Amazon notes that collections created on a registered device or its website do not automatically download to other devices. Amazon Kindle Help: Download Collections to Your Kindle E-Reader

If books or reading progress do not appear

  • Only some books show: In Library, switch to All and clear any filters that limit results to downloaded titles or a collection.
  • A purchased book is absent: Verify the account in Manage Your Content and Devices. If the title is listed, deliver it to the new Kindle and sync. If it is not listed, check the digital order and payment status. Amazon Kindle Help: Troubleshooting missing Kindle content
  • Progress, notes, or highlights are missing: Confirm both devices use the same account, connect them to the internet, and run sync. Check that sync is enabled in the device or account settings. Amazon says sync is on by default, but it can be turned off; notes, highlights, or bookmarks made while it is off may be lost when the setting is turned back on.

Personal documents and books from another account

Personal documents can be sent to Kindle through Send to Kindle, and Amazon also documents USB file transfer. Those are separate from the cloud delivery of purchased Kindle books; USB copying does not transfer the Amazon account’s synced reading position. The reviewed Amazon guidance does not establish that reading progress for every third-party or sideloaded file will migrate.

Likewise, the documented delivery steps use the account that owns the purchase. They do not establish that purchases can be merged into a different Amazon account, so do not assume that registering the replacement under another account will move the library or reading data.
