The Insta360 X4 Air gives you two reliable ways to move recordings: use the Insta360 app for a phone, or connect the camera by USB-C and copy files from DCIM > Camera01 on a Mac or Windows PC. For 360-degree clips, preserve every file created for the clip, including the paired .insv video and .lrv file, so later editing and reframing work correctly.

Choose the transfer route that fits your destination

Your destination determines the simplest workflow. The app is designed for selecting clips wirelessly and saving them to a phone. A direct USB connection exposes the camera’s storage to a computer, which is usually the clearest way to archive large files. Footage that is already inside the mobile app has a separate phone-to-computer procedure.

What you need to move Recommended route Where the files appear
Camera footage to an iPhone or Android phone Insta360 app album, using Download or Export Insta360 app gallery, or the phone’s system album after Export
Camera footage to a Mac or Windows computer Supplied USB-C data cable and File Transfer mode DCIM > Camera01 on the camera drive
Faster wireless selection of individual clips Quick File Transfer in the Insta360 app The app’s transfer destination on the phone
Footage already downloaded into the app Platform-specific file management The app’s DCIM or galleryOriginal folder

There is no manufacturer-controlled speed comparison showing that one general route is always faster. Wireless transfer is convenient for choosing a few clips, while USB copy gives a computer direct access to the camera folder and is often more practical for a large archive. Choose based on destination, file size, and whether you need the camera originals or a phone-ready export.

Insta360’s manual describes the intended result this way: “You can download camera files to your phone or PC, then use the Insta360 app or Insta360 Studio to edit and export.” See the official X4 Air User Manual for the camera’s connection and editing workflow.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Transfer X4 Air footage to an iPhone or Android phone

Use the Insta360 app album

  1. Turn on the X4 Air.
  2. Enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on the phone. Allow the Insta360 app’s requested permissions; the app may also require Location Services for discovery.
  3. Open the Insta360 app, tap the camera icon, and follow the on-screen connection and activation instructions.
  4. On the first connection, authorize the connection on the camera’s touchscreen or press the shutter button when prompted.
  5. Open the camera album in the app and select the photo or video you want.
  6. Tap Download to place the original in the Insta360 app gallery, or tap Export to save an exported copy to the phone’s own system album.
  7. Leave the app open and keep the phone unlocked until the export finishes.

The labels have different results: Download keeps the file in the app’s gallery for editing there, while Export creates a file in the phone’s regular Photos or gallery application. If you plan to reframe a 360 clip in the app, Download first or otherwise retain the original camera files; an exported, flat version is intended for viewing and sharing rather than replacing the source.

Make sure the phone has enough free storage for the selected clips and that the camera battery is adequate for the transfer. Large 360 recordings can take substantially more space than a short preview. Avoid switching to another demanding app, locking the screen, or disconnecting Wi-Fi while the app is reading the camera.

The official step-by-step instructions are in Insta360’s X4 Air File Transfer guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Quick File Transfer over Wi-Fi

The X4 Air is supported by Insta360’s Quick File Transfer feature. It is useful when you want to select media from the camera album without using a cable. It still depends on a stable camera-to-phone Wi-Fi connection, so keep the devices close and avoid moving out of range.

  1. Turn on the phone’s Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services.
  2. Connect the X4 Air to the Insta360 app.
  3. Open the desired media item from the camera album.
  4. Tap the Quick File Transfer icon and follow the in-app prompts.
  5. Keep the app running in the background until the transfer completes. Closing the app interrupts the transfer.

In manufacturer real-world testing, Quick File Transfer reached up to 20 MB/s. That is a reported maximum, not a guaranteed rate or an independent comparison; phone hardware and Wi-Fi stability affect the actual result. A weak connection, a busy phone, or a large batch can make the practical rate lower. Details and supported models are listed in the Quick File Transfer instructions.

Download versus Export: which should you use?

Choice Best for Result
Download Editing in the Insta360 app or retaining an app-accessible original File is placed in the Insta360 app gallery
Export Posting, messaging, or viewing in the phone’s normal Photos/gallery app Rendered copy is saved to the phone’s system album

Use Download when you expect to adjust the view, horizon, or other 360 settings later. Use Export when you already know the output you want to share. For important footage, keep a second copy on a computer or other storage rather than relying on the phone app alone.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Keep 360 files together

A clip recorded with the X4 Air’s 360 lens can generate a VID file with an .insv extension and an accompanying .lrv file. Copy or download every file generated for that clip. Do not keep only a preview or a single part if you intend to reframe the 360 video later. A practical approach is to place the paired files in one clearly named folder, such as 2026-10-17_hike_001, while retaining the original extensions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat the .lrv as disposable simply because it may look like a lower-resolution companion. The manufacturer’s transfer guidance is to copy all files generated for the clip. Keeping the pair together also makes it easier to identify which files belong to one recording when you later import them into Insta360 Studio.

Transfer footage directly to a Mac or Windows computer

Copy files from the camera drive

  1. Use the USB-C cable supplied with the X4 Air. The official instructions call for the supplied data cable; they do not establish a need to buy a replacement cable.
  2. Connect the camera to the Mac or Windows computer.
  3. Power on the camera.
  4. When the camera asks for a USB mode, select File Transfer.
  5. Wait for the computer to mount or recognize the camera drive. The first mount can take a moment, especially with a large card.
  6. Open the drive, then open DCIM and Camera01.
  7. Copy the photos and videos to a folder on the computer. For each 360 clip, copy all files generated for it, including the related .insv and .lrv files.
  8. After copying, compare the destination’s file count or sizes with the camera folder when practical, then eject the camera drive from the operating system before disconnecting the cable.

This direct route is separate from files that have already been downloaded into the mobile app. The camera’s own recordings are found in DCIM > Camera01; app-managed files use different folders and procedures.

Copy rather than move files so the camera card remains an intact source until you have opened a few clips on the computer. If the computer prompts you to repair, initialize, or format the card, cancel that prompt until your footage is backed up. Formatting can erase recordings.

Organize an archive that remains editable

Create a top-level folder for the shoot and preserve the camera’s original filenames inside it. Keep each 360 clip’s generated files together rather than mixing them into a single undifferentiated folder. A simple structure is:

Trip-2026-10-17/
  Camera01/
    VID_001.insv
    VID_001.lrv
    VID_002.insv
    VID_002.lrv

The exact filenames can differ; the important points are to copy all generated files and avoid renaming an individual member of a paired clip in a way that makes it difficult to identify its companion. You can add a notes file or a date-based folder without altering the original extensions.

Mac and Windows differences

The camera-side steps are the same on macOS and Windows: supplied USB-C cable, camera powered on, File Transfer, then DCIM > Camera01. The visible drive name and copy dialog differ by operating system, but neither platform needs the mobile app for a direct camera copy. Afterward, use Insta360 Studio on the computer if you need desktop editing and export.

Move footage that is already inside the Insta360 app

If you previously tapped Download in the app, the files are no longer being read directly from the camera. Use the route for your phone and computer combination below. These paths are for app-managed copies, not for a camera connected directly by USB.

iPhone to Mac

  1. Connect the iPhone to the Mac and unlock it.
  2. Open Finder and select the iPhone in the sidebar.
  3. Open the Insta360 app’s file area.
  4. Copy the app’s DCIM folder to the Mac.

For importing files from a Mac into the app, use a folder named IMPORT in uppercase. Restart the Insta360 app after the transfer if the imported media does not immediately appear. Keep the phone unlocked while Finder is copying and do not delete the phone copy until you have verified the Mac files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

iPhone to Windows

  1. Connect and unlock the iPhone.
  2. Open iTunes File Sharing.
  3. Select the Insta360 app.
  4. Save its DCIM folder to the Windows computer.

When importing into the app from Windows, use the uppercase IMPORT folder and restart the app afterward if necessary. The uppercase spelling matters; do not substitute a similarly named folder.

Android to Mac

  1. Connect the Android phone to the Mac.
  2. Open Android File Transfer.
  3. Browse to Android > data > com.arashivision.insta360akiko > files > Insta360OneR > galleryOriginal.
  4. Copy the required files to the Mac.

Android to Windows

  1. Connect the Android phone to the Windows computer.
  2. If prompted on the phone, choose file management or MTP.
  3. Open the phone’s internal storage and browse to Android > data > com.arashivision.insta360akiko > files > Insta360OneR > galleryOriginal.
  4. Copy the footage to the computer.

These app-storage paths are documented in Insta360’s File Transfer with Computer guide. They are not the path used when the camera itself is connected directly by USB. Android versions and manufacturer file managers can hide parts of the Android/data path; if that happens, use the supported Android File Transfer or MTP method rather than moving unrelated folders.

Edit and export after the transfer

Use the Insta360 app for mobile editing. On a computer, Insta360 Studio is the manufacturer’s desktop application for editing and exporting. Keep the original .insv and companion files as your source archive, then export a conventional format such as an MP4 only after you have completed reframing or other edits. An exported flat video is easier to share, but it no longer replaces the original 360 source for future reframing.

  • [360 ° Flexible Rotation Design] Comes with a rotatable lanyard ring that supports 360 ° free rotation, effectively solving the problem of twisted and tangled lanyards
  • [Wide compatibility] The ultra-thin 0.02-inch design does not block the charging port at all, and both wired and wireless charging can be used directly without removing the pad. Compatible with most smartphones such as iPhone, compatible with various wristbands, lanyards, crossbody straps, and keychains
  • [Durable and Portable Material] Premium rust-resistant stainless steel material with good flexibility, which not only avoids scratching the phone case, but also has excellent anti rust and anti fading performance
  • [Multi scenario Practical] Paired with a lanyard or wristband, hands-free use can be achieved. The phone is within reach and not easily dropped, ideal for daily commuting and outdoor activities. Suitable for full coverage phone cases, does not support half coverage phone cases
  • [Quality Service] If you find any damage or other issues with the product upon receipt, please contact us immediately. We will handle it quickly

A useful workflow is to make one untouched archive, create a working copy for edits, and export finished versions into a separate folder. Name exports with the view or purpose, such as hike_forward_1080p.mp4, while leaving the camera originals unchanged. This prevents a social-media export from being mistaken for the editable 360 master.

Troubleshoot a phone that will not connect

Check wireless settings and permissions

  • Confirm that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled on both the phone and camera.
  • Enable Location Services if the app requests it.
  • On iPhone, allow the Insta360 app to use the Local Network.
  • On Android, disable WLAN+ or automatic Wi-Fi switching if it causes the phone to leave the camera’s network.
  • Keep the phone close to the camera during pairing and transfer.
  • Make sure the app is current enough to support the X4 Air and that the camera has completed activation when prompted.

Reset the connection

  1. Restart both the X4 Air and the phone.
  2. In the phone’s Wi-Fi settings, forget the camera’s network.
  3. Return to the Insta360 app and reconnect through the camera icon.
  4. Accept the authorization prompt on the camera touchscreen or with the shutter button.

If a Quick File Transfer is interrupted, reopen the app and start the transfer again. Do not close the app or force it out of the background while the copy is running. If discovery still fails, move closer, temporarily disable automatic network switching, and repeat the pairing process rather than repeatedly tapping transfer on a stale connection.

Troubleshoot a computer that does not see the X4 Air

  1. Make sure the camera is powered on and that File Transfer, not another USB mode, is selected.
  2. Reconnect with the USB-C cable supplied by Insta360. A charging-only cable may not carry data.
  3. Install any available camera firmware update.
  4. Try a different USB port on the same computer.
  5. Try another computer to distinguish a camera or cable problem from a computer-port issue.
  6. Check that the microSD card is compatible and functioning normally.

If the camera appears but DCIM > Camera01 is empty, verify that you are viewing the camera drive rather than the phone’s app storage, and confirm that recordings were actually saved to the card. Do not format the card merely because the folder is not visible. Disconnect, restart, and test the card and cable methodically.

The manufacturer’s transfer troubleshooting checks are summarized in the X4 Air File Transfer guide and the computer-transfer guide.

microSD card requirements that affect recording and transfer

A card is not required as a new purchase merely to transfer existing footage. It matters when the installed card is unsuitable, damaged, full, or too small for your recording plans. Insta360 specifies these requirements for normal X4 Air recording:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Requirement Specification
File system exFAT
Bus/interface class UHS-I
Video speed class V30 or above
Maximum supported capacity Up to 1 TB

Before replacing a card, confirm the exact model and capacity against the current X4 Air storage requirements. A card that fails the speed, interface, file-system, or capacity requirements can cause recording errors or make troubleshooting harder. Back up any footage before formatting or replacing a card. If a card is near capacity, copy the files first, verify the backup, and only then clear space in the camera.

Common transfer mistakes to avoid

  • Using Download when you need a phone-shareable file: Download puts media in the app gallery; use Export for the system Photos or gallery app.
  • Using Export and deleting the originals: A rendered phone video is not a substitute for the original 360 files if you may reframe later.
  • Copying only the visible video: Keep every file generated for each clip, including the .insv and .lrv pair.
  • Choosing the wrong USB mode: The computer needs File Transfer, not a charging-only connection.
  • Closing the app mid-transfer: Quick File Transfer stops when the app is closed or removed from the background.
  • Formatting a questionable card too soon: Formatting can destroy the only copy of footage.
  • Buying an unnecessary cable: Insta360’s instructions call for the supplied USB-C data cable; an extra cable is not established as a requirement.

A practical transfer checklist

  • Decide whether the destination is the phone’s system album, the Insta360 app gallery, or a computer archive.
  • For phone transfers, connect through the Insta360 app and choose Download or Export deliberately.
  • For a wireless Quick File Transfer, leave the app running in the background until completion.
  • For a computer, use the supplied USB-C cable, power on the camera, select File Transfer, and open DCIM > Camera01.
  • Copy every file generated for a 360 clip, including its .insv and .lrv files.
  • If the camera is not detected, check firmware, power, cable, USB port, computer, and card condition.
  • Preserve the original files before editing or exporting shareable copies.
  • Open at least one copied clip in the app or Insta360 Studio before clearing the camera card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I transfer X4 Air footage without the Insta360 app?

Yes. Connect the powered-on camera to a Mac or Windows computer with the supplied USB-C data cable, select File Transfer, and copy files from DCIM > Camera01. The app is required for the normal wireless phone workflow.

What is the difference between Download and Export?

Download places the media in the Insta360 app gallery for editing there. Export renders a copy to the phone’s regular Photos or gallery application for viewing and sharing.

Why does my computer charge the camera but not show files?

Select File Transfer on the camera, use the supplied USB-C data cable, and try another USB port. A charging-only cable, an unpowered camera, outdated firmware, or an incompatible card can prevent the drive from appearing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to copy both the .insv and .lrv files?

For a 360 clip, copy every file generated for that clip. Insta360’s example includes an .insv VID file and an .lrv companion, so keep them together in the destination folder.

Where are files stored after I download them to the app?

On iPhone, the app’s DCIM area can be accessed through Finder or iTunes File Sharing. On Android, the documented path is Android > data > com.arashivision.insta360akiko > files > Insta360OneR > galleryOriginal.

What should I do if Quick File Transfer stops?

Reopen the Insta360 app and start again. Keep Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Location Services enabled, keep the phone near the camera, and leave the app running in the background until completion.

What microSD card does the X4 Air require?

Insta360 specifies exFAT, UHS-I, V30 or above, with support up to 1 TB. A new card is not needed simply to transfer footage that already exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I delete the camera files after exporting an MP4?

Only after you have verified a backup and are certain you will not need the original 360 source. An exported flat MP4 does not preserve the same future reframing flexibility as the original files.

The Bottom Line

For a phone, connect the X4 Air in the Insta360 app, then choose Download for the app gallery or Export for the phone’s system album. For a Mac or Windows computer, use the supplied USB-C cable, select File Transfer, and copy everything in DCIM > Camera01. Keep each 360 clip’s .insv and .lrv files together, verify the backup, and troubleshoot power, permissions, cable, firmware, ports, and card compatibility before formatting or replacing anything.
