Choose the right transfer method first
Nintendo provides two materially different ways to move save data. The normal choice when both consoles are available is the nearby transfer in Data Management. It moves the selected save directly from the old Switch to the new one. It does not require Nintendo Switch Online.

Cloud restoration is a fallback for situations in which the original console cannot be used, but it has stricter conditions. It requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and software that supports Save Data Cloud backup. The Nintendo documentation cited for this process does not establish that Hello Kitty Island Adventure has a game-specific cloud exception, so cloud recovery should be treated as conditional rather than guaranteed.

Prepare both Nintendo Switch consoles
A few checks prevent the most common interruptions. Perform them before opening the transfer menu.

- Update both systems: On each console, go to System Settings → System → System Update and install any available system update.
- Connect both consoles to the internet: Nearby transfer still requires internet access on both systems, even though the save is being moved between consoles that are physically close.
- Place the consoles near each other: Keep the old and new Switch together while the transfer is running.
- Check the account link: The user that owns the Hello Kitty Island Adventure save on the old console must correspond to a user linked to the same Nintendo Account on the new console.
- Identify the source and target: The old Switch containing your island is the source. The replacement or second Switch receiving it is the target. Mixing up these roles can send the save in the wrong direction.
- Protect the source until verification: Do not erase, initialize, or reset either console before the target launches the game and the island progress is confirmed.
A microSD card and a game card are not part of Nintendo’s documented save-transfer workflow. Moving either card is not a substitute for transferring the save through Data Management.
Transfer the island with Nintendo’s nearby save-data tool
1. Open the send menu on the old Switch
- Wake the old Nintendo Switch, the system that currently contains your island.
- Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
- Select Data Management.
- Choose Transfer Your Save Data.
- Select Send Save Data to Another Console.
The wording matters: choose the save-data transfer command, not a microSD-management or software-archiving command. The source console will present the users and saves available for sending.
2. Select the correct user and game save
- Choose the user profile that is linked to the Nintendo Account used for the island.
- Select the Hello Kitty Island Adventure save from that user’s available saves.
- Review the on-screen confirmation so you know which save is being sent.
If the expected save is not listed, stop rather than selecting a different user. The account and user-link check in the preparation section is the first thing to revisit.

- On the new console, open System Settings → Data Management → Transfer Your Save Data.
- Choose the receive option, shown as the command for receiving save data from another console.
- Follow the prompts on both systems until the transfer reports completion.
Keep both consoles powered and close together during this process. Do not interrupt the consoles by resetting them or changing the user setup while the transfer is in progress.

4. Launch the game and verify the result
- After the transfer finishes, open Hello Kitty Island Adventure on the new Switch using the transferred user.
- Confirm that the expected island, characters, items, and other progress are present.
- Only after that check succeeds should you erase, reset, trade in, or otherwise repurpose the old console.
This final launch is the practical confirmation that the target is using the intended save. A completed system-transfer message alone is not a reason to discard the source console immediately.
What happens to the old save
Nearby save-data transfer is a move, not a persistent duplicate. Nintendo’s support wording is explicit: “This does not create a copy of your save data. Once sent, the save data file will be deleted from the source system.” In practical terms, the old Switch should no longer be treated as a second, independently playable copy of that island after the send operation.
That behavior is different from a synchronization service. If you play on the new console later, progress made there does not automatically remain available on the old console through the nearby-transfer feature. The operation is intended to relocate the save to another system.
Because deletion occurs as part of sending, the safest sequence is to confirm the target installation first and postpone any factory reset or sale of the old Switch until the game opens with the correct progress.

Do you need Nintendo Switch Online?
No subscription is required for the nearby transfer. Nintendo’s support documentation states: “A Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required to use this feature.” You still need both consoles connected to the internet, but internet access and a Nintendo Switch Online membership are separate requirements.
Nintendo Switch Online does matter for the alternative cloud route. Cloud backup and download require an active membership, and the software must support Save Data Cloud. Therefore, having a membership does not by itself guarantee that an Hello Kitty Island Adventure save can be restored from the cloud; the game’s support status and the existence of a backup still determine whether that method works.
Use Save Data Cloud only when its conditions are met
Cloud restoration is useful when the old Switch is lost, damaged, unavailable, or cannot participate in a nearby transfer. It is not the same operation as the direct move described above.
On the source console, create or confirm the backup
- Open the game’s software menu on the source Switch.
- Use the Save Data Cloud option to back up the game, following the prompts shown for the account.
- Allow the backup operation to finish while the console is online.
This step must have occurred while the source save was accessible. If the old console is unavailable and no compatible backup exists, there may be nothing for the target system to download.

On the target console, download the backup
- Sign in with the Nintendo Account associated with the backup.
- Open the game’s Save Data Cloud area.
- Choose Download Save Data.
- Complete the prompts and then launch the game to check the island progress.
The cited Nintendo documentation does not confirm a special cloud-support exception for Hello Kitty Island Adventure. Treat this method as a conditional recovery path: it works only when the software supports cloud backup under the account and a usable backup is available.
Consider Nintendo’s broader user-transfer option
Nintendo also documents a broader user-transfer process. Unlike relying on Save Data Cloud, Nintendo says this option can retain game save data, including saves for games that do not support Save Data Cloud backup. It is relevant when you are moving an entire user setup rather than only relocating one game’s save.
This is a different decision from selecting Send Save Data to Another Console for the Hello Kitty save. If your goal is to move a complete user profile and its associated data, review Nintendo’s user-transfer instructions and make sure you understand which user, account, and system data will be moved. If your goal is only the island, the specific save-data transfer menu is the more focused route.

The old console is available, but the transfer cannot start
- Run System Settings → System → System Update on both consoles.
- Confirm that both systems have internet access.
- Place the consoles near each other and retry the transfer.
- Check that each console has the relevant user linked to the same Nintendo Account.
- Return to Data Management → Transfer Your Save Data and make sure the old system is using the send command while the new system is using the receive command.
The Hello Kitty save does not appear
Do not select a different profile simply to make the process continue. Recheck which user played the game and whether that user is the one linked to the same Nintendo Account on both consoles. If the save still does not appear, stop the transfer rather than risking movement of an unintended file.

The old Switch is missing or unusable
Nearby transfer cannot operate without the source console. The remaining documented route is Save Data Cloud, but only if the game supports the service, the account has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, and a backup exists. If any of those conditions is absent, the cloud method cannot be presented as a guaranteed recovery.
The target launches without the expected island
- Close the game without making new progress that could complicate which save you are checking.
- Confirm that you launched it with the user whose save was transferred.
- Check whether the nearby transfer reported completion on both consoles.
- Do not erase or reset the old Switch until the account, user, and save selection have been checked.
If you are considering cloud restoration after a direct transfer, remember that cloud restore is a separate process with its own membership and compatibility requirements; it is not an automatic second copy of the nearby-transferred file.
What you do not need for this transfer
- You do not need Nintendo Switch Online for the nearby save-data transfer.
- You do not need to copy the save onto a microSD card.
- You do not need to move a physical game card as part of Nintendo’s documented save workflow.
- You should not expect the nearby method to maintain the same island on two consoles indefinitely.
The relevant physical item, if you are replacing hardware, is simply the replacement or second Nintendo Switch console. The save itself is handled through Nintendo’s system menus, not by copying ordinary files.
Final checklist before you retire the old Switch
- The target console has been updated.
- The transferred user is linked to the intended Nintendo Account.
- The game opens on the target with the expected island progress.
- You understand that the source save was deleted by the nearby transfer.
- You have not relied on cloud recovery unless Nintendo Switch Online, game compatibility, and an existing backup are all confirmed.
For two working consoles, the nearby Data Management transfer is the clearest and least conditional way to move your island. Use cloud restoration only as a supported-backup recovery path, and treat Nintendo’s broader user-transfer process as a separate option when you are moving an entire user rather than one game save.
