To transfer GTA Online progress from PS4 to PS5, sign in on the PS5 with the Rockstar Games account linked to your PS4 character, start GTA Online, choose Online on the landing page, select the PS4 profile, and confirm migration. If you dismiss the prompt, you can start it later through Pause Menu > Online > Migrate Profile.
This is a one-time profile migration between PlayStation generations, not a shared save that stays synchronized. Your PS4 profile remains available on PS4, but progress made on PS4 and PS5 after migration becomes separate.

What is transferred from PS4 to PS5?
Rockstar calls this process GTA Online profile migration. It moves your eligible GTA Online profile and its accumulated Online progress from the PlayStation 4 version to the PlayStation 5 version. The process is started inside GTA Online on the PS5; there is no separate cable, USB utility, or third-party migration tool in Rockstar’s instructions.
The transfer applies to GTA Online, including your Online character and associated progress. It is different from moving a Grand Theft Auto V Story Mode save. Story Mode has its own upload-and-download procedure, documented separately by Rockstar, and completing an Online profile migration does not automatically move Story Mode saves.

Rockstar’s migration instructions were last updated February 24, 2026. Menu wording can change with a game update, but the documented path is the landing page’s Online option or, later, Pause Menu > Online > Migrate Profile.
Before you begin
Use the correct Rockstar Games account
The PS5 must be signed in to the Rockstar Games account associated with the PS4 profile you want to move. If several people use the console, check the account before starting GTA Online. Choosing the wrong account can make the expected PS4 profile unavailable and can lead you to start a new character accidentally.
Do not rely only on the PlayStation user name. Confirm the Rockstar login that was linked to the character, especially if you have changed email addresses, used more than one Social Club/Rockstar account, or share a console with another player. The profile presented for migration is tied to that account.

You need a way to launch GTA Online on PS5, such as an edition or entitlement you already own. Rockstar’s instructions do not say that buying a new physical disc is required, and they do not require any special accessory. If you already have digital or other legitimate access to the PS5 version, use that access rather than purchasing another copy solely for migration.
A physical product such as Grand Theft Auto V PS5 may be relevant if you need the destination edition, but availability and pricing vary. The migration instructions themselves do not require a particular disc, accessory, replacement part, or separate migration utility. Check that you are launching the native PS5 version rather than the PS4 application through backward compatibility.
Decide which PS4 profile you intend to move
Review your characters and account on PS4 first. Migration is tied to the profile selected on the PS5 prompt. If you have more than one possible account, verify the Rockstar login associated with the character that has your businesses, vehicles, rank, and balance.
Take a quick inventory of the character’s important assets and GTA$ before starting. This gives you a practical comparison point after the completion alert and helps support identify a problem if the displayed profile or balance is not what you expected.

Understand the post-migration limitation
The PS4 profile is not deleted by the move. However, Rockstar states that GTA Online progress made on different console generations will not be synced after migration. Treat the PS4 and PS5 versions as separate progression states once the transfer is complete.
Step-by-step: migrate GTA Online from PS4 to PS5
- Sign in on the PS5. Sign in to PlayStation Network and the Rockstar Games account associated with the PS4 GTA Online profile. Confirm that you are not using a different Rockstar account from the one that owns the desired character.
- Start GTA Online on PS5. Launch the PS5 version of the game and wait for the landing page.
- Choose Online. On the landing page, select Online rather than entering Story Mode first.
- Select the PS4 profile. The game should present the PS4 profile eligible for migration. Select the profile you want to move.
- Confirm migration. Read the confirmation screen and accept it to begin the move. Do not close the game or switch accounts while the migration is being processed.
- Wait for the completion notice. Rockstar says an alert reports successful completion. After the alert, continue into GTA Online and verify that the expected character and assets are present.
If you skipped the prompt on first entry
You can initiate the process later without reinstalling the game. Enter GTA Online on PS5, open the Pause Menu, choose Online, select Migrate Profile, and follow the on-screen prompts. The same Rockstar account and eligibility requirements apply.
What to check after the alert
Load into GTA Online with the migrated character and compare the character name, rank, properties, vehicles, businesses, and visible GTA$ balance with your PS4 record. Check that Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack benefits appear if the PS4 character had access to them. If something looks wrong, keep the exact alert text and note whether the currency was earned or purchased before contacting Rockstar Support.
What carries over
The following rules are the ones Rockstar identifies for a PS4-to-PS5 migration:

Earned versus purchased GTA$
Do not treat all GTA$ as subject to the same rule. GTA$ earned through gameplay transfer regardless of platform family under Rockstar’s currency guidance. Purchased GTA$ have a console-family restriction: they can move within the same family, which includes PS4 to PS5, but are not eligible for a move between PlayStation and Xbox, or between a console family and PC.
Rockstar’s migration confirmation warns that unspent purchased GTA$ are not eligible when moving across platform families. That warning concerns cross-family moves, not the PS4-to-PS5 move described here. If you later compare balances, separate money earned in-game from currency bought through a store transaction.
Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack access
If your PS4 character had access to Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack benefits, those benefits can be accessed on PS5 through the migrated character. The benefit is associated with the qualifying migrated character; it is not a general entitlement that appears on every unrelated character.

Eligibility: why a profile may not be allowed to migrate
Rockstar does not publish a numeric progress threshold for every account. Instead, the migration result is determined account by account. Its save-migration error guidance lists these possible reasons for an ineligible profile:

- The profile is banned or suspended.
- The profile has already been migrated.
- The profile contains illegitimate progress.
- The profile has insufficient progress under Rockstar’s internal eligibility checks.
“Insufficient progress” has no public level, rank, or dollar amount that you can use to self-test. If the game reports that your profile cannot be migrated, record the exact message and use Rockstar Support for an account-specific explanation. Do not assume that creating more characters or spending currency will satisfy an unpublished threshold.
Eligibility is separate from simply owning a PS5 or installing the game. A valid PlayStation-family destination does not override a ban, suspension, prior migration, illegitimate progress finding, or the account-specific progress check. The in-game result is the authoritative indication for that profile.
What happens on PS4 after the move?
Migration does not erase the PS4 profile. You can still start the PS4 version and see that profile there. The important change is that the two generations stop functioning as a shared, live progression record.
For example, if you migrate on Monday and then earn a new vehicle on PS5, that vehicle will not appear in the PS4 version through synchronization. If you later earn money or increase rank on PS4, those changes will not flow back to PS5. Decide which console will be your primary version before you invest additional time in both.

The profile remains as a separate state on PS4, while the PS5 profile becomes the state you continue developing on the newer console. There is no merge step that combines later PS4 activity with later PS5 activity.

Rockstar’s “Grand Theft Auto Online Character Transfers” guidance, updated January 29, 2025, describes the platform boundaries. The PS4-to-PS5 move works because both systems belong to the PlayStation family; it should not be used as evidence that a PlayStation character can be moved to Xbox or PC.

Online profile migration is not Story Mode save migration
GTA Online progress and Story Mode saves use different systems. The Online procedure begins by selecting Online on the PS5 landing page or by opening Pause Menu > Online > Migrate Profile. Story Mode saves follow Rockstar’s separate “Migrating your GTAV Story Mode Save Game from PlayStation 4 or Xbox One to PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S” instructions, last updated May 1, 2024.
If your goal is to continue a single-player campaign, do not stop after migrating the Online profile. Follow the Story Mode upload and download steps separately and check the downloaded save in Story Mode. Conversely, a Story Mode save transfer does not replace the GTA Online migration described above.

The PS4 profile is not listed
- Exit GTA Online and verify that the PS5 is signed in to the Rockstar Games account linked to the intended PS4 character.
- Check that you launched the PS5 version, not the PS4 application running through backward compatibility.
- Return to the landing page and choose Online. If you previously dismissed the prompt, open Pause Menu > Online > Migrate Profile.
- If the profile still does not appear, treat the result as an account or eligibility issue and contact Rockstar Support rather than creating a replacement character.
The game says the profile is ineligible
Compare the message with Rockstar’s listed causes: a ban or suspension, a previous migration, illegitimate progress, or insufficient progress. Because Rockstar does not publish a numeric test for insufficient progress, there is no reliable in-game workaround that guarantees approval. Support is the appropriate next step.
The migration alert never appears
Remain signed in to the same account, allow the game to finish processing, and return to the migration entry point if necessary. If the profile then reports as already migrated, do not repeatedly submit the request; Rockstar’s error guidance identifies an already-migrated profile as a reason it may not be eligible for another attempt.
Currency appears different after moving
Separate earned GTA$ from purchased GTA$. The same-family PS4-to-PS5 move is covered by Rockstar’s purchased-currency rule, while cross-family moves are not. If the displayed balance does not match the expected result, preserve purchase records and the migration message when contacting support.
I continued playing on PS4 after migration
Those later PS4 changes are not synchronized to PS5. Choose the version whose progress you want to keep developing and avoid assuming that playing on both consoles will merge the results.

I bought the game again but still cannot migrate
Owning or reinstalling the destination version does not change the Rockstar account attached to the profile or remove an eligibility restriction. First verify the account and the native PS5 application. If Rockstar still reports an ineligible or previously migrated profile, use the listed reason and exact message when contacting support.

Migration checklist
- PS5 is signed in to the Rockstar Games account associated with the desired PS4 profile.
- The PS5 version of GTA Online launches successfully.
- You know which PS4 character and profile should be selected.
- You understand that PS4 and PS5 progress will be separate after migration.
- You have distinguished GTA Online progress from any Story Mode save you also need to move.
- You know whether your GTA$ are earned or purchased when checking the result.
- You have noted the character’s important assets and balance so you can verify the completion result.
- You will keep the exact error or alert text if Rockstar does not offer the expected profile.
Rockstar’s February 24, 2026 migration instructions provide the in-game steps; its October 4, 2024 currency guidance covers GTA$ behavior; and its October 4, 2024 save-migration error guidance explains common ineligibility results. Together, these rules describe a PS4-to-PS5 move that is initiated on PS5, keeps the old profile on PS4, and does not create ongoing cross-generation synchronization.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to buy a separate migration tool or accessory?
No. Rockstar’s instructions start inside the PS5 version of GTA Online and do not require a cable, USB utility, accessory, or third-party tool. You only need legitimate access to the PS5 version and the correct Rockstar Games account.
Can I migrate after skipping the first prompt?

Can I move my GTA Online profile from PlayStation to Xbox or PC later?

Does this move my GTA V Story Mode save too?

What should I do if the expected character or balance is missing?
Check that you used the correct Rockstar account and launched the PS5 version. Distinguish earned from purchased GTA$, retain purchase records and the migration alert, and provide those details to Rockstar Support.
