How to Transfer GoPro LIT HERO Videos to a Phone or Computer

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The simplest route depends on where you want the clips: pair the LIT HERO with the GoPro Quik app to download footage to a phone, or power the camera off and copy files from its microSD card with a card reader on a computer. Direct card copies preserve the original files but do not include HyperSmooth stabilization; save stabilized versions through Quik.

Choose the transfer method that matches your destination

The LIT HERO has two practical local-transfer workflows documented by GoPro. Quik handles wireless phone downloads and can create a stabilized saved version. A computer normally receives the original files by reading the camera’s microSD card. Cloud upload is a separate, optional backup route rather than a requirement for either local method.

Method Destination Physical accessory Connection and account requirements Stabilization result
Quik download Phone, inside the GoPro Quik app None beyond the camera and phone Camera paired in Quik; phone Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled Quik can apply automatic HyperSmooth stabilization before you save an output
microSD-card copy Computer storage Compatible microSD-to-SD adapter or USB-C microSD card reader Camera powered off while the card is removed; computer port or slot must match the reader Original card files are not HyperSmooth-stabilized
Automatic cloud upload GoPro cloud, then Quik devices None, but a reliable Wi-Fi network is needed GoPro Premium or Premium+ subscription, Quik connection, camera on power Cloud backup is separate from the local stabilization workflow

For a quick share from a phone, use Quik. For large batches, editing on a desktop, or retaining the camera originals, use a card reader. Treat cloud upload as an optional backup and synchronization feature.

Prepare the LIT HERO, phone, and storage

Check the camera and card

  • Confirm that the footage is on the LIT HERO’s microSD card and that the camera has enough battery for a wireless session.
  • Do not remove the card while the camera is on. GoPro warns that ejecting it during operation could permanently damage the card.
  • If you will copy to a computer, have a reader or adapter that accepts the camera’s card and fits an available computer port or card slot. A USB-C microSD card reader is the relevant accessory category; compatibility, not a particular model, is what matters.

Prepare a phone for Quik

  • Install GoPro Quik from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
  • Turn on the phone’s Wi-Fi and Bluetooth before starting pairing.
  • Keep the camera and phone close together during initial setup and make sure the phone has enough free storage for the clips you plan to download.

Check software only when a problem requires it

GoPro’s update page lists LIT HERO firmware v2.10.00 dated April 14, 2026. Firmware information can change, and updating is not required by the documented transfer steps. If pairing or media access fails, check the camera’s current firmware and the current Quik release before troubleshooting further.

Transfer videos to an iPhone or Android phone with Quik

1. Start pairing from the camera

  1. Turn on the LIT HERO.
  2. Swipe down on the camera screen to open the Dashboard.
  3. Swipe left and choose Pair Device.
  4. Leave the camera at the pairing screen while you open the phone app.

2. Pair in GoPro Quik

  1. Verify that the phone’s Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on.
  2. Open GoPro Quik.
  3. Follow Quik’s on-screen pairing instructions and approve the phone permissions it requests for the connection and media access.

GoPro’s LIT HERO manual gives this instruction verbatim: “Make sure that your phone’s Wi-Fi and Bluetooth® are on. Start the GoPro Quik app and follow the on-screen instructions to pair your camera.” After initial setup, the camera and app should sync when both devices are on and their wireless connections are enabled.

3. Download every new clip

In Quik, tap Download to bring all new footage into the app. This is the fastest choice after a day of shooting when you want everything that has not already been downloaded.

4. Download only selected files

  1. In Quik, open View Media.
  2. Select one clip or mark multiple clips.
  3. Tap the download control.

Selection is useful when the card contains long recordings, duplicate takes, or material you do not need on the phone. Quik can access media stored on the camera’s SD card, in the cloud, and in the app, so check the media location shown in the app before selecting files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Find and save the downloaded footage

The manual describes the downloads as saves to the Quik app on the phone. If you need a clip in the phone’s ordinary Photos or Gallery library, use the app’s save or export command after the download and choose the phone’s photo library or Files location. The exact wording and destination can vary by iOS or Android version; confirm that the export has finished before deleting the Quik copy or the camera original.

Get stabilized phone footage instead of an untouched copy

A wireless download is not automatically the same thing as a stabilized edit. GoPro states that direct copies from the SD card do not have HyperSmooth stabilization applied. When you want a stabilized result, use Quik’s automatic HyperSmooth stabilization and save the resulting version from Quik. Keep the original clip as well if you may want to change the crop, stabilization, or edit later.

  • Original quality and maximum flexibility: retain the camera file and edit it later.
  • Fast share: download in Quik, apply its automatic stabilization, and save the finished version to the phone.
  • Computer editing: copy the untouched card file first, then use a desktop workflow that supports your desired stabilization treatment.

Stabilization processing creates an additional saved output; it does not change the fact that the card copy itself is an unstabilized original.

Transfer videos to a Windows PC or Mac with the microSD card

1. Power the camera off completely

Stop recording and turn off the LIT HERO before opening the card compartment. Removing the card while the camera is powered on can permanently damage the card, according to GoPro’s manual. Wait until the camera is fully off rather than relying on a brief screen blackout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Remove the microSD card

Take the card out carefully and avoid touching its contacts. If the camera uses a small-card adapter, keep the microSD card and adapter together so they are not separated during the transfer.

3. Connect a compatible reader or adapter

  1. Insert the microSD card into a compatible SD adapter or USB-C microSD card reader.
  2. Connect the reader to a computer USB port, or insert the adapter into the computer’s built-in card slot.
  3. Wait for the operating system to mount the removable volume.

Check both ends before buying an accessory: the reader must accept the LIT HERO card, and its output must match the computer’s available port. A USB-C reader is convenient for computers with USB-C ports; another reader type may be appropriate when the computer provides a different slot.

4. Copy the files, do not move them first

  1. Open the removable card volume in File Explorer on Windows or Finder on macOS.
  2. Locate the video files and select the recordings you need.
  3. Copy them to a clearly named folder on the computer, such as a folder for the shooting date or project.
  4. Open a few copied files from the computer to verify that they play before erasing or reusing the card.

GoPro’s computer instructions also describe copying files into the GoPro Quik app. You can retain a normal folder copy for editing and archive purposes while importing a working copy into Quik if you want its viewing, sharing, or stabilization features.

5. Eject the card safely

When copying has finished and the files have been checked, use the computer’s eject command before removing the reader or adapter. Reinsert the card only after the reader has been disconnected, then power the LIT HERO on if you need to record again.

Use cloud upload when you want an automatic backup

Cloud workflow requirements

  • Set up the eligible Premium or Premium+ subscription.
  • Connect the camera to Quik and complete the account setup shown there.
  • Connect the camera to power and a Wi-Fi network so the upload can run without relying on the camera battery.
  • Review Auto Clear before enabling it. If it is on, files can be removed from the card after upload.

Cloud features, including Auto Upload and automatic highlight videos, are unavailable in China according to the manual. Subscription terms, pricing, and territory availability can change, so check GoPro’s current subscription information for your region. Neither the Quik phone-download method nor the SD-card computer copy requires a subscription.

Troubleshoot the most common transfer failures

Quik cannot find the camera

  • Return to the camera Dashboard and select Pair Device again.
  • Confirm that both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled on the phone.
  • Close and reopen Quik, then follow its pairing prompts from the beginning.
  • Keep the camera powered and nearby during pairing, and check for a Quik or firmware update if the problem persists.

Pairing succeeds but media does not appear

  • Open View Media in Quik and check whether the app is showing the camera’s SD card, cloud media, or media already stored in the app.
  • Wait for the card index to load before selecting files.
  • Check that the camera still contains the recordings and that the card is seated correctly.

A download stops or the phone runs out of space

  • Download a smaller selection instead of all new footage.
  • Free space on the phone before retrying.
  • Keep the camera and phone powered during a long transfer and retry the failed clip individually if a batch repeatedly stops.

The computer does not show the card

  • Make sure the camera was powered off before the card was removed.
  • Reseat the microSD card in the reader or adapter.
  • Try another compatible USB port or card slot and verify that the reader supports the card format.
  • If the card is visible but files are missing, stop recording to it and avoid formatting it until you have checked for a recoverable copy.

The copied video is not stabilized

This is expected for a direct card copy. Use Quik’s automatic HyperSmooth stabilization and save a processed version, or apply stabilization in the editor you use on the computer. Do not mistake the untouched original for a failed transfer.

Cloud upload removed clips from the card

Auto Clear is designed to clear card files after they have been backed up. Check the cloud copy before recording more footage, and disable Auto Clear when you need the originals to remain on the camera.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep an orderly copy and backup routine

  1. Create a folder for each recording date, trip, or project before copying files.
  2. Copy the original card files first; make stabilized or edited exports in a separate subfolder.
  3. Open representative clips from each transfer to confirm that the copy completed.
  4. Keep at least one additional backup before formatting or reusing the card.
  5. Only clear the camera card after you have verified the destination copy or confirmed the cloud backup, especially when Auto Clear is involved.

This separation prevents a stabilized export from replacing the original recording and makes it easier to locate the unedited footage when you return to a project later.

Questions the transfer steps answer

Can I transfer LIT HERO videos without a subscription?

Yes. Pairing with Quik for phone downloads and copying from the microSD card to a computer are documented local methods that do not require a subscription. Premium or Premium+ is tied to the optional automatic cloud-upload workflow.

Do I need a cable from the camera to the computer?

The documented computer route uses the camera’s removable microSD card and a reader or adapter. A card reader is therefore the clearest physical accessory for this workflow.

Will transferring through Quik stabilize every clip?

Quik can automatically apply HyperSmooth stabilization before saving an output. A direct SD-card copy does not apply that processing, and downloading a file should not be confused with creating a stabilized export.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I leave the card in the camera while transferring to a phone?

Yes. The Quik workflow accesses media on the camera’s SD card over the paired wireless connection, so card removal is not part of the phone procedure. Card removal is required for the documented computer-reader route.
