On PlayStation, use Sony’s console-transfer or cloud-save options for progress, and choose storage separately for game files. On Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, supported saves sync through Xbox network when you sign in; an external USB drive can move installations. The right route depends on your console generation, whether you have both consoles, and whether you need to move saves, games, or both.
Choose the transfer method that matches what you need
| Platform and goal | Best-supported route | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 or PS5 to PS5: saves and other supported data, with both consoles available | Sony’s console-to-console transfer over the same network | Prepare both consoles and use the transfer flow on the PS5. The transfer copies supported data; check that the saves you need are included. |
| PS4 or PS5 to PS5: saves without a direct console transfer | PlayStation Plus cloud storage | Requires PlayStation Plus. PS5 saves can auto-sync; PS4 saves must be downloaded to PS5 storage. |
| PS4 saves to PS5 without cloud storage | USB save-data copy | Works for PS4 saved data, not PS5 saves. It is separate from USB extended storage used for games. |
| Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S: supported game saves | Sign in to Xbox network and allow cloud saves to sync | Save roaming depends on game support and edition compatibility. It is not a universal guarantee for every upgrade or separate edition. |
| Xbox One to Series X|S: game installations | Compatible external USB storage or a network transfer | USB 3.1 external storage used with Xbox One can be connected to Series X|S. Check game and device compatibility; exact network-transfer menu labels can vary. |
Transfer PS4 or PS5 data to a PS5
Use Sony’s console-to-console transfer when both consoles are available
Sony supports transferring supported data from a PS4 or another PS5 to a target PS5 over the same network. Before starting, use the same account on the source and destination, install current system software, synchronize trophies, and connect both consoles to the same network. Then start Sony’s data-transfer flow on the target PS5 and follow its on-screen prompts. See Sony’s transfer instructions for the current steps and supported data.

This is the most direct option when you want to move more than saves and have both consoles accessible. It does not make the distinction between saves and installed games disappear: confirm that your important saved data has transferred, and treat reinstalling or moving game files as a separate task if needed.
Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage for saves
Cloud storage is an alternative when you do not want to transfer directly between consoles. It requires PlayStation Plus. Sony lists capacity of up to 100 GB for PS5 saved data and 100 GB for PS4 saved data, with a limit of 1,000 PS4 save files. For PS5 saves, automatic sync can upload and download saved data. PS4 saves may upload automatically when configured, but must be manually downloaded to PS5 storage. Check the save’s upload status on the old console before relying on the cloud copy. Details are in Sony’s PlayStation Plus cloud-storage guide.

Copy PS4 saves with a USB drive
If you are moving PS4 saves and do not have cloud storage, Sony supports copying them from PS4 system storage to a USB drive and then onto the PS5. On PS4, use Settings > Application Saved Data Management, choose the system-storage-to-USB option, and select the saves. On PS5, connect the drive and use the saved-data controls to copy the PS4 saves to console storage. Sony’s PS4 storage instructions cover the source-console copy, and its PS5 storage guide explains the relevant storage distinctions.
This USB route is only for PS4 saved data. Sony says PS5 saves cannot be copied from the console to USB. A drive formatted for PS4 save copying is also not the same thing as USB extended storage formatted for game installations.

Move PlayStation game installations separately from saves
For game files, Sony supports compatible SuperSpeed USB drives from 250 GB to 8 TB as extended storage. Compatible PS4 games can be played from external USB storage on PS5. A PS5 game stored on USB must be moved back to PS5 console storage or an M.2 SSD before it can be played. That makes external storage useful for carrying or keeping installations, but it does not turn the drive into a PS5 save-transfer method. Review Sony’s PS5 external-storage guidance before formatting a drive.

Transfer Xbox One saves to Xbox Series X|S
For saves, sign in and let supported games sync
Microsoft says Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S saves can transfer among consoles in those families through the cloud. Sign in to Xbox network with the account that owns the save, launch the compatible game, and allow synchronization to complete before continuing. This is a platform capability, not a promise that every game edition, publisher-specific upgrade, or cross-generation release shares progress. Microsoft’s backward-compatibility guidance describes cloud saves; its developer policy explains that roaming applies to supported games sharing a TitleID across generations when the player is signed in to Xbox network.

For game files, use external storage or console transfer
An Xbox One external USB 3.1 drive used for game storage can be connected to a Series X|S to make stored installations available. Xbox Wire also describes USB storage as a way to keep next-generation games for transfer, subject to the game and storage device. Some games or storage configurations may require moving a title to console storage before playing. For current device-specific guidance, see Microsoft’s Xbox storage overview.
You can also use Xbox console network-transfer features, but the exact current menu path is not established here; follow the transfer options shown in your console’s current settings or Microsoft support rather than relying on guessed menu labels. In either case, moving an installation does not replace the cloud-save sync.
Quick Recap
Check these things before retiring the old console
- Open the games you care about on the new console and verify that the expected progress appears.
- On PlayStation, confirm cloud uploads or complete the direct transfer before deleting local saves or resetting the source console.
- For a PS4-to-PS5 USB save copy, make sure you chose saved-data copying rather than formatting a drive as game extended storage.
- Allow Xbox cloud synchronization to finish before playing offline or turning off the old console.
- Keep the old console and any external drive unchanged until your games launch and their saves are verified.
