The most complete move is PlayStation’s built-in PS5-to-PS5 Data Transfer. Sign in to the same PlayStation account on both consoles, update their system software, sync trophies, and connect both PS5s to the same network. On the destination, open Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer > Continue, then follow the prompts. The destination restarts during the transfer; keep both consoles powered on until all activity shown in Control Center > Downloads/Uploads is finished.
Use a different method when you only need saves, only need game installations, or cannot keep both consoles available. PlayStation Plus cloud storage handles saves, USB or M.2 storage can carry game installations, and a full USB backup can restore most console content—but a full restore erases data already on the destination.

Prepare both PS5 consoles
- Sign in to the same PlayStation account. The account on the source and destination must be the one whose user data and saves you are moving. The procedure is not a method for merging data between different accounts.
- Update system software on both consoles. Complete any pending update before starting so the transfer does not stop for maintenance.
- Synchronize trophies. Open the trophy area on the source and allow it to finish synchronizing. Trophies are not included in a full USB backup, so synchronizing them beforehand is especially important.
- Put both PS5s on the same network. They can use Wi-Fi through the same modem or router. A LAN cable sold separately can improve transfer speed when the consoles normally use Wi-Fi. If both consoles already use wired network connections, PlayStation says you do not need an additional cable connecting the consoles directly to each other.
- Make room on the destination. The transfer does not move data that is already saved on the destination, but the destination still needs enough free storage for incoming games, saves, captures, and settings.
Do not begin if you cannot leave both consoles on and connected. A laptop, phone, or another device changing the router will not automatically cancel the transfer, but changing network settings on either PS5 during the operation is specifically warned against by PlayStation.
Transfer everything directly from PS5 to PS5
During first-time setup
If the destination PS5 has not completed initial setup, follow its on-screen data-transfer stage. The setup wizard detects the source console on the shared network and guides you through selecting the data to move. Keep the source awake and nearby until the destination confirms that the transfer has started.
After the destination is set up
- Turn on the source PS5 and leave it signed in to the required account.
- On the destination PS5, select Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer > Continue.
- Follow the on-screen prompts. The destination searches for the source on the shared network and asks you to confirm the transfer.
- Accept the restart when prompted. The destination console restarts as part of the process.
- After the restart, watch Control Center > Downloads/Uploads. Some game data may continue transferring after the initial restart.
- Leave both PS5s powered on. Do not change network settings and do not run an internet connection test until the transfer and any subsequent downloads finish.
PlayStation supports one source console transferring to one destination PS5 at a time. If you have several destination consoles, complete the operation separately rather than starting parallel transfers from the same source.
What the direct transfer includes
- User and account information stored on the source.
- Saved data for games playable on PS5.
- Screenshots and video clips.
- Games playable on PS5.
- Console settings.
Data already saved on the destination is not transferred. That means the operation is additive for the supported content it finds; it is not a general merge utility for conflicting users, settings, or saves.

Move saved data without moving the whole console
PlayStation Plus cloud storage
A PlayStation Plus member can upload saves from the source and download them on another PS5. On either console, open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5 or PS4), then choose the upload or download option for the relevant storage type.
For PS5 games, automatic sync uses the most recent saved data when auto-sync is enabled. For PS4 games, saves can upload automatically when enabled, but they must be manually downloaded to PS5 console storage. Check the sync status for each game before relying on the cloud copy; a save that has not completed its upload will not be available on the destination.
PlayStation Support lists these cloud limits in its current guidance (page accessed 2026): 100 GB of PS5 saved data, 100 GB of PS4 saved data, and a maximum of 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. These are account storage limits, not a statement that every game consumes the same amount of space.
PS4 saves on a USB drive
PS4 saved data can be copied to a USB drive and then copied onto the destination PS5. If the destination already has a save for that game, replacing it can overwrite the destination copy, so check which version is newer before confirming the replacement.

The USB-save route applies to PS4 saved data. PlayStation’s official wording is explicit: “You can’t copy PS5 saved data from your PS5 console to a USB drive.” For a PS5 game save, use direct console transfer or cloud storage instead.
Move game installations separately
Digital games
On the destination PS5, open your game library and download digital games again. The download route does not carry saved data, so move the saves by direct transfer or cloud storage if you need your progress.
Disc games
Insert each game disc into the destination PS5 and install the game. The disc is required to start a disc-based game after installation. Reinstalling the game also does not transfer its save.

USB extended storage
A USB extended-storage drive that was already used with another PS5 can be connected to the destination to access its stored game data. PlayStation specifies a SuperSpeed USB connection rated at 5 Gbps or later, capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB, and a direct connection to the PS5 rather than a USB hub. PlayStation also cautions that compatibility is not guaranteed for every drive.

- PS4 games can be played directly from compatible USB extended storage.
- PS5 games stored there must be copied back to console storage or an M.2 SSD before they can be played.
- USB extended storage holds game installations, not PS5 saved data.
The drive used as extended storage is different from a drive used to create a full PS5 backup. Formatting one for extended storage does not make it a save-data backup.
M.2 SSD migration
If the source PS5 has an M.2 SSD installed, you can move that SSD to the destination PS5 and use the game data stored on it, provided the destination supports the same compatible M.2 hardware and the installation is performed according to PlayStation’s hardware requirements. This is a game-data route only: it does not replace transferring saves.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a full USB backup only when an overwrite is acceptable
A PS5 USB backup can include games and apps, saved data, screenshots, video clips, and console settings. The backup is linked to the PlayStation account used to create it, and restoring it to another console requires that same account.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Restoring the backup erases all data currently saved on the destination PS5. Therefore, use this method when the destination can be wiped or when you have separately preserved anything on it that must not be lost. It is not the right choice for combining two established consoles.

Important backup exclusions
- Games and apps already stored on USB extended storage or an M.2 SSD are not included in the backup.
- Trophies are not included. Synchronize them with PlayStation Network before replacing or restoring a console.
- The backup drive must be treated separately from a USB drive formatted as extended storage.
After creating the backup, connect that backup drive to the destination and choose the restore option in the PS5 system software. Read the erase warning carefully before confirming; the restore operation is intentionally destructive to current destination data.
Practical transfer plans
Replacing an old PS5 with a new one
- Synchronize trophies on the old console.
- Update both consoles and sign in to the same account.
- Connect both to the same network.
- Run Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer > Continue on the new PS5.
- Leave the consoles on until Downloads/Uploads shows that the transfer and follow-up game activity are complete.
- Only after checking saves and captures should you reset or sell the old console.
Moving only progress to a PS5 already in use
- On the source, confirm that each required PS5 save has synchronized to PlayStation Plus cloud storage, or arrange the direct transfer while both consoles are available.
- On the destination, use Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5 or PS4) and download the required cloud saves.
- For PS4 saves, manually download them to PS5 storage even if automatic upload was enabled on the source.
- Resolve any overwrite prompt only after checking which local or cloud copy is newer.
Moving a large library while saving bandwidth
- Use a compatible USB extended-storage drive that meets the 5-Gbps, 250-GB-to-8-TB requirements and connect it directly to the source PS5.
- Keep the game installations on that drive and connect it directly to the destination.
- Play PS4 games from the drive; copy PS5 games back to console or M.2 storage before launching them.
- Transfer saves independently because the extended-storage drive does not contain PS5 saved data.
Common problems and safe fixes
The consoles do not find each other
- Verify that both PS5s are on the same modem or router, not merely connected to the internet through unrelated networks.
- Confirm that both are signed in to the same PlayStation account and running current system software.
- If Wi-Fi discovery is unreliable, connect both consoles by wired network. When both are already wired, an extra console-to-console cable is unnecessary.
The transfer appears stuck
Check Control Center > Downloads/Uploads on the destination. Game data can continue after the destination restarts, so a restart does not necessarily mean failure. Keep both consoles on and avoid network changes or internet connection tests while the transfer is active.
A save is missing
Check whether it is a PS5 or PS4 save. PS5 saves cannot be exported to USB. A PS5 save must come through direct transfer or cloud storage. A PS4 save can also come through USB, but it may require a manual download from cloud storage to PS5 storage.
A PS5 game on the USB drive will not start
That is expected behavior for PS5 games on USB extended storage. Copy the game back to internal console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before playing it. PS4 games are the ones that can run directly from the extended-storage drive.
The restore warning shows that destination data will be erased
Stop if the destination contains anything you still need. Copy or transfer that content first, or use direct Data Transfer, cloud saves, library downloads, or extended storage instead of full restore. A full backup restore is appropriate only when wiping the destination is acceptable.
What to verify before wiping the source PS5
- Every required PS5 save opens correctly on the destination.
- PS4 saves are present in PS5 storage if you used cloud storage or USB.
- Important screenshots and video clips are visible.
- Your digital games appear in the destination library, and disc games have been installed as needed.
- Games stored on USB extended storage or an M.2 SSD are accessible on the destination.
- Trophies have synchronized before the source is reset.
Once those checks pass, you can remove the old console from your setup without relying on an unverified transfer.
