On supported Windows models, Music Center for PC manages transfers; some models also accept direct copying from This PC > WALKMAN > Music. On a Mac, Sony commonly documents Content Transfer or a model-specific drag-and-drop procedure.
FLAC is listed among the formats handled by Music Center for PC, but the player itself may support fewer formats, sample rates, bit depths, or file sizes. Check the Walkman Help Guide before moving a large library, and do not enable a transfer option that converts files to AAC if preserving the original lossless files is your goal.

Start with the exact Walkman model
“Sony Walkman” covers many generations, from current Android-based players with USB-C and microSD storage to older models with different transfer software and connection modes. The correct procedure, supported formats, folder rules, and storage destinations are model-specific. Find the model number in Settings > System > About device, on the rear or side label, or on the original packaging, then open that model’s Sony Help Guide.

Do not assume that a procedure working on a recent player applies to an older one. Sony documents Music Center for PC, Content Transfer, Windows Explorer, and other model-specific methods separately. The Help Guide is also where Sony states limits for sample rate, bit depth, maximum file size, supported cards, and whether ordinary file browsing is allowed.

Transfer FLAC on Windows with Music Center for PC
Sony identifies Music Center for PC as the current Windows library and transfer application for supported Walkman models. Support for the older Media Go software has ended, so installing Media Go is not a current solution. If Sony’s page for your model does not list Music Center for PC, follow that model’s stated Windows method instead.
Prepare the player and application
- Install or open Music Center for PC on the Windows computer.
- Connect the Walkman directly to a USB port. Avoid a hub while setting up or troubleshooting recognition.
- Unlock the player. When Use USB for appears, select File Transfer.
- Wait for Windows and Music Center for PC to detect the device. Keep the screen awake long enough for the connection to finish establishing.
Import or locate the lossless tracks
Music Center for PC can manage music in its library before sending it to the player. Add the folder containing your FLAC files if the tracks are not already visible, then check the album, artist, and track information. Correcting tags before transfer makes browsing on the Walkman easier, although the player’s own display and sorting behavior remain model-dependent.
Send music to the Walkman
- Select the Walkman in Music Center for PC.
- Select the albums, artists, playlists, or individual tracks to transfer.
- Choose the application’s transfer command and select the intended destination if it offers both internal memory and a supported SD card.
- Watch the transfer status until it reports completion. Do not unplug the cable or put the computer to sleep during the operation.
- Use the application’s eject or disconnect command when available, then disconnect the cable.
Prevent an unintended AAC conversion
Music Center for PC includes an Auto assign transfer setting that can convert files to AAC. AAC is lossy, so it does not preserve the original FLAC data. If the software or model offers a transfer-mode choice, select the option that keeps the source format rather than automatic conversion. The exact label and available choices depend on the Walkman and Music Center for PC version; verify the result on the player before transferring an entire library.
Copy files directly with Windows Explorer
Some Walkman models expose their storage as a normal drive. For those models, Sony’s Help Guide states: “You can transfer music content directly by dragging and dropping it from Windows Explorer.” This route is useful when you want to preserve the existing FLAC files and folder structure without building a managed library.

Explorer procedure
- Unlock the Walkman and connect it directly to the computer with a known-good data cable.
- On the player, choose Use USB for > File Transfer.
- Open File Explorer and select This PC.
- Open the device named WALKMAN (the displayed name can vary).
- Open the Music folder. If the model’s Help Guide specifies another destination, use that location instead.
- In a second Explorer window, select the FLAC files or album folders on the computer.
- Drag them into the Walkman’s Music folder, or use copy and paste.
- Wait for all progress windows to close, then eject the device in Windows before unplugging it.
Copying a folder does not guarantee that every model will index it immediately. Some players scan after disconnection, after a restart, or after a manual library refresh. Keep album folders and filenames reasonably consistent, and do not create deeply nested paths unless the Help Guide permits them.
Transfer FLAC from a Mac
Sony lists Content Transfer for Mac and notes that the available method varies by Walkman model. A newer player may support a documented Finder drag-and-drop workflow, while a legacy model may require Sony software or a particular transfer mode. Do not infer Mac compatibility from the fact that the player appears as a USB device.
Content Transfer workflow
- Install the Mac version of Content Transfer only if Sony lists it for your exact Walkman.
- Connect the player directly to the Mac with a data-capable cable.
- Unlock the Walkman and choose File Transfer under Use USB for when that menu appears.
- Open Content Transfer and wait for the player to be recognized.
- Select the FLAC albums or folders in the source location and choose the Walkman as the destination.
- Allow the transfer to finish before ejecting the device from macOS.
Check Content Transfer’s settings for any conversion or compatibility option before starting. If an option changes the source to a compressed format, disable it when the player can play the original FLAC.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFinder or another model-specific method
If the Help Guide explicitly documents Finder, connect the Walkman, select File Transfer, open the mounted device, and copy files into the folder Sony specifies, commonly Music. Eject the Walkman in Finder after copying. Older models may not mount as ordinary storage at all; use the software and transfer mode Sony names for that model instead of forcing a generic drag-and-drop procedure.

Which transfer method should you use?
| Method | Operating system | Model requirement | Preserves source FLAC? | Library and playlist features | Storage destination |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Music Center for PC | Windows | Supported models listed by Sony | Yes, when a non-converting transfer mode is selected; Auto assign transfer may create AAC | Strongest library and playlist management | Internal memory or a supported card, when offered |
| Windows Explorer | Windows | Models whose Help Guide documents direct file access | Yes; files are copied as-is | Folder-based; no required library database | Usually the documented Music folder on internal or removable storage |
| Content Transfer | Mac | Models listed as compatible by Sony | Depends on settings and model support; avoid conversion | Basic transfer rather than full library management | Destination exposed by the model or utility |
| Finder drag-and-drop | Mac | Only models with explicit Sony instructions | Yes when copied without conversion | Folder-based | Model-specified folder, commonly Music |
Use Music Center for PC when you want managed albums, playlists, and a supported Windows workflow. Use Explorer or Finder when the model explicitly supports direct access and you want a simple, format-preserving copy. On a Mac, the model manual determines whether Content Transfer or Finder is valid; neither method is universal.
Keep FLAC, WAV, DSD, and other lossless files compatible
Music Center for PC’s format list includes FLAC (.flac), WAV, DSD, ALAC, AIFF, APE, and other formats. That list describes what the desktop software can handle, not a guarantee that every Walkman can decode every file. The player’s firmware may support a narrower selection or impose limits on resolution, channels, file size, or container type.
FLAC
FLAC is a lossless format: decoding it reproduces the stored audio samples without the data loss associated with AAC or MP3. Confirm the Walkman’s supported FLAC sample rates and bit depths before copying high-resolution albums. If a file exceeds the model’s documented limits, the player may omit it, show an error, or fail to index the album.

WAV and AIFF
WAV and AIFF can contain uncompressed PCM audio and therefore consume substantially more storage than FLAC for the same program. Verify whether the model supports the particular bit depth, sample rate, channel count, and metadata behavior of your files. Some players display less tag information from uncompressed files than from FLAC.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
ALAC, APE, and DSD
ALAC and APE are separate lossless formats, while DSD uses a different high-resolution encoding family. Their presence in Music Center for PC’s format list does not establish playback support on your Walkman. Check the model-specific Help Guide and test one representative file before transferring a large collection.
Do not assume conversion is lossless
Changing a FLAC file to AAC, MP3, or another lossy codec discards information. A later conversion back to FLAC cannot restore it. Keep an untouched archive on the computer and use a transfer mode that copies the original format whenever the Walkman supports it. If conversion is the only way to play a file on a particular model, retain the original and treat the converted copy as a separate listening version.
Choose internal memory or a supported microSD card
Many Walkman models provide internal storage, and some also accept a removable microSD card. The card slot, maximum capacity, filesystem requirements, and whether music can be indexed from the card vary by model. Confirm those details in the Help Guide before buying or formatting a card.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Check free space on the intended destination before starting a batch transfer.
- When both locations are available, select the intended destination in Music Center for PC or open the correct storage volume in Explorer or Finder.
- Do not remove a card while files are being written or while the Walkman is scanning it.
- If the card is not detected, test the player’s internal memory first; this separates a card or filesystem problem from a USB-transfer problem.
- Use a card capacity and format explicitly supported by the Walkman rather than relying on a general microSD specification.
Troubleshoot a Walkman that is not recognized
1. Select the correct USB mode
Unlock the player and look for Use USB for. Select File Transfer, not a charging-only option. If the prompt disappeared, disconnect and reconnect the cable, or open the player’s USB preferences if the model provides them. A device that charges but does not appear in Windows, macOS, or Music Center for PC is often still in the wrong USB mode.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
2. Replace the cable and change the port
Use the supplied cable or a known-good cable that carries data. USB-C connectors do not guarantee data capability: some inexpensive cables are wired for charging only. Connect directly to a computer port, bypassing a hub, monitor, keyboard, or docking station. Try another port if the device repeatedly connects and disconnects.
3. Unlock and reconnect in a clean sequence
- Close an unfinished transfer and safely eject the Walkman if the computer shows it.
- Disconnect the cable.
- Unlock the player and wake its screen.
- Reconnect directly to the computer.
- Select File Transfer and wait for the operating system to finish detecting it before opening the transfer application.
Restarting the Walkman or computer can clear a stuck USB session. Do not repeatedly pull the cable while a write operation is active.
4. Check storage and card status
A full internal memory or SD card can make a transfer fail even though the player is visible. Delete unwanted content from the correct destination, empty the computer’s recycle or trash only after confirming the originals are backed up, and retry with one small album. If internal storage works but the card does not, inspect the card’s capacity, filesystem, insertion, and model compatibility.
5. Check format and file limits
If ordinary MP3 files transfer but a particular FLAC, DSD, ALAC, APE, WAV, or AIFF file does not play, compare its format, sample rate, bit depth, channels, and size with the model’s documented limits. Copy one known-compatible FLAC as a control. A transfer can complete successfully while the player later skips an unsupported file during indexing.
6. Let indexing finish
After disconnecting, the Walkman may scan new content. Large libraries and high-resolution files can take longer to appear. Keep the player powered until the scan completes, then refresh the music database or restart it if the Help Guide provides that function. Do not copy the same album repeatedly while a scan is still running, because duplicates can be created.
Verify that the transfer preserved the original files
Before moving the rest of your library, test a small set containing one ordinary FLAC, one high-resolution FLAC if relevant, and any other format you intend to use. Play each file on the Walkman, inspect its displayed format information when the model provides it, and check that album art and tags appear as expected.
On Windows Explorer or Finder, compare the copied file names and sizes with the originals. A matching size is useful evidence that no conversion occurred, although it is not a complete integrity check. If Music Center for PC reports a conversion, or the destination file has a different extension or unexpectedly smaller size, review its transfer setting before continuing.
Quick Recap
A reliable repeatable workflow
- Identify the exact Walkman model and open its current Help Guide.
- Confirm the supported audio formats and limits, plus internal and SD-card storage rules.
- Back up the computer’s original music library.
- Use a data-capable cable and a direct USB port.
- Unlock the player and select File Transfer.
- Choose Music Center for PC on a supported Windows model, or the model-documented Explorer, Content Transfer, or Finder method.
- Disable any automatic AAC or other lossy conversion when preserving FLAC is supported.
- Transfer one test album and verify playback, tags, storage location, and file format.
- Transfer the remaining albums in manageable batches, keeping the cable connected until each batch completes.
- Eject the Walkman safely and allow its music database to finish scanning.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a charging-only USB-C cable and assuming a charging indicator means the data connection works.
- Leaving the player in a USB mode other than File Transfer.
- Routing the connection through a hub during troubleshooting.
- Installing discontinued Media Go instead of the current Sony software listed for the model.
- Assuming Music Center for PC’s broad format list equals the Walkman’s playback list.
- Enabling Auto assign transfer without checking whether it creates AAC files.
- Copying to the wrong volume when both internal memory and an SD card are mounted.
- Disconnecting during a write or removing a memory card before indexing finishes.
- Converting the only copy of a FLAC file instead of retaining the original archive.
