To make Fitbit readings available to other Android apps, connect Google Health to Health Connect and authorize the Fitbit data categories you want to share. This is a permissioned sync—not a cable transfer or guaranteed export of every historical Fitbit record. You need Android 9 or later and an adult Google Account in Google Health.
What “transferring Fitbit data” actually means
Health Connect is an Android service that lets compatible apps exchange health and fitness records under permissions you control. Fitbit data becomes available to another app only when the relevant source app writes records to Health Connect and the destination app is allowed to read them. Health Connect stores its copy locally on your phone; it is not a separate Fitbit account, cloud archive, or physical transfer device. Google describes the arrangement this way: “Your data is stored locally, on your device, and you’re in control of which apps have access to your data on Health Connect and what kind of data is shared with your connected apps.” Android Help

The current Google-documented route is through the Google Health app. It can synchronize recent Health Connect data and new records after authorization, but you should not assume that every historical Fitbit measurement will be copied. Health Connect’s ordinary-data access rules generally cover the last 30 days plus new data after access is granted; health-record data follows a different rule. The exact records available also depend on what Fitbit and your other apps support.

Requirements before you start
- Android 9 or newer. Google Health’s Health Connect integration requires Android 9 or later.
- An adult Google Account in Google Health. The setup flow is not documented for supervised child accounts.
- Google Health installed and signed in. Use the account that you want associated with the shared data.
- A Fitbit account you can still access. Google says Fitbit accounts could no longer be used to access Fitbit after May 19, 2026; users had to move their account to Google to continue access. If your account was not moved before that deadline, resolve the account-access issue first.
- A compatible Android app on the other side. The destination app must support Health Connect and request permission to read the categories you intend to use.
- Current app versions and an internet connection. Updating Google Health, Fitbit and the destination app reduces setup failures, although Health Connect itself stores data locally on the phone.
On Android 14 and later, Health Connect is integrated into Android Settings. On Android 13 and earlier, Google says to install the Health Connect app from the Play Store. The Google Health connection still uses the Google Health app’s Connections area in either case. See Google’s Android Health Connect guide for the operating-system distinction.
Android version determines where Health Connect appears
| Android version | How to access Health Connect | What remains the same |
|---|---|---|
| Android 14 or newer | Open Android Settings and use the built-in Health Connect section. | Google Health still connects through Connections → Partner apps → Sync your favorite health apps → Set up. |
| Android 13 or older (but Android 9+) | Download or update the Health Connect app from Google Play. | You choose data categories and grant read/write access in the same Google Health setup flow. |
| Android 8 or older | Not supported for this documented Google Health connection. | Upgrade the phone or use another supported device before attempting setup. |
Step-by-step: connect Fitbit-related data through Google Health
1. Confirm that your Fitbit account is usable
Open Fitbit and verify that you can sign in and see your existing data. Google’s account-migration instructions state that Fitbit access required moving eligible accounts to a Google Account by May 19, 2026. The move can retain the historical Fitbit data you choose to transfer, but migration cannot be undone after completion. Account migration is separate from Health Connect: moving the account preserves access to Fitbit, while Health Connect controls which records Android apps can exchange.
Use Google’s current migration guidance if you still need to understand the account state: How to move your Fitbit Account to a Google Account. Do not treat the migration page as a Health Connect setup page; completing one does not automatically authorize the other.
2. Open the Google Health connection screen
- Open the Google Health app and sign in with your adult Google Account.
- Tap Connections.
- Open Partner apps.
- Under Add connections, tap Sync your favorite health apps.
- Tap Set up, then review and accept the setup information shown by Google Health.
The labels above are Google’s documented current path. If an app update changes the wording slightly, look for the Connections area, Partner apps and the option to sync favorite health apps rather than searching for a one-time “export Fitbit” button.
3. Select the categories you want to share
Google Health presents data categories and asks for Health Connect access. Select only what you need. Depending on device and service support, examples can include steps, distance, calories, weight, heart rate, sleep stages and active minutes. Google notes that the data collected varies by device or service, so these are examples—not a promise that every Fitbit model supplies every category. The available list in your permission screen is the authoritative list for your account and devices. Google’s privacy FAQ explains the category examples and variability: Google Health privacy FAQs.

Read each permission request before approving it. A source app generally needs permission to write a category to Health Connect, while the destination app needs permission to read it. Granting one side does not automatically grant the other. For example, allowing step data to be written does not mean a calorie-tracking app can read those steps.
4. Decide whether to allow historical and background access
The setup flow can ask for additional access to historic data and to run in the background. These are user-controlled choices. Historic access affects what existing records the connected app may read; background access allows synchronization without requiring you to open the apps each time. Approve broader access only when it matches the app’s purpose and your privacy expectations. You can review or change these choices later in Health Connect permissions.
5. Grant Health Connect permissions
Follow the Health Connect permission screen and approve the requested read and write categories. If Fitbit or another source app is not listed as a writer for a category, Google Health cannot manufacture that record; the source must support publishing it. Likewise, if your intended destination is not listed as a reader, that app cannot receive the category through Health Connect.
When Android asks you to confirm access, check the app name and each category. Avoid approving unrelated categories simply to make setup finish. The practical result you want is a clear chain: source app writes the selected category, Health Connect stores it, and destination app reads it.
6. Check the sync result
- Return to the Google Health app.
- Open Connections → Partner apps.
- Tap Manage Health Connect.
- Review the displayed sync state and most recent sync time.
A recent timestamp indicates that a sync has completed. A Syncing label means the process is still running; wait before concluding that records are missing. Google documents this status check in How do I use Health Connect with the Google Health app?.

Which Fitbit data can appear?
Possible categories include:
- Steps
- Distance
- Calories
- Weight
- Heart rate
- Sleep stages
- Active minutes
This list is illustrative. The device, Fitbit service, Android version and app implementation determine which categories are actually written. A permission for heart rate, for example, does not prove that your particular tracker or Fitbit configuration publishes heart-rate records to Health Connect. Inspect the categories offered during setup and then inspect the resulting records in Health Connect or the destination app.
Different apps can represent the same measurement differently. One app may display daily totals while another displays individual samples. Time zones, duplicate entries and each app’s filtering rules can therefore make totals look different even when both apps have access to Health Connect.
How much Fitbit history will sync?
Do not promise yourself a complete historical Fitbit backfill. Google’s general Health Connect documentation says connected apps can access the last 30 days of ordinary data and new data after access is granted. That ordinary-data limit does not apply to health records, which follow a separate rule. The practical implication is that a newly connected app may initially show recent records rather than your entire Fitbit lifetime.
Google Health’s sync process also starts with recent Health Connect data. If older Fitbit readings are absent, first verify that they were written to Health Connect and that the destination app requested historic access. Even with that permission, availability depends on the source and Health Connect’s applicable data rules. A missing record is not proof that Fitbit deleted it; it may never have been written to Health Connect or may fall outside the connected app’s access window.
Fitbit account migration is a different history question. Google says migration keeps the historical Fitbit data you choose to move, but it cannot be reversed. That retained Fitbit history should not be described as an automatic Health Connect export.

Permission model: check both sides of the connection
| Check | What it controls | Typical symptom when missing |
|---|---|---|
| Source-app write permission | Whether Fitbit or another source can place a category in Health Connect. | The category never appears in Health Connect, so no destination app can read it. |
| Destination-app read permission | Whether the app you want to use can retrieve the category from Health Connect. | Health Connect contains records, but the destination app shows none. |
| Historic-data permission | Whether an app may read eligible records that predate the connection. | New records appear, while older eligible records do not. |
| Background permission | Whether synchronization can continue without opening the apps manually. | Data updates only after you launch the app or trigger a refresh. |
Review these controls in Health Connect whenever a category is missing. Permissions are granular, so changing access for steps does not automatically change access for sleep, weight or heart rate.
Troubleshooting when data does not appear
The setup option is missing
- Confirm that you are using the Google Health app, not Google Fit. The documented path is Connections → Partner apps → Sync your favorite health apps.
- Check that the phone runs Android 9 or later and that the Google Health app is updated.
- On Android 13 or earlier, install or update Health Connect from Google Play. On Android 14 or later, look for Health Connect in Android Settings.
- Make sure the signed-in Google Account is an adult account supported by Google Health.
Fitbit data is not listed in Health Connect
- Open the source app and confirm that Fitbit data is present and current.
- Check whether the specific category is supported for your device or service. Google’s category list is not a guarantee for every Fitbit setup.
- Review Health Connect permissions and confirm that the source has write access for that category.
- Update Google Health and the relevant source app, then reconnect if Google Health prompts you.
Health Connect has records, but the destination app is empty
- Open the destination app’s Health Connect permissions and enable read access for the exact category.
- Check whether the app supports the record type and date range you are viewing.
- Allow historic access if you need eligible pre-connection records.
- Refresh or reopen the destination app after permissions change. A displayed Syncing state means you should wait for completion before diagnosing the result.
Only recent records appear
This can be normal. The ordinary Health Connect access rule covers the last 30 days and new data after authorization. Confirm historic-access permission, then check whether older records were ever written to Health Connect. Do not assume that reconnecting will create a complete Fitbit archive.
Sync appears stuck
- Open Connections → Partner apps → Manage Health Connect and check whether the status still says Syncing.
- Keep the phone connected and give the process time to finish, especially when many recent records are available.
- Update Google Health and the connected apps.
- Review read/write permissions on both sides.
- If Google Health asks you to reconnect, follow that prompt rather than repeatedly toggling unrelated permissions.
If the status shows a recent completed sync but a category remains absent, the issue is more likely unsupported source data, a missing permission, or the destination app’s own display and filtering rules.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Privacy and data storage considerations
Health Connect stores its copy locally on the Android device. Connected apps retain their own copy of data they shared, and each app’s privacy policy governs that copy. Because permissions are category-specific, you can limit an app to the measurements it genuinely needs instead of granting all health and wellness data.

Revisit permissions after installing, removing or replacing health apps. Disconnecting an app stops future access but does not necessarily erase copies that the app already stored. Use the app’s own deletion controls and privacy documentation if you need to remove previously received records.

Fitbit account migration is separate from Health Connect
Google’s Fitbit-account migration and Health Connect authorization solve different problems:
| Task | Purpose | Can it be undone? |
|---|---|---|
| Move a Fitbit account to a Google Account | Maintain access to Fitbit after Google’s May 19, 2026 access deadline and retain the Fitbit history you choose to move. | No. Google says completed migration cannot be undone. |
| Connect Google Health to Health Connect | Permit selected health and fitness categories to move between compatible Android apps. | Permissions can be reviewed or changed; this does not reverse Fitbit-account migration. |
Complete account access first, then configure Health Connect permissions. Neither step should be described as a substitute for the other.
Do not use the Google Fit switch for this workflow
Google Fit has its own integration. To connect Google Fit, Google documents a separate setting in Fit named Sync Fit with Health Connect. That switch is relevant when Google Fit is your intended source or destination. It is not required merely to make Fitbit-related records available through the Google Health and Health Connect workflow. Follow Google’s separate instructions only when Google Fit is part of your plan: Health Connect on Google Fit.

What iPhone users should do instead
The procedure above is for Android. Google’s Health Connect instructions direct iPhone users to Apple Health rather than this Android Health Connect workflow. An iPhone therefore should not be expected to show the Android Settings or Google Health connection path described here. See Google’s platform guidance before attempting setup on iOS: Google Health Help.
Quick decision guide
| Your situation | Next action |
|---|---|
| You have Android 14+, a migrated Fitbit account and want another Android app to read selected records. | Use Google Health’s Connections → Partner apps → Sync your favorite health apps → Set up flow, then grant category-specific permissions. |
| You have Android 13 or older but at least Android 9. | Install or update Health Connect from Google Play, then complete the same Google Health setup flow. |
| You cannot access Fitbit because the account was never moved to Google. | Resolve the Fitbit-to-Google account migration issue first; Health Connect cannot restore Fitbit account access. |
| You need a complete, downloadable lifetime archive. | Do not rely on Health Connect synchronization; its documented connected-app access is not a promise of a full historical export. |
| You want Google Fit to exchange data with Health Connect. | Use Google Fit’s separate Sync Fit with Health Connect setting. |
| You use an iPhone. | Follow Google’s Apple Health direction rather than the Android Health Connect steps. |
Bottom line
The supported Android method is a permissioned connection: make sure your Fitbit account is accessible through Google, open Google Health, choose Connections → Partner apps → Sync your favorite health apps → Set up, select the categories you want, grant read/write and any historic or background access you accept, and verify the result under Manage Health Connect. Treat the result as controlled app-to-app sharing of available records—not as a guaranteed copy of every Fitbit measurement in your account.
