One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe best method depends on how much you are moving. For a new MacBook and a broad move of supported personal data, use Apple’s Windows Migration Assistant. For a few folders, connect to a Windows shared folder over SMB. An external drive is the most portable fallback, while an existing cloud-sync account can handle selected files when both computers have reliable internet access.
None of these methods requires erasing the Windows PC. Migration Assistant copies supported information; it does not move Windows applications into macOS or make them runnable there.

Choose the transfer method first
| What you need to move | Best starting point | What you need | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Most supported personal data on a new MacBook | Windows Migration Assistant | Compatible assistant version, both computers ready, and a pairing code | It transfers supported data, not Windows programs; compatibility varies by macOS version |
| A few folders or files on the same premises | Windows SMB sharing | A trusted local network, a shared Windows folder, and Windows credentials | Sharing, firewall, permissions, or filename problems can interrupt copying |
| A large transfer without relying on the network | Portable external drive | A drive with enough capacity and a cable or adapter that fits the MacBook | Formatting can erase the drive; NTFS may be read-only on the Mac |
| Selected files already stored online | Your existing cloud-sync service | The same account, enough cloud space, and reliable internet | You must verify that synchronization has completed before deleting local originals |
Migration Assistant is the default for a whole-user move. SMB is usually quickest for a small, targeted selection on a local network. An external drive avoids network setup, and cloud sync is convenient only when the account and files are already organized for it.

Prepare both computers before copying anything
- Install pending Windows and macOS updates, then restart both computers.
- Close applications that may be changing the files you intend to copy, especially mail, photo, database, and document applications.
- Make sure the MacBook has enough free storage for the selected data. Leave additional space for macOS, indexing, and future use rather than filling the internal drive completely.
- Keep the original files on the PC until you have opened representative copies on the MacBook and checked the folders you care about.
- Use a power adapter for both computers during a large transfer. Do not allow either computer to sleep or disconnect while files are being copied.
- Record any encrypted, password-protected, or application-specific files that may require their original software or credentials after the move.
- If you are using a drive, check its capacity, connector, filesystem, and contents before erasing or reformatting it.
A transfer is a copy operation, not a backup strategy. Keep the Windows originals and any existing backup until you have verified the MacBook copy.

Method 1: Use Windows Migration Assistant for a broad move
Migration Assistant is Apple’s purpose-built route for moving supported user information from Windows to a Mac. Apple lists contacts, calendars, email accounts, documents, photos, and other data that can be placed in appropriate Mac locations. It does not delete information from the PC or replace macOS on the Mac.
Check the assistant version against macOS
Download the Windows Migration Assistant release that matches the MacBook’s macOS. Apple’s indexed compatibility snapshot dated October 13, 2026 lists these pairings:
| Windows Migration Assistant | Supported source Windows version | Mac versions listed by Apple |
|---|---|---|
| 3.2.0.0 | Windows 10 or later | macOS 27, Tahoe 26, Sequoia 15, and Sonoma 14 |
| 2.4.5.0 | Windows 7 or later | macOS Ventura 13 and Monterey 12 |
| 2.3.1.0 | Windows 7 or later | macOS Big Sur 11 |
| Older releases | As specified by Apple | Earlier macOS versions |
Apple changes this table as macOS releases change, so check the current Windows Migration Assistant compatibility table immediately before downloading. Do not install a release solely because its number appears in an older guide.

Start the transfer during Mac setup
- On the Windows PC, install the Migration Assistant release for the MacBook’s macOS. Close other applications when the installer or assistant requests it.
- On the MacBook’s first-run setup screens, choose the option to transfer information from a Windows PC when it appears.
- Keep both computers nearby. Apple’s preparation guidance calls for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to be enabled. For macOS 13 or earlier, or when the wireless connection is unreliable, connect both computers to the same network or directly with Ethernet as applicable.
- Open Migration Assistant on Windows if it is not already running. On a MacBook that has already been set up, open Migration Assistant from the Utilities folder or find it with Spotlight.
- On the MacBook, choose From a Windows PC. Wait for the Mac to display a security code.
- Enter that code in Migration Assistant on the Windows PC. Confirm that the code identifies the intended MacBook before continuing.
- Review the categories shown by Migration Assistant and select the information to copy. The amount of data can affect how long the process takes; Apple’s support procedure does not promise a universal completion time.
- Allow the transfer to finish without closing either assistant. When the MacBook presents the transferred account or folders, sign in and inspect the results.
If the MacBook has already completed setup, opening Migration Assistant later does not require you to erase the Mac. The transfer runs from the Utilities folder or Spotlight and still uses the code displayed by the Mac.
Understand where Migration Assistant places data
- Documents and other files from a Windows user’s home folders generally appear in the corresponding Mac home folder.
- Photos may be imported into Photos or may need to be added manually, depending on the source and the items selected.
- Non-system files stored on the Windows system disk or on other available disks may require an administrator login. Apple places these files in a Shared folder rather than silently assigning them to a user account.
- Some applications may not transfer because they are incompatible, and a transferred Windows application is not thereby made usable in macOS.
Plan to reinstall Mac-compatible applications separately and sign in to them again. Migration Assistant is a personal-data migration tool, not a Windows-program conversion tool.
Fix a Migration Assistant connection failure
- Confirm that the Windows assistant release matches the MacBook’s macOS and that both systems are updated.
- Temporarily disable antivirus, firewall, or VPN settings only if they are blocking the connection, and restore the protections after the transfer. On a managed computer, consult the administrator before changing security settings.
- For older macOS versions, place both computers on the same network or use Ethernet. A PC without Bluetooth Low Energy may prompt for a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter; check compatibility before buying one.
- Keep the computers close together, awake, and connected to power. Reopen Migration Assistant and generate a new code if the original session has expired.
Method 2: Copy selected folders through a Windows SMB share
Server Message Block (SMB) sharing is practical when the Windows PC and MacBook are on the same trusted local network and you want only specific folders. The Windows PC remains the source; the Mac connects to the shared folder and copies files in Finder.

Share the folder on Windows
- Connect the PC and MacBook to the same local network. Avoid exposing a personal file share on an untrusted public network.
- In File Explorer, right-click the folder to share and open its sharing or properties controls. Enable sharing for that folder and grant the Windows account you will use permission to read the files; grant write permission only when the Mac must upload files to the PC.
- Confirm that Windows network discovery and file sharing are enabled for the current network profile. Ensure the firewall allows file-sharing connections.
- Note the Windows computer name or its local IP address, the share name, and the username and password that have access.
Connect from Finder
- On the MacBook, open Finder.
- Choose Go > Connect to Server.
- Enter an address in one of these forms:
smb://computer-name/shareorsmb://IP-address/share. Replace the examples with the actual Windows computer name or local IP address and the shared folder name. - Select Connect, authenticate with the Windows username and password, and choose the shared folder when Finder presents available shares. You can also browse for the Windows computer if it appears in the network list.
- Copy the required files to a folder on the MacBook. Wait for the copy to finish before disconnecting the share.
If Finder cannot see the PC, test the address directly, verify that both computers are on the same network, check Windows sharing and firewall rules, and confirm that the account has permission for the specific folder. A successful login to Windows does not automatically grant access to every shared folder.
Handle files that stop copying
If a copy fails at the same file repeatedly, inspect its name and the names of its parent folders. Windows disallows characters including <, >, :, quotation marks, /, backslash, |, ?, and *. Rename the offending file on Windows, then retry. Also check for path-length problems, locked files, and insufficient destination space.
Method 3: Move files with an external drive
An external hard drive, portable SSD, thumb drive, USB drive, or flash memory card is useful when the local network is inconvenient or the transfer is large. A USB-C, USB-A, or other adapter may be needed to match the MacBook’s ports and the drive’s cable.

Choose a filesystem that both computers can use
| Filesystem | Apple’s cross-platform guidance | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| ExFAT | Recommended for a Windows-compatible disk larger than 32 GB | Formatting erases existing contents; back up first |
| MS-DOS (FAT) | Recommended for a Windows-compatible disk 32 GB or smaller | Formatting erases existing contents and FAT has practical file-size limitations |
| NTFS | May be readable by macOS | macOS may not be able to write to it; Disk Utility does not support formatting NTFS |
Do not format a drive merely because it is convenient. First open it on Windows, verify that any existing files are backed up elsewhere, and identify the correct physical disk. Apple’s erase procedure deletes the selected disk’s contents.
Transfer through the drive
- On Windows, connect the drive and copy the selected files to it. Keep the PC originals in place.
- Wait until Windows reports that copying is complete, then use the operating system’s safe-eject command.
- Connect the drive to the MacBook, using an adapter if required. Open Finder and confirm the drive and its folders appear.
- Copy the files into the intended Mac folder. If macOS can read but not save to the drive, check whether it is NTFS and use a different destination or a correctly formatted drive.
- Eject the drive from Finder after the copy finishes. Open several files from the MacBook’s internal storage to verify that they are intact.
Method 4: Use an existing cloud-sync service
Cloud synchronization can be convenient for selected files when the Windows PC already uses a service such as OneDrive. This route depends on account access, available cloud space, a reliable internet connection, and a confirmed completed sync on both computers.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- On Windows, select the folders that the existing service should synchronize. If Files On-Demand or selective-sync controls are enabled, make sure the files needed for the move are actually available locally or marked for synchronization.
- Wait until the service reports that the selected files are synchronized. Do not rely on a folder appearing in the cloud interface alone; check the service’s status indicators and open representative files online when possible.
- Install or open the same service on the MacBook and sign in with the same account.
- Choose which folders to sync to the MacBook, or access them online if local copies are unnecessary.
- Wait for the MacBook’s synchronization to complete, then open representative documents, photos, and other important files.
The available documentation for this workflow does not establish current storage quotas, prices, or a complete migration plan. Check the account’s current allowance and synchronization status in the service before relying on it for a large move. Keep the Windows originals until the MacBook copy has been verified.

Verify the MacBook copy before cleaning up the PC
- Compare the major folders you intended to move, including Documents, Desktop, Pictures, Downloads, and any custom project folders.
- Open files from different formats, dates, and sizes. Check that photos display correctly, documents retain their contents, and archives can be opened.
- Check hidden or application-specific folders only if you understand what they contain; copying them does not guarantee that a Windows application can use them on macOS.
- Confirm that email accounts, calendars, contacts, and photos are present in the Mac applications where you expect them.
- Check the MacBook’s available storage and keep a backup of irreplaceable files.
- Only after verification should you delete, repurpose, or reformat the Windows source or transfer drive.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Migration Assistant does not pair | Wrong assistant version, blocked security software, network mismatch, or missing Bluetooth Low Energy support | Check Apple’s current version table, update both systems, temporarily address blocking firewall/VPN software, use the same network or Ethernet for older macOS, and check whether a Bluetooth adapter is required |
| The Windows PC is not visible in Finder | Sharing, discovery, firewall, address, or permission problem | Connect with smb://computer-name/share or an IP address, verify the share and account permissions, and allow file-sharing traffic on the trusted network |
| SMB copying stops on one filename | A Windows-disallowed character, locked file, path issue, or permission problem | Rename the file, shorten the path if necessary, close the application using it, and retry with an account that can read the file |
| The Mac sees an external drive but cannot save to it | The drive is probably NTFS or otherwise mounted read-only | Copy from it to the Mac, then use a backed-up drive formatted as ExFAT or MS-DOS (FAT) when cross-platform writing is required |
| The cloud folder is incomplete | Sync is still running, selective sync excluded items, or the account lacks space | Review sync status and selected folders on both computers, confirm account access and available space, and wait for completion before deleting originals |
Which method should you use?
Use Migration Assistant when the MacBook is replacing the Windows PC and you want supported contacts, calendars, mail accounts, documents, and other user data in the appropriate Mac locations. Use SMB when you can identify a few folders and both computers share a trusted network. Use an ExFAT-formatted external drive when you need a portable, network-independent path or a fallback after a failed migration. Use cloud sync when the files are already organized in an account that both computers can access.
Whichever route you choose, treat the Windows files as the authoritative originals until the MacBook copy has been opened and checked. That single verification step prevents a transfer problem from becoming permanent data loss.
