Quick Share moves photos, videos, documents and other supported files between a nearby Android device and a Windows PC without a cable. Install the correct Windows app, turn on Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi (or Ethernet), keep both devices on the same network within 5 metres, then choose the other device from Quick Share and accept the request. Google states that files shared with Quick Share are encrypted.
Check that your devices are compatible
Quick Share works when both devices meet Google’s published requirements. Check these points before troubleshooting discovery or transfer errors.

| Device or setting | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Windows computer | 64-bit Windows 10 or later |
| ARM-based Windows computer | Windows 11 or later |
| Android device | Android 6.0 or later |
| Wireless connections | Bluetooth on, plus Wi‑Fi or Ethernet available |
| Network | Both devices connected to the same network |
| Distance | Keep the devices within 5 metres |
These are compatibility and discovery requirements, not a promise of a particular transfer speed or file-size limit. Google documents availability in the United States and most countries, with Cuba, Iran, North Korea and Syria excluded in the guidance available at the time of writing. Regional availability can change, so check the current Google Android Help instructions if Quick Share is unavailable where you live.

Most Windows PCs: use Google’s app
- Download and install Quick Share from the official Google Android Help page.
- Open Quick Share after installation. Use a standard, guest or child Windows account; do not launch the app as administrator.
- Sign in with a Google Account if you want all available options.
- Choose a name for the PC and select who can share with it. You can change this visibility choice later.
Running the app as administrator can interfere with Windows drag-and-drop and is specifically something Google advises against.

Samsung PCs: install Samsung’s Windows version
If the computer is a Samsung PC, install Samsung Quick Share from the Microsoft Store rather than Google’s Windows package. The Android device can still use the normal Quick Share sharing flow; the important exception is the Windows application used on the Samsung computer.
Prepare both devices before sending
- Turn on Bluetooth on the Android device and in Windows.
- Connect the phone and PC to the same Wi‑Fi network, or make sure the required Wi‑Fi or Ethernet connection is available.
- Place the devices within 5 metres and remove obstacles or distance that could weaken discovery.
- Open Quick Share on Windows so it can receive requests.
- Review the receiver’s visibility setting. A device set to No one will not appear to other devices.
On Android, the available visibility choices are Your devices, Contacts and Everyone for 10 minutes. The temporary Everyone setting returns to the previous choice after ten minutes. On Windows, the choices are Everyone, Contacts, Your devices and No one. Google recommends signing in and using Contacts or Your devices when you want a more private setup.
Understand the network requirement
Quick Share uses nearby-device discovery rather than a cloud folder. Both devices therefore need Bluetooth enabled and a usable Wi‑Fi or Ethernet connection, and Google says they should be connected to the same network. A shared network name does not always guarantee that two devices can communicate: office, school and guest networks may isolate devices from one another. If discovery works at home but not on a managed network, the network policy is a likely variable to test.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The 5-metre guidance is a practical proximity limit for discovery. It is not a measured range guarantee or a transfer-speed rating. Keep the phone and PC close while pairing and during the copy, especially when diagnosing an intermittent connection.
Send files from Android to Windows
- On the Android phone or tablet, open the photo, video, document or other file you want to send.
- Tap Share, then choose Quick Share from the Android share menu. On some devices you may need to swipe through the share options to find it.
- Wait for the nearby-device list and select the Windows computer. The PC name is the name chosen during Windows setup.
- Look at the Windows computer for an incoming request. Accept it when prompted.
- After the transfer completes, open the Windows Downloads folder and then the Quick Share folder. Received files are saved there.
If the PC is not listed, do not keep retrying the share command immediately. First check the Windows visibility choice, Bluetooth, network, distance and whether the Windows app is open, then try the share again.
What to expect during the first transfer
The sender selects a nearby device, but the receiver still controls whether the request is accepted. This confirmation step is why the Windows screen should be visible and why Quick Share notifications must be allowed. On Android, a recipient receiving from another person should keep the receiving screen unlocked while accepting. Once accepted, leave both devices within the supported distance until the transfer finishes.
Send files from Windows to Android
Using the Quick Share window
- Open Quick Share on Windows.
- Select files in File Explorer and drag them into the Quick Share window, or use the app’s file-selection control.
- Select the Android phone or tablet from the nearby-device list.
- Choose Share.
- Unlock the Android device if necessary and accept the incoming request on its receiving screen.
Using File Explorer’s context menu
If dragging files into the app does nothing, right-click the file in File Explorer and choose Send with Quick Share. Confirm that Quick Share was not opened as administrator, because elevated launch mode can prevent drag-and-drop behavior.
The Android recipient must accept the request. If the phone is locked or its receiving screen is not available, unlock it and try again.

Control who can discover your devices
Windows visibility
Open Quick Share on Windows and use its visibility controls to choose Everyone, Contacts, Your devices or No one. Everyone makes the PC easier to find on a shared network, while Contacts or Your devices limits routine discovery. Set No one when you do not want the PC to receive Quick Share requests.
Android visibility
Android offers Your devices, Contacts and Everyone for 10 minutes. The ten-minute option is useful when another person needs to send you one file, because Android automatically restores the previous visibility setting afterward.
When Android is in Receive mode, the receiving screen may be visible to nearby people. Exit that mode when you finish. The Android help guidance also says to keep the receiving screen unlocked when receiving from someone else.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA practical privacy sequence
- Use Your devices for a phone and PC signed in to the same Google Account when that option is available.
- Use Contacts when approved contacts need to discover the device.
- Switch to Everyone for 10 minutes only for a short receiving window on Android.
- Return to the narrower setting or leave Receive mode when the transfer is complete.
These settings affect discovery; they do not change where Windows stores received files. Windows transfers continue to appear in Downloads/Quick Share.
Security and privacy considerations
Google Android Help states, “When you share files, they’re encrypted.” Encryption protects the contents while Quick Share handles the transfer, but visibility still determines who can send a request. For a personal phone and PC, Your devices is the narrowest routine choice. Use Contacts when approved contacts need to find you, and switch back from temporary Everyone visibility after the transfer window closes.
Do not confuse encryption with automatic acceptance. The receiver still sees a request and must accept it. If a shared computer is in a public or busy area, avoid leaving Windows set to Everyone indefinitely; choose Contacts, Your devices or No one according to how you use the PC.
Troubleshoot devices that do not appear
1. Confirm the basic connection state
- Verify that Quick Share is installed and enabled on both devices.
- Turn Bluetooth off and on again on both devices.
- Check that Wi‑Fi or Ethernet is available and that both devices are on the same network.
- Move the phone and PC closer together, staying within 5 metres.
- Check the receiver’s visibility setting and make sure it is not set to No one.
2. Test a restrictive office or school network
Some managed networks block device-to-device communication even when both devices show the same Wi‑Fi name. Google suggests creating a hotspot on the phone and connecting the Windows PC to that hotspot, then trying Quick Share again. This changes the local network path without requiring an internet connection from a separate router.

4. Consider Bluetooth Low Energy discovery limits
Google notes that a Windows computer without support for Bluetooth Low Energy extended advertising may be difficult for other people to find and share with on certain networks. This is a possible discovery limitation, not evidence that every PC needs a particular adapter. Check the computer’s Bluetooth hardware and drivers before buying anything.
5. Isolate one variable at a time
Use one small file for testing, keep the devices beside one another, and temporarily choose a visibility setting that permits discovery. If that works, restore your preferred privacy setting and test the original files. This sequence distinguishes a visibility or network problem from a problem tied to a particular transfer attempt without assuming a file-size limit that Google has not published.

Android receiving state
Keep the Android receiving screen unlocked while accepting a transfer from another person. If the request disappears, return to Quick Share, make the phone discoverable, and ask the sender to initiate the transfer again.
App and device restart
When the progress indicator remains stuck, cancel the attempt if possible, close Quick Share on both devices, and reopen it. Restart the phone or PC if the app does not recover. Confirm that the receiver is not occupied with another transfer before retrying.
Drag-and-drop failures
Use File Explorer’s right-click command Send with Quick Share instead of dragging. Also verify that Quick Share is running under a normal Windows account and was not opened as administrator.
Quick Share versus a USB cable
Quick Share is the convenient wireless option when the devices are nearby and can join the same network. USB is a practical fallback when wireless discovery is blocked or when you prefer a direct cable connection.
| Method | What you need | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quick Share | Compatible Android and Windows versions, Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi or Ethernet, same network and proximity | Wireless exchange of photos, videos and documents between nearby devices | Discovery can fail on restricted networks or with incompatible Bluetooth Low Energy advertising support |
| USB file transfer | A compatible USB data cable and the appropriate connectors | Direct wired copying when wireless sharing is unavailable | Not every USB cable supports data transfer |
For the wired method, connect the Android device with a USB data-transfer cable, unlock the phone, and choose the file-transfer option when Android presents its USB notification. Google’s Android and computer transfer guide warns that some USB cables provide charging only. Check both connector compatibility and whether the cable carries data; a cable is not required for Quick Share itself.

USB is not a prerequisite, accessory or special adapter for Quick Share. It is simply a separate method for cases where Bluetooth, network policy or proximity prevents wireless sharing. Because connectors vary between phones and computers, verify that both ends fit and that the cable is rated for data before relying on it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Quick Share can and cannot tell you about speed
The published guidance establishes compatibility, proximity and connection requirements but does not provide an independently measured transfer-speed figure or a universal file-size ceiling. Actual completion time will vary with the devices, network and files involved. Treat the 5-metre value as a supported proximity guideline, not as a performance benchmark.
A large video may therefore take longer than a small document, but there is no supported number that can predict the time for every phone, PC and network. Avoid judging compatibility solely by an expected speed. First confirm that the devices discover one another, that the receiver accepts the request and that notifications are visible.
Quick checklist
- Windows is 64-bit Windows 10 or later, or Windows 11 on ARM hardware.
- Android is version 6.0 or later.
- Google Quick Share is installed on most PCs; Samsung PCs use Samsung Quick Share from Microsoft Store.
- Quick Share is not running as administrator.
- Bluetooth is enabled on both devices.
- Wi‑Fi or Ethernet is available and both devices use the same network.
- The devices are within 5 metres.
- The receiver’s visibility allows discovery.
- Windows notifications are enabled and Focus Assist or Do not disturb is not hiding requests.
- Received Windows files are in Downloads/Quick Share.
Following that sequence gives you the supported wireless path first, while a verified USB data cable remains a dependable fallback when the network or discovery conditions cannot be met.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Windows versions support Quick Share?
Google lists 64-bit Windows 10 or later. ARM-based Windows computers require Windows 11 or later. Samsung PCs should use Samsung Quick Share from the Microsoft Store.
Do Android and Windows need to be on the same Wi‑Fi network?
Google says both devices should be connected to the same network, with Bluetooth on and Wi‑Fi or Ethernet available. A managed network may block device-to-device traffic even when the network name matches.
Where does Windows save files received with Quick Share?
Open the Windows Downloads folder, then open the Quick Share folder. Received files are saved in Downloads/Quick Share.
Why is my Windows PC missing from Android’s Quick Share list?
Check that Quick Share is open, Bluetooth is enabled, both devices have Wi‑Fi or Ethernet and use the same network, the devices are within 5 metres, and Windows visibility is not set to No one. Reopen the app and try again. A managed network or Bluetooth Low Energy extended-advertising limitation can also affect discovery.
