For most people, Google Quick Share is the simplest way to move files wirelessly between an Android phone and a Windows PC. Android 6.0 and later includes Quick Share; a compatible Windows computer needs the appropriate Quick Share app. You can send in either direction, but both devices must be discoverable, nearby, and ready to accept the transfer. Google specifies a range of about 16 feet (5 meters), and says Quick Share transfers use end-to-end encryption. Read the requirements first, then follow the direction-specific steps below.
Which wireless method should you use?
There are two practical methods covered here. Quick Share is the general-purpose choice for nearby Android-to-Windows and Windows-to-Android transfers. Phone Link with Link to Windows is an alternative when your phone and PC already use Microsoft’s connected-device features and meet its stricter version and device requirements.

| Method | Best fit | Important requirements and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Google Quick Share | Nearby transfers in either direction | Android 6.0 or later; compatible 64-bit Windows PC; Bluetooth on both devices; Wi-Fi or Ethernet on the PC; visibility must allow discovery. Samsung PCs use Samsung’s Quick Share app rather than Google’s Windows app. |
| Phone Link + Link to Windows | People who already pair an eligible Android phone with Windows | Android 10 or later, supported phone, same Wi-Fi network for setup, Microsoft account sign-in, and minimum app versions for file sharing. Transfers are for locally saved files. |
| Windows Nearby sharing | Sharing between nearby Windows PCs | Microsoft documents this as a Windows-to-Windows feature. It does not by itself provide Android-to-Windows transfers. |
Official documentation does not provide a comparable speed test for these methods, so do not choose between them based on an advertised megabytes-per-second figure.

What you need before using Quick Share
Android requirements
- The phone or tablet must run Android 6.0 or later. Check under Settings > About phone (the exact menu name varies by manufacturer).
- Quick Share must be available in the Android share sheet or quick settings. Install system updates if the feature is missing.
Windows requirements
- Use a 64-bit Windows 10 or later PC. Google specifies Windows 11 or later for ARM-based PCs.
- On a non-Samsung PC, install Google’s Quick Share for Windows. On a Samsung PC, install Samsung’s Quick Share app from the Microsoft Store instead. Google gives separate instructions for those computer types in its Quick Share support guide.
- Bluetooth must be turned on. The PC also needs Wi-Fi or Ethernet enabled, even when the transfer is not using the internet.
Google warns that some Windows networks may not discover the computer if Windows lacks support for Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) extended advertising. That is a discovery limitation, not a guarantee that adding any particular adapter will fix the problem.

Distance and security
Keep the devices close together. Google’s Quick Share Windows page specifies a distance of 16 feet (5 meters). Every transfer requires the receiving device to confirm it, and Google states that “All Quick Share transfers are protected by E2E encryption.” See the product details at Android’s Quick Share page.
Set up Quick Share on Android and Windows
- On the Windows PC, install the correct app: Google’s Quick Share for Windows on a non-Samsung computer, or Samsung’s Quick Share app on a Samsung computer.
- Turn on Bluetooth on the phone and PC. In Windows, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices and enable Bluetooth.
- Make sure the PC has Wi-Fi or Ethernet enabled. The PC does not need to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the phone for the basic Quick Share workflow, but its network connection is required by the Windows app.
- Open Quick Share on both devices and review the visibility or receiving setting. The available choices include Everyone, Contacts, Your devices, and No one.
- For a more private setup, sign in where Quick Share offers that option and choose Contacts or Your devices. Use Everyone only when you need temporary discoverability, then change it back.
- Leave the receiving screen unlocked while testing. A locked or inactive receiving device may not appear as an available destination.
Google’s current Android instructions are at Share files between Android and Windows with Quick Share. The general Android controls are also described in Use Quick Share.
How to send files from Android to Windows
- On the Android device, open Files, Gallery, or the app containing the item you want to send.
- Select one or more files. Photos, videos, documents, and other items can be selected from the app’s normal share flow.
- Tap Share, then choose Quick Share. On some phones the label appears as a Quick Share icon in the share sheet.
- Wait for the Windows PC to appear under available devices. If it does not appear, keep the PC’s Quick Share window open, unlock the PC, and recheck visibility on both devices.
- Tap or select the PC’s name.
- Look at the Windows computer and accept the incoming request. The transfer begins only after the receiver confirms it.
- When it finishes, open the destination shown by the Windows Quick Share app. If you cannot find the item, use the app’s displayed transfer location rather than assuming it went to the usual Downloads folder.
Do not close Quick Share or move the devices far apart while the request is waiting. A notification can be easy to miss when Windows is locked or an Android app is in full-screen mode.

How to send files from Windows to Android
- Open the Quick Share app on Windows.
- Choose the option to select files or folders, or drag the items into the Quick Share window. The Windows app supports selecting content for a transfer rather than requiring a separate cloud upload.
- Wait for the Android phone to appear as an available device. Keep the phone nearby with Bluetooth enabled and its receiving screen unlocked.
- Select the phone’s name.
- Accept the request on the Android device. The phone may show a notification or an in-app confirmation.
- Wait for the completion message before closing the Windows app or disconnecting either device.
The Windows app can send folders as well as individual files, subject to the app’s current interface and the receiving device’s available storage. Large transfers may take longer over a congested wireless environment; Google’s official pages do not publish a guaranteed transfer speed.
Visibility settings control both discovery and privacy
A device can be working correctly and still remain invisible if its visibility setting blocks the sender. Review this on both devices before changing drivers or reinstalling an app.
- Everyone: makes the device broadly discoverable to nearby Quick Share users. This is useful for a one-time transfer but exposes the device name to nearby users.
- Contacts: limits discovery to people recognized through the account or contact configuration supported by Quick Share.
- Your devices: is intended for devices associated with the same account or owner.
- No one: prevents incoming discovery until you change the setting.
Use the narrowest setting that still lets the intended sender find the receiver. The recipient must still confirm each incoming transfer; visibility does not automatically authorize files.

Why can’t my PC find my Android phone?
Work through these checks in order. Changing several settings at once makes it harder to identify the cause.
- Check the radios and connection. Turn on Bluetooth on both devices. Confirm that the Windows PC has Wi-Fi or Ethernet enabled. Toggle Bluetooth off and on if the device list is stale.
- Check Quick Share visibility. Set the receiving device temporarily to Everyone or another setting that includes the sender. Confirm that it is not set to No one.
- Unlock the receiver. Keep the phone screen and Windows receiving interface active. Google specifically notes that the receiving screen may need to be unlocked for the device to appear.
- Bring the devices together. Keep them within about 16 feet (5 meters), remove unnecessary distance and obstructions, and retry the scan.
- Accept the pending request. A device may disappear from the available list while another transfer request is waiting for confirmation.
- Check the Windows edition and app. Confirm that the PC is 64-bit Windows 10 or later, that ARM hardware meets the Windows 11 requirement, and that a Samsung PC is using Samsung’s app rather than Google’s.
- Consider BLE extended advertising. Google warns that Windows PCs without BLE extended advertising support may not be discoverable on some networks. This is a compatibility caveat; the documentation does not promise that a particular USB adapter or network change will resolve every case.
If a desktop has no Bluetooth hardware, a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter may satisfy the basic Bluetooth prerequisite. The official guidance does not verify a specific model or guarantee BLE extended advertising support, so treat an adapter as a conditional hardware option rather than a universal fix.
Using Phone Link instead
Phone Link is useful when you want Microsoft’s connected-phone interface or Quick Share is unavailable. It is not simply another name for Quick Share: it has its own setup, account, version, and device restrictions.

Phone Link requirements
Microsoft’s setup guidance lists Windows 10 with the October 2022 update or later, or Windows 11, plus Android 10 or later and a supported Android brand. Both devices need to use the same Wi-Fi network during setup, and you pair them with the same Microsoft account. Read the current setup requirements at Phone Link requirements and setup.
For the specific file-sharing feature, Microsoft’s file-transfer page lists Windows 10 with the May 2019 update or later, Android 10 or later, Link to Windows version 1.24032.518.0 or later, and Phone Link version 1.24032.156.0 or later. These are file-sharing minimums and should not be confused with the broader pairing requirements. The feature also depends on the phone being an eligible model.
Pair the phone and PC
- Install or open Phone Link on Windows.
- Install or open Link to Windows on Android.
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account on both devices.
- Follow the pairing prompt, which may display a QR code or confirmation code.
- Put both devices on the same Wi-Fi network and approve the requested permissions on the phone.
- Update Phone Link and Link to Windows if the file-sharing commands are missing. The versions listed above are the minimums Microsoft gives for that feature.
Send a file from Windows to Android with Phone Link
- In Windows File Explorer, select a file saved locally on the PC.
- Choose Share, then select Phone Link.
- Choose the connected Android phone if Windows asks you to select a destination.
- Accept the request on the phone if prompted.
- Look under Downloads > Sent from your PC on Android.
Microsoft says cloud-stored items are shared as links rather than transferred as the actual file. Select a locally saved copy when you need the file itself on the phone.

Send a file from Android to Windows with Phone Link
- On Android, select the locally stored file in a file manager or compatible app.
- Open the share drawer and choose Link to Windows – Send to PC.
- Select the connected Windows PC.
- Wait for the transfer to complete and open the destination indicated by Windows.
Phone Link drag-and-drop limitations
Microsoft documents restrictions for its drag-and-drop workflow. Folders are an example of unsupported content, and selecting 100 files is also listed among the limitations. Minimizing Phone Link during a drag-and-drop operation cancels the transfer. Use the explicit Share commands for a single local file when drag-and-drop is unavailable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not confuse Windows Nearby sharing with Android transfers
Windows Nearby sharing is Microsoft’s feature for sending items between nearby Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. It does not replace Quick Share for an Android phone. If one endpoint is Android, use Quick Share or an eligible Phone Link pairing instead. Microsoft’s PC-to-PC documentation is available at Share things between nearby devices in Windows.
Quick Recap
Quick Share or Phone Link: a practical decision
- Choose Quick Share when you need a fast setup for nearby files, want transfers in either direction, or use Android 6 through 9. It has the broader Android version range, provided the Windows computer and app are compatible.
- Choose Phone Link when the phone is Android 10 or later, the model is supported, both devices can stay on the same Wi-Fi network, and you already want Phone Link’s notifications, messages, or device integration.
- Use the method whose visibility and privacy controls match the situation. Quick Share lets you limit discovery to contacts or your own devices; Phone Link relies on the paired account and device relationship.
- Do not expect Windows Nearby sharing alone to connect an Android phone.
Final checklist for a successful wireless transfer
- Android version and Windows edition meet the selected method’s requirements.
- The correct Quick Share app is installed for the PC brand, or both Phone Link apps meet Microsoft’s minimum versions.
- Bluetooth is enabled on both devices.
- Wi-Fi or Ethernet is enabled on the Windows PC; Phone Link setup also uses the same Wi-Fi network on both devices.
- Visibility permits the intended sender to discover the receiver.
- The receiving screen is unlocked and the request is accepted.
- The devices remain within about 16 feet (5 meters) for Quick Share.
- The source file is stored locally when using Phone Link, rather than only in cloud storage.
