To move individual photos, videos, or documents from a Samsung Galaxy to a laptop, connect the phone with a USB data cable, allow access, and copy the files into a folder. For a restorable device backup instead, use Samsung Smart Switch on a supported Windows PC or Mac. These methods serve different purposes: a Smart Switch backup is not simply a folder of files you can browse.
Choose the transfer method that matches your goal

Copy files from a Samsung phone to a Windows laptop
Samsung Australia’s instructions below are for Australian-variant Galaxy devices; labels may differ by model, Android version, or region. The same basic process is to grant access, select the phone’s file-transfer mode, and copy files through File Explorer. Samsung’s USB file-transfer guide.

- If a prompt asks whether to allow access to phone data, tap Allow.
- If Windows does not show the phone or its folders, open the phone’s USB notification and select Transferring files/Android Auto. Wording can differ on other device versions.
- Open File Explorer on Windows and select the Galaxy phone.
- Browse the phone’s internal storage to find the files. Select the items you need, copy them, and paste them into a folder on the laptop.
- Wait for the copy to finish before disconnecting the phone. Open a few copied files from the laptop to confirm they are accessible.
Photos and videos are often in the phone’s camera folder, while downloaded documents may be elsewhere. Browse the folders rather than assuming every file type is stored in one location.

Copy files from a Samsung phone to a Mac

- Unlock the phone and connect it to the Mac with a USB data cable.
- Grant connection or phone-data access if a prompt appears.
- Open Finder and select the Galaxy phone.
- Navigate to the folder containing the files you want, then drag the selected files into a folder on the Mac.
- Wait for the transfer to finish and check that the copied files open from the Mac folder.
Back up a Samsung phone to a Windows PC or Mac with Smart Switch
Use this route when your goal is a device backup that can be restored, not a collection of files to browse. Samsung notes that the supported content depends on the device and file formats; some backed-up content, such as messages, may not be viewable on the PC even though it can be restored to another phone. - Check that the computer meets the current Smart Switch requirements for your region, then install Smart Switch from Samsung’s official download source.
- Charge the phone sufficiently, unlock it, and connect it to the computer using a cable capable of data transfer. Samsung UK states: “You will need to use a cable that can support data transfers.”
- If the phone asks whether to allow access to phone data, tap Allow.
- Open Smart Switch on the computer and choose Backup.
- Review the categories included. Samsung’s US guide says Select all is the default there; you can deselect categories or select specific items.
- Start the backup and leave the phone connected until Smart Switch reports completion.
- If you need to locate the backup, check Smart Switch’s settings for its save location. Samsung’s documented default paths vary by operating system and Windows version, so do not assume one path applies to every computer. Samsung UK lists default locations; Samsung US also provides Windows 11 guidance.
Samsung says free space required depends on how much data is being backed up, and backups remain on the computer until you delete them. Check available laptop storage before starting. An external storage destination may be an option in Smart Switch where supported; confirm compatibility, capacity, and connector fit for your phone and setup. What Smart Switch may not transfer or make readable
A successful backup does not guarantee that every item becomes a readable file on the computer. Samsung says supported content varies by device and file format. Its UK guidance also identifies limits in the described backup workflow:

The phone charges, but no files appear
- Try another USB cable. Some cables are made for charging and do not carry data.
- Connect directly to a USB port on the PC instead of using a hub.

Windows shows the phone but not its folders
- Unlock the phone and tap Allow if it asks for permission to access phone data.
- Open the USB notification and choose Transferring files/Android Auto, if available.

Smart Switch does not recognize the phone
In Smart Switch, choose More > Reinstall device driver. After the driver installation finishes, disconnect and reconnect the phone. Samsung UK driver instructions.

The backup cannot finish because the computer is low on space
Check the laptop’s free storage. The space needed depends on the amount of phone data being backed up; remove older backups only if you no longer need them. Samsung US Smart Switch guidance.
