The correct transfer method depends on what you call a draft. A document you are writing on a computer can be sent to a Kindle wirelessly with Send to Kindle or copied with a USB cable. A handwritten draft in a Kindle Scribe notebook follows a different path: use the Scribe Share function to email an exported copy, or manually import and export through a connected Google Drive or OneDrive account on supported models.
These methods are not interchangeable. Sending a DOCX or PDF to a Kindle adds a document to the Kindle library; it does not export a Scribe notebook. Exporting a Scribe notebook creates a copy for your computer, while cloud-drive transfers are manual rather than continuous synchronization.

First identify the kind of draft you have
Before connecting anything, decide whether the draft is a conventional computer file or handwriting created on a Kindle Scribe. The distinction determines the available formats, destination and whether the original remains editable.
A document file on your computer
This includes DOC, DOCX, PDF, TXT, RTF, HTML, EPUB and similar files saved on Windows or macOS. Send to Kindle is usually the simplest route when you want the document in the Kindle library. USB is preferable when you need a local copy placed directly in the device’s storage.

Handwritten pages in a Scribe notebook
A notebook made with the Scribe stylus is not a normal DOCX file. To move it to a computer, use Share on the Scribe and export a copy by email, or use a connected cloud drive if your model supports that feature. A file copied to the Scribe over USB cannot later be exported back to a connected cloud drive.
Choose the transfer route
| What you need to move | Direction | Recommended route | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| DOC, DOCX, PDF or another computer document | Computer to Kindle | Send to Kindle | Supported files are limited to 200 MB per file. |
| A local file copied directly to device storage | Computer to Kindle | USB | Steps vary by Windows or Mac and by Kindle generation. |
| A handwritten Scribe notebook | Kindle to computer | Share by email | The download link in the message expires after seven days. |
| Supported documents or notebooks exchanged with a drive | Both directions on eligible Scribe models | Connected Google Drive or OneDrive | Import and export are manual; there is no automatic synchronization. |
Send a computer draft to Kindle wirelessly
Send to Kindle is the best fit when you want a document available in the Kindle library without plugging in a cable. Amazon lists PDF, DOC, DOCX, TXT, RTF, HTM or HTML, PNG, GIF, JPG or JPEG, BMP and EPUB among the supported types. The stated limit is 200 MB for each file, not a combined allowance for a batch.
Prepare the file
- Save the latest version in one of the supported formats.
- Check the file size. A file over 200 MB will not meet the stated per-file limit.
- Use a clear filename so you can identify the draft in the Kindle library.
- Confirm that the Kindle is registered to the Amazon account receiving the document.
Send it with Send to Kindle
- Open Amazon’s Send to Kindle service on the computer.
- Sign in with the Amazon account used by the Kindle.
- Choose the document from your computer, or drag it into the upload area.
- Select the destination Kindle or Kindle library when the service offers a device choice.
- Submit the transfer and leave the Kindle connected to Wi-Fi.
- Open the Kindle library and allow the device time to download and index the document.
The wireless route creates a library copy rather than exposing the Kindle’s internal storage to the computer. It is useful when you want the same personal document available on more than one Kindle app or reader, subject to the account and delivery choices you make.

- You do not have a suitable data-capable USB cable.
- You want the document stored in the Kindle library rather than in a manually managed folder.
- You want to take advantage of Scribe personal-document features that Amazon associates with Send to Kindle imports.
- You are moving a file while the Kindle and computer are in different locations.
Copy a draft over USB
A USB connection is the direct, local option. Use a cable that supports data transfer, not one intended only for charging, and make sure its connector fits both the computer and Kindle. The exact process depends on the computer operating system and, on Mac, the Kindle generation.

Windows: use File Explorer
- Connect the Kindle to the computer with the USB data cable.
- Unlock the Kindle if its screen asks for attention.
- Open File Explorer and look for a device named Kindle or Kindle Scribe.
- Open the device’s storage view and locate the folder in which you want to keep the document.
- Drag the draft from the computer into the Kindle storage, or copy and paste it.
- Wait for the transfer to finish before disconnecting the cable.
- Use Windows’ safe-eject control, then unplug the Kindle and check the library or file list on the reader.
Amazon’s Windows troubleshooting instructions specify that the complete file path must not exceed 256 characters for a successful transfer. If a deeply nested folder or very long filename causes an error, move the draft to a short path such as the desktop and shorten the filename before copying it.
Mac: check the Kindle generation first
Amazon’s current Mac guidance treats Kindle Scribe and Kindle devices released in 2024 differently from many earlier models. Those newer devices require a separate application such as Send to Kindle for Mac for USB file management. Earlier Kindle models generally do not require that application, although Amazon notes a legacy macOS exception.
- Install and open the Amazon-supported Send to Kindle for Mac application if your Scribe or 2024-released Kindle requires it.
- Connect the reader with a USB data cable and unlock it if prompted.
- Open the application’s USB File Manager.
- Drag the draft into the Kindle storage area shown by the manager.
- Wait until the copy completes, then eject the device from the application or macOS before unplugging it.
The Mac USB File Manager does not support transferring more than 2,000 files at one time. Split a larger collection into smaller batches. Amazon also cautions that it cannot guarantee third-party Mac transfer software, so an unrecognized device or failed copy is better handled with the supported application or wireless delivery instead of an unverified utility.

USB trade-offs
- Advantages: direct local copying, no wireless delivery step and convenient handling of files that are already organized on the computer.
- Limitations: a data cable is required; operating-system and model differences matter; and USB-loaded PDFs do not receive every Scribe writing feature that may be available for documents imported through Send to Kindle.
Export a handwritten Kindle Scribe notebook to a computer
For a handwritten draft, start on the Scribe itself rather than in a computer file manager. The Share command packages the notebook as an export and sends the recipient a download link.

Use Quick send or Share via email
- Open the notebook containing the handwritten draft on the Kindle Scribe.
- Tap Share.
- Choose Quick send to the registered email address, or choose Share via email if you want to enter or select a recipient.
- Choose the available export options shown for your model.
- Send the message.
- On the computer, open the email and follow its download link.
- Save the exported copy in your preferred folder and rename it if needed.
Amazon says the download link expires after seven days. Download the file promptly and make a second copy if the notebook is important. Email sharing is a copy workflow: it does not turn the computer into a live mirror of the notebook, and editing the downloaded file does not alter the original notebook on the Scribe.
Export formats and model-dependent features
The exact format choices shown in Share depend on the Scribe model and its software. Current feature information says that some conversion-to-text and searchable-PDF options are limited to Kindle Scribe models released in 2025 or later. Do not promise a text-converted or searchable export until you have checked the Share menu on the exact device.
If the menu offers only an image or ordinary PDF export, that is the format available for that notebook on that model. Handwriting appearance may be preserved while editable text is not. For an editable computer draft, continue writing in the original computer document instead of treating an exported handwriting PDF as a word-processing file.
Use a connected Google Drive or OneDrive account on eligible Scribe models
Some newer Kindle Scribe models can import and export supported files through a connected Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive account. This can avoid email when a team or personal workflow already uses one of those drives, but it is not automatic synchronization. Amazon’s wording is explicit: files do not automatically sync between the Scribe and cloud drives; you must import or export them manually.

Connect and import a document
- On the Scribe, open the settings or account area for cloud-drive connections.
- Choose Google Drive or OneDrive and complete the account authorization shown on the device.
- Open the import command and browse the connected drive.
- Select a supported file and start the import.
- Wait for the import to complete before opening or annotating the document.
Amazon’s Cloud Drive FAQ lists PDF, DOC and DOCX, TXT, RTF, PPT, Google Slides, image formats, HTML, EPUB and Google Docs among compatible imports. Files must be under 200 MB. Availability depends on the Scribe generation and the accounts connected to it.
Export a Scribe document or notebook
- Open the supported document or notebook on the Scribe.
- Choose the device’s export or Share command.
- Select the connected Google Drive or OneDrive destination.
- Choose the available file format and confirm the export.
- Open the drive on the computer and download or edit the exported copy.
Cloud-drive export is separate from USB storage. Amazon states that a file transferred to the Scribe by USB cannot be exported back to a connected cloud drive. If a cloud copy is important, import the file through the supported cloud-drive path or Send to Kindle before annotating it, rather than assuming a later USB copy can be routed back to the drive.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Preserve Scribe writing features when importing a document
The route used to put a personal document on the Scribe affects which writing features are available. Amazon’s personal-document guidance associates some Scribe writing support with files imported through Send to Kindle, while PDFs loaded by USB do not receive all of those features.
Use Send to Kindle when you need Scribe-aware features
If your goal is to write directly on a computer document with the Scribe pen, prefer Send to Kindle for the import when the file and workflow support it. This gives the document the import treatment Amazon documents for personal documents. A USB copy may still display correctly, but the annotation and writing options can be more limited for a PDF.

Keep an untouched original
- Save the original DOCX, PDF or other source file on the computer before sending it.
- Use a new filename for each major revision.
- Export Scribe annotations as a separate copy when you need to preserve the original document without handwriting.
- Do not rely on the Kindle as the only location for a draft.
Troubleshoot failed transfers
The Kindle does not appear on Windows
- Reconnect the cable and try a different USB port.
- Confirm that the cable carries data, not only power.
- Unlock the Kindle and wait for Windows to refresh File Explorer.
- Try a shorter filename and a file path under the 256-character limit.
- If the device still does not appear, use Send to Kindle for a wireless transfer instead of installing an unverified utility.
The Kindle is not available to a Mac
Check whether the reader is a Kindle Scribe or a Kindle released in 2024. Amazon’s current instructions require the Send to Kindle for Mac USB File Manager for those newer devices. Earlier models generally use the normal Mac connection, subject to the legacy macOS exception described in Amazon’s help. If you are moving more than 2,000 files, divide the job into batches.
The document transfers but cannot be found
- Check the Kindle library as well as the local storage view; wireless and USB transfers appear in different places.
- Keep Wi-Fi enabled after a Send to Kindle delivery so the device can download and index the file.
- Verify that the file extension is one of the supported types.
- Check that the file is below the 200 MB per-file limit.
The Scribe email link no longer works
The download link expires after seven days. Share the notebook again from the Scribe to generate a new message, then download the copy promptly. If the recipient did not receive the email, check the registered address, spam folder and the Share menu’s recipient choice before sending again.
Cloud-drive import or export is missing
Confirm that the Scribe model supports connected drives, that the correct Google Drive or OneDrive account is authorized and that the file is under 200 MB in a compatible format. Remember that the drive workflow is manual and that a file originally transferred by USB cannot be exported back to that drive.
Practical workflows for common drafting situations
Writing a DOCX on a computer and reviewing it on Kindle
- Save the DOCX with a revision name on the computer.
- Send it through Send to Kindle if you want library delivery and Scribe-aware personal-document handling.
- Review or annotate it on the Kindle.
- Export any handwritten Scribe notes by email when you need them on the computer.
- Keep the original DOCX and the exported annotation copy as separate files.
Moving a PDF directly to a Windows Kindle
- Check the PDF size and shorten its path if necessary.
- Connect the Kindle with a data-capable cable.
- Copy the file through File Explorer to the Kindle storage.
- Eject the reader safely and open the file on the device.
This is efficient for a one-time local copy, but a USB-loaded PDF may not support every Scribe writing feature available after a Send to Kindle import.
Taking handwritten meeting notes to a Mac
- Open the Scribe notebook and choose Share.
- Use Quick send or Share via email.
- Open the message on the Mac and download the export before the seven-day link expires.
- Store the exported file with the meeting’s other records.
Working from a shared cloud folder
- Connect the eligible Scribe to Google Drive or OneDrive.
- Import a supported document manually from the drive.
- Annotate or write on the Scribe.
- Export the resulting document or notebook manually to the drive.
- Open the new copy on the computer and retain the prior version if you need an audit trail.
Which method should you use?
Choose Send to Kindle for most computer-to-Kindle document deliveries, especially when you want a library copy or Scribe personal-document support. Choose USB when you need direct local file management and know whether your computer and Kindle generation require a special application. Choose Scribe email sharing for a handwritten notebook that must become a computer-accessible copy quickly. Choose a connected cloud drive only when your Scribe model supports it and you are comfortable importing and exporting manually.
There is no single two-way folder that automatically keeps every Kindle draft and computer draft identical. Treat each transfer as a deliberate copy operation, preserve the source file, and select the route based on the document type, direction, operating system and Kindle generation.
