You can transfer wirelessly or with a compatible cable; the items offered depend on the phones, so review the selection and check important data on the A17 before erasing the old phone.
Before you start
- Keep both phones nearby and make sure Smart Switch is available on each. The A17’s setup guide includes an option to copy data from a Galaxy or Android phone; if you have already set up the A17, open Smart Switch on it to start instead. Samsung notes that setup screens can vary by setup method.
- For a wireless transfer, keep both phones close and, if possible, connected to chargers.
- For a cable transfer, fully charge both phones first. They cannot both stay connected to chargers during the wired transfer, which may take a while.

Choose wireless or cable

Samsung’s recommendation is vendor guidance, not a published comparative speed test. Its support pages do not establish that cable is always faster or that wireless always transfers fewer items.
Transfer wirelessly with Smart Switch
- On the A17, start Smart Switch from the setup transfer prompt or open the app after setup. Choose Receive on this phone, then Galaxy/Android, then Wireless.
- On the old Android phone, open Smart Switch and choose Send from this phone, then Wireless.
- Follow the connection or pairing prompt on the phones. Keep them within four inches of each other during the transfer, as Samsung specifies in its wireless Android transfer instructions.
- Review the content Smart Switch finds, select what you want to move, and start the transfer. Leave the phones close together until it finishes.
Transfer with a cable
- Connect the phones using a compatible data cable. Depending on the old phone’s port and the cable combination, you may also need a USB-OTG adapter.
- On the old phone, open Smart Switch and choose Send from this phone, then Cable.
- On the A17, open Smart Switch and choose Receive on this phone, then Galaxy/Android, then Cable.
- Complete any connection prompt, review the available content, select what to transfer, and begin. Keep the phones connected until the transfer is complete.
Samsung says a wired transfer can show an estimated time during the process, but its support guide does not publish a general duration. The actual time depends on the transfer rather than a stated benchmark.

What can transfer—and what to verify
Depending on the connected phones, Smart Switch may offer contacts, messages, call logs, photos, videos, music, documents, settings, and applications. Samsung says available content varies by device; some content or app data is transferable only between Galaxy phones. The list shown by Smart Switch on your devices is the practical guide to what it can move.
Before wiping, trading in, or otherwise giving up the old phone, check the A17 for essential contacts, photos, messages, and any app-specific information you rely on. Do not assume that an app’s data moved simply because the app itself appears on the new phone; verify it in the app or follow that app’s own migration or sign-in process.

If you have already finished setting up the A17
Open Smart Switch on the A17 and start a receive transfer, then follow the same wireless or cable steps above. The model’s setup flow is not the only point at which you can begin; Samsung’s Smart Switch guidance also covers transfers from within the Galaxy phone.
