The safest way to move data to an iPhone 17 is Apple’s Quick Start feature. Put the old iPhone on Wi-Fi, turn on Bluetooth, unlock it, place it beside the new iPhone 17, and follow the setup prompts. You can transfer directly between the phones or download your apps and data from iCloud. If the old iPhone is unavailable, restore an existing iCloud or computer backup instead. Apple’s instructions are for setting up a new iPhone generally rather than a separate iPhone 17-only process, so follow the labels shown on your devices.

Apple’s Quick Start instructions cover the nearby-device process, while its iCloud and computer-backup guides cover the recovery options.

Choose the transfer method that fits your situation

Start by deciding whether you still have the old iPhone, whether you have a usable backup, and whether you need to keep using the new phone while content downloads. The choices below are the migration routes Apple documents.

Situation Method What happens
Old iPhone is available and you want a phone-to-phone move Quick Start with direct transfer Data moves between the two phones; both remain occupied until the migration finishes.
Old iPhone is available but you want to use the new phone sooner Quick Start with iCloud download Apps and data download in the background after setup, provided the new phone stays connected to Wi-Fi and power where possible.
Old iPhone is missing or unusable, and an iCloud backup exists Restore from iCloud Backup The new phone is rebuilt from a backup selected by its date and size.
A Mac or PC contains a backup Restore from Finder, Apple Devices or iTunes The selected computer backup is restored; an encrypted backup requires its password.
You prefer a cable Wired transfer Apple lists wired transfer as an option, but cable type and model-pair compatibility must be confirmed for the two phones.

Apple does not publish a universal transfer duration. Network conditions and the amount of data being moved affect the time, so do not plan around a fixed number of minutes.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Prepare both iPhones before starting

A few minutes of preparation prevents the most common interruptions. Do these checks before turning on the iPhone 17’s setup assistant.

  • Have the old iPhone’s device passcode available. Quick Start uses it during setup.
  • Sign in to the Apple Account on the old phone and make sure you know that account’s password. You may be asked to sign in again for purchased content or services.
  • Connect the old iPhone to Wi-Fi and turn on Bluetooth. Leave Wi-Fi available throughout the transfer.
  • Charge both phones or keep them connected to power. A direct transfer occupies both devices until it completes.
  • Keep the two phones close together. Moving the old phone away can interrupt the nearby-device setup.
  • If you intend to restore from a computer, locate the computer that contains the backup and, for an encrypted backup, its backup password.
  • Plan for cellular activation separately. Have the physical SIM or eSIM details and your carrier’s account information available.

Quick Start generally requires iOS 11 or later on the old device. Apple’s iCloud migration flow specifies iOS 17.2 or later on the nearby old device. Because Apple can change setup screens and requirements, use the version notice displayed on your phones if it differs from these general requirements.

Use Quick Start for a direct transfer

Direct Quick Start is the most complete starting point when the old iPhone is in your possession. It does not require you to wait for an iCloud backup to finish first, but both phones stay tied up until the phone-to-phone migration ends.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Start the old iPhone

  1. Connect the old iPhone to Wi-Fi.
  2. Open Control Center or Settings and confirm Bluetooth is on.
  3. Unlock the phone and leave it on its Home Screen. Keep its passcode nearby.

2. Turn on the iPhone 17

  1. Power on the new iPhone 17 and begin the normal setup process.
  2. Place it beside the unlocked old iPhone. A Quick Start prompt should appear on the old phone.
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions, including the animation scan and passcode request when shown.

If the Quick Start prompt disappears, Apple advises restarting both devices and trying again. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on the old phone and that the devices are close enough to communicate.

3. Connect the new phone

Join Wi-Fi or activate cellular service when setup asks. Complete Face ID or Touch ID enrollment as prompted. These steps protect the new device and are part of setup before the transfer choice appears.

4. Select direct transfer

When Quick Start offers the migration choices, select the option to transfer directly from the old iPhone rather than downloading from iCloud. Read the estimate shown on the phones, then confirm.

5. Leave the devices alone until completion

Keep both iPhones near each other and plugged into power. Do not erase, reset, or trade in the old phone while the progress indicator is running. Because direct transfer keeps both phones occupied, wait for the new phone to finish setup before relying on either device.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Choose iCloud download in Quick Start when you need the new phone sooner

Quick Start can use iCloud instead of maintaining a phone-to-phone transfer for all content. This is useful when you need to make calls or use the iPhone 17 while apps and data continue downloading.

  1. Complete the same nearby-device steps: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on the old iPhone, both phones unlocked, and the devices side by side.
  2. At the migration choice, select the option to download from iCloud.
  3. Finish the remaining setup prompts on the iPhone 17.
  4. Leave the new phone connected to Wi-Fi and power where possible. Apps and iCloud-stored data can continue arriving after the initial setup.

The new phone can be used sooner with this route, but the Home Screen may show apps still downloading. Avoid judging the migration complete solely because setup has reached the Home Screen; allow background downloads to finish before checking every app.

Apple’s iCloud transfer instructions explain the background-download behavior and the nearby-device requirements. Apple’s general migration checklist also says some buyers may qualify for temporary iCloud storage, but eligibility is conditional rather than universal.

Restore from iCloud when the old iPhone is unavailable

You can still recover the data contained in an existing iCloud backup if the old phone was lost, damaged, traded in, or otherwise cannot be used. A backup is required for this route; information that was never included in a backup cannot be restored from it.

During first-time setup

  1. Turn on the iPhone 17 and proceed until it asks you to join Wi-Fi.
  2. Connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network.
  3. At the Apps & Data stage, choose Restore from iCloud Backup.
  4. Sign in with the Apple Account used for the backup.
  5. Review the available backups by date and size, then choose the one that matches the old iPhone. The newest file is not automatically the correct one if it predates important changes.
  6. Stay connected to Wi-Fi while the restore runs. If the phone asks for Apple Account credentials associated with purchased content, enter them when available.

Content can continue downloading after the initial restore, so keep the iPhone 17 on Wi-Fi and power after setup. Check that the selected backup date reflects the last time you used the old phone.

If the iPhone 17 has already been set up

Apple’s documented iCloud restore path starts from the setup assistant. If you already reached the Home Screen, the supported route requires erasing the new device first. On iOS 15 or later, the path is Settings → General → Transfer or Reset [Device] → Erase All Content and Settings.

Erasing deletes data currently stored on the iPhone 17. Before choosing it, copy any photos, messages, files or other information that exists only on the new phone. After the erase and restart, go through setup again and select Restore from iCloud Backup.

Restore a Mac or PC backup

A computer backup is useful when the old phone is unavailable or when you deliberately keep local backups. The computer must contain the backup you want to use, and the iPhone 17 must be new or erased before Apple’s restore process begins.

Restore steps

  1. Connect the iPhone 17 to the Mac or PC that stores the backup.
  2. Open Finder on a current Mac, Apple Devices on a supported Windows setup, or iTunes where Apple still directs you to use it.
  3. Select the iPhone in the application.
  4. Choose Restore Backup.
  5. Pick the backup by its date and size. Confirm that it is the intended phone and the most recent useful snapshot.
  6. If the backup is encrypted, enter its backup password when requested.
  7. Keep the iPhone connected until the restore completes, then allow additional content to synchronize or download.

Encryption matters for health records. Apple states: “If your backup isn’t encrypted, your Health and Activity data from your iOS device or Apple Watch won’t transfer.” Use an encrypted backup when preserving that information is important, and make sure its password is known before starting.

If the iPhone 17 is already configured, the computer-restore workflow also requires erasing it first. Treat that erase as destructive and protect anything that exists only on the new phone.

Apple’s current instructions are at Use the Finder, Apple Devices or iTunes to transfer data from your previous iOS device to your new iPhone or iPad.

Use a cable only after checking compatibility

Apple identifies wired transfer as an available option, but the cited instructions do not specify one universal cable, connector combination or list of compatible old-and-new iPhone pairs. Older iPhones and an iPhone 17 may not share the same connector, and a charging-only cable may not carry data.

  • Identify the connector on each phone before purchasing or connecting anything.
  • Use a cable and any required adapter that support data transfer, not just charging.
  • For two phones with matching USB-C connections, a USB-C data cable may be appropriate, but confirm that both devices and the cable support the intended transfer.
  • If the cable route is unclear, use Quick Start wirelessly or restore a verified backup instead.

Do not assume that one cable works for every previous iPhone model. The safest instructions for the particular model pair are the prompts shown by Quick Start and Apple’s current support documentation.

Handle cellular service separately from data migration

Moving photos, messages, apps and settings does not by itself guarantee that cellular service is active. Apple’s migration checklist advises preparing for SIM or eSIM transfer and contacting the carrier if the new device needs a different SIM arrangement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Physical SIM

If the carrier and both phones use compatible physical SIMs, follow the carrier’s instructions for moving the card. A different SIM size or a carrier restriction may require a replacement card. Do not discard the old phone until you have confirmed calls, texts and mobile data on the iPhone 17.

eSIM

eSIM transfer depends on the carrier and the device’s setup prompts. Complete the carrier activation steps shown during setup, and contact the carrier if activation does not finish. The data transfer can succeed even when cellular activation still needs attention.

Pair and restore an Apple Watch as a separate task

An Apple Watch is not proof that iPhone migration is complete. Apple points Watch owners to separate instructions for restoring a watch backup and pairing the watch with the new iPhone. Keep the watch near the iPhone 17, open the Watch app when the phone setup is finished, and follow the pairing or restore prompts.

Use the watch-specific guidance linked from Apple’s iCloud migration page. If Health and Activity history matters, the backup’s encryption status is important when restoring through a computer.

What to check after the transfer

Do not erase or hand over the old iPhone until the new one works for your daily needs. Use this verification sequence after direct transfer, iCloud download or computer restore.

  1. Unlock the iPhone 17 with the expected passcode and confirm Face ID or Touch ID works.
  2. Place a test call, send a text message and test mobile data after SIM or eSIM activation.
  3. Connect to Wi-Fi and verify that the expected Apple Account is signed in.
  4. Open the Photos, Messages, Contacts, Calendar and Files apps and spot-check recent content.
  5. Open important apps individually. Some apps or services may request a fresh sign-in, security verification or device approval.
  6. Check that apps still downloading have completed, especially those needed for work, banking or two-factor authentication.
  7. Open the Watch app and confirm the Apple Watch is paired if you use one.
  8. Review Settings for notifications, privacy permissions, Bluetooth accessories and other device-specific options that may need confirmation.
  9. Only after these checks should you make the old iPhone available for erasure or trade-in.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

Quick Start never appears

Unlock the old iPhone, confirm Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, move the phones close together, and restart both devices. Start setup again on the iPhone 17. A restart is Apple’s documented response when the setup prompt disappears.

The transfer stops or seems frozen

Keep both phones connected to power and avoid separating them. A large data set or poor network conditions can extend the process; Apple does not provide a fixed completion time. If an onscreen error appears, note it before restarting so you do not accidentally erase the wrong device.

There is no suitable iCloud backup

Return to the backup list and compare dates and sizes. If no backup contains the needed data, the iCloud restore route cannot recreate information that was never backed up. If the old iPhone still works, go back to it and use Quick Start or create an up-to-date backup before retrying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The computer backup asks for a password

An encrypted backup cannot be restored without its encryption password. Locate the password used when the backup was created. Creating a new password or reinstalling the computer application does not reveal the old one.

Apply even pressure for a few seconds to allow the suction cup to adhere properly. To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.

Health or Activity history is missing

Check whether the computer backup was encrypted. Apple specifically warns that unencrypted backups do not transfer Health and Activity data from an iPhone or Apple Watch. If the old phone is available, use an encrypted backup or another supported migration route.

Apps are present but not usable

Allow background downloads to finish over Wi-Fi and open the affected app. A service may require its own account sign-in, a verification code or device registration even when the app itself has transferred.

Cellular service does not work

Check the SIM or eSIM status in Settings and complete any carrier activation prompt. If the new phone needs a different SIM arrangement, contact the carrier; data migration alone does not activate every cellular plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long should the process take?

There is no reliable universal estimate. Apple says transfer times vary with network conditions and the amount of data transferred. A small, lightly used phone may finish sooner than one containing years of photos, videos and app data, but Apple’s guidance does not support promising a particular duration.

“Transfer times can vary based on factors such as network conditions and the amount of data being transferred.” — Apple Support, Use Quick Start to transfer data to a new iPhone or iPad

Direct transfer keeps both phones unavailable until the migration finishes. iCloud download lets the iPhone 17 become usable earlier, but background work may continue after setup. In either case, power and a stable connection reduce the chance of an interruption.

Which method should you use?

  • Choose direct Quick Start when the old iPhone works, you can keep both devices nearby and you want a single phone-to-phone migration.
  • Choose Quick Start with iCloud download when you need to use the iPhone 17 sooner and can leave it on Wi-Fi while content arrives.
  • Choose iCloud Backup restore when the old phone is unavailable but a correctly dated backup exists.
  • Choose computer restore when your trusted backup is on a Mac or PC, especially when you need an encrypted backup for Health and Activity data.
  • Choose wired transfer only after confirming the connector pair and data capability of the cable.

For most people with both phones in hand, start with Quick Start, keep the devices powered and nearby, and decide between direct transfer and iCloud download based on whether immediate use of the iPhone 17 matters more than having both phones occupied until migration ends.
