Use the transfer choice shown during your OnePlus 16 setup, or open Clone Phone if it is available. Android’s setup flow can copy apps and data from an old Android phone, while OnePlus documents both Wi‑Fi and cable-based Android-to-Android transfers. Select the items you need, let the copy finish, and verify your important data before changing or erasing the old phone.

OnePlus’s published transfer instructions are generic; they do not verify the exact OnePlus 16 screens or menu labels. Follow the prompts actually displayed on your phone. OnePlus calls the process “Data transfer has never been simpler” on its Steps to Transfer Your Phone page, but that is promotional wording rather than a measured claim about speed or completeness.

Which transfer method should you use?

There are three practical ways to move information from an old Android phone to a OnePlus 16. The new phone’s setup wizard may offer Android’s built-in copy process; Clone Phone may provide a direct OnePlus-to-OnePlus or Android-to-OnePlus migration; and OnePlus also documents separate Wi‑Fi and cable procedures. The exact choices depend on what the new phone displays and which connections your two devices support.

Route Best fit Connection or requirement What is established
Android setup copy You are setting up the OnePlus 16 for the first time Use the connection option offered on screen Google says Android setup can copy apps and data from an old Android device
Clone Phone Clone Phone is present on the new OnePlus Direct phone-to-phone pairing; its Play listing says a network connection is not required Its listing includes contacts, SMS, call history, calendar, photos, videos, audio and apps, with data for certain apps
OnePlus Wi‑Fi flow You do not have a suitable data cable Both phones use the wireless transfer prompts OnePlus documents connecting the old phone over Wi‑Fi, choosing content and waiting for completion
OnePlus cable flow You have a compatible, data-capable cable Use the connectors and cable types both phones support OnePlus documents a wired Android-to-Android route; the cable is optional and is not promised to be included

Do not assume that the route with the shortest-looking description is automatically faster or more complete. No published migration-speed, success-rate or completeness statistic establishes that comparison.

Prepare both phones before you begin

A little preparation prevents the most common failures: a locked old phone, an interrupted copy or an important account that cannot be opened afterward.

  • Keep both phones together and charged. A transfer can take time, especially when the old phone contains a large photo or video library. Keep each device connected to power if its battery is not comfortably high.
  • Make sure the old phone still works. Unlock it, confirm that its important content is visible and check that you can reach the apps and accounts you care about. If the old device is already failing, prioritize irreplaceable photos, documents and authentication access before starting a full migration.
  • Have the old phone’s screen lock available. The new phone may ask you to approve pairing or copying on the old device. A forgotten PIN, pattern or password can stop the process even when the phones are physically connected.
  • Decide whether you will use Wi‑Fi or a cable. For the wired route, use a cable that carries data, not only power, and confirm that its plugs match both phones. A USB‑C-to-USB‑C data cable is an optional purchase; do not assume one came in either box.
  • Keep account credentials accessible. Some apps will require you to sign in again on the OnePlus 16. Have your Google account and any app-specific sign-in or two-factor method available.
  • Plan to leave the old phone unchanged. Do not factory-reset, trade in or hand over the old device until you have checked the new phone and opened the apps whose data matters.

Use Android’s built-in setup copy

Google’s instructions for copying apps and data from an Android device to a new Android device apply at the Android setup level. The OnePlus 16 may use different wording or place the choices in a different-looking screen, so treat the labels below as a sequence rather than a promise of exact text.

  1. Start the OnePlus 16 setup. Turn on the phone, select the requested language and region, and continue until it offers to copy apps or data from another device. If your screen presents a different label, choose the option that clearly refers to transferring from an old Android phone.
  2. Choose the old Android phone as the source. Keep the old device unlocked and close to the OnePlus 16. Approve any connection or permission request shown on the old phone.
  3. Select the offered connection method. The setup wizard may present a wireless path, a cable path or both. Choose only a method you can actually complete with the hardware and connections you have.
  4. Review the selection screen. Select the categories you want to copy rather than assuming every item will move. The available categories and wording are controlled by the setup software on your devices.
  5. Start the copy and leave both phones alone. Keep them near each other, connected as instructed and powered until the progress indicator says the transfer or setup stage is finished. Disconnecting early can leave an incomplete result.
  6. Finish the OnePlus 16 setup. The phone may continue installing or arranging copied apps after the initial transfer. Let those operations complete before judging what is missing.
  7. Open important apps and accounts. Test the items listed in the verification section below. A successful setup screen does not prove that every app’s private data or every account session was reproduced.

Important exception for work- or school-managed phones

Google warns that a phone managed by a business or school may not transfer everything. Device-management policies can restrict copying, app installation or access to protected data. If the old phone belongs to an employer or school, ask the administrator which content is permitted and use the organization’s approved backup or enrollment process where required.

Move data with Clone Phone

If Clone Phone is available on the new OnePlus, it is the manufacturer’s dedicated migration utility. The Clone Phone – OnePlus app listing, published by OnePlus Ltd. and shown as updated November 10, 2025, says an Android-to-OnePlus migration can occur without a network connection. That means the transfer itself does not depend on mobile data or an internet connection, although the phones may still need internet later for app downloads, updates or sign-ins.

  • Thunderbolt 4 & USB-C Device Support: This Thunderbolt 4 & USB C cable is compatible with USB-C computers such as MacBook Pro, Dell XPS 13/15, Dell Alienware 13/15/17, Dell Precision 15/17, Aspire R13/V15, S5-391-6419 Nitro, V17 Nitro, Predator 15/17, ROG G752VL, GT752VT, GT752VY, GX700VO, ZenBook Pro UX501VW, Clevo P750DM/P770DM/P870DM, ThinkPad P50/P70, MSI GS40, GS60, GT72, GT80, Vortex, WS60, WS72, and VAIO S11.
  1. Open the official Clone Phone app on the new phone. If it is not already installed, use the official Google Play listing rather than an unrelated migration utility. The available app name or icon can vary by software build.
  2. Identify the new and old phones as prompted. The new OnePlus should be designated as the receiving phone and the old Android as the sending phone. Follow the pairing instructions actually displayed; do not rely on a particular QR-code, button or menu label unless your screen shows it.
  3. Approve the connection on the old phone. Keep both displays awake while the phones establish their direct link. Grant only the permissions needed for the categories you intend to copy.
  4. Review the categories and app choices. Select contacts, messages, call history, calendar entries, photos, videos, audio and apps as appropriate. If the utility offers app-data choices, read the qualification carefully: the listing refers to data for certain apps, not all apps.
  5. Start the transfer. Keep the devices close, charged and undisturbed until Clone Phone reports completion. A phone can appear idle while it is processing a large media collection, so do not close the utility simply because the screen changes slowly.
  6. Verify the result on the OnePlus 16. Check the contacts and media first, then launch the apps that contain conversations, notes, saved games, work records or other information you cannot easily recreate.

Clone Phone’s supported data can vary with the phones’ system software and Android versions. The categories in its store listing are a documented scope, not a guarantee that every item in each category will be copied from every Android model.

Use OnePlus’s Wi‑Fi transfer path

OnePlus’s transfer guide presents a wireless Android-to-Android flow. It is useful when you do not have a suitable cable, but the page describes a general OnePlus process rather than verified OnePlus 16 screens.

  1. Choose the wireless transfer option shown by the new phone. During setup or in the transfer utility, select the option referring to Wi‑Fi or wireless copying.
  2. Connect the old Android phone as instructed. The guide’s sequence has the old phone join the transfer connection over Wi‑Fi. Accept the prompts on both devices and keep them within easy range.
  3. Choose what to copy. Review the available apps and data categories. Exclude items you have already moved or do not need if the selection screen allows it.
  4. Begin the copy and wait. Leave both phones powered and nearby until the new phone reports that the transfer is finished. The guide does not publish a universal duration, so an elapsed time by itself is not proof that the process has failed.
  5. Complete setup and inspect the result. Use the checks below before you reset or dispose of the old device.

OnePlus documents Wi‑Fi and cable routes as alternatives. You do not need to buy a cable for the wireless route.

Use a cable when the phones support it

The same OnePlus guide includes a wired transfer workflow. A cable can be convenient if the new phone offers it and you already own a compatible data cable, but OnePlus does not establish that a particular cable is supplied with every phone or that every Android combination supports the same connector.

  • Move Files Fast: Transfer music, movies, or entire seasons of TV shows in seconds at 40 Gbps.
  • HD Display: Connect your laptop to an external monitor to mirror or extend your screen in up to 8K@60Hz or 4K@144Hz.
  • Huge Range of Power: Supports a maximum 240W charge when paired up with a compatible charger. Charge virtually any USB-C device from phones and accessories to laptops.

  • What You Get: Anker 515 USB-C to USB-C Cable (USB4, 3.3ft), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  1. Confirm the physical connection. Check both phones’ ports and use a cable that supports data in the required direction. A USB‑C-to-USB‑C cable is only an example; older phones may use a different connector.
  2. Select the cable option on the OnePlus 16. Choose the transfer prompt that refers to a wired connection, then connect the phones when instructed. Do not force a plug or use a loose adapter.
  3. Unlock and approve on the old phone. Android may show a permission, trust or connection-mode request. Accept it only after confirming that the new phone is the intended destination.
  4. Review the proposed data selection. Choose the categories you want and start the copy. Keep the cable attached and both phones powered during the operation.
  5. Finish setup and test the copied data. If the new phone does not recognize the connection, disconnect safely and use the wireless route or Clone Phone instead of repeatedly forcing an incompatible cable.

What may transfer—and what still needs checking

Clone Phone’s listing identifies the following categories. Android setup and the OnePlus transfer flow may present overlapping choices, but the actual result depends on the source phone, destination software and app support.

Category What to check on the OnePlus 16 Qualification
Contacts Open the Contacts app and search for several names, including a recently added contact Clone Phone lists contacts as supported data
SMS and call history Check both recent and older conversations and confirm that call records are present Clone Phone lists SMS and call history
Calendar Open past and future events, including recurring entries Clone Phone lists calendar data
Photos and videos Browse recent, older and album-organized media; open several files Clone Phone lists photos and videos
Audio Check recordings, downloaded tracks or other audio files you rely on Clone Phone lists audio
Apps Compare the old phone’s important apps with the new phone’s app list Clone Phone lists apps, but availability and installation can vary
App data Open each critical app and look for its conversations, documents, saves or settings The listing says data is supported for certain apps, not universally

An app appearing on the new phone does not necessarily mean that its private database, downloaded files, account session or two-factor setup came with it. Treat every high-value app as a separate verification task and use that app’s own export, backup or sign-in procedure if its content is absent.

Verify everything before you retire the old phone

Use the old phone as your reference while both devices are still available. The following checks target data that is easy to overlook during a successful-looking setup:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Contacts: Search for family, work and emergency contacts, and confirm that names and phone numbers are intact.
  • Messages: Open several conversations, including one with recent media or an older message you may need.
  • Call history: Check that recent incoming, outgoing and missed calls appear if that record matters to you.
  • Calendar: Compare upcoming appointments, recurring events and reminders.
  • Photos and videos: Check recent captures, older albums and a few files from different dates. Open files rather than relying only on a thumbnail count.
  • Downloads and local files: Use the file manager to inspect folders that contained PDFs, scans, recordings or other documents on the old phone.
  • Important apps: Launch banking, messaging, work, travel, health, password and authentication apps. Sign in again when prompted and confirm that their expected content is available.
  • Device functions: Test calls, text messages, Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth accessories you need daily. These are separate from copying personal files and may require new permissions or pairing.

Keep the old phone unchanged until these checks are complete. Only then should you remove accounts, wipe storage, trade in the device or give it to someone else.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

The OnePlus 16 does not show the expected setup labels

The available evidence does not establish exact OnePlus 16 menu names. Do not search for a label that is absent simply because it appeared in a generic guide. Read the choices on your screen, look for the option describing a transfer from an old Android phone, or open Clone Phone if it is available. OnePlus’s OxygenOS 16 information page does not turn the generic transfer article into a verified OnePlus 16 walkthrough.

The old phone will not pair

Unlock both devices, keep them close, accept the pending approval on the old phone and restart the pairing sequence from the transfer screen. If a wireless attempt continues to fail, use Clone Phone where available or switch to a compatible data cable. Avoid accepting a pairing request whose destination you cannot identify.

The cable is connected but nothing happens

Confirm that the cable carries data, that both plugs fit the ports correctly and that the old phone is unlocked. Try the wireless route if the phones use incompatible connectors or the cable is power-only. OnePlus does not claim that every cable, adapter or Android model supports its wired flow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The transfer stops or appears frozen

Keep both phones on power, leave them near each other for a wireless copy and avoid switching to other apps. If the process actually reports an error, note which category failed and retry that route after reconnecting. When a large media collection is involved, wait for the progress indicator or completion message rather than judging by elapsed minutes alone.

An app is present but its data is missing

This is consistent with the Clone Phone listing’s limitation to data for certain apps. Open the app, sign in and check its own backup or export options. Some services keep information on their servers and restore it after authentication; others require an app-specific transfer. Do not assume that reinstalling the icon recreates its private data.

Some content is missing from a managed phone

Google specifically cautions that business- or school-managed devices may not transfer everything. Contact the administrator instead of attempting to bypass a policy. The organization may need to enroll the OnePlus 16 or provide an approved migration method.

Protect accounts and personal information during the move

  • Use the official Clone Phone listing published by OnePlus Ltd. if you choose that utility; avoid downloading similarly named tools from unknown publishers.
  • Review the categories before starting and deselect sensitive material you do not want on the new phone.
  • Keep both phones in your possession while they are paired. Do not approve a transfer request that appears unexpectedly.
  • Complete sign-in and two-factor checks on the OnePlus 16 before removing the old phone’s authentication method.
  • After verification, remove the old phone from account device lists and perform a factory reset before disposal or resale. A reset should be the final step, not part of troubleshooting a failed transfer.

If your old phone is an iPhone instead

The title concerns an old Android phone, so the Android-to-Android procedures above are the relevant path. OnePlus and Google publish separate iPhone-to-Android guidance. Google’s Switch From iPhone to Android information notes that available content depends on the transfer method and compatible devices; WhatsApp history can require a distinct step. Do not apply iPhone-specific instructions to an Android source phone or assume that an Android-to-Android selection screen will offer the same categories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A reliable order of operations

  1. Leave the old Android phone intact, charged and unlocked.
  2. Start the OnePlus 16 and use the Android setup copy option if it is offered.
  3. If you prefer a direct utility, use Clone Phone and select only the categories you need.
  4. Choose OnePlus’s Wi‑Fi flow when you lack a suitable cable, or its cable flow when both phones and the cable support it.
  5. Wait for completion, then check contacts, messages, call history, calendar, media, downloads and critical app access.
  6. Keep the old phone until those checks pass; only afterward remove accounts and reset it.
